Sister Mary Jane (Sister M. Augustin) Honan, C.S.C. - March 05, 1923 - April 24, 2022

Departed: 04/24/2022 (South Bend)
Obituary Preview: Entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross from Naugatuck, Connecticut on August 1, 1944 Initial Profession of Vows on February 2, 1947 Some say that Sister Mary Jane Honan at 99 years old did not want the fuss and attention of the traditional summer celebration of her 75th jubilee of initial profession of vows as a Sister of the Holy Cross. In her own way she had already quietly observed the anniversary in February, the last of her entrance group or band. She died at Saint Mary’s Convent on the morning of April 24, 2022, where she had lived the last seven years devoted to a ministry of prayer. Many sisters kept vigil with her and staff attended her. Sister Rachel Anne Callahan, CSC, wrote from Silver Spring, Maryland, that Sister Mary Jane had “the grace of the ordinary” and was “a simple servant and reservoir of wisdom to many of us.” Where did that grace and wisdom come from?
Mary Jane Honan was born on March 5, 1923 in Waterbury, Connecticut to parents, Michael Joseph Honan and Ethel (McEneaney) Honan.  She grew up with her two younger sisters, Evelyn and Jean, in Naugatuck, Connecticut, where her father was a funeral director.  After completing St. Francis Grade School and Naugatuck High School, she attended Dunbarton College of the Holy Cross in Washington, D.C., earning a BA degree in English in 1944.  She found living on a college campus in a large city quite different from life in a small New England town.  During the last two years of World War II there were frequent air raids, black outs, as well as unease among the students.   Many had fathers or brothers in the military.  Here, Mary Jane first met the Sisters of the Holy Cross who sponsored and taught at the college.  She claimed that their prayerfulness, love of community, kindness and apostolic spirit awakened within her the desire to become a member of their religious family.
Entering the Congregation at Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, Indiana, the summer of her graduation from college, she received the religious name, Sister M. Augustin.  During her first six years of ministry, which began in 1946, she was a high school teacher of English in several schools sponsored or staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Cross in the District of Columbia and Virginia.  From 1952-1964 she was a professor of English at Cardinal Cushing College in Brookline, Massachusetts.  Her summer months were devoted to study.  In 1955 she earned a master’s degree in English from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.  Subsequent summers found her continuing graduate studies in English at Boston College and graduate studies in secondary school administration at Columbia University in New York.
Following her 12 years at Cardinal Cushing College, she was appointed principal and religious superior at Saint Mary’s Academy in Alexandria, Virginia.   This assignment ended with her election in 1969 as regional superior of the Eastern Secondary Region of the Congregation.  Her role as a regional leader lasted four years until her election as a general councilor of the Congregation, a position she held for 12 years.  The time she spent as a general councilor shifted the focus of her activities away from the classroom to the welfare of the Congregation as a whole.  During these years she selected the option that became available to change her religious name back to her baptismal name.
When her second term as general councilor ended in 1984, she volunteered together with two other sisters to undertake a new venture for the Congregation in the Archdiocese of New Orleans--the   opening, administration and staffing of a skilled nursing facility for 180 residents in Marrero, Louisiana.  For five challenging years she remained on the administrative staff of the Wynhoven Health Care Center.  She has said that she was grateful for the opportunity to work with elderly residents, learning from them how to deal with suffering and diminishment.  Her desire to continue to minister to the elderly led to her appointment in 1989 for seven years as superior and administrator of Saint Angela Hall in Kensington, Maryland, the Eastern Region’s retirement home with over 40 sisters in residence.  Four years followed as assistant superior at Saint Mary’s Convent, Notre Dame, Indiana.
At the end of this service she spent a year in California with time for rest and spiritual renewal, part of which, she lived at Saint Catherine by the Sea Convent in Ventura. While there she spent time at the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange, south of Los Angeles, in an inter-community experience of lectures, prayer, reflection, and leisurely pursuits.  She thoroughly enjoyed her time in California before returning east to retire at Saint Angela Hall in 2001, where she lived a community life of prayer, joy, and volunteer service to others in Silver Spring.  In 2015 she retired to Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, Indiana.
Sister Mary Jane was a wise and simple woman who had a deep spirituality rooted in dependence on God.  She said she approached each day with hope and enthusiasm trying to meet the challenges that faced her.  Throughout her life she served on a number of boards in the fields of education and health care, including the following: Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana; the Holy Cross Health System Corporation, South Bend, Indiana; Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, Maryland; Saint John’s Health Care, Anderson, Indiana; Mount Carmel Health, Columbus, Ohio; and Holy Cross Care Services, South Bend, Indiana.  Her enjoyment of community life, along with her common sense and willingness to face new challenges, were strong characteristics of her personality.  Favorite activities included listening to good music, solving crossword puzzles, swimming, visiting places of interest, and reading—especially the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Look up Dickinson’s poem, “I’m Nobody! Who are you?”  Sister had always been able to set others at ease, never trying to be a “Somebody” herself.
Sister Mary Jane died on the second Sunday of Easter when the Catholic Church observes God’s Divine Mercy. The sisters remembered her and all our beloved dead at the community Mass. “Dona nobis pacem”, “Grant us peace,” sang the assembly. God’s mercy endures forever.  Alleluia! Our sister is home and enjoys the fullness of God’s grace.
Services will be held on Thursday, April 28, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto.  Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., with Prayers in the Presence of the Body with memento beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of the Resurrection. The service livestreamed on the Church of Loretto YouTube channel at  https://youtu.be/b2z912wcGOI .  You may wish to donate in Sister’s name to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund at www.cscsisters.org   Kaniewski Funeral Homes is assisting with arrangements. --  Written by Sister Grace Shonk, CSC

Mary Elizabeth Kopko - October 29, 1958 - March 30, 2022

Departed: 03/30/2022 (South Bend)
Obituary Preview: Funeral Livestream: https://campusministry.nd.edu/mass-worship/basilica-of-the-sacred-heart/funeral-live-stream/ Mary Elizabeth Kopko (née Bonte) October 29, 1958 – March 30, 2022
Mary Elizabeth Kopko (née Bonte) passed away on March 30, 2022 with her family at her side.  She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Frederick Henry Kopko, Jr., and their children, Elizabeth Mary Kopko (and her husband Peter), Thomas Frederick Kopko (and his wife Andrea) and Catherine Martha Kopko, and adored granddaughter, Mirabell Elizabeth Kopko.  She is also survived by many other family members and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Born in Moline, Illinois to the late Kenneth and Mary Bonte, Mary Beth graduated from Alleman High School in 1976 where she earned varsity letters in tennis, softball and basketball and was named Quad-City Athlete of the Year.  She went on to receive a B.A., magna cum laude, in 1980 from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana and a J.D., magna cum laude, in 1983 from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois where she was an editor of the Law Review.
After law school, Mary Beth joined the Legal Assistance Foundation (LAF) to represent people living in poverty in and around Chicago.  While at LAF, she successfully argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on behalf of surviving family members deprived of certain disability benefits under Social Security Act.  See Marcus v. Sullivan, 926 F.2d 604 (7th Cir. 1991).  In 1995, she was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation.  Following years of service at LAF (which included serving as its union President), Mary Beth became a partner at McBreen & Kopko LLP, a multi-state law firm based in Chicago, where she specialized in social security disability and supplemental security income cases and other general appellate work.  In connection with Governor Ryan’s moratorium on capital punishment in Illinois back in January 2000, she joined a task force formed to examine the death penalty process in Illinois and make specific recommendations to the Office of the Governor.  During that time, she also represented death row inmates in post-conviction appeals.
In 1986, Mary Beth and her husband Fred bought the Kenwood home built in 1903 for Julius Rosenwald, then Chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Company, a founder of Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry and a renowned philanthropist.  In recognition of that historic restoration, Mary Beth and Fred received a preservation award from the Hyde Park Historical Society in 1989.
Mary Beth was an active member of her community and longtime parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Chicago, where she was a former president of the School Board, a founding member of the Endowment Committee and a co-founder of the School’s inaugural Pre-Kindergarten program.  For the last twelve years, she resided with her husband Fred at their Caribbean home on the United States Virgin Island of Saint Thomas.  There, she founded Caribbean Rose, a non-profit organization that supports, among other things, the annual Virgin Island Billfish Tournament for Haiti and the Virgin Island Jaguars Small Fry Basketball Franchise.  She was a caring person, devoted wife, selfless mother and generous friend, always thinking of others first.  To know her was to love her, and to be loved by her was a gift.
A funeral mass will be held at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. CT (3:30 p.m. ET) with Rev. Peter M. McCormick, C.S.C. officiating.  Memorial donations may be made on Mary Beth’s behalf to the Ensemble Scolaire Pere Basile Moreau Secondary School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, at www.caribbeanrose.org/donate.html, or another charity of one’s choice to help those less fortunate.

Joseph Blenkinsopp - April 03, 1927 - March 26, 2022

Departed: 03/26/2022 (South Bend)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Blenkinsopp, 94, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Saturday morning, March 26, at Wedgewood Pines Assisted Living Facility. Joe was born on April 3, 1927 in County Durham, England to William and Mary Blenkinsopp. At the age of 11, he was sent to boarding school in County Cheshire. He went on to study at the University of London and the Biblical Institute in Rome, before earning a Ph.d in Biblical Studies at Oxford University in 1967. Over the course of a long academic career, he taught in England, Italy, and Guatemala, and a number of institutions in the United States, including Chicago Theological Seminary, Hartford Seminary Foundation, and Vanderbilt University. He joined the faculty of the University of Notre Dame in 1970, and shortly thereafter he was named the John A. O’Brien Professor of Biblical Studies. He retired from Notre Dame in 1999, but continued to pursue his academic interests through writing, scholarly conferences, and occasional teaching until almost the end of his life. He was Rector of the Tantur Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem in 1978, and a guest professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome in 1998. He was a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association (1988-1989) and the Society for the Study of the Old Testament (1999-2000), as well as a recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mellon Institute. He is generally regarded as one of the foremost scholars of his generation in the field of Hebrew Bible studies. He was the author of more than twenty-five books and numerous articles, including A History of Prophecy in Israel and The Pentateuch, both considered to be standard treatments of their subjects, and a three volume Anchor Bible commentary on the Book of Isaiah. His last book, Luke’s Jesus: Between Incarnation and Crucifixion was published in October, 2021. At the same time, his distinguished scholarly career represents only one aspect of his life. A life-long Catholic, he combined rigorous historical scholarship with deep faith, and taught by his example that faith and learning are not incompatible. He was alive to life’s ironies, but his sense of humor was warm and playful, never cynical or unkind. A generous and hospitable man, he loved to entertain. He was an avid gardener and he faithfully provided seed for, in his words, “the local bird community.” In addition, he enjoyed opera, art and travel. Above all, he was a warm and loving husband, father, and friend, who touched innumerable lives with his deep kindness and his care for others. He will be deeply missed. His first marriage to Irene Blenkinsopp ended in divorce. His wife Jean Porter survives him, as do his sons, David Blenkinsopp and Martin Blenkinsopp (Ann Robinson), and his grandson, Graham Blenkinsopp. He is preceded in death by his parents and by two sisters, Vera Pearson and Winifred Tinsdale.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022 in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, followed by a Catholic Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Wedgewood Pines, whose warm and competent care made Joe’s last months not only safe, but happy.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Catholic Charities USA, Hope Rescue Mission, or South Bend Center for the Homeless.

Departed: 03/18/2022 (South Bend)
Obituary Preview: SOUTH BEND - Robert "Herby" Hintz, 59, of South Bend, passed away on Friday March 18, 2022 at his home.  He was born on September 28, 1962 in South Bend, to the late Robert and Irene (Domnanovich) Hintz and was a lifelong area resident.  He is survived by his sister, Susan Hintz and his brother, Joseph Hintz, both of South Bend.      First and foremost, Herby was a very devout Catholic who frequently attended daily Mass and had a strong devotion to The Blessed Mother.  He attended Christ the King Grade School and graduated from Clay High School in 1981.  He played football at Clay as both an offensive and defensive lineman, rarely missing a down, when Jon Gruden was Clay’s quarterback.  As a baseball player for Clay Township J.B.A. he won 2 Championships in 1976 and 1979 and won an additional Championship in 1983  as their head coach for several years. He was a huge fan of all things Notre Dame from the Grotto and Basilica to his beloved ND Football.  In his younger days, he enjoyed competitive golf outings with Dad and Joe and was hard to beat. He even scored a hole in one in 1995 at a charity event.   As a member of UAW Local #5, he spent his working career at AM General starting at the Chippewa plant then at McKinley to build the Humvee, the Commercial Hummer, and the H2      Herby was passionate about his vegetable and flower gardens and inherited his green thumb from his parents.    Tending his gardens with loving care was his way of showing glory and honor to God.  Each year he would marvel at the miracle of planting tiny seeds which within a few weeks God turned into a spectacular abundance of food.  As thanksgiving to God he vowed never to charge a dime for the produce he distributed.   In his small backyard plot, each year he picked over 600 cucumbers and hundreds of tomatoes, green beans, and peppers to deliver weekly to various local charities, family, and friends.  His daily table of free vegetables set out in the front yard was enjoyed so much by passersby that someone once took the table as well as the veggies.  On the day he passed, he had already rototilled his garden as well as Joe's garden, doing what he loved.     Herby had a quick wit, was a good storyteller, and loved to make people laugh.  He lived in the family home where we were raised and he cared for our parents in their declining years.  Along with his sister and brother, Herby is survived by his beloved Auntie Helen Domnanovich, Aunt Judy (Hintz) Cira, Uncles Norbert and Raymond Hintz and numerous cousins whom he loved dearly.  Herby was preceded in death by our father in 2000 and mother in 2006.  Also preceding him were his Grandmother Veronica Hintz, Grandfather John Domnanovich, Uncles Joe Pinter and Bill Cira, and Aunts Gertrude Pinter, Margery Hintz, and Barbara Hintz.  We are lost without you, little brother, and will miss you forever!     A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday March 27, 2022 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N.
