Burton Butch Gordon - November 02, 1928 - April 24, 2022

Departed: 04/24/2022 (Overland Park)
Obituary Preview: Burton “Butch” Gordon was born November 2nd, 1928, to Clyde and Juanita Gordon. Clyde and Juanita had two children, Burton and his older sister Betty who preceded him in death.  While he was born in Watonga, Oklahoma, the family soon moved to Salina, Kansas and then on to Manhattan, Kansas, where he attended grade school, high school, and then graduated from Kansas State University.
After graduation, Butch moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he worked in the accounting department for Standard Oil. Then, in 1952, Butch married the love of his life Shirley Wills. Shortly after marrying, the two set off for Wyoming, where Standard Oil transferred Butch. Wyoming was short lived, as the couple headed to New Delhi, India to work for the U.S Foreign Service with their two young children, Mark and Dan, in tow. In 1959, the family moved back to Kansas City where Butch started work for what would become known as the Federal Highway Administration, and a third child, Bill, was born. One short stop in Iowa later and the family moved to Juneau, Alaska. There, Butch and Shirley had a fourth child, a daughter, Karen. 1968, saw another move, as the family headed to Fairfax, Virginia and Butch worked in Washington D.C. In 1972 the family made their final move to Kansas City where he finished his career and retired in 1989. Butch continued to reside in Kansas City until his passing.
Butch had a passion for wood working, fishing, playing pool and bridge. None of these, however, came close to the love Butch had for his family.  Forever an amazing example of grace and kindness, this was never more evident than after Shirley’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s. Shirley lost her battle in 2007. Butch never left her side, caring for her daily and tucking her into bed every night.
Butch leaves behind his four children: Mark Gordon and wife Lucy, Dan Gordon and wife Tina, Bill Gordon and wife Dana, and daughter Karen Cook and husband Dan. Nine grandchildren: Jaime, Scott, Brett, Matthew, Michael, Heather, Shana, Christopher and Alexander. And nine great grandchildren: Jackson, Emma, Ellie, Isabella, Hanna, Zoe, Ben, Ben and Sloane.
Anyone to ever meet Butch always heard of how proud he was of his family.  While we will always miss him, his legacy lives on in his family. He lived a wonderful life filled with love, and his family has peace knowing he is in the hands of his Lord and Savior.

Mark William DeFoor - January 12, 1971 - April 19, 2022

Departed: 04/19/2022 (Overland Park)
Obituary Preview: Mark passed Tuesday, April 19, 2022, surrounded by family; his wife on his right, mother on his left, and three daughters holding onto him. His father, sisters, nieces, and nephews were all at his bedside, wrapping him in love.
His nearly two-year battle with cancer that riddled his body ended peacefully and without pain but devastated his family. A lifelong Kansas City/Overland Park resident, Mark attended Border Star Elementary, Bingham Jr. High, Southwest High, and UMKC, where he earned an MBA. Mark left a loving wife of 30 years, Brandi,  three beautiful daughters; Taylor, Emily, and Carson; his mother, Linda Overbay DeFoor, father, William DeFoor Jr., two sisters, Lori Etheridge and Beth DeFoor Reams, and five nieces and nephews.
Mark was a serial entrepreneur, creating several businesses in the mortgage loan and IT industries. Additionally, he provided opportunities and careers for people he met in his everyday life, positively impacting the lives of many.
Mark was a devout Royals fan. He loved to coach and support his children and friends in many sports, including soccer, volleyball, softball, and basketball (Go Heat!). His coaching led to lifelong relationships with the kids and their families. Mark had an incredible ability to connect with people. A good friend described him as fun yet responsible, with a heart of gold, but would still “shoot you straight without sugar-coating anything.” Friendships for Mark were more about quality over quantity, yet he acquired more friendships than many. Mark loved being a “dog-dog” to Dayton and a “fake uncle” to Hunter. His and Brandi’s home became a second home to many, especially on their infamous “Bubbles Wednesday” filled with music videos, dancing, and all the Mumm.
Most days, you could find Mark spending time with his family and friends. He was always up for a happy hour on a patio, a game of corn-hole, enjoying some KC barbeque, and an especially good bottle of wine (hello, Silver Oak!). Mark was an avid traveler. He loved to have a Guinness in Ireland, a glass of Piña in Napa, a charcuterie in Italy, and above all else, morning margs in Cabo (his favorite place ever). He always impressed upon us to “take the trip, make the memories, and don’t waste a moment.” Those sentiments are now ingrained in all of us. A lesson learned from Mark was one that he showed daily; Do everything you can to be a positive influence on others. A friend of ours shared an old text message sent from Mark when she was going through a trying time. The text included a picture of words that Mark saved in his wallet. He said that she was the first person to see it besides him and went on to say that it had gotten him through rough patches, as well. The words he kept said;
Focus more, drift less.
Don’t do guilt, do want.
Remember this feeling, drive forward. Mark’s Celebration of Life will be Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 1:00 pm, followed by a visitation at 2:00 pm at Life Church Overland Park, 9800 West 135th St., Overland Park, KS.  THE FAMILY ENCOURAGES CASUAL ROYAL ATTIRE

Kathy’s most important roles in life were wife to Rob and mother to their two sons, who played a variety of sports. She will be remembered always for her caring nature and kindness not only to her sons, but whoever came across her path. She was a great listener and encouraged them to grow into capable adults. Her optimism and cheerful humor carried them through the toughest of times.
She worked at Grace Covenant Church as a Mother’s Day Out teacher.  She also served as PTA President and numerous committee chairs at Oak Park Elementary, Indian Woods Middle School and Shawnee Mission South High School throughout both of her children’s school years.
After the nest was empty, Kathy became a processor of new loans for Capital Federal Savings and Loan for 17 years before retiring in 2017. Her best retirement gift was the birth of grandson Owen! She thoroughly delighted in the role of grandma. Kathy was passionate about her impeccably coordinated outfits, shoes and home décor. An avid reader, she also loved traveling, shopping and entertaining. Kathy was a great lover of chocolate and always welcomed her guests with a warm smile, a bowl of M&M’s and a glass of wine

As an enthusiastic fan of the Kansas State Wildcats and the Kansas City Chiefs, she brought fanfare to countless tailgates, providing tableware in team colors. Kathy never met a stranger. At training camp the first year that Joe Montana played for the Chiefs, she eagerly stood in line to get the quarterback’s autograph. She introduced herself and said she lived in Overland Park. When Joe replied that he also lived in Overland Park, Kathy cheerfully exclaimed, “We’re practically neighbors!”
Kathy faced her cancer treatments with great courage and posted positive messages on her Caring Bridge page throughout her illness. Family and friends will strive to honor her memory by living life to the fullest. May her spirit find as much joy in its journey as she found in life.
