Along with raising her family, Ethel was employed at Avis’ Café, Ed’ Café and worked for many years at the Kingsley Nursing Home. She married Elmer Rock on November 11, 1989, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on a farm in the Kingsley area. Elmer retired from farming in 1991 and Ethel and Elmer moved to Kingsley in 2005. Elmer passed away on July 21, 2011.
Ethel was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Kingsley. She was known for her baking. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards and puzzles. Ethel was the last member of a BINGO group that met weekly in Kingsley. Saturday nights were spent watching Lawrence Welk and the Gospel Hour music show. Her favorite activity was playing games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "There is a generation passing away. They worked hard, they took care of family and friends. If there was a problem, they figured out how to deal with it. They fought great wars or were family of the ones who did. They have suffered through the loss of many family and friends as they themselves continued on to the inevitable truth that our time on earth is just a vapor. We all just get so many years. They were tough and resilient. My mom was the epitome of all that. Her early life was hard. She lost a father and a twin brother when she was young. Her first marriage was hard and didn't work out for a multitude of reasons, none of which were her fault as far as I know. She raised 5 kids through all of this. She had a real hard patch when we were young, and her family got her and us through it all. Then she met the right man. The perfect man for her. The most honest and caring man I ever knew, Elmer Rock. It was a great life after that. They took care of each other. They had a blast. Then cancer. First her, then Elmer. They both fought it hard. She lost Elmer, she beat it. She had kids and great grandkids galore to fill her life with joy and she carried on. There are always tough times, but the good times were many. She was always the great host. She could cook, man could she cook. She knew she was blessed to live a long life and to see her kids and grandkids grow. She knew she was blessed with great friends. Her kids, great grandkids and my grandkids loved her. Her friends and family loved her. That says all you need to know. This was my mom and I'm really going to miss her. I'm really going to miss her laugh and I loved making her laugh. So long mom. You were the best. I love you and I will see you down the road." (Don Reimert)
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Don (Jennice) Reimert of Newport News, VA, Alan Reimert of Mammoth Springs, WY, Debra Ray of University Park, IA, Audrey (Dana) Talbert of Washta, IA and Robin (Bruce) Burnham of Kingsley, IA; grandchildren, Jessica Winkley, Melissa Houghtaling, Erica Schlenger, Luke Talbert, Amy Talbert, Shannon Hora, Holly Jorgensen, Jennifer Stubbs, Brittany Miller, Adam Reimert and Nathaniel Byerly; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Kylie, Shelby, Keegan, Addison, Ethan, Brennan, Gabe, Lauryn, Elle, Haylie, Cameron, Josie, Tad, Hannah, Reagan, Asher, Benny, Marin and Gaige; a sister, Grace Reppert of Bethlehem, PA; a brother, James (Stacy) Arthur of Center Valley, PA; stepdaughters Mary (Tom) of Kingsley, IA and Frances Babe of Loveland, CO. Step-grandchildren, Briton Peterson, Becky Peterson, Paul Peterson and Briana Cunningham; Step great-grandchildren, Michael, Raelee, Clara, ShayLynn, Makenzii, Logan, Leighton, Lane, Kohen and Mathias.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; a twin brother, Chet Arthur; a 3 year-old brother, Robert; sisters, Annabelle Dilchard and Alice (Elmer) Rice; brothers-in-law, Elmer Rice, George Kuhns and Ronald Reimert; sister-in-law, Joan Kuhns; and niece, Valerie Cassel.

Robert Brooks Phelps - January 01, 1934 - December 25, 2022

Departed: 12/25/2022 (Kingsley)
Obituary Preview: Robert B. Phelps, 88, of Kingsley, Iowa passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022. Private family services will be held with burial to follow at the Kingsley Cemetery.
Robert Brooks Phelps was born on January 1, 1934, in Kingsley, Iowa to Floyd and Helen (Wylie) Phelps. He was Siouxland’s First New Year’s Baby. Robert joked that January 1st was the worst day for a birthday as everybody has a party that day but it’s not for you. He grew up in Kingsley where he graduated from high school in 1952. Following high school, Robert attended Grinnell College. He was a standout football player. As a nationally ranked javelin thrower, he broke both school and conference records in the process. Many stories were told of this time period. His best javelin mark seemed to grow as he aged.
After graduation he attended one year of law school and graduated from Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. Next, he took a banking job with Banker’s Trust in Des Moines. After hours he helped manage a gym. His focus was on resistance training at a time before it was generally accepted. It became a lifelong hobby. In 1963, Robert came back to Kingsley to reorganize, along with his brother George, the Private Oltmann and Phelps Bank into a State Chartered Bank that later became Kingsley State Bank in 1965. As a boy, he was the bank’s janitor, eventually working his way up to president. He retired in 2019 as Chairman of the Board.
He was very committed to the bank, often boasting that his bank had the best possible employees because he hired them. Additionally, he would say the second a customer walks in the door, you truly have to want to help any way you can, or you shouldn’t be working there. Another of his favorite pastimes was preaching to anybody who would listen to why Kingsley is the best place to live. Kingsley State Bank and it’s branches were rated 5 stars by various Rating Agencies under his watch.
Robert served on the Board of Directors of the Plymouth County Work Activity Center and represented Kingsley-Pierson and Hinton Community School Districts on the Plymouth County Board of Education before it was merged into AREA Education Agency XII. Other community service included both Lion’s Club president/treasurer and Kingsley’s United Methodist Church treasurer for 17 years. But most importantly, Robert’s faith was in the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior.
On June 10, 1961, Robert was united in marriage to Carol Edith Jensen, his college love interest, in Loyal, Wisconsin.
Every morning Robert would wake up with his kids and grandkids on his mind as his first priority. His activities were scheduled around their activities. He fostered these relationships in many ways but mostly through countless notes and letters.
Robert rarely travelled for leisure except for an occasional ski trip. Eventually, he and his cronies built a makeshift “Westside Ski Slope” west of Kingsley with telephone poles and tow rope powered by an old Ford truck on top of the hill on blocks with incision attachments on the tire for the rope. He also enjoyed spending time at Okoboji with family and observing nature in his timber. As an advocate of staying active for health, he was still biking an hour plus per day close to his passing. Outdoors, he used a 3-wheel recumbent bike and a stationary bike for indoors.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Carol E. Phelps of Kingsley, IA; daughter, Alison A. Hoogeveen and her husband Donley of Kingsley, IA; son, Robert W. Phelps of Milwaukee, WI; son, Scott C. Phelps and his wife Laura of Okoboji, IA; grandsons, Colton Phelps of Ankeny, IA, Nick Phelps of Iowa City, IA; granddaughter, Kiana Phelps of Tuscon, AZ; sister, Sally Wells of Troy, MI; sister-in-law, Linda Phelps of Kingsley, IA; brother-in-law, Bob Kratz of Eden Prairie, MN; nieces and nephews, Alex Wells of Park City, UT, David Phelps of Sioux City, IA, Jenny (Kratz) and Dave Autio of Minnetonka, MN, Katy (Kratz) and John Zimmerman of Bloomington, MN and Greg Kratz of Portland, OR.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Janet Kratz; a brother, George Phelps; a granddaughter, Krista Phelps; a nephew, Campbell Wells and a cousin, John Phelps.

Marguerite Loretta Herbold was born on May 3, 1921 in Pierson Iowa to Burt and Frieda (Albers) Petersen. She was one of five children. She spoke fondly of her childhood in Pierson Iowa where she also graduated from High School.
She met the love of her life and forever soul mate, Junior Herbold to whom she married on December 5, 1940. They remained married for 69 years before Junior’s passing on October 10, 2010. They made their home together on a farm near Kingsley Iowa where they raised their five children.
Marguerite enjoyed the simple things in life. She was a long time member of the First Lutheran Church in Kingsley Iowa. The Lord was the center of Marguerite’s everyday life and she never missed a Sunday service. She enjoyed faithfully reading her daily devotions. She was an avid reader from day one; making it difficult for the library ladies to find new books to deliver to her home. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed first Sunday of the month family dinners around the table. Her children and grandkids will remember her for her molasses cookies, crispy baked macaroni and big meals with homemade ice cream and chocolate sauce.
When Marguerite wasn’t busy raising her family, she was working as an elementary lunch lady (for 7 years in Arizona) before returning back to Moville where she loved her time working behind the desk at Dianne’s Dance. She was the biggest supporter at the dance studio, a grandma to many dancers and couldn’t wait for the dance competitions & yearly recitals every spring.
In her last years she enjoyed her phone calls and surprise visits from Mike and Monty, her Friday dinners with Craig, special outings with Dianne and Wednesdays with Scott’s family. She looked forward to her weekly visits with her grandson Maxon, even though she rarely won the games they played together for some reason.
Marguerite was a gift and a treasure and many of us are better to have known her. Left to treasure her memory are her five children; Michael (Evelyn) Herbold of Mission, TX, Dianne (Steve) Riser of Moville, IA, Craig (Linda) Herbold of Sioux City, IA, Monty Herbold (fiancé Stacy) of Mesa, AZ and Scott (Suzanne) Herbold of Lawton, IA; sister-in-law, Gola (Roger “Red”) Bales of Sioux City, IA; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends!
Waiting for her in heaven is her husband, Junior; parents, Burt & Frieda; her three sisters, Caroline Christophersen, Lois Pottorff and Sylvia Betsworth; and her brother, Ervin Petersen.
