Raymond Floyd Baker - September 18, 1942 - March 19, 2021

Departed: 03/19/2021 (Sturgis)
Obituary Preview: Raymond Floyd Baker was born on September 18, 1942 to Floyd and Roxona (Mobley) Baker in the sod house his grandpa built on the family homestead in Hereford, SD. He attended the Doyle School through the 8th grade when, at this point in his life, he was a working man, helping work the family farm/ranch at the original homestead where he stayed his entire life. Ray was a hard worker and was well-liked by those around him. Along with working the family farm/ranch, he would take on many additional jobs to help support his family. From working three sale barns and the oil fields driving truck, to working the missile sites and a summer working road construction where he was the lead man on site, Ray did it all. As anyone who knows Ray would say, furs have been a huge part of his entire life: from a kid learning and loving the art of trapping from his dad, to shooting enough jack rabbits to buy a car, Ray loved every moment of it. He so enjoyed the 17 years spent plane hunting coyotes as the gunner. He was a heck of a shot, and had the stories to go with all these years of plane hunting. Even after hanging up the plane hunting, Ray was well known as the local area fur buyer, buying furs alongside his daughter, Tonya, and processing a pile of hides every winter for 25 years. Ray also worked for many different neighbors in the area throughout his life – haying, lambing, and farming, he knew about keeping that square baler running.
In his later years, his focus and hardworking attitude were on his cow herd, which he took a great deal of pride in. From driving the chuck wagon for the annual cattle drive, to keeping a close eye on the daily ranch needs, he poured himself into it. His beloved grandchildren were a big part of his life, and he always made time to attend their activities, being on the sideline for every football game and cheering from the stands at every rodeo. You could always find him bragging and telling stories about his grandkids and all that they accomplished.
On December 9, 1967, Ray was united in marriage to Mary E. Bryant in Piedmont, SD. Throughout their 49 years of marriage, the couple raised their five children, Cody, Tonya, Roxona, Lawonza, and Joseph on the Baker family farm/ranch in Hereford, SD.
Raymond Floyd Baker, 78, died Friday, March 19, 2021 at his home on the ranch in Hereford, SD. He had resided on the farm/ranch homestead, which was founded in 1907, from his birth until passing, where he was surround by his children and grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his children, Cody (Lynn) Baker of Rapid City, SD, Tonya Baker of Union Center, SD, and Roxona (Dana) Thompson, Lawonza (Brad) Montague, and Joseph Baker, all of New Underwood, SD; his grandchildren, Trevor Baker, Keely (Kenny) Carmichael, Nicholas Baker, Rowdy Thompson, Taylin Montague, Luke Thompson, Kade Montague, and Hank Baker; a sister-in-law, Frankie Baker; and numerous nephews and nieces that held a special place in his heart.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary; his parents, Floyd and Roxona Baker; his brother, Elroy Baker; and four sisters, Beatrice Johnson, Mary Birdwell, Florence Hemenway, and Betty Sever and their spouses.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at the Foothills Community Church in Sturgis, with Pastor Harold Delbridge and Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at the Baker Family Cemetery in Hereford, SD.

Evangeline Laverne Albrecht - Unknown - March 15, 2021

Departed: 03/15/2021 (Sturgis)
Obituary Preview: Evangeline "Vangie" Albrecht was born in Herreid, SD, on July 12, 1930, to Albert and Mary (Aipperspach) Jahraus. On Monday March 15, 2021, Evangeline, Vangie or Blondie (however you knew her) went to be with the Lord and the love of her love life -- Lefty.
She grew up near the Burlington Northern rail yard in Aberdeen, SD. She started working at a young age, at many jobs to help support her family. She often made comments that she and her brothers and sisters would go along the tracks to pick up coal that had fallen from the train to heat the house. Often the boiler men would give them a shovel full or two to make their quest to heat the family home a little easier.
At the end of WWII, she met a dark-haired hunk of a man and he soon became the love of her life (Lefty) as he was returning home from WWII. They met, courted and were married March 13, 1949, in Aberdeen, SD. In 1956, the two packed up two kids and all of their belongings and moved to the Black Hills where Lefty worked at the Homestake Mine. They became lovers of the Black Hills and often said it was the most beautiful place.
Vangie took on jobs that she could do in the house (she was the original work from home mom) as she washed and ironed clothes for many of the executives at the Homestake mine and others. In 1970 she re-entered the workforce as a baker at the Lead City Bakery. In the late 70’s she worked at the Motherlode restaurant for a few years doing baking and preparing hand crafted salads. She had a love for baking and she eventually went to work for Nash Finch as a baker where she eventually retired from SunMart grocery. After a few years in retirement, she was asked if she could bake cookies and make the customers feel welcome at the Deadwood Gulch Resort. She loved this work and they loved her as much. She would often say this was the best job she ever had and wished she could work forever. Vangie and Lefty could often be found spending time at the local dance halls dancing, and on occasion spinning the wheels in a casino in Deadwood, or going for long walks around the neighborhood! On any given day, they could be found listening to many different polkas and waltzes on the jukebox!
Vangie will be remembered for her kindness, positivity, acceptance, caring, compassion and unconditional love. She made our life so much easier, happier and full of love and joy every day we spent together and even the days we didn't.
If you knew her, she was likely your sweet, caring, kind friend and if you didn’t, she would never have hesitated to hold her hand out and invite you into her life with Lefty by her side and their family making space around her table because there was ALWAYS room for extras.
She was so simplistic in a posh perfect, ahead of her times kind of way. She baked fancy pastries, cupcakes, cookies, donuts and dessert with so much finesse & love before it was the "trendy thing" to do. Her every meal was the envy of foodies near & far loaded up with tender loving care, laughter and good conversation for whoever dropped in for a visit. She will be greatly missed.
Vangie was active in the VFW Auxiliary; she was a lifetime member. She was a very proud American and even more proud of her children.
Evangeline, "Vangie" "Blondie" Albrecht passed away comfortably in March. 15, 2021, at Judy’s Assisted Living where she had resided for four years and was compassionately cared for by Judy and her team.
She is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Ray) Stoor, and Tami (Ralph) Long; three sons, Steve (Debbie), Mark (Sherilyn), and Brent (Julie); grandchildren, Dawn, Dusk, Adam, Wyatt, Cody, Meggan, Balie, and Matt; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Gary; her parent’s; three brothers, Leroy, Wally, Robert; and two sisters, Della Blando, and Anne Schaffer.
Vangie will be missed by her family and those that knew her.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March. 20, 2021, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Inurnment will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2021, at Black Hills National cemetery, near Sturgis.

Ann was born November 17, 1950 and raised by her parents, Walter and Edith Guhl. Ann and her brother, John, grew up and attended school in Oakland, NE. After high school, Ann attended college, where she graduated from Bonner Beauty School in Fremont, NE. Ann and Miles continued sharing their lives together along with their combined family and friends for the next 19 years, including celebrating Ann’s victory over lung cancer in 2010. The two eventually moved from Fremont, NE and settled in South Dakota. There was a continuing love for rival college teams, as Ann loved her Cornhuskers and Miles supported his favorite team (not to be mentioned), that borders western Nebraska.
When Ann was not at work, she enjoyed spending her time socializing with friends, crocheting blankets for family, taking car rides while listening to music, and maybe most of all, supporting her Nebraska Cornhuskers with her dogs by her side. Although Ann did not favor a team with a Buffalo mascot, she did favor the actual Buffalo itself, which she enjoyed observing during travel and vacations.

Frances J. Olson - June 22, 1932 - March 01, 2021

Departed: 03/01/2021 (Sturgis)
Obituary Preview: Frances J. (Bell) Olson, born June 22, 1932 in Reeder, ND to Roy and Olive Bell, passed away on March 1, 2021.
Frances spent her first 16 years in Ralph, SD on the family ranch. She grew up with two sisters, Kathryn and Irene. Frances, being the middle child, didn’t seem to get into the trouble that the other two girls supposedly did. She enjoyed riding her horse, Rainbow and playing with her dog, Sandy, and the family goat, Pete. She attended grade school at Norbeck Country School. Her high school years were spent with different host families in Buffalo, SD, where she graduated at the age of 16 as salutatorian. She attended business college in Rapid City, SD, where she then took a position working at Rushmore Mutual Life Insurance Company.
She married Dan E. Olson on September 28, 1950. Last year they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They spent the first few years of their married life in Rapid City before moving out to the Hoover Ranch. There they raised their four children; Craig was born in 1952, Scott in 1954, Joan in 1957, and Clay in 1961. The first couple of years at the ranch she had no electricity, indoor plumbing, or water. She used to heat the house and cook on a fuel oil heater. They got their water from a well a half a mile away. In Dan’s words, she was quite the woman, and she made the best of everything with no complaint.
Frances stayed busy with the ranch and raising 4 children, but she still found time to play the piano for many special occasions and give lessons to any of the neighbor kids that were willing. She made quilts with the ladies of the Newell Lutheran Church, and she participated in Make it Yourself with Wool and the Sheep Growers. One of her greatest joys was having two of her grandchildren, Blayne and Cady, only two miles away. Oh, the adventures that they went on! Surely, there are still coffee cans full of the “precious” rocks that they had collected along the way. Even after they went off to college, they would receive care packages with their favorite cookies or Grandma’s famous donuts! Frances felt fortunate having Joan live next door. Joan was her constant companion, and later in life, her caregiver. They enjoyed horseback riding in their younger years and even tried their hand at cross country skiing. Clay and Molly came to the ranch in 1988 to “take over” all the hard labor of running a ranch. However, Dan, at the age of 92 is still helping with chores and Frances was still helping at the lambing barn at the age of 72! Last year was the first official year that she didn’t assist directly in feeding the shearers!
Frances is survived by her husband, Dan; son, Scott, of AZ; daughter, Joan, and son, Clay (Molly), both of Hoover; grandchildren, Blayne (Kelsey) of Sioux Falls, Cady of Brookings, Cheryl Ann of Bridgewater, MA, and Genevieve of Albuquerque, NM; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; and her sister, Irene (Harry) Haivala of Spearfish. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Olive Bell; son, Craig; granddaughter, Devon; and sister, Kathryn.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2021 at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Kris Garlick officiating. The service will also be live streamed to the funeral home’s website to allow virtual attendance. Burial will follow at the Hoover Cemetery.

Ruby Marie VanDenBerg - September 27, 1925 - February 28, 2021

Departed: 02/28/2021 (Sturgis)
Obituary Preview: Ruby (Haggart) VanDenBerg left South Dakota for her heavenly home on February 28, 2021. Ruby celebrated life with aplomb and vivaciousness, always with a song on her lips and in her heart, with a dance step or two to keep life lively. Ruby celebrated 95 years of living in September of 2020, and continues that joy with Jesus, who was her steadfast rock.
Herman and Ruby lived south of Prairie City for 67 years before selling their beloved ranch in 2014 and moving to Spearfish. The VanDenBerg Ranch attained a Century Farm status in 2013. This ranch was where they raised their six children; Marilyn, Cindy, Susan, Gloria, Wynn, and Lisa. Ruby raised her family to be responsible with ranch chores, to have respect for teachers and elders, and to help others. A large summer garden was therefore a family affair.
Ruby served as 4-H leader and often volunteered at fair time to enter open class exhibits and assist with judging them. Ruby was a lifelong resident of Perkins County, and had the distinction of being the 2nd Annual “Friend of the Fair”, an honor bestowed upon her by the Perkins County Fair Board in 2018. Ruby was raised in the Date, SD community approximately 40 miles southwest of Bison, by her parents Rube and Ida Haggart. She attended Highland County School through the 8th grade, and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1942. Following graduation, she moved west to Spokane, WA to live with her sister Dorothy. Ruby attended business school while waiting tables. She also worked in a garage, polishing cars for a while. Later, the sisters moved to Seattle and Ruby worked in an insurance agency. She had the distinction of being selected “Valentine’s Day Queen” while in Seattle. In the fall of 1946, Ruby returned home for a visit and was courted by Herman VanDenBerg. “My feet got stuck in the gumbo,” she joked, and she stayed. They were married June 11, 1947 and celebrated 70 years of good times, tough times, sad times, and glad times. She said, “our family was always there for one another.”
Ruby Van, as she’s affectionately called, was a 60+ year member of the Hand-E-Hands Extension Club in their rural Zeona Community in Southwest Perkins County. She also held offices on the Perkins County Council. Even after the Hand-E-Hands Club disbanded, she remained active as a member at large in the county organization, Perkins County CFEL, where she held several offices and was a project leader. In 1998, she received the Perkins County CFEL Honored Homemaker Award. She often represented Perkins County as a voting member at state conventions. As a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zeona, Ruby taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and attended Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Fairview Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ruby always had the coffee pot on, with either homemade bread or cinnamon rolls just coming out of the oven, for visitors that often stopped by and were received with a welcome smile!
After Ruby and Herman’s move to Spearfish, they became active participants in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed making new acquaintances.
Ruby is survived by her five daughters; many grand and great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilbur Haggart; and a sister, Marjori Warner.
She is preceded in her journey to heaven by her husband, Herman; son, Wynn; parents, Rube and Ida Haggart; her sisters and brothers; and grandchildren.
Ruby would say to you: “go forth with a song on your lips and love for the Lord”. You can be assured that she is dancing with Praise at this moment.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning one hour prior, on Friday, March 5, 2021 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spearfish with Pastor Stephan Sandness officiating. Burial will follow at the Prairie City Cemetery in Prairie City, SD.
