Obituary Preview: Yvonne Marie Hendricks “Sister” age 64, of Muncie, IN made her peaceful transition from earth on April 20, 2022, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
She was born to the late Robert and Odessa (DeGraffenreid) Hendricks on May 17, 1957, in Anderson, IN.
Yvonne enjoyed life and all it had to offer.  She graduated from Northside High School in Muncie, IN, in 1975 and attended Ball State University. Throughout her life “Sister” cared for many children and opened her home to many.  She was proud woman who offered her compassionate demeanor to all who acquired it.  Yvonne accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age while living in Anderson.  She relocated to Muncie with her parents and siblings in 1965. Yvonne enjoyed spending her summers as a child in Louisiana with her family.  She was an avid reader and collected hundreds of books.  She enjoyed listening to R&B, Blues and Gospel Music, spending time with her children and her grandkids.  Yvonne was one to say what was on her mind and was a sweetheart to many Yvonne was preceded in death by both her loving parents Robert and Odessa Hendricks, three brothers, David Hendricks, John Hendricks and Terry Hendricks, two sisters, Denise D. Dollison and Judith Lynn Hendricks
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving children, Toshia Hendricks, (Shawn Wilson Jr.) and Alicia (Anthony) Ewing, two grandsons, Anthony Ewing II, and Ayden Ewing, three sisters, Lisa Hendricks, Andrea Hendricks all of Muncie, IN, Walter-Marie Dean of Montgomery, AL, brother, Robert Hendricks Jr. of Troy, AL, Great Aunt, Willie Mae Davis of Louisiana, with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

His favorite hobbies included remodeling homes, doing yard work, gardening, and he enjoyed talking to everyone. He loved and cherished his family and always displayed kindness and concern for others.

After completing his training in trade, he relocated to Anderson, IN.  Ralph was born to Ralph and Lulean Dabney. He was the oldest son out of nine children.
Ralph was a family man who worked hard to provide for his children and family. He retired from General Motors after 31 years of service. He loved cooking, especially for the holidays. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, listening to music, and watching western movies.
Ralph leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 44 years Teresa Dabney, his sons Raymond, Rodney Dabney (wife Charissa), daughters Rachel and Nia Dabney.   He had fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, brothers; John, Robert Dabney-Anderson, In, George (wife Deborah) Dabney- Montgomery, AL. Sisters; Louise Jones-Anderson, IN, Easter Dabney- Orlando, FL, Rosetta Dabney- Anderson, IN. In Addition to this are a host of loving nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends.

Annie Pearl Alexander - October 18, 1922 - February 20, 2022

Anna Pearl (Gayles) Alexander, known to friends and family as Annie Pearl or Ms. Pearl, was born on October 18th, 1922, in Pratt City, Alabama to Rivers Gayles and Katie Belle (Rumph) Gayles. She attended the Birmingham Public Schools and graduated from Industrial High School. Education was essential to her – she even earned perfect attendance during the 1938-1939 school year at Industrial High School. Annie Pearl continued her education at the Poro School of Beauty Culture, which was the first of its kind to offer cosmetology and beauty courses to Black women in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated in 1947.
Shortly after graduation, Annie Pearl moved to Anderson, Indiana to help her aunt, Anna Durden, establish one of the premier black beauty businesses in the city – Durden’s Beauty Shop. She went on to establish two more beauty businesses – including Pearl’s in 1973 and Pearl’s Beauty Castle in 1987. In 2007, she received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund Trailblazer Award for her entrepreneurship. Annie Pearl continued to further her education in her craft, earning a hair coloring certification from Wella and Clairol and a hairweaving certification from Dudley’s University of Carolina. She worked in the beauty business for 51 years before retiring in 1998. Annie Pearl continued to further her education throughout her life, constantly taking courses at her home church, Allen Chapel AME in Anderson, Indiana. She was a proud member of Allen Chapel. She held many church offices. She served on the Board of Trustees and Usher Board and received the Living Legend Award from Allen Chapel in 2017. She was also a member of the Olive Chapter #26 Order of the Eastern Star Jurisdiction of Indiana and El Zora Court #77 Oasis of Marion Desert of Indiana. Annie Pearl was an active member in her community through cultural club organizations, mentoring groups, lodges, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and her Poro College Sorority, Pi Omicron Rho Omega. She especially loved mentoring young women in business before her retirement and inspired other beauticians to “advance yourself constantly”
Born an only child, Annie Pearl had seven children of her3108 own; Irma Lee (Irving) Young (deceased); Patricia Ann (Irving) Shande; Lana Faye (Irving) Patterson; Reverend Alfred Eugene Johnson (deceased); Dale Conrad Johnson, Bruce Anthony Johnson, and Gayle Duane Johnson.
Annie Pearl departed this life on Sunday, February 20th, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rivers Gayles and Katie Belle (Rumph) Gayles; husband, Willie J. Alexander; children, Irma Lee (Irving) Young and Reverend Alfred Eugene Johnson; and stepchildren, Dorothy (Johnson) Sinclair and Edna (Johnson) Cobb. She leaves with cherished memories her daughters, Patricia (husband Gideon) Shande, Marietta, GA; Lana Faye Patterson, Cincinnati, OH; stepdaughter, Pam Johnson, Anderson, IN; daughter-in-law, Joyce N. Johnson, Plymouth, MI; sons Dale Johnson, Fort Wayne, IN; Bruce (wife Lynette) Johnson, Columbia, TN; Gayle Johnson, Mableton, GA; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be March 3, 5pm to 7pm at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, Home Going Services will be held Friday at 11am at the church, with a one-hour viewing.  Rev. Philip Johnson, Eulogist, Pastor Dalrey Trotter, Officiating.  Interment will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.  Services entrusted to L. C. May Funeral Services.

She took pride in working, shopping and continuing her education at Ivy Tech Community College. Yvonne attended worship services at Antioch Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was a Sunday school teacher.  While she lived in Muncie, Yvonne worked for MITS and YOC where she retired from. Yvonne moved to Anderson and gained employment with Aspire and H & R Block, until her health failed her. Yvonne leaves to cherish her memory a son Anthony (Denetha) Quarles; Two brothers Larry Quarles (Ga) and Donald Quarles Sr. (Anderson, IN) Six grandchildren;  BreAnna (Robert) Kasper, Jaylon Quarles, Dariane Quarles, Leshea Manning, Jordan Quarles, Kayla Quarles a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Martha Lou Harris Calloway was born on December 27, 1945, in Tangipahoa, La. Martha received her wings on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the age of 76.
Martha grew up in Muncie Indiana, graduated from Muncie Central High School and started her higher education at Ball State University. Martha received her undergraduate degree from Central State University in 1968, which she then attended graduate level studies at the University of Cincinnati.
During graduate school Martha was offered an opportunity to serve in an executive position at the Minneapolis Housing Authority (MHA). Martha then went on to accept challenging positions with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; and Atlanta, Georgia. Her housing career of nearly fifty years culminated as the executive director of Lithonia Housing Authority in Georgia.
Martha was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in addition to being a Red Hat Society Member. Martha’s community service stretched all the way to South Africa where she was a benefactor to an impoverished school. She had many diverse and international friendships. Her close interactions with her former high school and college friends were a joy to her. Some of her most cherished times was traveling with her husband across three continents by planes, trains, ships and all manner of conveyances.
Martha was committed to her faith.  She was a loyal member of Union Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia where Rev. David Stanley was her pastor. Rev. Shirley Scott and Rev. Joe & La Marta Brooks also provided her with spiritual counseling.
Martha is survived by Jon Calloway, her husband of over 47 years. She also leaves behind two daughter’s (Tina Smith and Alinka Pollock) grandson (Kristopher Pollock) and beloved granddaughter (Aysia Pollock). Additional family includes, goddaughter (Staci Sudduth) brother’s (James Harris Jr., Bobby Robinson, Matthew Harris Hanifa, Jimmy Storm, Jackie Galloway, Herman Galloway and Alton Knighten Jr.) sister’s (Maggie Barnes and Kathy Williams) sister-in-law’s (Kimberly Hendricks Harris, Yvette Robinson and Shirley Watkins) brother-in-law’s (David Barnes and Kelvin Williams) special aunts (Roselee Brown and Gloria Allen) special cousins (Cornelius & Mary Dollison) Along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends near and far.
Martha is preceded in death by her mother Auntee Allen Levy Brown and fathers James Harris Sr. and Carl W. Brown, “Pop”. Grandparents Everette and Martha Levy Pierce and Almer Harris “Rose”. Mr. & Mrs. Jon Calloway Sr. were her beloved father and mother-in-law’s.
The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many comforting messages, prayers, flowers and any other expressions of kindness and concern evidenced at this time in thought and deed.

He was employed with General Motors, Delco for over 45 years until his retirement.  During this time Claud enjoyed working on cars as a mechanic, gardening, and spent his leisure time fishing as much as he could.
He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Katrina Bell of Anderson, IN, Lisa (Jimmie) Hall Collier of Huntsville, AL, Bruce A. Hall of Anderson, IN, Grandchildren; Freddie Thurman III, Bryson Teague, Brittany Pitts, Lakeila Meadow, Bryson Teague, Jada Collier, Great Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, and special friend, Vesta Kelley.

Helen confessed her faith in Christ at an early age at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Helen passed away December 27,2021 surrounded by family.
At the age of 16, Helen married her best friend, the late Rev. John L. Jones. Helen went on to complete her education at Ball State University. Helen loved taking care of her family. She also loved traveling, playing cards, fishing, and shopping. She was known for her sassy “Ms. Chancellor” style, and no no sense. Helen loved singing every chance she could get. Helen sang with the local group, “The Thompson Singers”.
Helen leaves to cherish her loving memory 1 daughter: Robin (Raymond) Smith of Grand Prairie, TX. 5 grandchildren; Jonathan (Heather) Jones of Muncie, IN, Ivionna (Michael) Lipscomb of Covington, GA, Raymond Smith III, Tyler Smith, La’Marr (Kenedee) Smith all of Grand Prairie, TX. Known as” Momma Jean” to a special nephew Quentin Byrd. 1 adopted granddaughter Kenya Folds of Georgia. 5 great- grandchildren; Bella Dearinger, Javionna Smith both of Muncie, IN. Laura spent her early years in Jonesboro, Arkansas where she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.  Her journey then took her briefly to Harvey, IL and on to Anderson, IN where she resided for over 50 years.  Laura was employed by Community Hospital from whence she retired.  After leaving Community Hospital, she was then employed at St. John’s Hospital where she also retired after 10 years of service.
Laura was a faithful member of Anderson Zion Baptist Church for over 40 years, where she devoutly served on the usher board.  She was also enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society.

Robert H. Armstrong - April 14, 1944 - November 26, 2021

Obituary Preview: Robert H. Armstrong, 77 entered into his eternal rest on November 26, 2021. He passed away at Community Hospital in Anderson. Robert was born April 14, 1944, in Columbia, TN to the late Jake and Charlotte Armstrong. He was enlisted in the United States Navy aboard the USS Yellowstone AD-27. While stationed in the Navy, he visited such places as Cuba, Spain, Gibraltar, France, Italy, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Robert worked for General Motors for 32 years in skilled trades. He attended Ivy Tech Community College and several trade schools and programs along the way. Robert was instrumental in helping General Motors on the groundbreaking launch of its first electric car prototype. He was sent to California for this important task. There wasn’t an engine or motor that Robert couldn’t tackle. He also built his own roadster and airplane. He was a proud licensed Pilot. He has awards and certificates to numerous to mention that shows his exceptional talents. He was a founding member of the A Town EZ Riders Motorcycle Club,a member of Peerless Lodge #32, and he was a member of several Gun Clubs, along with other clubs. He leaves to cherish his precious memory one child, DeShonda Armstrong Goodwin, three Grandchildren, Sheridan Chrisp, Meliek Bryant and Breyona Goodwin, and one Great grandson Kaison Chrisp. Also surviving him are three brothers Charles (Louann) Armstrong, David (Evelyn) Armstrong and Best friend Larry (Garnetta) Armstrong, three Sisters, JoeAnn Burk, Lois (Dwight) Greene and Pam (Keith) Stokes, very special niece Amiyah Armstrong, stepson Brian Patterson, special friends, Dwight Greene, Sheila Kelly, Dewayne Hamilton, and Lindsey Brown. Thomas worked at the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center for 7 years before becoming a dedicated worker at Borg Warner for over 20 years. Thomas was also a dedicated worker for Ivy Tech Community College before he retired.  He leaves to cherish his memory, two children; Jasmine Ashley and Thomas Ashley; three brothers Anthony Clayton, David Clayton, and Robert (Yvonne) Clayton; five sisters Shrivonne Beard, Joyce (Earl) Strong, Elaine (Ron) White, Nina (Dontae) Shaw, and Esther Kenner; five grandchildren Channing, Nova, Skyla, Chevelle, and Zion; and a host of nieces, nephews, and  cousins.  Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; Edna Ruth Clayton, Thomas Elmer Ashley, and Elder Henry O. Asbill.  Dorothy moved to Anderson in 1949, where she married the love of her life, Raymond B. Anderson.  Dorothy retired from Delco Remy after 25 years.
She loved to travel and had been to many states.  In her early years, she was a seamstress and designed dresses for her to wear.  Dorothy enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her two sons, Raymond (Hilda) Glover of Anderson, IN, Johnny (Daisy) Anderson of Hemet, CA, one daughter Selena Anderson, brothers-Edward Asbill, Vern Asbill, Charles Asbill.  Dorothy had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, and loved by a host of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and many friends.

Obituary Preview: Eric Streaty, age 50 went home to be with the Lord on August 20, 2021.  He was born in Anderson, IN on May 10, 1971 to Virginia and the late Julius E. Streaty Jr..  Eric graduated from Anderson High School in 1989.  He went to school and became a traveling LPN, to assist many medical facilities throughout the state of Indiana.  Eric was a loving father, and he also had a love for sports. He played softball through his 20s and 30s. As he began playing softball, he quickly dubbed a reputation for his home run power. His son Bryce, nephew Jaysson and other kids would wait behind the outfield fence whenever Eric was up to bat because they knew a home run was on the way. Eric also excelled off the field and in the weight room as well.  He loved to constantly work out and take care of his body. At his peak, Eric was putting up 500lbs on bench press. When his weekends didn’t consist of playing softball, working out or supporting his son and nephew at their sporting events, he was supporting his Michigan Wolverines.
Eric was a kind, loving and giving soul.  His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of everyone that knew him.  He was a devoted father, a caring son, a supportive friend and an all-around good man. Rest in peace E-Dubs.

She was born September 15, 1927 in Trenton, KY, the eldest daughter of Charlie and Evelyn Nesby Smith Cooper. Her early years were spent in Trenton. In 1941, she became a resident of Anderson, IN when her family relocated, and lived the remainder of her life in Anderson.  Being a teen at the time, Ruth was enrolled in Anderson Sr. High School, graduating in 1946. After graduation she began her lifelong ministry of helping others through care-giving. She was employed by Dr. E.G. Hudson as a part of his office medical staff. She then moved on to become a certified nursing assistant for St. John’s Hickey Memorial Hospital and several home health agencies retiring after thirty-plus years of service.
She was an active, faithful member of Allen Chapel AME Church serving first as an Usher, next as a Stewardess and then becoming Stewardess Emeritus. She was also a committed worker of Allen’s Clothes Closet.
On November 24, 1949, Thanksgiving Day, Ruth Copper and Leander Wilson were joined in holy matrimony. This union brought forth Ruth Evelyn, John Charles, Leander Wayne, and Lynnette.
Cherishing her memory are daughters: Ruth Evelyn Hampton (James) and Lynnette Dixon (Jay); son: Leander Wayne Wilson (Grace) all of Anderson; Eleven grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law Reeba Cooper and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Leander Wilson; son, John Charles Wilson; parents, Charlie and Evelyn N. Cooper; brother, John Cooper; sister, Dorothy M. Scherie was a devoted mother to her daughter Monique; they were like twins. Scherie loved to sing, was a wonderful cook and had a bright and energetic personality.  Her family and friends knew her as a kind soul, always willing to help others and cheer loved ones up with her cooking. She was humorous, talented and outspoken.  Scherie worked as a CNA for several years and loved her career. Scherie was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories.  She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all that knew her. “Mom was not only my mom.  She was my mentor, my teacher, my strength and inspiration…she was my best friend.” Monique R. Obituary Preview: Stanley Ross May, 63, visionary, entrepreneur, and community leader of Anderson, IN, transitioned to his heavenly home on June 11, 2021, following an extended illness. He was born in Anderson, IN to L. C. and Katherine May. Stanley graduated from Madison Heights H.S. Anderson, IN in 1977.
After graduation he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Indiana State University and pledged Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He then moved to Hartford, Connecticut to work for United Technologies and Boeing Corporation. During this time, he also worked for Fuqua Funeral Home.
In the early 90’s, Stanley worked for Delco Remy Division of General Motors as a production supervisor and purchasing engineer with assignments that included Mexico. Later he accepted a position at Delphi Division, GM in Kokomo, IN.
Based on his experience in Hartford Stanley felt a passion to join his father in the funeral care business.  In 1989 Stanley went to the New England School of Mortuary Science, Boston, MA., obtaining his degree and licensing in Mortuary Science. In November 1991 Stanley joined L. C. May Funeral Services as a licensed Funeral Director and embalmer.
Stanley accomplishments included his years of leadership as General Manager and Lead Funeral Director at L. C. May Funeral Services, Inc. Under his direction the business flourished as it provided funeral services to many families throughout central Indiana. Stanley facilitated a major renovation of the funeral home facilities which are appreciated by all today.
On June 18th, 2015, he married the love of his life Sandra Kay Summerville.
In addition to his family and the funeral home Stanley found most rewarding his service to the community. He served as a mentor to many young people providing encouragement, and career guidance at the Township Youth Center Coalition. He always promoted furthering their education to obtain their career goals.
His vast civic involvement included board positions on Madison County Community Health Center, The Gospel Highlights, Madison County Urban League, African American Leadership Forum, Unity Leadership Coalition, Junior Warden with Peerless Lodge Masonic Hall.
Stanley’s hobbies included fishing, travel, reading, nice restaurants with his loving wife. He loved Black history, listening to jazz, watching the Discovery Channel, and attending Home Coming at his alma mater.
Stanley is survived by his wife of 6 years, Sandra K. May of Anderson, IN;  daughters; Sheaneta M. Rowe (Kevin) of Pinson, AL, Na Lynn B. Jones, Anderson;  sons; David L. Jones, Jr., Nathan A. Jones (Amy Jo) both of Anderson, IN, , mother; Katherine G. May of Anderson, IN, brothers; Andrew May, San Diego, CA    Ronald L. May (Chelsea) of  Indianapolis, IN, David V. May (Bettie), Joseph A.
