Mary Ellen Weidner - February 06, 1936 - October 01, 2023

Departed: 10/01/2023 (East Bloomfield)
Obituary Preview: Avon - Mary Ellen Weidner, the matriarch and heart of our family, passed away peacefully in the early-morning hours of a beautiful autumn day, Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023, at the Jewish Home of Rochester. She was 87.
Born Feb. 6, 1936, in Rochester, she was the only child of Freeman and Marion Sprague. She grew up on Kiniry Drive in Irondequoit, a few blocks away from the bakery her maternal grandfather operated on Bay Street in the city. Mary Ellen attended Laurelton-Pardee elementary school in Irondequoit and then Webster schools before going to Rush-Henrietta High School at the request of a neighborhood friend’s mother. She was sending her daughter NeNe there and didn't want her to be alone, so she paid the cost of Mary Ellen's tuition. The two girls made the daily trip to Henrietta together and became lifelong friends.
It was at R-H that Mary Ellen met John Peters; the couple married and went on to have five children. The family lived in Lima during the 1950s before moving to the village of Avon and settling on Genesee Street.
Raising and taking good care of her children was always Mary Ellen's top priority. She made sure her kids were always well-clothed and well-fed. Like her mother and grandfather, Mary Ellen was also an excellent baker as well as a top-notch cook, serving up delicious holiday meals well into her later years.
When all her children were grown, she entered the workforce in the late 1970s, taking a job as a receptionist at a plumbing company in Henrietta. She later worked as a nanny at two Brighton households until her retirement.
Mary Ellen was fond of old-time rock 'n' roll and country music, and was always eager to catch a jamboree when she could. She also caught a few shows at the Rochester War Memorial; Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard and Randy Travis were among the concerts she attended.
More recently, Mary Ellen enjoyed going to the weekly senior lunch in Bloomfield and taking care of her dog, Cody. A dog lover, she was never without a canine companion.
In her later years, Mary Ellen became a devout Christian; she was a true believer in the Bible and Jesus Christ.
She will be deeply missed.
Besides her first husband, Mary Ellen was also predeceased by husband Fred Weidner, as well as Guy Duel, who passed away in October 2022.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherry (Mark) Leroux of Caledonia, and by sons John Peters of Bloomfield, Donald Peters and David Peters of Rochester, and Ken Peters of Victor. She is also survived by three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. In addition, she is survived by lifelong friend NeNe Yates.
A special thank-you goes out to all the nurses, doctors and everyone else who cared for her on the second floor of the Jewish Home.
Per Mary Ellen's wishes, services will be private. Burial will be in Rush Pine Hill Cemetery, where her parents are.
Donations in her name may be made to an animal shelter of one's choice.
Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomfield. Condolences may be offered at www.johnsonkennedy.com.
