Michael Rutigliano - February 07, 1931 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Franklin Square)
Obituary Preview: Michael Rutigliano Sr., 93, of Franklin Square, NY and Boca Raton, Florida, passed peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Michael was born to Antonio and Anna Rutigliano, Italian immigrants from Bitetto, Italy, on February 7, 1931. Michael spent his childhood working for his family on the ice truck. He was drafted at 21 years old into the Army and sent to Fort Breckenridge, Kentucky. He was stationed in Germany from 1952 to 1954. While the Korean War wound down, he returned home to Brooklyn and met his wife, Dolores Antonelli. Michael was called to the NYPD in 1959 and served 20 years, most of that time in the 20th precinct. Together, Michael and Dolores raised three children
in Brooklyn, New York, Monroe, New York, and Douglaston, Queens.
Serving as an Officer in the NYPD from 1959-1979, he lived a life most people only get to see on TV. His cop stories are something that will be cherished forever. At home, he was an amazingly devoted husband and father, with a magic to turn the simplest things in life into the biggest adventures. Life for him and his family was filled with days at Manhattan Beach, Coney Island fireworks, late-night drive-in movies, road trips with his parents, and countless summer days where the Brooklyn family spent time at the Monroe house. Michael lost Dolores, the love of his life, to long-protracted illness in March 2000.
Michael, affectionately known to his family as Poppy, was kind, loving, giving, generous, and had an amazing gift when it came to connecting with people. Recently described as “The greatest man I’ve ever known” by his granddaughter Toni Marie, truer words could not be spoken. He had an amazing sense of humor, and a spirit that could light up a room. He enjoyed years of joining his grandchildren as they played sports, performed in dance recitals, and many other school activities. His time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren was inspiring.
Mike met Connie Ciccone in Boca Raton, Florida and they spent many loving years together enjoying the warm weather and traveling. Mike and Connie provided each other with laughter, adventure, travel, and an extended family. They went on cruises, countless trips to the Bahamas, casino visits, and loved each other’s families as their own. Michael is predeceased by his loving wife, Dolores. He is survived by his loving and devoted children, Ann Marie Dodd, Lillian Sforza, and Michael Rutigliano II and his wife Veronica; adoring grandchildren Toni Marie (spouse Jason), Ashley (spouse David), Kristina, Michael III (spouse Casey), Dominic, Vincent, and his six great-grandchildren, Peyton, Grace, Emma, Luke,
Michael IV, and Liam.
A true blessing to be the Patriarch of such a loving family, his legacy will live on through the words and actions of those he loved so much.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for those who are grieving.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or memorials in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or platform. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a print or online publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or edits, while others may not. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary for publication.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the death, you can opt for a private or password-protected online obituary. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

How long are online obituaries typically archived?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries may remain archived indefinitely, while others may be removed after a certain period of time (e.g., 1-5 years).

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or interests.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or professional obituary writer.

This depends on the platform or website. Some may allow links to memorial websites, donation pages, or social media profiles, while others may not.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report any errors. They will work with you to correct the mistake and republish the revised obituary.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and connecting with others who are grieving.
