Departed: 03/04/2022 (Lee)
Obituary Preview: Marion Foote Carrington, of Lee, MA, 99 years old, passed away on 3/4/2022 at Berkshire Medical Center (just 3 weeks before her 100th Birthday)
Born at her home, in Lee, MA, on March 25, 1922, Marion was the daughter of the late Leon Charles Winthrop Foote and the late Olga Mary Merwin Renz Foote. She also was the granddaughter of the late Charles Nelson Foote and the late Alice Bell Lathrop Foote.
Marion was a descendent of the Foote family who were among the first settlers to establish a farm and live in Lee, MA in 1776. The present house, built in 1815 on the original site, was her birthplace and life-long residence. The farm was called Monte Vista for its views of the surrounding mountains. Also, her early Foote relatives were founding members of the first “Lee Meeting House” built in 1778, now, the First Congregational Church of Lee which is located at 25 Park Place, Lee, MA.
She attended Lee Schools and was an Honor student, graduating from Lee High School, class of 1939. She was awarded the Cottage Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded to a deserving 4-H member in a New England state. The award, made by the education committee of the New England Farm and Garden Association, consisted of first-year expenses at Massachusetts State College (aka University of Massachusetts). She attended the University of Massachusetts from 1940 – 1941.
Marion was very active in 4-H programs, completing 13 projects in eight years of 4-H work, taking four years of clothing, four years of gardening, three years of dairy and one year of canning. She was a county dress winner, attended Eastern States Dairy Camp, and was prominent in 4-H Service Club activities. Marion was a delegate to the American Youth Foundation Camp in Michigan and also served as a junior counselor at County 4-H Camp. She held offices in the County 4-H Dairy Association, the County 4-H Leader’s Association and the Lee 4-H committee. She was also a clothing and cooking 4-H club leader in Lee.
In 1936, Marion was one of 175 delegates who attended the 14th annual 4-H Club camp in Washington, D.C. Also in 1936, she established a small, profitable egg route after her parents had given her 10 white Leg-horn pullets.
The big hurricane of 1938 struck New England while she was attending the Eastern States Exposition, in Springfield, MA on the very day she was to show her prize heifer. She said, “everyone was evacuated; it was very exciting – the boys led the animals to safety across the bridge in Agawam”. Marion made many friends through 4-H.
Later in her life, she started a 4-H cooking club and held meetings at her house weekly to teach her daughter and many other young girls how to cook. She also performed judging duties of exhibits at Berkshire County 4-H Fairs.
Marion was a Census taker for the Town of Lee, MA for a number of years. Marion also worked at the England Brothers Store in Pittsfield during the Christmas season.
She met her husband, Frank Ward Carrington, through her involvement in 4-H work. They were married March 7, 1942. As a young man coming back home after serving in World War II, he wanted to be a farmer and the Foote farm was a perfect place for the newlyweds to live, work and raise their family. Together they had a dairy farm and grew corn and various vegetables to sell at a stand in front of their house. A large sign next to the stand prominently displayed “Marion’s Famous Sweet Corn”. After Mr. Carrington died in a tractor accident June 17, 1991, Marion continued the Farm Stand until she was in her late 80’s.
Marion was a member of the First Congregational Church of Lee, and was very active in the life of the church serving on various committees. She was the oldest member of the church at the time of her passing.

Arlene Curtiss Duquette - March 04, 1923 - January 28, 2022

Departed: 01/28/2022 (Lee)
Obituary Preview: Arlene Curtiss Benjamin Duquette was born March 4th, 1923, in Lee, Massachusetts. She passed away peacefully on January 28th at Kimball Farms Nursing Center in Lenox, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her Father, Rutherford (Dick) Curtiss Benjamin, of Southbury, CT, her Mother, Florence Elizabeth Cobb of Housatonic Mass, her ex husband of 28 years, Arnold (Duke) Clarke Duquette of Pittsfield, Mass, cherished siblings, brother, Retired Colonel George Cobb Benjamin, sisters Jane Brown, and Dorothy Brunell. How do you share a full well lived life of 98 years in a single page?
To begin, Arlene graduated from Lee High School in 1940, where she was one of the first three original cheerleaders for Lee High. She attended Jackson College for Women in Medford, Mass., and graduated from Pittsfield Secretarial School in the summer of 1941. In 1942 she married Duke in Biloxi, Mississippi during World War II. After the war they lived in Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland, Indiana, California, and Florida. In 1970 Arlene moved back to Lee for many years. She and Duke had 4 children together: Barbara Hancock (Woody), Golden, CO, Pam Duquette, Sandpoint, ID, David Duquette, (Carleen) Lee, Mass, and Judy Duquette (David King) also of Lee.
Those early days of marriage instilled in her a love of traveling. She enjoyed visiting her children who were at times spread across the country, (even one living at a time in Germany), and enjoyed her eleven grandchildren, who affectionately called her Meemaw, Meme or Meems as it later became: Bryce and Matthew Hancock, Christopher and Brian Consolati, Amanda Duquette; Jessica White, Jedediah Duquette, Acacia Grant ; Asher and Trinity Duquette-Dismuke; and Danielle Lesnau, as well as her 18 great grandchildren.
When not visiting family and old friends, you might have found her in the Caribbean on one of many Windjammer Cruises, Heli-Hiking in the Purcell Mountains in Alberta, Canada, accompanying a friend to New Zealand, whitewater rafting on the Salmon River, Idaho, walking on the beach in Sanibel Island, Florida, or taking opportunities around the country enjoying eleven ElderHostel trips.
Some of her travel involved her continued ability to find occupations that interested her. As an independent single woman, Arlene was always one to go after something she wanted, showing she was never too old to try something new. She was employed as a private legal secretary in Maryland and Florida, worked in the legal department of Allegheny Airlines in Washington, DC, was a secretary for Kimberly Clark in Lee, and retired as an office manager at Ski Butternut, in Great Barrington. However, retirement did not stop her from volunteering and working part time once as a guide at Chesterwood Museum in Stockbridge, MA, and at the National Archives in Pittsfield. She became a receptionist at Canyon Ranch in her 60s and was still going strong at 89 years old, had a health issue not slowed her down, who knows what she would have found to keep herself busy and productive. In 2017 she moved into Kimball Farms for her last days.
She also was interested in genealogy, loved to read and play cards with family and friends, and enjoyed playing golf at Greenock Country Club where she was also Treasurer for a few years.
Throughout the years she touched many people and had a positive impact on their lives. She was loved not only by her family, but by friends and acquaintances she had. She had the ability to share her personality with people wherever she went. In 2012 she decided to write her life’s story for her children and their children. The last words she wrote were: “There is nothing that you cannot do if you put your minds to it. Even though I am broke (financially), I am richer than I ever thought I would be and so this is it .Have fun, take trips, don’t worry about things you can’t change, change what you can, and take my blessings and love with you always.” She will be remembered and missed by us all! We would like to thank the entire staff at Kimball Farms for the care and compassion shown to our mom the last 4 1/2 years, also to Hospice Care of the Berkshires for providing comfort for mom's final journey.
Per Arlene’s request, there will be no wake or services at the funeral home and no flowers. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Hospice Care of the Berkshires or the donor’s favorite charity. A celebration of life will be at a later date. Steven John Brouker - October 20, 1952 - January 22, 2022

Departed: 01/22/2022 (Lee)
Obituary Preview: Steven John Brouker, 69, left this world on Saturday, January 22, 2022, following a recent illness. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on October 20, 1952, to Phyllis and John Brouker of Lee, Massachusetts, Steven graduated from Lee High School in 1971 and later earned an Associate’s Degree from the State University of New York, Albany.
Steven married Cynthia Flint, the love of his life, on June 25, 1977.
Steven proudly served his country in the United States Navy for twenty-four years, enlisting in 1971 and retiring in 1995, having earned the rank Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-4). During his honorable career in aviation ordnance, Steven became a commissioned officer in 1988 and was awarded the prestigious “Ordnance Officer of the Year”, from the United States Navy for his exemplary service during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He was also a veteran of the Vietnam War. Known by his call sign “Gunner”, he served aboard the flight decks of the USS Ranger (CVA-61), USS Forrestal (CVA-59), USS Saratoga (CVA-60), USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14), USS Eisenhower (CVA-69), and the USS America (CVA-66).
In all that the “Gunner” experienced traveling the seven seas, what was most notable about his military service was his unbounded leadership and service to his shipmates. CWO-4 Brouker was a formidable force for good. He inspired all those who served with him.
A consummate storyteller, Steven was a walking sea shanty. Over an ice-cold cola, puffing on his tobacco pipe and donning his beloved New York Yankees cap, his tales were legendary. If he wasn’t telling stories in his garage, he was working on his vintage cars, and listening to the “oldies”. Following his retirement, Steve worked at Mead Specialty Paper in Lee, P.A.S. in Lenoxdale, and as a substitute teacher and playground monitor at Lee Elementary School.
Steven is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Flint) Brouker, his daughter, Kristen Brouker-Botelho and her husband, Kevin Botelho, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, his daughter Brittany Brouker of Lee, his granddaughter, Olivia Rose Aldrich of Hampton Bays, NY, his brother, Jeffrey Brouker and his wife, Debbie, of Becket, and his extended family including many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and pets, who he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Brouker Aldrich.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Steven will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022, at 11 am at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lenox Dale, MA with Monsignor John Bonzagni, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery in Pittsfield. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2022, from 4-6 pm at Kelly Funeral Home in Lee.

Daniel MacDonald - January 29, 1932 - December 22, 2021

Departed: 12/22/2021 (Lee)
Obituary Preview: Daniel MacDonald, 89, of Lee Ma., passed peacefully from the loving arms of his family and close friends into to the arms of his Lord on December 22, 2021.
Danny was born in Springfield, MA on January 29,1932.  While living in Stockbridge, MA in 1992 Danny and Kitty met and the start of an amazing relationship began.  Over a few years-time,  Kitty and Danny grew very close and decided they wanted to live together in a unique model called Shared Living through Nonotuck Resource Associates. In 1996 Danny moved into Kitty’s home with her young family.  The ensuing 26 years were filled with such love, joy, amusement, and an outgrowth of a plethora of unique and special relationships that bonded Danny and his community, family, friends and supporters of all ages. Together they lived an amazingly active and exciting life.
Dan cherished the growing years with his Shared Living extended family. He took great pleasure in “everything” that involved Dillon and Devin Curtin.  People of all ages and circumstances were drawn to Danny and cared for him- as he did for them. He loved and was deeply loved by them.
Danny lived a very active life with his family and friends.  Their favorite activities included attending and helping with sporting events from youth through varsity years. Saturday tag sales across Berkshire County and Sunday flea markets were the norm. No matter where they were, Dan could never pass up a good tag sale to attain another great DVD or album. He was proud of his extensive collection- of which Christmas was his favorite. Bowling was a sport that Dan was dedicated to. He bowled with a team on a Lee league for many years and took great pride in his large collection of trophies.  Dan really enjoyed all things golf related. He dabbled in golf at the ranges and putting greens, but most of all he loved cart driving, which allowed for taking in all that a beautiful course had to offer. Dan experienced dozens of courses from the Berkshires to Cape Cod with George and Kitty.
Danny loved trips to Cape Cod. The ocean, the golf, drives across the Cape. No maps were allowed as the ocean’s edge was their guide. After more than 50 trips with family and friends, the Cape became his second home.
He loved gadgets.  He loved to (mysteriously) fix things around the house, and he was the great organizer.  Dan was always very helpful and diligently kept a close eye on all of us.
As Dan was predeceased by many special family and friends; so does he leave.  Dan leaves Kitty Kelly-Curtin, Dillon and Devin Curtin and the extended families.  He also leaves special friends and supporters -George Fleischner, Jodi Carlino, Christopher Symanowicz, Maggy Walto, the Crew, his friends at BAROCO, and many more.
Without a word - Danny gave so much to so many.  His was a life well lived.
It is with both great sadness and joy that on January 29, 2022- we will celebrate Dan’s 90th birthday, the 30 years we shared together here on earth and his eternal life in Heaven.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 29th at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Church in Lee.  Internment of his ashes will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to Nonotuck Resource Associates Gift Fund, 425 Prospect Street, Northampton, MA 01060.
