Bill later graduated from the University of South Dakota earning a bachelor’s degree.

Bill later attended Western Iowa Technical Community College (WITCC) for computer programing. With that education, he taught as an adjunct instructor at WITCC and worked as a mainframe computer programmer for various companies. Following this time, he began his career as a petroleum landman, spanning 20 years. Bill truly enjoyed the time spent in over 60 different courthouses in 12 different states.
Bill married Beverly Loiseau on November 18, 1972, and they had 3 children: Jim, Will and Ellen. Bill was especially proud of his children, and the successful adults they became. While raising their children, Bill and Beverly enjoyed attending all their activities: cross-country, debate and 4-H. His voice was the loudest from the sidelines, always cheering on the kids. Bill served as a Leader for the 4-H Horse Club for many years. He served for many years as a member and President of the State 4-H Horse Committee. For countless years, Bill’s meticulous maintenance has kept the Clay County Park Rodeo Grounds well cared for. As such, this arena and grounds continue to hold horse events.
During retirement, Bill worked part-time at Runnings in Vermillion until his health forced him into a second retirement. Here he enjoyed helping people solve their plumbing and electrical repair problems while visiting with them.
In his spare time, Bill enjoyed maintaining their acreage. There was always another project to undertake, and sitting still was not part of his personality. Sarah Ella Marcine Tiahrt - September 17, 1927 - December 08, 2023

Departed: 12/08/2023 (Vermillion)
Obituary Preview: On the 8th of December, 2023, Sarah Ella Marcine Tiahrt traded the terrestrial raiment of the present to receive the timeless robes prepared for her by our Holy Savior. In a moment, she stepped from where we are, to where we all hope to go. Treasured wife, esteemed mother, cherished mentor, and valued confidant, Marcine’s generous spirit welcomed and embraced everyone she met.
Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, December 12th, at the Kober Funeral Home, 402 E. Main Street, Vermillion, SD, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The funeral service will be Wednesday, December 13th, at Faith Fellowship of the Open Bible, 1415 Stanford Street Vermillion, SD, beginning at 10:30 AM.
Sarah Ella Marcine Steele was born Anno Domini September 17, 1927, to Jessie May Braden Steele and John William Steele. John was putting up hay, and Jessie gave birth at home. Jessie’s doctor had told her that she would have no children, but the hand of God would not be stayed by any medical prognosis. Marcine was born miraculously, and three years later, her sister Mary Ruth followed her. Tragically, Jessie died when Marcine was just eight. Her father never complained about being a single parent and never looked back.
Marcine enrolled in Central Bible College in 1945 and, in 1946, met her best friend and soulmate there, a WWII veteran named Wilbur E. Tiahrt. Wilbur and Marcine married Friday, November 26, 1948, in the Assemblies of God Church in the bustling community of Meckling, SD.
Marcine and Wilbur began their life together pastoring a small church in Naper, Nebraska. They went on to pastor churches in Yankton, South Dakota, and Coleridge, Nebraska. None of these churches could support full-time pastors, so Wilbur worked on the farm for Marcine’s father. And the farm is where they raised their children.
And each of Marcine’s children was blessed by her soul-enriching affirmation that formed a rock-solid foundation on which to build a career and a life. Marcine’s youngest, Susan Janos, was the vice-president of marketing for the Harrison publishing empire but gave up the executive life to serve as a chaplain. Sara Steever is the former President and current Chief Technical Officer of Paulsen Agency, a marketing agency with a worldwide clientele. Todd served eight terms in the House as a United States Representative and now works as an advocate for the blind. Thomas teaches business analytics and statistics at the University of South Dakota.
Marcine served in a variety of roles as an organizer, administrator, facilitator, teacher, and presenter for Sunday School, Women’s Aglow, The Gideons International, VFW Auxiliary, Youth-for-Christ, and Missionettes. Even in her nineties, she held a weekly meeting praying for everyone from the family members of the attendees to the President of the United States. Marcine always focused on helping others; people were central, and everything else revolved around their importance.
Marcine’s absence from the life temporal is grieved by all who knew her kindness, warmth, and hospitality. But Marcine’s presence in the life eternal was anticipated by all who knew her gentle spirit, perseverance, endurance, and panoramic focus. Marcine embraced the important issues and worked hard to play her part in resolving them.
Mater ave atque vale. We shall miss you, Mother. But we shall see you again.
Marcine was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur E. Tiahrt, her parents, John William and Jessie May Braden Steele; her sister, Mary Ruth (John) Armstrong and grandson Luke Tiahrt. She is survived by her son Todd (Vicki) Tiahrt of Goddard, KS, Thomas (Cheryl) Tiahrt of Wakonda, Sara (John) Steever of Lennox, SD, and Susan (Christopher) Janos of Lexington, KY. In addition, she is survived by grandchildren Jessica (Liam) Healy, John (Ashley) Tiahrt, Christian Janos, Raleigh (Monica) Tiahrt, Alexandrea (John) Welbig, Skylar (Sabrina) Tiahrt, Kenan Tiahrt, Michael Janos, John (Anna) Steever, and Elizabeth Steever, along with twelve great-grandchildren.
Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion has been entrusted with this service. Condolences may be posted online at www.KoberFuneralHome.com.

Craig Dallas Martin - March 01, 1972 - October 05, 2023

Departed: 10/05/2023 (Vermillion)
Obituary Preview: Craig Dallas Martin, 51, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Craig left this earth doing what he loved to do most...riding his Harley. A tragic accident occurred near Alton, Iowa on Sunday, October 1, when Craig was returning home from a day of riding and visiting with friends.
Craig spent most of his life living in Sioux City and graduated from North High School. After high school, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Japan, Denver, CO and at Rapid City, SD. Craig continued his service with the Air Force Reserve and retired after 20+ years as a Master Sergeant in January 2017. He was activated for the September 11th attacks and was also in Kuwait for 6 months in 2005-2006. Craig worked as a truck driver at FedEx Freight for 25+ years; he drove truck nights from Sioux City to Kansas City. Craig was proud of his military service and his work at FedEx. Craig was very proud of his children, Collin, 20, and Cayden, 18, born to him and his ex-wife Shauna Semon. Gym time was a big thing for Craig and working out was a daily passion; he especially enjoyed workouts when Collin could join him at the gym. Craig also had daddy/daughter spa days where he and Cayden would get pedicures. Craig’s eyes would roll up in his head and he’d say that “pedicures felt sooo good.”
Family and friends were important to Craig. He was a responsible man and was always the first to help his friends and family. The man had skills and was not afraid of a challenge...he taught himself to do many things (plumbing, flooring, installing ceiling fans and doors, etc.) by trial and error...or he always knew someone he could ask for instructions.
Craig was a good friend to all. Whenever he didn’t agree or was tired of arguing, he would say “we’ll agree to disagree”. He was a hugger, quick-witted, always had fun, and lived life to the fullest. He had many friends from his childhood that were still good friends until the day he died. He enjoyed camping, using his smoker and grill to cook, and evenings around a firepit (he and Collin would see who could build the bigger/hotter fire). On his many motorcycle trips (that were often random, spur-of-the- moment trips) to the Black Hills, Colorado, or basically anywhere, Craig would look for restaurants/dive bars that were off the beaten path. He was always up for taking pictures with family and friends, even though he had a wonky finger on each hand that seemed to fly as the camera shutter was released. Anyone that Craig was close to never had to question his loyalty. Craig was a “certain kind of special.” He was always there for everyone.
Craig is predeceased by his father, Russell Martin; his paternal and maternal grandparents; his stepfather, former mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Survivors include his mother, LaVonne Griffin; children, Collin and Cayden; sister Kim Martin; stepbrother and stepsister Jeff (Teri) Eichmann and Diane (Ken) Geary; nieces and nephew Amber, Emma, and Ethan Kelly; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Donald Edward Forseth - March 17, 1944 - August 17, 2023

Departed: 08/17/2023 (Vermillion)
Obituary Preview: Donald Edward Forseth, 79, of Vermillion, South Dakota passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023 in Vermillion after a prolonged illness.
The first 18 years of his life, he lived in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was raised by his loving parents, Edward and Rosalind (Storeim) Forseth. Don had one sister, Susan.
Summers were spent at Enemy Swim Lake, where his parents had a cottage. Water skiing became the sport of choice, and he soon was teaching anyone who wanted to learn.
After graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1962, Don attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Music was always a central part of his life. With renowned choirs at college, he became known as the recorder of sacred music. In addition to choral music, he enjoyed Opera and Classical. In 1966, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
His next venture led him to Vermillion. After earning a Master Degree, he soon began working for South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Don was a major factor in the completion of several broadcasting towers throughout South Dakota. Thousands of people were now able to have receptions for both T.V., and Radio. Retirement (reluctant) came after 49 years of service.
Don was a generous man. He gave freely of his time as a public official at the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission. He was also elected to serve on Vermillion’s City Council. One of his great joys was being a part of the Vermillion Fire Department where he was a volunteer for 47 years. Those friendships were a very vital part of his life.
He was also generous with his friends and would gladly help anyone with a project – large or small. His extensive knowledge of tools and mechanics allowed him to assist without hesitation.
Don truly enjoyed his life in Vermillion. While he gave much to the town, the town provided him with many friends and work associates.
One of his last ventures was attending his niece’s wedding in September of 2021 near Cape Cod in Massachusetts. It was also a wonderful reunion with his sister and her husband.
He is survived by his only sister, Susan Rippon (Clif) who resides in Boise Idaho; his niece, Elizabeth Gallardo (Jon) and their baby, Daniel, who lives in Marlboro, Massachusetts.
Don will be greatly missed.
If you wish, you can make a donation in Don’s name to the Vermillion Fire Department.

Samuel B. Hatton - February 13, 1934 - August 06, 2023

Departed: 08/06/2023 (Vermillion)
Obituary Preview: Samuel Hatton, 89, of Vermillion, South Dakota passed away Sunday, August 6, 2023 at Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Samuel B. Hatton, “S.B.” or “B,” was born on February 13, 1934, the youngest of ten children born to David and Russie Hatton, of Talihina, Oklahoma. There, he learned his lifelong love of hunting and fishing under the tutelage of his beloved mother, and his great sense of caring for others from his older brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and lifelong friends, who took care of him in the years after his mother’s death. In high school, Sam was an enthusiastic member and president of his local FFA (Future Farmers of America) and a talented ball player, winning recognition, particularly, as a fine running back and passer in the game of football.
Sam’s long residence in the state of South Dakota began in 1958 when he was first stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Through friends, he met the love of his life, Joanne Moberg, who he diligently courted by driving the distance between Rapid City and Sioux Falls regularly. They were married on December 30, 1959 at Ahlsborg Lutheran Church in the Spink community of Union County. They maintained their close connection to the community through frequent trips back to visit Joanne’s family, whom he loved dearly. In 1974, they purchased a farm in Spink and moved “home,” to South Dakota, where Sam lived the remainder of his life.
Sam began his adult life working in Illinois and California, before joining the United States Air Force in 1954, in the same tradition of his older brothers. He lived and served in France and Germany as a young airman. As a military family, the Hattons lived in states across the county where Sam developed his skills as a radio technician, ultimately serving during the Vietnam Conflict as a B-52 Bomb-NavTechnician. MSgt. Samuel B. Hatton served his county for 20 years.
After retirement, Sam and Joanne settled their family onto a farm in Spink, South Dakota, where he spent many years tending not only his own crops, but also those of his retired father-in-law and many neighbors who trusted him as a conscientious and hardworking man. For close to 30 years, Sam farmed, before “retiring” to take up the Pro-Am and then Professional Walleye fishing circuit, traveling with Joanne across the country once more. Always, still, South Dakota was home. He remained a devoted member of the Brule Creek Church community and friend to local folk throughout the area. He continued to lend a hand to neighbors during harvest season.
In 2010, Sam was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Joanne and Sam sold their farm in 2014 and moved to Vermillion, SD, where they have lived ever since. Never one to sit still for long, he continued to fish with old friends and worked tirelessly with family to remodel the old South Spink Schoolhouse which was moved to family land retained after the sale of the farm. His daughter lives there now.
Sam was preceded in death by many loved ones, including his parents and 9 brothers and sisters, as well as his in-laws, who he regarded as “Mom and Dad.” The aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who he lost were many as Sam was a man who considered many as “family.” Most recently, his brother-in-law, Steve, and his grandson-in-law, Charlie, went on before him and Sam vowed to take them “fishing” on the very day he finally arrived, August 6, 2023.
Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Joanne (Moberg), his son, David (Karla) of Mena, Arkansas, his daughter, Lora (Gil) of Spink and Monona, Wisconsin, 6 grandchildren–Curt, Josie, Nancee, Nikki, Lolly (Tony) and Kenlei (Ethan)–and 7 great-grandchildren (Max, Cal, Nina, Dominic, Cece, Oliver and Cami). They have all been frequent visitors of the places Sam called “home.” His cousin, Leslie Hatton (92) remains in Oklahoma. His closest friend and “brother,” Bob Anderson of Volin, remains to look after the family he left behind. Sam believed his life was blessed by many and Sam was a blessing in the lives of many. He will be missed very much.
Services and a luncheon in celebration of Sam’s life will be held at Brule Creek Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 12th. Internment will take place in the Ahlsborg Cemetery, nearby.
