Emagene Essick - February 12, 1928 - December 18, 2023

Departed: 12/18/2023 (Chandler)
Obituary Preview: Emagene (Tupper) Essick, 95, of Chandler, IN died on December 18, 2023. Gene was born in Evansville, IN February 12, 1928 to Elmer and Emma (Sheer) Tupper. She married Charles L. Essick on April 19, 1952. He preceded her in death in September of 1998.
Warrick County would not be the same without Gene. Through her deeds, influence, and progeny, she has left a mark that many of us dream of but will never achieve. Establishing residence on 2nd Street in Chandler in 1958, Gene and her husband Charles made being part of the community a priority. Strong bonds with neighbors and a church community through the Chandler Cumberland Presbyterian Church established them as a steadfast family in the community.
Service to her community became the central focus of Gene’s public life. Volunteer stints on the Chandler Parks Board and Newburgh/Chandler Public Library Boards resulted in new sports parks and libraries for the community. She served in many volunteer positions in local churches, Kiwanis, The Lions Club, SWIRCA, The Warrick County Council on Aging, and community focused organizations. Over the last few years, this manifested in hours of service to local food and clothing banks. Her passion was to improve the community she loved for everyone.
Professionally, Gene cast a long shadow of influence over the education system as school secretary at Castle High School and then as the longtime Executive Assistant to five Warrick County School Superintendents. Her time serving in education proved fortuitous for her daughters, Marva L. Essick and Gina G. Berridge (Marc). Both followed her into the professional education field, holding high ranking positions in state and local education systems as teachers and administrators. Their professional achievements made Gene extremely proud.
Her public service paled in comparison to her love of her family, especially her 5 grandchildren: Brad (Ashley), Matthew (Kimberly), Lucas (Anna Gray), Laura (Rob), and Adam (Dana). Her devotion to giving each one of them confidence with unflinching love has sustained all of them into adulthood. Known to them and to many in the community as Nana, she was always prepared with a ghost story, a practical joke, and candy or soda to make sure everyone had a laugh, stayed humble, and was properly caffeinated when she returned them to their parents. Gene continued this tradition with her 8 great-grandchildren (Emma, Charles, Parker, Nola, Mazzy, Sadie, Lily, and Lockeland) so that her grandchildren understood the full spectrum of parenting.
Gene was the last surviving member of a group of seven childhood friends that met monthly to play cards for more than 70 years.
She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions in her name can be made to Chandler Cumberland Presbyterian Church’s Food Pantry.
