Zaida Rodriguez - September 19, 1924 - April 30, 2024

Departed: 04/30/2024 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: Zaida Luz Rodriguez (September 19th 1924 - April 28th 2024)
Zaida Luz was born in Naguabo, Puerto Rico on Sept. 19th 1924. She was the eldest of nine children born to Elisa Anderson de Rodriguez and Inez Rodriguez. She was a bright child, a straight A honors student, and graduated earlier than her peers. After attending the University of Puerto Rico, she became a school teacher in Naguabo, while simultaneously raising 6 of her siblings when her parents traveled to New York City to find work and plant roots. Zaida and her siblings joined their parents, living in Washington Heights, Manhattan, and later Bushwick and Brownsville, Brooklyn. She worked for the Diocese of Brooklyn’s Angel Guardian Home until she moved to Wilmington, Delaware in 1976.
In Wilmington, She worked for the Latin American Community Center. Zaida also had deep ties and commitment, to her parish community, helping at the St. Paul’s Rectory with translations, and teaching CCD classes until her retirement.
Zaida was a highly independent woman with an impeccable work ethic, and a role model to all of her nieces and nephews. She invested her savings in fixer uppers, making necessary repairs and renting them over the decades. During most of her life, she selflessly sacrificed so much for the well being of her family, never asking for anything in return, except that they adhere to their Catholic faith and attend mass every week.
After retiring, she helped raise and care for her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews with unconditional love, and such boundless energy, that in her 90’s she was still squatting to play with the children at eye level. Zaida was a devoted caregiver who helped her sisters, Alicia, Ada and Carmen in their final days. She never had her own children, but she nurtured, loved and cared for so many children and family members. She instilled a love of The Lord, morality, ethics, integrity to the truth, and high standards in all those whose lives she touched. She made trips with her nieces, nephews, and visiting relatives to Mother Cabrini Shrine in Manhattan, and St. John Neumann in Philadelphia to humbly ask and pray for their intercession.
If you were blessed to know Zaida, then you knew she always had your back, especially during tough times. Zaida was highly intuitive, and if she perceived a family member was overwhelmed or in need of help, she would get in her car and show up on their door step ready to pitch in. She was very protective of her family, always there to provide her encouragement, wisdom, and advice. In her last years her brothers, Carlos (Charlie) and Ramon repeatedly thanked her for everything she did for them. They never forgot how she gave of herself for their well being, protection and future.
Zaida loved visiting her family in New York during the holidays, the family parties, and she always had an open door policy for all of her family and friends too. She loved to pass on family traditions, such as having the new generation of children work together to learn how to make pasteles for Christmas in honor of her mother, Elisa, so they could pass the torch on to their children. In 2009 she had the rare opportunity to join her family on a trip to Puerto Rico, visiting her hometown, Naguabo, San Juan and the South Western Coast, reconnecting with cousins and childhood friends.
Zaida’s family feels blessed and grateful that they could come together in September 2023 to celebrate her 99th birthday in her favorite color: pink, organized by her great nephew, Ian and her nieces. She was very touched at receiving so much genuine love and warmth, especially by the children present.
For such an extraordinary and special human being, Zaida lived her life with great humility, restraint and discipline, setting an example for those she helped raise.
She is pre-deceased by her parents, Elisa and Inez, her siblings Cesar Arturo Rodriguez of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Ada Inez Vitanza of Staten Island,NY, Carmen Mercedes Kushner and Edna Alicia Rodriguez of Wilmington, DE, Theodora Higuero of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Maria Margarita Rodriguez of Manhattan, NY.
She is survived by her brothers, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez of Queens, NY and Ramon Rodriguez of Staten Island, NY, her nieces and nephews, great neices and nephews, numerous cousins, relatives, friends and a large extended family who immensely loved her, and will miss her greatly.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the services to celebrate Zaida’s life on Wednesday, May 8th, 10:00 am at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1010 W. 4th Street Wilmington, DE 19805. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19805.

Irene Y. Olson, 93, died in Accent Care Hospice on March 3, 2024, after a brief illness. She was born on July 12, 1930, to Joseph and Mary (Bukowski) Frati and was the oldest of three daughters. She attended Saint Hedwig’s Elementary School and Wilmington High School from which she was graduated in 1948. While in high school she was a cheerleader and she played bass drum in the Pulaski Legion marching band.
On February 3, 1951, she married Evor T. Olson. Together, they had three children, Teddy, Pattie, and Joey. Irene did office work briefly after the birth of her first two children but said that she missed being with them so much that she decided to leave her job. After her youngest child entered school, Irene returned to work in 1965 at Wilmington General Hospital in the accounts payable division. The hospitals began a process of mergers until the current configuration as Christiana Care. She retired as a Supervisor of Accounts Payable in 1995. She also worked part-time jobs to help support her family. After retirement, she began a “second career” as a “nana” to her great grandson Cody, and then to her grandson, Joseph. She loved being a wife and mother, mommom and nana and she insisted on holding holiday meals in her home even into her nineties.
Irene’s Catholic faith was especially important to her, and it was nurtured by daily Mass, where she was often a reader, and by the rosary and chaplet of Divine Mercy. She was a mighty pray-er and could be relied upon to pray for special intentions.
Since 1957, when the family moved to Elsmere, they were members of Corpus Christi Parish. Irene served on the parish council and on the church building committee. She was an active member of the Diocesan Mothers Guild that provided spiritual and financial support to the Vocations Office and seminarians. She served as an officer and as president.
She was always eager to learn and engaged in Bible studies and attended a local course in Jewish studies. She retained her wits and her wit to the end. She had a love of spring. Easter was her favorite holiday. She enjoyed flowers, horses, shows, music, TV comedies, and lovely things. She collected elephant jewelry and statuary. She was strong and independent: driving, shopping, and housekeeping until her illness. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband on their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2023. Obituary Preview: Jerome W. Rousseau
Jerome Rousseau, the life partner of Renee Rousseau, and father to Christian and Anastasia Rousseau, died on Saturday, February 17, 2024, after a long illness. Having been born and raised in Vermont it was fitting that he passed away while a lovely, soft snow fell, blanketing the trees and ground.
He was a beautiful man who approached life in his own singular way. He was perfectly suited for his chosen profession. He spent 31 years as a high school teacher of social studies and history at Springfield, VT High School and, after receiving his Masters in Humanities from Dartmouth College, created special courses that included life skills and team teaching with other disciplines. Jerome thought of each of his students as unique individuals, with singular needs and personalities, and he was determined to guide each one as they worked to achieve their goals. He also gave his time as a coach, an assistant in football, track and field hockey, class advisor and theater production director.
Jerome was a creative spirit, having played several musical instruments, and he had a splendid tenor voice, lending it to musical productions with the Springfield Community Players theater group, and a special production with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. He was also a gifted artist painting with water colors, acrylics, pastels, and oils. He showed his work in several Oklahoma City galleries, and the Blue Heron gallery in New Castle.
Renee and Jerome had a short courtship and a marriage that lasted fifty-six years, each maintaining freedom in togetherness. As Kahlil Gibran wrote, “Give your hearts, but not into each others keeping, for only the hand of life can contain your hearts.” He was also a supportive father who let each of his children find their own path in life. He provided advice, guidance, gentle discipline and always a lot of love.
Jerome was born the second son of Alfred and Ida Rousseau on February 12, 1942 in Bellows Falls, Vermont and remained in Vermont until his retirement in 1997, when he and Renee moved to Oklahoma City, OK to be nearer Renee’s parents. After Renee’s father’s death they moved with Renee’s mother to New Castle, DE to be near their children and grandchildren.
Jerome is survived by his wife and his two children, son Christian and daughter Anastasia, two brothers, Alfred William and Ralph Thomas, and one sister, Charmien Dexter. He has three grandchildren, Jack and Ty (Anastasia) and Grayson (Christian).

Kelly A. Boyle - September 08, 1971 - February 15, 2024

Departed: 02/15/2024 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: We lost our beautiful and beloved sister, Kelly Ann Boyle on February 15, 2024.
Kelly has meant so much to so many people over the last 52 years; for her family she was the talented, loving, hilarious, peacekeeper who always made time for family and laughter. She was the glue that kept us together, reaching out to extended family and coordinating get togethers whenever she had the chance. Kelly treasured the many meaningful relationships she had with life-long friends, musicians, and fans.
Kelly had many health challenges over the past eight years and faced the tough times with bravery and grace – she never stopped being Kelly. Her ability to adapt and love life under circumstances that would have easily broken anyone’s spirit kept us in awe.
That spirit was driven by her passion for music and her love for animals. From a very young age, Kelly always knew she was meant to sing. She began singing professionally at 19 years old and continued to perform throughout 2023. Over the course of her musical career, she performed with various musicians on stage and in the studio for both famous and local artists. Some of the highlights include singing background vocals for Patti LaBelle, performing at the 2012 Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, playing at her brother John’s wedding in 2002, and just about everyone who knew her has a copy of her Christmas CD. However, Kelly is best known for her band of nearly 30 years, Divas of One Love, reaching local celebrity status in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Her love of animals was evident in her adoration for her cat, Belle, and the joy she felt with anything having to do with cats and dogs.
In the end, she passed peacefully with her family by her side, after saying goodbye to as many family members and friends as she was able to connect with during a brief stay in the hospital. Although we are heartbroken by this tremendous loss, we find solace in knowing she is finally free of pain.
Kelly’s bright and extraordinary spirit continues to inspire us, and we are immensely grateful to have the privilege of calling her our sister. She was such an important part of our lives and will always be loved and missed.
She is preceded by her parents John and Joan; survived by 4 siblings, John, Patty, Lori, and Colleen; sister-in-law, Janice; nieces, Alex, Jazmin, and Grace; nephews, Andrew and Jack; and great nephews, Asher, Ezra, and Oliver.
There will be a private memorial for family and close friends.
