Kenneth Carl Doden - April 20, 1937 - December 16, 2020

Departed: 12/16/2020 (Gibson City)
Obituary Preview: Kenneth Carl Doden, 83, peacefully returned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, December 16, 2020. His love of the Lord, as well as the support of his family, friends, and the diligent care workers at Heritage Nursing home, ultimately gave him the peace he needed to surrender. Unfortunately, Ken died from Covid-19.
Kenneth Carl Doden was born on April 20, 1937 in Langworthy, Iowa the son of Henry and Emma (Weers) Doden. He graduated from Monticello Public High School, in Iowa in 1955.
That fall, Ken began his college studies, at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, graduating in 1959, with a B.A. degree in Theology. The same year, Ken married Arlene Ukena on August 2, 1959 in Polo, Illinois. Ken would continue his theological studies at Wartburg Seminary, including participation as an intern for the ELCA Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Minnesota. He continued his studies at Wartburg Seminar in Dubuque graduating with a Masters in divinity & counseling in June, 1963. Ken’s ordination was held in Monticello in 1963. Reverend Kenneth Carl Doden served congregations in North Dakota, Indiana, and Illinois from 1963 through 1980, until he felt it best to step down because of physical limitations he was experiencing.
Reverend Ken, as most still called him, began to serve others in a new form of ministry, selling Lutheran Brotherhood insurance, mostly in Ford county and surrounding areas. When he was 45 he went to Mayo clinic, learning he had olivopontocerebellar atrophy, a crippling degenerative disease that forced him to completely retire from all churchly duties in 1983. Although his illness caused him many difficulties – like falling all the time - he never complained as he continued to counsel others and spread unconditional love and joy in various other services capacities. He concluded his professional career by serving as the park ranger at North park, working as a custodian/counselor at Heritage Health Nursing home, and finally as a driver for those unable to afford transportation to and from counseling services under the Ford county social services youth program.
Some of Ken’s favorite activities were meeting with his friends for coffee at the local café, reading scripture, baptizing residents, and celebrating the resurrection of the Lord during Easter! Ken was a skillful listener, gifted with the ability to spread cheer to everyone he encountered. Things that brought joy to his spirit were, laughing and joking with his family, friends, and the community.
Ken is survived by his wife, Arlene (Ukena); daughters -Sara Lynn (Mike) Kinsey and Mary Beth (Richard) Hicks; grandchildren – Michael (Shelia) and Abby Kinsey; and Grant, Nolan, and Justin Hicks. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister-Delores Romp; brothers - Lawrence, Wilbert, and Marvin.

William Ralph McKinney - October 04, 1947 - October 17, 2020

Departed: 10/17/2020 (Gibson City)
Obituary Preview: William Ralph McKinney, PhD October 4, 1947 – October 17, 2020 William McKinney was raised in Foosland, Illinois. We are sure he raised plenty of hell there, at the chagrin of his school teacher mother. He completed an undergraduate degree, eventually, at Southern Illinois University. He failed out his freshman year, subsequently became a Marine, and then returned later. In 1999 he was awarded SIU alumni of the year. He was the comeback kid. Bill McKinney wrote his own jokes. He had a distinguished career as Professor and Department Head in the Department of Parks and Recreation at the University of Illinois. Retiring in 2009. He loved his work and colleagues. Bill cared deeply for those he mentored. His advice was always sought after, even if the story took a detour from time to time. He didn’t have shallow conversations, he wanted to talk about the real stuff. Authored four books and over sixty articles and monographs. Was an avid Illinois Football and Basketball fan…or maybe it was the tailgating? He loved playing the drums and Motown music, but also aspired to be Jimmy Buffet. Any place with live music was where he wanted to be. He was the only Dad we knew who got the cops called on him for noise pollution. He hated traffic and following the speed limit. He danced with his daughters at their weddings. He called his friends, regularly. Bill continuously expanded his group of friends and treated everyone like they mattered. He held his relationships dear. Was a runner, waterskier, jeep enthusiast. Bill loved Hallmark movies, and called Lifetime “The Movie Channel” We debate regularly who he looked like: Ernest Goes to Camp, Joe Namath, or Harrison Ford—it’s easy to guess his take. He loved the ladies. He was accident prone. He had favorite ER doctors, and knew their names. Had a high pain threshold. He couldn’t cook a can of soup and often mispronounced common words. Bill had a weakness for chocolate, skittles, and peanuts. If you had any of these items, he would blame you for the inevitable binge. Told the BEST stories. There is a good one about a jeep in the middle of a frozen lake. Spoiler: the jeep didn’t make it. Genuinely loved his family. Adored his grandchildren. He pushed you, challenged you, and eventually you appreciated that support. We called his Arizona home, “Bill’s Last Resort.” He had the amazing ability to live in the moment. He would stare, take a deep breath and just drink life in. He was obsessed with sunbathing, often wrapping foil around large, cardboard, homemade visors, so he could get a tan at all angles. It is only fitting that he passed away lying by the pool. His passing is surreal as he seemed to be invincible- tempting fate several times over the years. He lived his life the way he wanted to live it. William McKinney was preceded in death by his Parents, Doyne and Earl McKinney, and his brother, Chris McKinney. Survived in death by three daughters and their husbands. Ashley McKinney and Kris Young of Salt Lake City, Utah. Abby McKinney and Brian Crimp of Sun City, Arizona. Emily McKinney and Jay Lopez of Long Beach, California. Bill had 6 Grandchildren. Jenevieve McKinney Young, Adalyn and Caleb Lopez, Vivian, Elijah, and Joanna Crimp. William was also survived by sister, Jayne McKinney and many friends Donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the National Park Service. COVID Friendly Services Planned for June 20th, 2021

Chester Goodrich - July 02, 1941 - October 10, 2020

Departed: 10/10/2020 (Gibson City)
Obituary Preview: Chet (“Grampa”) Goodrich passed away on October 10, 2020, with loving family by his side. A kind, loving soul with a warm and welcoming smile for everyone. Grampa’s love for his sport teams (Illini, Huskers, Cardinals, and Vikings) was only outdone by his love of his family. Family always came first.
Chet was born in Drummer Township, Illinois on July 1, 1941, on a family farm. He was born with a love of farming that continued in his pursuit of his PhD in Plant Genetics and a minor in statistics at the University of Minnesota. Chet met his wife, Mary, in the corn fields. The two married and traveled the world together with two young kids in tow, living in Nigeria, Africa, Panama City, Panama, and back in the states where they lived in Nebraska, North Carolina, Iowa, and Illinois. Chet was proud of his fascinating work; but was proudest of his title of “Grampa”. His happiest moments came from reading to grandkids and growing fruits and vegetables such as potatoes, pumpkins, and cantaloupe with and for them.
His sense of humor was a gift that was cherished by all who knew and loved him. Grampa was amazing at knowing just the right thing to say to inject levity into any situation.
