Robert Lee Pitts III - June 15, 1987 - August 19, 2023

Departed: 08/19/2023 (Washington)
Obituary Preview: Robert (AKA) Rob, was born on June 15, 1987, to Carmen Hubbard and the late Robert Lee Pitts, Jr. He attended Alexandria, VA public schools and Prince George’s County, MD public schools. He was christened and introduced to Christ at the Church of the Rapture (formerly known as Free Evangelist Church) and did accept Christ as his personal savior.
Rob was predominately raised by his stepdad, Samuel Baker who entered his life at the tender age of 2 and remained in his life until his passing. Rob had a passion for music, poetry, and cooking, and as a child Rob loved to read and loved playing video games with friends and family.
Rob had a big heart of gold and loved people. He also loved helping people and wanted to help anyone that he could that he saw was in need. On one occasion, Rob brought one of his schoolmates home from school that was experiencing some difficulties at home. He gingerly asked if his classmate could stay with us (with the consent of his mother) and that request lasted for an entire week. His classmate enjoyed his stay so much with the family that he did not want to return to his home.
Rob had a passion for cooking and worked as a waiter for several restaurant establishments in the DMV. He had an amazing memory and could remember the smallest of details when placing orders for restaurant patrons and knew the available entrees and food items on the menus. Rob took his occupation of waitering very seriously and provided exceptional customer service. Rob’s attention to detail and polite manner gained him the attention of some well-to-do regulars that would specifically ask for him during their visit to the restaurant and would tip him very well.
He also took on the responsibility of being the caregiver for his immediate family and wanted to ensure that they were eating well and recuperating as best as they could.
After a brief illness, Rob passed away on August 19, 2023, in the comfort of his home.
Rob leaves to cherish his memory his mother Carmen Hubbard; stepdad Samuel Baker; grandfather Leciel Hubbard; brother Jason Hubbard; sisters Chanelle Baker and Nakia Hayes (Rodney); loving godmother Dorothy Beaty; cousin/brother Evan Lisane; special friend Michael Drayton, Jr. and a host of cousins, family members and friends.

Departed: 07/26/2022 (Washington)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Our Handsome Son Bernard McCain
Bernard was the best blessing to ever come into this world. His smile “out of this world.” No matter how mad you are, Bernard’s smile makes you forget what you we’re mad about. He’s the only child of mine, but he was multiple children into one.
Bernard loved all kinds of music. We enjoyed singing to him; he would laugh so hard and try to sing along. Bernard also loved watching Paw Patrol & Mickey Mouse Club House and all other cartoons, but these were his favorite.
Bernard brought joy to anyone who’s ever met or just seen him. You couldn’t help but walk up to him and start talking to him just to see that smile. Bernard was the strongest boy ever. He came out strong. It was like nothing could stop Bernard. He was our everything. He made every day very special.
Bernard also loved school and couldn’t get enough every morning. Bernard woke with a big smile or he’s playing and making noises. He made sure he was known in the room and made sure everyone knew he was there.
Bernard was greatly loved and will be forever missed.
Bernard is unforgettable and we will always love you son.
Bernard is survived by his mother Labree Johnson; his father Irvin Curtis; grandfather Leroy Johnson and his Uncle Brandon Johnson. He will truly be missed by many other loving relatives and friends of the family.

The first of nine children, Ruth was born to Moses Ellis and Lillian Bradshaw Ellis on September 11, 1925, in South Hampton, Virginia.
In March 1947, she married Reuben Thompkins and set roots in Washington, D.C. where they raised seven children of their own until Reuben's death in March 2008.
Ruth, aka "sweet Ruth," was kind to everyone she met and generous to a fault.
She gave everyone the impression that they were her favorite person in life.
On any given day, it wasn't unusual to see her sitting across the kitchen table with people she'd just met, pinkies raised, enjoying a steaming cup of tea and danishes.
A giver at heart, it also wasn't unusual for clothes and toys to go missing for the sake of those in the community who were less fortunate.

To her, love was always the answer. And if she could put a smile on your face, even better.
That was her undying legacy.
In 2015, she moved in with her daughter Susan and husband Ralph and loved meeting the days and greeting her neighbors and the caregivers who were vital to her life.
Holding fast to her Christian beliefs, she was an active member of First Baptist Church of Glenarden, cherishing her relationships with fellow seniors at the church's Senior Wednesday ministry.
Toggling her days with friends both there and at Bowie's Senior Center gave her a sense of daily fulfillment and purpose.
In 2021 she moved into Bethel Assisted Living II, where she spent her final days with caregivers who loved and cared for her as if she were family.
Six children survive Ruth. Leo Mac Thompkins, Saundra Jean Thompkins Searcy – (Paul), Sheila Yvonne Thompkins, Donnell Thompkins – (Suzanne), Sheryl Lynette Thompkins, Susan Tylese Thompkins Jackson – (Ralph). Son Thomas Elmer Taswell Thompkins predeceased her in 2021.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial service arrangements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, with the assistance of a funeral home or newspaper staff if needed. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography highlighting their achievements, hobbies, and interests. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial service arrangements, and any charitable donations or tributes in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life story. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or audio clips to enhance the tribute. This can help to personalize the notice and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others may require email or phone submissions.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can help ensure that your life story is told accurately and in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for online-only notices.

Can I edit or revise an obituary after it's been published?
