Wayne Michael McCaughey - July 28, 1939 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Winchester)
Obituary Preview: Wayne Michael McCaughey died April 28, 2024 at his residence. He was born July 28, 1939 in Torrington, CT. He was the son of Anne McCaughey and the stepson and son of Edward McCaughey, and John Gollsneider, all deceased.
He spent his very early years in Torrington and in 1947 moved with his family to a farm in Storrs, CT. He attended Windham High School in Willimantic, CT, graduating in 1957 with honors. Most of his next five years were spent in the Army. He served first with 101st Airborne Division, then as an instructor and trainer for recruits at Ft Jackson, SC. This led to his next assignment in 1960 as a trainer and advisor to the South Vietnam Army during the early days of that war. After being wounded in Vietnam, his last assignment was in Germany where his unit became involved in the Berlin Wall crisis. His decorations include the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal as well as a number of others.
In 1962, he entered the nearby University of Connecticut (UCONN) and graduated with honors in 1966. This was followed by a UCONN Master’s Degree in Economics in 1967. He was most proud of UCONN’S 16 national championships in women’s and men’s basketball. It was during this time that he married Bette Eaton and took her two children, Brenda Eaton Miller and Kimberly Eaton, as his own. They then went on to have two more children, Sheila McCaughey and Bruce McCaughey. In 1974, Wayne and Bette were divorced and Wayne continued raising all the children.
Wayne went to work in 1967 for the Bureau of Census and retired from there in 1991. For many years he was Chief of the Special Projects Branch in Industry Division and supervised such important surveys as Research and Development, Plant Capacity Utilization and Pollution Abatement Expenditures. His last four years with Census were on assignment in Saudi Arabia where he taught the Saudis on the processing of their import-export data. In August 1990, he was in Saudi when Iraq invaded Kuwait and was also there when the Scud missiles attacks hit Riyadh in early 1991. The first missiles exploded just above their villa.
Just prior to deploying to Saudi Arabia, Wayne married Judith Utech Marck on February 21, 1987 and they spent the early years of their wonderful marriage in Saudi Arabia. Judy worked as a kindergarten teacher at the American School in Riyadh. The McCaugheys decided to stay in Saudi during the Gulf War and brought home many souvenirs including fragments of scud and patriot missiles.
Judy brought two more children, Paul Marck and Debbie Jaeger, to their extended family, which now totals six children, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In addition, Wayne has a brother, John and sister, Sandra Conlon.
Following retirement Wayne became a consultant and expert on international trade. He travelled on behalf of the IMF, IDB and other international organizations to many developing and former communist countries to advise them on their statistical programs. He always thought it was amazing that a simple country boy like him got to visit over 90 countries and all 50 US states for business and pleasure.
In fact, Wayne felt his whole life was one of amazement. He survived three wars, cancer, stroke and terrible accidents. He had an awesome wife and family, all which distinguished themselves. As a long-distance runner, he won over 100 awards. He was able to contribute to the statistical processing and data of the world. By the grace of Lord Jesus, he lived 84 years. He enjoyed his last years at the Village of Orchard Village especially writing, reading, playing his guitar and singing with various groups. Wayne was the organizer and leader of the Early Vietnam Veterans, a group dedicated to preserving the history and benefits of those veterans who served in Vietnam from 1950 to 1964. He will miss his family and friends but looks forward to all of us being together in the hereafter. In 2007, he retired for good to the Village at Orchard Ridge.
Funeral services will be as Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 1:30 pm. Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Contributions in his name can be made to the Winchester Benevolent Endowment Fund at The Village at Orchard Ridge, 400 Clocktower Ridge Drive, Winchester, VA 22603.
