Betty Jeanne Zoerb - June 22, 1937 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Parkston)
Obituary Preview: Parkston – Betty Jeanne Zoerb, 86, went to her heavenly home Tuesday, April 23 at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Funeral service will be Friday, April 26 at 2:00 pm, with visitation beginning at 12:30 pm, at Parkston Congregational Church in Parkston. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston. Betty Jeanne Zoerb was born June 22nd, 1937, in Ainsworth Nebraska to Lambert and Violet (Alberts) Jerred. Throughout her childhood she lived all over Nebraska and Idaho. While attending school no matter where they lived, Betty rode her horse to school or walked. She graduated from Butte High School in Butte, Nebraska 1953. While working as a ranch hand for her sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Gerald Painter, she met the love of her life Kenneth (Bud) Zoerb. The two were married in a small service on October 8th, 1954, in O’Neill Nebraska. After their honeymoon in the Black Hills, they sold 10 Hereford Bulls and bought their own ranch. They ranched for 13 years outside of Newport, Nebraska and welcomed four children: Terry, Lyle, Ellen, Roxane (Roxie) before moving to Parkston, SD in 1967. They opened the Gambles Hardware Store until it burnt down in 1979. They opened another store Hardware Hank which they ran until 1983. She then sold Tupperware for a few years and then later became a cook at the Parkston Elementary and High School where she became known to many kids as “Grandma Betty.”
Bud and Betty were never apart and did everything together. Their grandkids were the highlights of their lives. They would never take less than 10 grandkids at a time on camping trips all over the country. From these adventures great memories were made, like when Bud forgot Betty on the side of the interstate to fried SPAM over the campfire, forts with refrigerator boxes, playing marbles, milk shakes, popcorn before bed, homemade birthday cakes, playing “Monster”, bike rides to the Dairy Mart, coffee for breakfast, many trips to the swimming pool, going to the bakery for donuts, and riding bikes with grandma are just a few of the things her grandkids will hold close to their hearts.
Betty was an amazing seamstress and often made her grandkids clothes. When she retired, she opened her own business of “Betty’s Stitch and Sew.” You would often find her for hours on end in her sewing room, doing her favorite thing, patching jeans! She loved to knit, sew, embroider, quilt, and make dishcloths while in her glider rocking chair watching her “soaps.” There wasn’t anything she couldn’t fix with a needle and thread, or her favorite weapon of choice, Duct Tape. She was an amazing cook that was always ready to feed an army. If you showed up on a Saturday during college football season you better have been prepared to listen to the Nebraska Huskers game on the radio.
Her sass and spunk were not lost even when the Dementia took over. She was often caught stealing snacks from the Nurses desk drawers, pinching nurses butts and laughing while she walked away, and calling “BS” when she didn’t agree with something.
She is survived by her children: Terry (Kathy) Zoerb, Waynesville, OH; Lyle (Jane) Zoerb, Brandon, SD; Ellen (Jim) Neugebauer, Dimock, SD; Roxie Bialas, Sioux Falls, SD. Her Grandchildren: Jon (Carly) Zoerb, Nichole (John) Conrad, Holly (Aaron) Hall, Terry (Megan) Zoerb Jr., Ben (Dana) Neugebauer, Kelly (Jammy) Strand, Nadia (Michael) Haller, Wade (Kristen) Bialas, Katherine Zoerb, Amanda Robinson, Larissa Neugebauer, Lura Zoerb, Mike (Kim) Zoerb. 15 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her dog Patches.
She is preceded in death by her “Sweetie” Bud, siblings: Lucille (Herman) Schrolten, Mildred (Gerald) Painter, Rollin (Myra) Jerred. Her parents Lambert and Violet, In-Laws John and EliseZoerb.

Obituary Preview: Rodney Gene Roth, 80 years old (of Bridgewater, SD), passed away unexpectedly at his farm on February 9, 2024. Funeral service will be Friday, February 16 at 10:30 am, with visitation beginning at 9:30 am, at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston, followed by a luncheon. Burial will follow at Wolf Creek Congregational Church Cemetery (intersection of 428 Ave and 274th St).
Rodney was born in Freeman on January 16, 1944. He was the third child of Ida Sophia (Schoppert) and Elmer Fred Roth. Rodney attended country school at Gross District 64 and later Freeman High School (graduating in 1962). He married Renee Christensen (of Freeman) in 1964, and three daughters were born of this 28-year union. The couple started out in Tyndall and Yankton and then moved to Minneapolis where Rodney attended Dunwoody College of Technology, graduating in 1967 with a certificate in tool and die making. Rodney worked with metals for three years before returning to SD in 1970 after his father’s farm accident and taking over the family farm in 1973. Many things brought joy to Rodney’s life, including the church, nature, hunting, trapping, backpacking, playing darts, watching the Vikings, and spending time with loved ones. In 1981 he helped found Hope Lutheran Church (Freeman). Later he volunteered with the M-2 Program that helps prison innates integrate back into society. Most recently, he started gardening and donated fresh vegetables to the Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater. Rodney was proud in the last years of his life to have read his Bible cover-to-cover twice. Ater his death, his fiancé found a letter tucked inside the Bible in which he wrote to his children, grandchildren, and friends. The opening paragraph of that letter reads: “My backpacking, hunting, and trapping gave me a chance to be close to God’s creation. Nature brings me back to reality, what it’s all about. Seeing how the animals, plants, insects, birds, and seasons are in such harmony with each other, the way everything is planned out, depending on each other for survival. Only someone like our Holy Father could have planned something so beautiful and balanced as this.” The closing of his letter reads: “I’m sure I can’t describe God’s final journey we all will see. His promise, where we meet all our loved ones that have gone before us, those to come. Where I’ll have all the time and patience for my children, grandchildren, mother and father, and close friends. So after all that, I hope nobody is sad when that day comes. Laugh and be happy for me and my final journey. My lungs will be full of oxygen, my legs will not tire, and my joints will not ache. And if I should stumble, I’m sure a hand will guide me. Love, Rod (your dad, your grandfather, and friend).”
He was in the process of retiring and was making plans for the future. He had recently obtained a passport and, having just sold his cattle, he was actively planning visits to family near and far. On the day he died, he and Donna had gone to the Parkston Wellness Center to workout, had lunch at the Dugout in Tripp, drove around scouting out potential turkey hunting locations, and was eagerly awaiting his turkey hunting license (which arrived the next day).
Rodney is survived by his three daughters (Lori Lassen, LuAnne Roth, and Lynae Roth and husband Joel Dombovy), his fiancé Donna Fauth (of Bridgewater) and her children (Kyle Tucker and Joel Fauth and wife Krystal Fauth), his brother and sister-in-law (Kenny and June Roth), his three nieces and nephews (Karla Rebo, Craig Roth, and Suzette Oolman), and his five grandchildren (Nathan Lassen, Hannah Lassen, Kahlil Roth-Folly, Kellen Dombovy, and Kaden Dombovy) and five step-grandchildren (Cora Tucker, Brystel Tucker, Jaxsen Tucker, Ava Fauth and Mya Fauth). Rodney is also survived by the mother of his children along with his second wife (Debbie Cable) and her three children.

Florence Ann Taylor - December 17, 1929 - January 02, 2024

Departed: 01/02/2024 (Parkston)
Obituary Preview: Florence Ann Taylor passed away peacefully on January 2 at the age of 94 with her family at her side. The seventh of twelve children of Ed and Josephine (Friedrich) Murtha, Ann was born on the family’s farm southwest of Parkston, SD. After studying at Notre Dame in Mitchell, SD, Ann taught for a year in a one-room schoolhouse near Parkston. She then headed west to Black Hills Teachers College to continue her education. It was there that the beautiful Ann met a handsome young airman from Illinois, Warren Taylor. The two married on June 11, 1951, at Parkston’s Sacred Heart Church. Within weeks, the newlyweds who had each scarcely left their respective family farms, shipped off for a series of life-changing adventures on Air Force bases in England, Germany, and the United States.
Following 21 years of military life and having made many lifelong friends, Ann and Warren settled in Princeton, Illinois. Ann was involved in countless church, school, and civic organizations, using her boundless energy and talents to enrich the lives of her children and to serve her local communities. She was known to break into an old-time song when she thought it might elicit a smile or use her razor-sharp wit to crack a perfectly timed one-liner. She was always there for anyone in need, from the new family arriving at an Air Force Base to the neighborhood kids in need of a Scout Leader.
