Michael Wade Mathis - September 19, 1959 - March 19, 2022

Departed: 03/19/2022 (Wayne)
Obituary Preview: MICHAEL WADE MATHIS, 62, of Lavalette, W.Va. passed away Saturday, March 19, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington. Mike entered this world September 19, 1959, 12 minutes earlier than his twin brother Mark (which he loved to tell).  Mike and Mark were the first twins born in Cabell Huntington Hospital.  In Mike’s last hours, he was surrounded by family and with his twin Mark holding his hand.  Mike grew up in Wayne County, W.Va. and was the 4th out of 7 children of Clarence and Pearl Mathis. In his younger years, he loved being rambunctious with his twin. They played baseball, rode dirt bikes and got into mischief as twins are apt to do. When Pearl needed a break, she would sit them on the stairs in their underwear until they settled down.  Mike moved to Blaine, Ky. with his parents in 1977. His brother fixed him up on a blind date, and  three and a half years later, his single life was behind him. He married his sweetheart Sherry in 1981 and they made their home in Sandy Hook, Ky.  He was employed by East Kentucky Paving (Mountain Enterprise) from 1979 until 2013.  Mike was a diehard Dale Earnhardt and Bengals fan. When his team or “the man” was winning he could be heard screaming his joy all around the neighborhood. He was overjoyed when the Bengals made it to the Super Bowl this year and so hoped to see a win. He loved to fish, play horseshoes, ride 4-wheelers and watch sports (any sports). He loved Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, REO Speedwagon and his nightly talks with brother Brad.
Above all, Mike loved his family. They were his world. He was a momma’s boy and he always  claimed to be her favorite. He adored his brothers and sisters and looked forward to spending time with them and his nieces and nephews. He was caring and giving and would have given  the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He was a good man with a good heart.
He was raised in a United Baptist home and attended church with his family over the years. Mike accepted the Lord as his savior before he passed away and he is now home, safe in the  arms of Jesus, where he will suffer no more. I’m sure he was greeted with shouts of joy by his father Clarence, mother Pearl, and mother-in-law June Sturgill, whom he loved like a mother.
Mike is survived by his 6 siblings, Teresa Mathis of North Carolina, Brad Mathis of Summerville S.C., Laura (Dail) Stollings of Lavalette, Mark (Diane) Mathis of Proctorville, Oh., Jennifer Mathis of Barboursville, W.Va., and Arletta (Jimmy) Markovitz of Bridgeport, Penn.; and a whole host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. He is also survived by his best friend and ex-wife Sherry Mathis, with whom his bond, even in death, will never be broken.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank sisters Jennifer and Laura who both provided  such loving care of Mike over the long months of his illness. They were his companions, caregivers, cheerleaders and they barely left his side. In their care, he felt secure, comfortable, and loved.  Also the family would like to give special thanks to 6th floor nurses of St. Mary’s palliative care for providing such compassionate care to Mike and the family during their stay there.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at Johnson Tiller Funeral with his uncle, Elder Art Mathis officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mathis Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Eugene "Curly" Clay - October 16, 1955 - January 17, 2022

Departed: 01/17/2022 (Wayne)
Obituary Preview: EUGENE “Curly” CLAY, left this world in the early morning of January 17, 2022 at the age of 66. He is the loving husband to Brenda, father to Steve, Ashley & Isiah, Pops to Stevee (aka Boogs or Fuzz) & a new addition, Jacob. Curly is loved and missed beyond measure.
If something were broken – he could fix it; if you needed help – he was the first to lend a hand; if you had questions – he had answers; he knew directions better than a map; he could find a ‘bargain’ at any swap-meat; he never read instructions, because he didn’t need to; if there was a honey hole to fish or a meadow field to hunt – he would find it. If there was a ‘project’ waiting to be done – he finished it before you asked. Isiah sums it up best, “he could do anything.” He is the epitome of everything good in this world and we are lucky to call him ours.
Curly, a proud owner of his ‘attack dog’ (which is a poodle), enjoyed driving mini-car (turbo edition) to chauffeur Boogs countless miles. He also adamantly defended the notion that she is not rotten, she “just feels good.” He could plow snow and operate a grader with the best of them. Each night he shared a ‘goodnight, love you’ and forehead kiss with his wife. He knew a birthday ice-cream cake was expected each year, he never disappointed. He was the best baby swing installer and lawn mower/4-wheeler/stroller ride giver there has ever been. His trips for first earrings, Christmas lights/parade watching, and a Zoo visit are priceless memories. A Christmas full of Minnie’s is hard to top. Domesticating a llama and transporting it home in a pick-up will always seem reasonable.  Zip-ties or duct tape are solutions. He was a project contractor, best advice-giver, explainer of tools, and biggest supporter to Ashley (Bebe). In her eyes, he is the best man to ever walk this planet – an undeniable love. Luckily, Curly provided the rake and shovel as part of the dowry. He also mentored Jamie in home renovation and the biggest fan of his steaks. He looked forward to Eerie and Stonewall trips with Isiah. He had ‘tinkering’ in the garage down to a science. His bow-target seat or tiny chair suited him just fine. He believed ‘stuff’ was always better if it were ‘free or cheap.’ According to Curly, oatmeal cream pies (& any other candy) are fantastic midnight snacks. He would remind you to fill up your gas tank whenever it’s half-empty (especially in the winter) and to call your mom when you get where you’re going. We’ll forever cherish the pocket t-shirt and jeans-wearing fella that was truly one-of-a-kind.
Curly was born October 16, 1955 to the late Ancil & Mary Clay. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Brenda; daughter Ashley Clay (Jamie Vance); one son, Isiah; two grandchildren, Stevee Vance, and Jacob Johnson; one brother, Robert (Teresa) Clay; and his sister Doris (David) Wilson. Those preceding him in death include: a most beloved son, Steve; and three brothers, Roger (Mary), Tony, and Henry.
He retired two years ago from the Department of Highways where he was a heavy equipment operator and had plenty of stories from working with his ‘drones,’ many of which remain dear friends.
Family and friends wanting to honor his memory, celebrate his life are invited to attend a graveside service scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 20th at Elmwood Cemetery with Isiah Clay, Aaron Clay, Timmy Clay, Adam Clay, Jamie Vance, Farren Perry, Mikey Clay, Uncle Wally Marshall, Larry Ferguson, and Marcus Maynard serving as pallbearers.  A procession will leave Johnson-Tiller Funeral Home in Wayne, WV at 12:30 pm on Thursday. Our sincerest gratitude to all who have contacted us during this most difficult and trying time. He was loved.
