Tim was a very smart worker and would never let go of a problem until he solved it. His tenacity was evident even as a young kid. Rob relates the following memory about riding bikes when Tim was about 7 years old. The bikes were 24-inch, 2-wheelers. Rob had a growth spurt and got a 36 incher, which was much faster. The first time they rode together, Rob got way out in front and looked back for his little bro, and there he was way back, bright red, gritting his teeth and huffing and puffing trying to keep up. Tim outgrew Rob to become a strong 6’ 2” member of the North Cape Yacht Club. Memory from Kris McCullough:
Tim was also known for his quirky sense of humor. When he heard that his brother-in-law, Skip, had fallen from a broken ladder while working on his sailboat in winter storage at North Cape, Tim immediately grabbed a spray can of paint and drew an outline of a body on the concrete at the base of the broken ladder and put crime scene tape around it.

Helga M. Brosnan - April 11, 1923 - December 06, 2023

Departed: 12/06/2023 (Punta Gorda)
Obituary Preview: Born in Amberg, Germany, Helga arrived in New York City as a toddler. She embraced city life and could be found roller skating, eating in automats and taking in new found friends. When her parents divorced, she became the main caregiver for her dear and physically challenged sister. Helga made every effort to share with her sister the wonders that she discovered beyond their doors.
When she serendipitously met her Joey at a party one night it was a match that lasted through 75 years of marriage. Together they raised their five children in seven states while serving our country and having plenty of adventures. While Helga didn’t serve directly, keeping the home fires burning and keeping the kids on the straight and narrow certainly can be appreciated.
In retirement Helga and Joe built a house in Port Charlotte and became snowbirds splitting their time between Florida and Cape Cod. Helga loved having parties with her neighbors and meeting new friends from England and other parts of our country. She also loved traveling to Colorado, Virginia, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to see her children and grandchildren.
After living for 100 years Helga was preceded in death by many who were very dear to her. Most notably her beloved husband, Joseph Brosnan, her father Julius Biennek, her mother Anna Ross Biennek Meister and her sister Florence Biennek.
She leaves behind her five children: Joann Brosnan, Daniel Brosnan (Betsey), Wendie Payne (Beverly), Jeanne Gardner (Bruce) and Deborah Brosnan. Seven grandchildren: Eric Brosnan (Celeste), Erin Parker (Lou B), Christine Bouren (Danny), Brian Cook, Joshua Cook, Daniel Brosnan and Jack Brosnan (Kelsey). As well as two step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild plus one more on his way.
Hers was a life well lived.
Funeral service and burial will be at Sarasota National Cemetery, December 18, 2023 at 1:00 PM. Family and friends are welcome.
Those wishing to honor Helga’s memory please consider donations to Arbor Day Foundation (arborday.org) because growing things gave her much joy or Tidewell Hospice (tidewellhospice.org) who made her last few days comfortable.

Robert Speck - July 24, 1931 - November 27, 2023

Departed: 11/27/2023 (Punta Gorda)
Obituary Preview: Robert Speck, 92, of Punta Gorda passed away at home with his daughter on Monday, November 27, 2023. A native of Wisconsin, born to Carl and Erna Speck, he never lost his lifelong love of the Packers regardless of where he lived. He graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and was the first college graduate in his family.
An electrical engineer in the photometric laboratories of Westinghouse in Cleveland, OH and later lab manager at Hubbell Lighting in Christiansburg, VA, Bob was a lifetime member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America having served on the national testing procedures committee. As an expert problem solver, he worked on many high profile and challenging illumination projects including the now defunct Superdome and Three Rivers Stadium, the extant Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and many others. He often said he ‘helped put a man on the moon!’ Indeed this is his proudest and one of the most challenging projects--the Launch Area Illumination System (LAIS) for the Apollo Project in case they had to go to a night launch from Cape Kennedy for the moonshot. The lighting solution needed to be especially robust to service the high heat and blast pressure at a launch pad and he provided much of the research and development of the 225 custom 6000W Westinghouse searchlights installed at the Cape.
He was blessed with his wife Joy who he married in 1967 and welcomed two daughters in the following years.
He was quite the storyteller. Many who know him have heard his 45 minute history of the Packers narrative. Most notably, he sold beer (underage) at the games when they played at East High School’s City Stadium, long before Lambeau Field was built. At age 80, he entertained a WI family sporting their Packer attire while vacationing at Disney with his well-embellished narration as we waited in line.
He was an amateur radio enthusiast and “Uncle Bob” as he was known by the younger members, was a fixture in the local ham clubs. In his younger years he enjoyed volunteering with ARES/RACES providing support during natural disasters such as providing radio communications at the county’s special needs hurricane shelter or at a local hospital. One of his proudest efforts was providing support bringing the polio vaccine to children in the Cleveland area much to the relief of a generation of mothers and fathers. In his later years, he could often be seen traipsing around the neighborhood with W4MPJ mobile installed on a rollator and in use for the daily Charlotte Amateur Radio Society’s Sunshine Net. His rig was quite the sight. He was a decades long member of the German-American Social Club of Cape Coral where for years he would be seen each day of Oktoberfest taking tickets and greeting guests at the front gate or taking part in the festivities. The man does enjoy a good bratwurst and beer!
He has many colorful stories, too many to detail here. He is preceded in death by his wife Joy and brother Warren; survived by his daughters Judi and Janny (Chris) and grandsons Zachary, Noah and Daniel all of whom he was very proud.
The memorial service will be February 7, 2024 at 1pm at Faith Lutheran Church, Punta Gorda, FL with Pastor Narring officiating followed by internment in the Memorial Garden and light refreshments in the church fellowship hall.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are usually written by family members or close friends of the deceased, although they can also be written by funeral home staff or professional writers. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable achievements, awards, or charitable work.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often limited to 100-200 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms allow you to upload photos, videos, and audio files to create a more personalized tribute. Some funeral homes and newspapers may also offer this option.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

If there are sensitive issues or complicated relationships involved, it's best to approach the situation with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with other family members or a professional writer for guidance.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Online obituaries can be published immediately, while newspaper obituaries may take several days to appear in print.

If you're considering republishing an obituary from another source, be sure to obtain permission from the original author or publication first. You may also need to provide proper attribution and credit.

What is the role of social media in sharing obituaries?
