Barbara May Henze - February 04, 1941 - September 21, 2023

Departed: 09/21/2023 (Shell Rock)
Obituary Preview: *Barb's service was previously listed as private, this is now a public event.*
Barbara May (Friis) Henze, 82, of Shell Rock, Iowa passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born on February 4, 1941, to Roger & Florence Friis. After finishing her schooling, she was united in marriage to James Henze on June 5th, 1960, in Janesville, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons, Scott & Todd. Barb enjoyed her career as a bank teller for the State Bank of Waverly, most will remember her as the drive-up teller with the twinkle in her eye and the smile that could brighten anyone’s day. To her friends and loved ones, she was Barb, Barbie & Grandma Barb (Gram). Her family was the joy of her life, and she was devoted to each one, including those who weren’t biologically her own. The last four years, she was fond of saying that her two great-grandsons had put a “spark back into her life”.
“Hot darn” she loved spending the summers boating, camping, and fishing at Lake Mille Lacs, MN with her husband and their boys when they were growing up. She continued the tradition of summers at the lake with her sons and her granddaughters in Clear Lake, IA. She loved to decorate for holidays, special occasions, or any old day. Her home was filled with treasures that warmed our hearts and usually brought a smirk to our faces… to which she would reply “oh, sit on it and spin”. She enjoyed reading romance novels but had the terrible habit of always reading the ending first, before she decided if the whole thing was worth her time. Some of her fondest memories were of lunches and trips spent with her best friend Nancy, and with her cousins. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and always insisted on making a personalized cake from scratch for each family birthday. She was thoroughly “tickled” to pass along her talents in the kitchen to her granddaughters. She would find the positive in any situation and never spoke an ill word of anyone. Her faith, love, strength, courage, tenderness, grace, positivity, kindness, and genuine nature forever shaped the lives and personalities of her family and friends. Her love was truly unconditional, pure & endless. The best parts of us will always be because of her.
Barbara was survived by her sons, Scott (Christie) Henze & Todd Henze; her granddaughters, Whitney (Spencer) Tidman, Miranda (Cody) Henze & Maresa Henze; her great-grandsons, Ridley Henze & Ryken Tidman; her nieces, nephews & cousins. She was proceeded in death by her husband James Henze, her parents Roger & Florence Friis, & her sister Joyce (Harold) Hinz.

Departed: 08/31/2023 (Shell Rock)
Obituary Preview: Lorraine Faye (Renning) Vossberg, age 94, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock.
Faye was born August 1, 1929, on the Henry Renning farm, one mile east of Shell Rock on Grove Road, the oldest child of Clinton C. Renning and Aletta Bernice Burwell Renning. At the age of three the family moved to their farm two miles south of Shell Rock. Faye grew up on this farm, now owned by her brother, Jim, and his wife, Barbara. She attended the one room country school, Salem #5, kindergarten through eighth grade. Faye was a 1946 graduate of Shell Rock High School. She received a scholarship to a business school in Minneapolis. Her parents thought she was too young to leave Iowa—she was 16.
After graduation she worked at Lutheran Mutual Life in the premium accounting department until September of 1947.
In April of 1946 she met Bob Vossberg at the Silver Bell Roller Rink in rural New Hartford. He had just been discharged from the Marine Corps after serving four years.
On August 19, 1947, she married Bob in Zion Lutheran Church, Macon, Missouri with Rev. Victor H. Grimm officiating.
The couple farmed in the Janesville and Shell Rock areas until March of 1950, when they moved into Shell Rock. They bought their home on Walnut Street in February 1952. Faye started working as a night telephone operator for the Shell Rock Telephone Company in 1960, continuing in the business office until March of 1983.
Faye was baptized March 30, 1947, by Rev. G. W. Baker at the Methodist Church in Shell Rock. She was confirmed December 21, 1947, by Rev. Richard Gutknecht at Peace Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. She taught Sunday School and Bible School for several years. In October 1992, she became a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Faye was a member of the Shell Rock Music Association for 17 years, having been a member of the original swing band, playing tenor sax. She had also been a member of the Shell Rock Book Review Club.
After retiring from the telephone company, she continued her interest in genealogy, tracing both her parents’ and Bob’s parents’ families. Through this research she formed many friendships and did research for other people, including for the local library and museum.
She became interested in Shell Rock history, collecting many items of interest and sharing much of this during Shell Rock’s Sesquicentennial and through the efforts of a dedicated committee, the culmination being a History of Shell Rock, published in 2006.
Faye shared the love of motorcycles with Bob, having her own at one time (a Honda), and also a Cushman scooter. She kept her motorcycle license valid until she was 80 years old.
Faye and Bob thoroughly enjoyed their retirement years, realizing this was indeed a blessing from God.
She is survived by three children and their families: Bonnie and Douglas Smalley, Clive, Iowa; Michael and Karen Vossberg, Bowling Green, Virginia; David and Sandy Vossberg, Palmetto, Florida; and Jack Cain, son-in-law, Clarksville. Her oldest daughter, Mary Lynn Cain, passed away April 10, 2022.

Michael John Hall Jr. - February 27, 1981 - March 11, 2023

Departed: 03/11/2023 (Shell Rock)
Obituary Preview: Michael John Hall, Jr. “Carpie” 42, of Clarksville, Iowa walked through Heaven’s gates March 11th, 2023.
Michael was born in Waterloo, Iowa February 27th, 1981. He attended school in Allison, Iowa, graduating from Allison-Bristow in 1999 where he was active in golf, basketball, and baseball. He attended Lineman School at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, Iowa. He worked for Butler County REC for nearly 20 years; first as a lineman for many years, then being promoted to Coordinating Crew Chief.
In 2013, he met Molly who he regularly called “the love of his life” and “everything he wished for.” They laughed, joked and loved their way through this life. Mike would often surprise her with flowers or gifts on special occasions or no reason at all. Together, they built their family, at the center of which were their four little girls: Kaidance, Mya, Madasyn, and Jordyn, who all share their home in Clarksville.
Michael was a fierce family man. Family was his priority and he never missed one of his kids’ many activities. He was a master at punishments, having his daughters write sentences, hold hands, put them in t-shirts together, and many more. Each weekend he cooked his girls big breakfast of whatever they wanted, and always served up his special pancakes. The girls would beg Mike to make his homemade pizza where he would end up making four pizzas with each of their own toppings. He often said, “How did those pretty faces get so dirty?” The girls loved the rare occasion when they could talk him into singing Da Turdy Point Buck, he knew every word. He allowed his girls to paint his nails and fix his hair, which included ponytails, headbands, and beautiful bows. His number one priority was to protect and fiercely fight for his kids.
To say that Michael was one of the hardest workers and most selfless men that ever walked the earth is not an exaggeration. Everyone that knew Mike knew he would do anything for his family, friends, neighbors, or anyone else who needed his help. He was an avid outdoorsman, with a passion for deer hunting and fishing and planted a garden that Molly said could end world hunger. He was a Kansas City Chiefs fan, who also enjoyed watching Hawkeye basketball and football. His family never went hungry as he was a master on the grill. He could fix anything around the house or on a vehicle and could also put together a Barbie house and do a ponytail with the best of them. He remodeled things around the house and could turn his mom and Molly’s dream Pinterest projects into reality. He was not a fan.
He was a believer in and follower of Jesus Christ, and because of this he walks in Heaven and we will be with him again.
He is survived by his loving wife, Molly and 4 beautiful daughters; parents, Mike and Mary Hall of Allison, Iowa; sisters Michelle Einck (Todd) of Allision, Iowa and Megan Freitag (Grant) of Sumner, Iowa. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents James and Barbara Oltmann, paternal grandparents Ray and Delilah Hall, Uncle James W. Oltmann, Uncle Myron Hall, and cousin Levi Hall.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 20, 2023 at 10:30 am at Crosspoint Church in Waverly with Pastor Jonathan Barthalow officiating. (There is an elevator located in the northwest corner of the church if needed) Burial will follow in Allison Cemetery. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary often falls to family members, close friends, or a funeral home. In some cases, a professional writer may be hired to assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charities or organizations that donations can be made to in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, depending on the publication and the amount of information available. Generally, they range from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?
