Robert George Hines - January 14, 1948 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Roanoke)
Obituary Preview: Robert G. Hines, age 76, passed from this world on February 18, 2024, succumbing to a long-term health issue. Bob was born on January 14, 1948, in Pekin, Illinois, and lived most of his life in Roanoke, a town he loved. His parents were Robert C. Hines and Rose Elaine Wolf Hines Bonetto, both of whom preceded him in death. Bob and his mother shared a home in rural Roanoke for many years. He appreciated the quiet and beauty of the countryside.Bob graduated from Northern Illinois University with a B.S. in political science. As a lifelong learner, he also attended classes at ICC, and he always made lists of words to incorporate into his vocabulary. He was particularly well-versed in 19th and 20th century American and European history. Bob considered himself enigmatic and his taste in music and books eclectic. Those who remember him know that he freely shared his thoughts and opinions—of which there were always many! He also was known for his keen wit and unique sense of humor.Despite being a curmudgeon, a moniker he loved, Bob greatly enjoyed interacting with people. That is why the majority of his work experience was as a barkeep. He owned The Shire in Chicago for a while, and then returned to Roanoke where he worked in a local establishment for many years. Bob also may be remembered for working as a Roanoke police officer following the death of his father. For a time, he worked for RGIS as an inventory supervisor. One of his favorite jobs was as the night watchman at Pfister’s farm. This gave him time to read and contemplate life, along with his furry companion, Stacy.Family members preceding him in death: brother-in-law, William Dooley; niece, Colleen Dooley; step-father, Anthony Bonetto; and step-sister, Gloria Bonetto. Survivors include his sister, Jo Marie Dooley of Seattle; niece, Megan Dooley; nephew, Jason Dooley; son, Robbie Dewitt; step-sister, Shari (Terry) West; step-brother, Bruce (Janice) Bonetto; step-nieces Teresa (Paul) Holmes, Melissa (Nick) Kinsey, Janelle (Jake) Washer; Andrea (Brad) Biorn; and step-nephews Anthony West, Jon West, and Matthew (Mindy) West. In addition, there are many grand-nieces and -nephews.An informal gathering to honor Robert will be held on Tuesday, February 27 at 2 p.m. in Roanoke at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home. All are welcome. Those attending will have the opportunity to share any memories they have of Bob. People unable to attend may send thoughts and memories to rgh141948@gmail.com. At a later date, his ashes will be laid to rest in Pekin alongside his father. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Robert’s name to the Roanoke Library (send to: Illinois Prairie District Library, 208 E. Partridge St., PO Box 7, Metamora, IL 61548).
Robert G. He appreciated the quiet and beauty of the countryside.
Bob graduated from Northern Illinois University with a B.S. in political science. He also was known for his keen wit and unique sense of humor.
Despite being a curmudgeon, a moniker he loved, Bob greatly enjoyed interacting with people. This gave him time to read and contemplate life, along with his furry companion, Stacy.
Family members preceding him in death: brother-in-law, William Dooley; niece, Colleen Dooley; step-father, Anthony Bonetto; and step-sister, Gloria Bonetto. Survivors include his sister, Jo Marie Dooley of Seattle; niece, Megan Dooley; nephew, Jason Dooley; son, Robbie Dewitt; step-sister, Shari (Terry) West; step-brother, Bruce (Janice) Bonetto; step-nieces Teresa (Paul) Holmes, Melissa (Nick) Kinsey, Janelle (Jake) Washer; Andrea (Brad) Biorn; and step-nephews Anthony West, Jon West, and Matthew (Mindy) West. In addition, there are many grand-nieces and -nephews.
An informal gathering to honor Robert will be held on Tuesday, February 27 at 2 p.m. in Roanoke at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home.
