Bert E. Bush - May 20, 1951 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Sparta)
Obituary Preview: Bert E. Bush, 70, of Melrose, died Sunday, April 17, 2022 at Franciscan Skemp Mayo, La Crosse surrounded by his loving wife and family. Bertie was born on May 20, 1951 to Albert C. “Bert” and Clara Bush. He attended the Spring Creek School until it closed and graduated from Black River Falls Senior High in 1969.
On February 26, 1972, he married Lucille Zidich, whose family had moved to Black River Falls from Hibbing, MN when the Jackson County Iron Mine opened up. During their 50 years of marriage they were always together. They reared their four children and farmed various farms and farmland in Jackson County. In later years, Bertie enjoyed buying and selling toy implements. He especially loved his collection of Oliver tractors. He looked forward to fishing trips in northern Minnesota, did some hunting, and traveled a bit, too.
Bertie loved farming. According to his sisters, he didn’t always love the barn work. As a youngster he sometimes would leave his muscles “in a drawer.” As a teenager, he might have to go to the bathroom at the start of milking and return when it was almost done. Given the choice between milking and fieldwork, you would find him on a tractor in the field. Despite any early doubts, he and Lucie bought the farm he grew up on, and throughout his life he had dairy cattle, at one time 1000 pigs, beef, calves, and grew crops on many acres of land. Despite his many health challenges: back surgery, losing a foot to a combine auger, cardiac bypasses, a successful fight against cancer, headaches, and just plain getting older, he never quit farming. It might seem like it was going to happen, but nope, it didn’t. He was out working two days before he died. He did it because he couldn’t not do it. He loved it.
His family meant everything to him. He and Lucie were always together, and there was usually at least one of their kids and/or grandkids with them. He found great joy in little kids and loved to have them around, even when he wasn’t feeling well. Their laughs, conversations, and snuggles made him very happy. He enjoyed family gatherings and holidays. Sometimes he would deny it, but he even loved having six sisters. He will truly be missed.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lucie. His four children: Gerry (Samantha Swenson), Jason (Teresa Myher), Greg (Jenny) Bush, Tracy of Eau Claire; 17 grandchildren: Gabe, Claire, and Tyler Bush, JayCee, Dylan, Nora, Dawson, Alexys, Austin, and Tyzin Bush, Samantha Dodge, Logan Farner, Morgan Gonyo, Alex Dickey, Kayla Hansen, Kylee (Tyler) Ewert, Devin L’Herault; two great-grandchildren: Aubrey Gilbert, Liam Welker; sisters: Virginia Young, Joyce (Cary) Arndt, Lorene Breit, Jill (John) Higgins, Christie (Rich) Wirz, Jayne (Kevin) Foster; half-brother, Robert (Judy) Mauer; in-laws: Charles (Roberta) Zidich, Richard (Danette) Zidich, Donna (Jim) Ranney and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert C. “Bert” and Clara (Olson) Bush; parents-in-law, Charles and Helen Zidich; in-laws Harry Breit and Larry Young; Don Lemerand.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. Memorials may be directed to the Spring Creek School Restoration Project, Jackson County Historical Society, Box 37, Black River Falls, WI 54615.

In 2009, Paul purchased the store from his father and in 2016 Wyatt continued the family business by purchasing it from his father. Craig remained active in the store until December of 2021. Something else Craig thoroughly enjoyed was driving a semi-truck for his son Paul's business. In 2001 at the age of 61 he obtained his CDL. The truck he drove was unique as it was an actual truck used in the tv show "Bj and the Bear" from the early 1980's. The truck drew a lot of attention and although Craig wasn't fond of personal attention, he made many friends and had great conversations with people about the vehicle.
Craig enjoyed attending the Iola Car Show, car collecting, and family trips-including Hawaii, the Caribbean by boat, Montana by train and Alaska.  He was also supportive of special needs programs in the area.
Craig is survived by his children, Catherine (John) Feltes of Prescott, WI, Lori (John) Stefanko of Rosemount, MN, Paul (Kristina) Sagehorn of Sparta, WI, Kristin (Jason) Pulham of Sparta, and Toni (Jesse) Aalberg of Rosemount, MN; grandchildren, Kelsey (Steve) Most, Jeffrey (Christina) Feltes, Jameson (Kayla) Feltes, Kylen (Zach) Romashko, Matthew, Ellen, Michael, and Annie Stefanko, Tara, Hank, and Wyatt Sagehorn, Olivia, Andre, and Emmitt Pulham, Nicholas, Elliot, and Isabel Aalberg; great-grandchildren, Charlie, Camden, Morgan, Maverick, Marin, and Kinley; sister, Jane (Peter) Vernig of Golden, CO; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elenore on December 1, 2008; and sister, Joan Vanni.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Father Eric Berns officiating. Chester "Chet" W. Schanhofer - July 07, 1942 - March 27, 2022

Departed: 03/27/2022 (Sparta)
Obituary Preview: Chester (Chet) William Schanhofer, age 79,  Sparta, WI, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at his second home in St. Petersburg, FL surrounded by his family. Chet was born in Sparta, WI on July 7, 1942, he was the oldest son of the late Donald Schanhofer and Veronica Brueggeman.  He was also preceded in death by wife, Janet (Tucker) Schanhofer.
Chet was most proud of the legacy he and his late wife, Janet created over their 53 years of marriage; as high school sweethearts, they married when he was 18 and raised three children.  Initially, Chet provided for his family by hauling milk with his life-long friend, Gene Ostrem from 1963-1968; however, Chet was not destined to be the “milk-man.”  In 1968, Chet changed career paths and started working with Severson and Sprain (S&S) Distributing, whose trade including the selling and distributing of Budweiser products.  It was in this profession that Chet found his passion as the “beer man”, purchasing S&S from Herbert Severson in 1976.  Excellent socializing skills and a great business acumen, helped Chet and Janet grow S&S Distributing, to include a second distributor in Marshfield, WI, and its Anheuser Busch product portfolio, a household name. Once the beer business ran like a well-oiled machine, Chet needed another challenge.  Having been raised on a farm, he decided farming would be his next big adventure in life. If you knew Chet, his motto was “go big” or “go home” and this suited his approach to farming.  What began as a small, hobby farm would eventually expand into a much larger operation benefitting area farmers and business owners within the local farming community.  Chet would rent cropland from area farmers and would lend his equipment or his time to assist with planting and harvesting around the county.  He loved his farm equipment and was a big supporter of “Team Red” (International Harvester) machinery.  While most farmers will experience equipment issues from time to time, Chet had Degenhardt Implement and his son-in-law on speed dial, both of whom believed he would often break something just so they could fix it!
Some might describe Chet as a perfectionist in the way his home was always kept, the lawns perfectly manicured, the vehicles or machines running efficiently or the pristine condition the warehouse was maintained.  He was a loyal and respected man and he had high expectations, for both his family and his employees, and seeing the fruits of their labor gave him a great sense of pride.  His loyalty was reciprocal and those fortunate to have known him, will carry his legacy forward for years to come.
Chet was an avid gun collector and loved to hunt, whether locally or out west, he enjoyed the sport and its associated bragging rights.  For years, he would venture out west to Colorado hunting and the stories of the group’s adventures were often larger than life, as were some of the trophies hung on display within his home or farm shop, too.
As the years went on, Chet and Janet became “snowbirds” and would escape the cold winter months by vacationing at Islands End in St. Pete Beach, FL.  In 2012, they purchased their retirement home on the bay in St. Pete Beach, where they would host family and friends to escape the frigid temperatures of a Wisconsin winter.  Chet and Janet were the life of the party and they enjoyed generously entertaining for visitors and neighbors alike, eventually hosting an annual, neighborhood Valentine’s Day party that was all the rage for those fortunate to attend. Chet married Violeta Jone Gamble January 14, 2022, at her home in Palm Island, FL, where they celebrated with family and friends.  Little did they know that this would be the last party Chet would throw.  Having received some devasting health news, Chet requested his children, and their spouses, travel to Florida on March 8, 2022, to spend two weeks with him and Jone. If you know Chet, then you know he always got his way and so on Sunday, March 13, 2022, David, Jane, Jake, Danelle, Steve and Deanna all arrived where they would spend the next two weeks together until Chet passed on Sunday, March 27, 2022.  He got his way!
Surviving are his wife, Jone Gamble, his children, David and Jane Schanhofer, Steve and Deanna Rickert, Jake and Danelle Jacobson; grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Jared and Allison Rickert, Melisa, Michael, Colin and Rachel Jacobson, John Kast and Kellie (Trent) Hagen; and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janet, granddaughter, Melinda Jacobson and his grandson, Ryan Jacobson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Father Eric Berns officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
