Obituary Preview: Our beloved Wife, Sister, Mother, Grandmother and Friend
Constance Rosan Carter Russell, 80, was born on June 29, 1943, in Dearborn, Michigan to Walter and Lilian Carter. In her early 20’s she moved to Big Rapids where she met Raymond Russell, the love of her life. They were married on September 18, 1965. They moved to Bear Lake, Michigan in April of 1972 to be closer to Ray’s parents. In their TV business, she worked with Ray and kept everything organized. She was a great help and a great companion.
Connie was known for her loving and giving spirit. Ahe had such a loving, kind, and warm voice. She was very passionate about her family and was so grateful to be visited by them. She loved to feed everyone and made sure she had enough for all to eat. She was an avid sewer/quilter and loved crafts of all kinds. She made homemade quilts for her family and friends, as well as Clothes and accessories. In addition, she enjoyed working outside barefoot in her garden and feeling the sunshine. Her family was amazed how she could win at any card game. She loved baking with her grandkids and buying them lots of gifts. As hard as she tried to hide those gifts and her stash of candy, her children and grandkids would always find them. She loved anything Disney. She looked forward to garage sales, antiquing, and collecting with her friends. Connie and Ray loved to be together, especially when traveling, which they did often.
On March 5, 2015, Connie suffered from a massive stroke that rendered her mostly paralyzed and caused her to lose her ability to speak well. With all the prayers from friends and family, her determination, and especially with the help from her God, Jehovah, she was able to return home where she was cared for and loved. She still enjoyed her family’s visits, watching movies, and playing cards, but her limited abilities prevented her from being able to participate in all her previously enjoyed hobbies. What gave her great comfort was watching all the videos and broadcasts on JW.org daily. On March 31, 2024, she contracted pneumonia and passed away in Traverse City on April 12th at 1:51 a.m. She was surrounded by her family.
Her passing left a huge hole for those who knew her and were loved by her. They look forward to a time when they can hug her again, when she will soon be reunited with all of them, thanks to Jehovah’s promise of resurrection to a new, restored world, something she truly believed is close at hand.

Roy King - March 29, 1971 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Benzonia)
Obituary Preview: Roy R. King of Manistee, Michigan passed away April 11, 2024, at the age of 53. Roy was born March 29, 1971 in Chicago, IL, and grew up in Park Forest, IL. Survivors include his children Morgan King (Matt Sadowski), Kaylee King (Jack Kint), Joey King (Victoria Englert), and Abby King (Joe DeSpain); his mother and stepfather, Beverly and John Olson; his father, John King; his sister Kim (Ray) Victoria; his stepsister and step niece Amy (Rodney) Smith and Justine (Marshall) Wood; his aunts, Nancy Farris and Wendy Schweinfurth; his cousins Rob Green, Laura Green, Elise (Charlie), Tucker and Gabriel Carlson; and precious Apollo the cat, now with Kaylee and Jack.
Roy was the Executive Director of the former Best Drug Rehabilitation center in Manistee, Michigan. Before moving to Manistee, past jobs included mechanic, over-the-road truck driver, tow truck driver and sales. While a mechanic, Roy would challenge the owner to a race: to add amounts for a bill, the owner would use a calculator while Roy did the addition in his head. Roy never lost.
During his time at B.D.R., Roy helped save thousands of lives. His phone was never off, no matter what time of day or night. His compassion and dedication to helping people with addiction was incredible. The position of Executive Director kept Roy busy, but he still used his mechanical skills to personally keep the immense building running. When the COVID-19 pandemic shut B.D.R. down, Roy decided to use his hobby of rehabbing homes to start a new business. With DDIY (Don’t Do It Yourself), Roy worked on improving homes while keeping the integrity of each home’s history. He always said, if you want replacement windows, hire someone else. If there was something he did not know, he would spend hours researching how to do it. The saying, “I have enough tools,” said no one ever, seemed to be his mantra. Roy also managed and rehabbed an Airbnb property on First Street in Manistee. He and the owners were close friends and he enjoyed his work with them, still helping people in different ways. Roy had wonderful, supportive neighbors who he was very close to. The tremendous outpouring of love from friends, neighbors, clients, and the many people he helped shows how much Roy will be missed.  https://gofund.me/8cb56a8d Arrangements by Jowett Family Funeral Home of Benzonia, Mi.  https://gofund.me/8cb56a8d

Ruth Goff - April 13, 1928 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Benzonia)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Elizabeth (MacLaren) Goff Born April 13, 1928 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the daughter of Arthur Robert MacLaren and Cecile Elizabeth (Rockwell) MacLaren. When asked as a small child whose little girl she was, Ruth proudly replied, “I’m Daddy’s little girl and Mother’s precious daughter.” She was the first girl born to her parents, after the birth of two older brothers: Arthur Robert MacLaren, Jr. and Donald Roy MacLaren. The family moved to Lakewood, Ohio in 1929 where Ruth’s sister, Jean, was born. Subsequently they moved to Berea, Ohio when Ruth was 2 years old. Growing up, Ruth lived in Berea, Ohio where many happy memories were made. At the time, Berea was an ideal place for a child to grow up—nearby fields to play in, an abandoned orchard in which to climb trees, daffodils and other flowers to pick for making May baskets, a large old barn to explore, a chicken-coop for a clubhouse and the freedom to enjoy all the amenities of a small town in the 1930s and 40s. Berea was the home of Baldwin Wallace College, and the campus became a playground and roller skating area for the MacLaren children who also enjoyed the ice cream socials, free for the asking, and a college marching band which practiced directly across the street from the MacLaren home, and a football field located behind the house where high school football games were held in addition to the
college games held there.
Ruth’s father died suddenly in 1943 and her maternal grandmother died in 1944, after which her mother moved during the summer of 1945 with Ruth and Jean to her childhood home in Ludington, Michigan. World War II was ongoing and both of Ruth’s brothers were in the Merchant Marines. Ruth completed high school in Ludington and entered Western Michigan University (then Western Michigan State Teachers College) in Kalamazoo. She graduated with a BS degree and began a year Internship at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and received accreditation as a Medical Technologist, ASCP. Having met her future husband, John Wesley Goff, in her senior year at Western, they were married on September 8, 1951. They became the parents of four daughters: Elizabeth, Martha, Diane, and Linda. Ruth worked at her profession full time for the first year and a half of their marriage and then part time during their daughters’ childhoods and until retirement. During the years of her daughters’ early school days, Ruth was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest daughter, Linda, was nearly 4 years old and Ruth resumed her profession as a Medical Technologist working first part time in a private clinical laboratory and later at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. In 1983, Ruth and John were searching for a place to retire in northern Michigan, having vacationed there since 1952. They happened onto an old farmhouse near Frankfort and were immediately drawn to it and to the prospect of working together to rehabilitate the house and enjoy the nearly 45 acres which surrounded it. They moved permanently into the home they had created in 1996. Ruth became very interested in gardening and completed the Michigan State University Master Gardener Program, and subsequently created extensive and beautiful flower gardens around the country home. Ruth was a lifelong Episcopalian, having been christened in the Episcopal Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at the age of 2 months. When the family moved to Berea in 1930, they became members of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church. When the family moved to Ludington, they became members of Grace Episcopal Church, and it was there that Ruth married John in September of 1951. Ruth became a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Kalamazoo during her college days. During the years she and John lived in Kalamazoo and later in Portage, she served on the Altar Guild at St. Luke’s and after their move to Frankfort she became a member of St. Philip’s in Beulah and was also a member of the Altar
Guild there. In addition, Ruth was a member of the Frankfort Periwinkle Garden Club, P.E.O. Chapter BJ, the League of Women Voters, and a past member of the AAUW of Kalamazoo.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, and her sister. She is survived by her husband, John, of 73 years, her four daughters, Elizabeth Ann Johnston of Holland, MI; Martha W. Travers of Manchester, MI; Diane Alice McClean of Clinton, WA; and Linda Kathryn Goff-Blanchard of Minneapolis, MN. Ruth is survived by thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Beulah, Michigan on April 22, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., followed by internment in the Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington, MI on April 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by Jowett Family Funeral Home of Benzonia.

Judy Lou Mead - December 14, 1939 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Benzonia)
Obituary Preview: Judy Lou Mead, of Honor, passed away Friday, April 5, 2024, at the age of 84. She was a mom, loving, devoted, hardworking woman who put God and family above all else. Judy and Keith’s life together started with a chance encounter and a commitment to marriage after just three weeks. They celebrated over 61 years of marriage. They spent a lifetime of love together, raising a family and making all decisions jointly. They never went to bed without saying “I Love You!”
They raised their four children with love, patience, discipline, and humility. Judy created the foundation upon which a thriving family can be built. Family time spent together often involved the outdoors. A lot of time was spent camping, fishing, and deer hunting.
Whatever she did, she was all in! Judy was involved in Cub Scouts when the boys were young, taught ceramics, had an extensive vegetable garden and canned (some years 400 quarts), flower gardening, seed harvesting, and cake decorating. In a word, Judy was curious, and her inquisitiveness and keen intellect drove all her pursuits. Her passion was being a self-taught artist known for her drawings and paintings. She often gifted to other people. She would utilize anything to paint on such as canvas, barn wood, rocks, gourds, tree mushrooms. Judy passed on her talent and love of art onto her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent countless hours teaching them art, playing cards and laughing. Her playfulness and devotion were unmatched.
She spent 20 years as a waitress, not so much as a job, but an opportunity to meet and interact with a variety of people. Many patrons would wait for a table in her section to become available. She never met a stranger and will always be remembered for her generous spirit, kindness to all and her love for family. She always found a way to encourage and inspire others.
Judy will be greatly missed by all. We were blessed to have such a loving soul in our lives for as long as we did and are better people for knowing and loving her.

Albert "Al" Brown - April 17, 1952 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Benzonia)
Obituary Preview: Albert William Brown left this world holding his wife’s hand on April 4, 2024. He was born April 17, 1952, to Evelyn and William Brown in Sturgis MI. Al developed a strong work ethic on the family farm in Copemish, MI. From an early age, he knew that he had a lot to share with the world, which led him to pursue a teaching degree at Jackson Community College and later Central Michigan University. Although he never formally used his degree, he spent his life learning from the smartest people in the room and took every opportunity to share his abundance of knowledge with the people closest to him.
AL was a businessman. Where others saw challenge, he saw opportunity. He was most proud of the success he had owning the snowmobile shop which he owned and ran with his brothers which became the number one dealership in the state and was ranked top four in the country. He always had larger than life dreams and ideas, which led him to starting Al’s Aggregate, B&B Development, and South Street Development. Al credited a lot of his success to his brother and long-term business partner Scott.
Al’s favorite things to talk about were politics, religion, and money, which he did almost daily with his friends at the “coffee shop” in Stapletons. He cherished the advice and friendship he got over the years starting each day there. Al was an advocate for his community, whether it was plowing snow, lending out his equipment, or maintaining the skating rink in Benzonia. He was more than willing to use his time and resources to help the community.
In his fifties he met the love of his life, Terri, and with her came family. He knew the joys and sorrows of unconditional love and expressed the peace he had in a life well lived.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Carol Chandler.
He is survived by his siblings Diane (Frank Weiland) McClure, Eric (Betsy Kuipers) Brown, Mark (Donna) Brown, Chris (Tony) Ruskowski and Scott (Melissa) Brown. To carry on Al’s love and memory are his wife of 25 years Terri Cobb, daughters Helena (Charlie) Brozofsky, Trinidi Whiteford, and Erin (Rich) Stickley. Grandchildren, Tevihn (Sami) Whiteford, Nevi Smith, Aydin (Hannah) Vos, Fallon Smith, Syldee and Hazel Brozofsky, Loretta and Josephine Stickley. Great Grands, Atticus and Athena Whiteford, and Cayson and Copelynn Vos.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday April 9th at 11:00am with a visitation one hour prior at Jowett Family Funeral Home of Benzonia, Mi. A Burial will be at Benzonia Township Cemetery at a later date.

Robert Lee Istnick - November 20, 1934 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Benzonia)
Obituary Preview: Robert L. Istnick: Of Frankfort, died suddenly on March 27, 2024. He was 89 years old. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on November 20, 1934, and spent his "growing up" years in East Palestine, Ohio and he remained in contact with childhood friends throughout his life. He was a BUCKEYE to the core!
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Virginia Fuller Istnick, known as Ginny. They met as students at their alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan University. (He also completed graduate work at the University of New Mexico and the University of Toledo). As a couple they traveled widely, both domestically and internationally. They were also "legend" in their entertaining and to be included in a dinner party or any social affair was a great treat. They worked perfectly as a team and were wonderful hosts. Bob was always known for his sharp and quick wit. He could take an ordinary incident (usually of his own) and turn it into a hilarious story. He was a successful businessperson and retired as a Partner/Manager with Hewitt Associates. When he joined the firm, it had fewer than 100 employees. It now has over 30,000 employees worldwide. Bob often said: "I made two very wise decisions in my life... asking Ginny to marry me and deciding to join Hewitt Associates!"
He served his country as an officer in the USAF on active duty for three years followed by reserve duty. He retired as a Captain.
He was a person of many dimensions. He learned early in life to "pay your community rent" through volunteerism. His parents were community leaders and instilled this in him for service in his church and community. He served as the Church Council President for the Frankfort United Methodist Church. He also served on local boards including the Michigan Legacy Art Park and the Crystal Lake Association (now the Crystal Lake Watershed Association). When he joined the CLA board he stated his goal was to see the two major lake associations become ONE and was proud that it happened during his tenure. He was a member of Rotary International and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. He served as president of the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff club where they were residents of Lake Bluff for over thirty years.
While there he and Ginny served as co-chairs of the centennial celebration for that community. He was also an officer and founder of the Friends of the Lake Bluff Library, a church council member, and was the building chairperson for the Lake Bluff Gazebo, which is the symbol of that community and was the citizens’ gift to the community for the Nation's Bicentennial in 1976. He also served for many years as a member of the Village Architectural Review Board... the only non-architect on the board. His Rotary activity extended to the local community when he and Ginny made their home on Crystal Lake their permanent residence. He was a member of the Frankfort Rotary Club and served as general chairperson for the District Conference. He later organized and served as Charter President of the Benzie Sunrise Rotary Club. He also organized and served as Charter President of the Sunrise Rotary Foundation.
He and Ginny were patrons of the arts. They were long time subscribers to and supporters of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Chicago Orchestra, and the Art Institute of Chicago as well as locally at Interlochen and the Oliver Arts Center. He was a former member of Exmoor CC while a resident in Lake Bluff. At death he was an active member of the Union League Club of Chicago. He referred to it as his home away from home. He was a charter member of the Kingsley Club and a longtime member of Crystal Downs County Club. He was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega, The Crystal Lake Yacht Club, and the Congregational Summer Assembly.
His hobbies and interests were many. He loved to play bridge, contract and duplicate. He was a certified master gardener, a gourmet cook, a masterful interior designer/decorator (his second career), a golfer (lousy) and, alpine skier (GOOD). He and Ginny were Mountain Hosts at Crystal Mountain for 25 years. He loved classical music and enjoyed conducting...he had a long baton and short baton which he used depending on the length of his program.
After retirement he became interested in genealogy and was a Son of the American Revolution (S.A.R.) with two compatriots who served in the Revolutionary War. He was also proud of his Slovenian heritage. He visited relatives there and the family homestead often. He also hosted several family reunions at their home on Crystal Lake including relatives from Slovenia. Every Winter Olympic he would boast of one of his "cousins" winning a medal for the homeland because we are all related.
Besides his wife Ginny, his children, Robert Fuller Istnick and Jennifer Istnick Richards, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren survive him. Also, a brother, Jack Istnick of Tulsa, OK and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial was private. Memorial service will be Friday June 21st at 10:00 am at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Beulah.
Memorial tributes may be made to the Benzie Sunrise Rotary Foundation, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Fuller-Istnick Family Endowed Scholarship at Ohio Wesleyan University, or a charity of choice. Arrangements by Jowett Family Funeral Home.

Denis George Cannaert - March 03, 1936 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Benzonia)
Obituary Preview: Denis was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 3, 1936, to father, Charles, and mother, Jennie (Hayden) Cannaert, who passed away on March 24, 2024. Denis graduated from Farmington High School in 1954 and received a BS from Hillsdale College in 1958. He built his house in Hartland, Michigan, in 1966, where he lived until moving to Frankfort, Michigan.
Denis married Eileen (Genei) in 1959, and they have four children: Michael, spouse Sheila, and children Leah, Ethan, and Collin; Robert, spouse Michele and son Christopher; great-grandson Andrew; Cynthia, spouse Tracy Thomas: Steven, spouse Stephanie and daughter Olivia; Sister Maryann, spouse Grant, daughter Annmarie.
During their 64 years of marriage, Denis was always there for Eileen. He encouraged her to pursue her interests and activities as a volunteer and teacher. As the father of four children, Michael, Robert, Cynthia, and Steven, he was an engaging dad who loved taking the family on summer vacations all over the US in his home-designed VW Bus camper and later Ford van. Denis taught at Huron Valley Schools for thirty years. He strongly advocated for student's reading proficiency and worked to provide specialized reading education for all students. He was also involved with year-round, multi-grade, and other innovative educational programs. Denis believed every opportunity in life was a learning moment. Denis was an avid musician and lover of all things musical. He played the clarinet, saxophone, flute, and other woodwind instruments. He sang in a community barbershop quartet and church choir. He enjoyed serenading family and friends with his musical talents. Denis firmly believed in God and would say that God loved and created diversity. He was involved in church activities for much of his life and embraced spirituality in more non-institutional ways later in life. He would always lead the family in grace at the beginning of meals and taught us to be grateful for what has been provided.
Denis also built a home in Frankfort, on the dunes of Lake Michigan shoreline, where he lived during his retirement years as neighbors with the "Lakewood Group," who were former teachers, their families, and friends. There were many group gatherings throughout the year, but families would come up north, especially on the 4th of July. Family members would choose a theme, build the float, and then march in the Frankfort Parade as the "Lakewood Group." There was always a picnic with lots of food, after which the children could fish for prizes off the deck. Denis cooked the best slow-cooked Baked Beans, which became a tradition at many celebrations. He was the ultimate grandpa, known as "Bumpa" by all the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the family. He hosted "Bumpa Land Bear Camp" as a counselor, director, and guide. The children always called Lake Michigan "Bumpa's Lake," which is known by all of the family now. Denis loved children, dogs, and animals. He was a real people person who initiated conversations and made new friends everywhere he went. He was the king of one-liners! He was always full of wittiness, great stories, and self-deprecating humor. He was an excellent and patient listener and gave the best life advice.
Denis was a carpenter who enjoyed designing and building. In addition to constructing and working on his two houses, he built furniture and many items for the family, like a beautiful cradle that is now part of the family heirlooms. Denis embraced his Belgian and Polish (Austrian Hungarian) heritage and made Lukken Waffers for Christmas and special occasions. The stories about the Cannaert family tree and their journey to America fostered our family pride and appreciation of our heritage. He took us to the Detroit Institute of Arts and showed us the French Chapel, where Grandpa (Charles Cannaert) worked as an apprentice bricklayer.
Contributions may be directed to Munson Healthcare Hospice. Arrangements by Jowett Family Funeral Home of Benzonia, Mi.
