Richard J. "Dick" Bayer - March 24, 1937 - October 06, 2023

Departed: 10/06/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Richard “Dick” Bayer was born in Omaha, NE, on March 24th, 1937 – the eldest child of what would grow to become a family of six. From an early age he demonstrated traits of leadership, responsibility, and selflessness that not only served his family well, but would go on to shape his path in life. These same traits were a natural fit for athletics and when paired with his raw talent, saw him become a key contributor to back-to-back undefeated football seasons during his junior and senior years at Creighton Prep. His skill and character did not go unnoticed, and ultimately resulted in a full-ride athletic scholarship to St Ambrose College where he went on to earn a degree in Physics.
After returning to Omaha, Dick quickly set about laying the foundations for what would be a rich and fulfilling life. When in doubt, he tended to default to helping others and spent much of his time working with disadvantaged youth and taking an active role in supporting his church. His focus on faith and community led him down the right path. Not only did it set in motion his eventual career at Creighton Prep, but more importantly it led him to meet the love of his life, Daryl Ann, whom he married in April of 1963.
For half a century, his unwavering dedication to Creighton Prep was nothing short of remarkable, as he became a fixture in both the math department and the sports arena. In addition to teaching Algebra and Geometry, he coached many sports, with particularly notable success in Gymnastics and Soccer. Dick repeatedly put in extra effort to support his students and athletes, often spending time both before and after school tutoring, coaching, and providing rides or support where needed to ensure everyone had the best chance to shine.
Perhaps even more remarkable though was his dedication to his family. Dick and Daryl Ann were married for just short of sixty years, raising 8 children and helping to raise 23 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Every free moment he had was spent with his family. From the day-to-day, to coaching teams, to the cherished yearly mountain camping trips, Dick was never very far from his kids. Even when working on his own car or yard or house projects (like when he built the family home), he would always “welcome” his children to participate, making the project longer for him, but at the same time doing so much to prepare them to be self-sufficient later in life. He definitely was not one to coddle, but family could always count on him to do any amount of work, no matter how arduous, to help support them in realizing their own hopes and dreams.
He was a great man and did many great things, but for those who knew him best, he will simply be remembered as someone you could just sit with and enjoy the day. His unique sense of humor, colorful opinions, and “helpful” suggestions were always just around the corner ready to make you smile. He provided a foundation for many, a support and friend who was always there to help through hard times and to make good times a little more joyous. He was an amazing husband, brother, parent, grandparent, and friend, and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation: Thursday, October 12th, beginning at 6:00 PM with a WAKE SERVICE at 7:00pm at the 72nd St Chapel.
Funeral: Friday, October 13th, at 10:30am at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 6905 Blondo St, Omaha, NE 68104. To view the Funeral Service online, go to: https://heartstreaming.link/Richard-Dick-Bayer

George Dewey Johnson - March 10, 1928 - September 29, 2023

Departed: 09/29/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: George Johnson, 95, passed away peacefully on September 29, surrounded by his family.
The oldest of Fred and Gertrude Johnson's six children, George grew up in Omaha's Benson neighborhood. After attending Creighton Prep and Marquette University, he graduated with a business degree in 1951 from Creighton University. He got his start in business at his father's marking device company, WESSCO. Then he transitioned to medical sales, culminating in the formation of Geomed, Inc., a firm built on George's strong work ethic, relationships and experience. He sold the business at age 80.
In 1952, George married the love of his life, Margaret Toohey of Omaha, and he said it was the best decision he ever made. They celebrated their 71st anniversary in May. His seven children, 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren (and counting!) were his greatest sources of pride, and he delighted in being an integral part of their lives.
George and Margaret showed strength and grace through many hardships, especially the tragic loss of their son, Jay, in 1987. Through it all, George remained strong and never lost his zest for life. He was known for his eternally positive and gregarious personality (he never met a stranger), his kindness, and his passion for sports, whether a participant or spectator. George lettered in baseball, football and basketball in high school. He played in softball, church volleyball and basketball leagues until he was 72. He took up running in his 40s and kept at it until he was nearly 80 and participated in countless road runs. He still worked out at his gym with a trainer until age 94. He was a loyal Creighton men's basketball fan and has held season tickets since 1982. For years, he coached hundreds of youths, including his kids and grandkids, in basketball, little league baseball and softball, teaching fundamentals while instilling positivity and sportsmanship. Last March, George was inducted into the Creighton Prep Sports Hall of Fame.
Leading by example, George and Margaret instilled in their family the value of serving others. He gave many hours to his parish, St. Margaret Mary, and for more than 10 years, George served monthly as an overnight volunteer at the Stephen Center. In 2007, the Johnson family was awarded the Heartland Family Service Salute to Families Community Service Award.
George cherished everything about life. He loved people and getting to know their stories. His impeccable memory for detail was second to none! He especially enjoyed weekly visits to Downs and Gerda's Bakery and, more recently, Olsen's Bake Shop, helping his sons and grandsons with their weekend paper routes, listening to baseball games on the car radio, any home improvement project, traveling the world with Margaret, trips to Minneapolis to visit Julie and Paul, and driving his car up until a few weeks ago, to name a few.
George is survived by his loving wife Margaret; children Matt (Donna), Chris (Colleen), Mary (Dan) Rommelfanger and Rob (Lisa) of Omaha; Paul (Colleen) and Julie (Tom) Shannon of Minneapolis; siblings Richard (Janet) Johnson, Margaret Bowman, Gertrude Fowler and Mary Clare Owen; grandchildren Jennifer (Darin)Taylor, Kate (Nick) Krueger, Leah and Molly (Lewis Cobb) Johnson; Jamie and Lauren Johnson; Maggie (Ben) Gabrek and Gabrielle Johnson; Bridget, Erin and Gavin McQuillan; Patrick, Michael (Katie) and Laura Shannon; Andrew, Christina, Will and Ellie Rommelfanger; George, Jack, Corinne and Fred Johnson; great-grandchildren Cecilia and Charles Taylor, Theo and Henry Krueger, Everett, Ben and Eddie Shannon; Mary Margaret Gabrek; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, beloved son Jay, brother John, brothers-in-law Jack, Ed (Dorothy) and Jerry (Ginny) Toohey, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Toohey and Rita (Lew) Roccaforte and daughter-in-law Kristin.
VISITATION: Wednesday, October 4, 2023, 5 to 7 p.m., St. Margaret Mary Church, 61st & Dodge, followed by a VIGIL SERVICE at 7 p.m. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Thursday, October 5, 2023, 10 a.m., St. Margaret Mary Church. INTERMENT: Calvary Cemetery.

Chris Krambeck - July 12, 1977 - September 28, 2023

Departed: 09/28/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Chris Krambeck, 46, unexpectedly passed away on September 28, 2023 after sudden cardiac arrest. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Janet Krambeck and is survived by his loving wife Jessica, daughter Libby Edmundson, dogs Gracie and Yukon da Floof and cat Mr. Jabberwocky. He is also survived by his twin brother, Curt, and sisters Michelle Burge and Lisa (Mike) Fallon, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, a mother and father-in-law, nieces and nephews and so many friends who will miss his antics, wild ideas, creativity, laugh and most of all his cooking.
Chris was always unconventional and did things his own way. Those from Gretna will remember that in high school, Chris drove a hearse he had fixed up on his own (or alongside Curt, his twin). He also drove a Cadillac limo for a while, and then his grandfather's old conversion van - complete with the curtains, just like the hearse. Not only was he a relatively self-taught mechanic, but he and Curt assembled and de-assembled everything from car engines to computers to TVs and telephones all over their father's living room and yard, so it was no wonder he grew up to work in IT. He has always known how to fix things no one else could. He had a brilliant mind.
He, again alongside Curt, was an Eagle Scout and treasured those years as both a camper and a counselor, and the friendships they made. Chris had extraordinarily long arms, which allowed him to play the trombone and hit notes no one else could (literally) reach. At 6'5, Chris was always going to stand out, but that only seemed to encourage him to grow his hair long and have the first eye- brow ring anyone had ever seen. He wore a purple suit to his senior prom, complete with a top hat - mind you that's while driving a hearse.
Chris was an incredible cook because he was creative, and again unconventional. He could use a flame torch to make creme brulee, or whip up his own sushi, but what he will be the most remembered for by those who had the pleasure of him cooking for them was his meat. He was a master smoker. And he perfected every bacon variation that could be made.
Like his mom, Chris loved the Chicago Bears, and Jessica, his wife and best friend, was an avid Vikings Fan. They enjoyed the NFL, Fantasy Football, big game events and the Huskers and Creighton together. But when most of us think of Chris and Jess, we think of their traveling. Chris and Jess, and often their daughter Libby, spent much of the last 15 years traveling through a luxury travel club and have made close friends from all over the world. Chris loved to travel and meet new people, and he found the perfect companion for that in Jessica.
He was an incredible son who acted as a selfless caregiver, with Jess always by his side, to his parents in their final years. He was a brother who shared in a love of Jimmy Buffet and holidays with his siblings who adored him. He was a loving father to Libby, and he, Libby and Jess enjoyed their pets more than most. Being a big man, Chris had big dogs (again just like his twin) - a fantastic Newfoundland first, and then Yukon Da Floof, a dog worthy of his own social media pages. Even he and Jess's cat is enormous, a 22 pound Maine Coone.
He will leave a tremendous hole in the hearts of those who loved him and thought they had so many more years to travel, laugh, eat and celebrate with him. We'd all ask everyone to take a minute and think of him, play a little Enter Sandman, and reach out to those you love because every so often, a death can be so unexpected it knocks the wind out of an entire family.
Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I've had a good life all they way. He Went to Paris, Jimmy Buffett

Robert C. Padios - December 10, 1938 - September 18, 2023

Departed: 09/18/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Robert Carling Padios, 84, beloved husband, father, uncle, and grandfather.
Preceded in death by parents, Consorcio Padios and Blanche (Betty) Rogers and sister, Madeline Harter. Survived by wife, Lisa Strimple-Padios; sisters Rena Hale and Sandy Rogers; brothers Gerald Padios and Ronald Rogers; children and spouses Victor and Michaela Padios and Alaina Hickman and Ryan Carroll; 10 grandchildren Lila, Sean, Wesley, Oliver, Edith, Vivian, Rose, Thomas, Victor and Iris; many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
If you knew Bob, you know what a wonderful man he was: kind, generous, loving, tough, fiercely loyal, quick-witted, and absolutely one-of-a-kind. He was an unforgettable character, willing to strike up a conversation with anyone about anything at the drop of a hat and endlessly quotable with his deep baritone and thick Philly accent. His exploits in the pool hall were the stuff of legend. It was truly amazing to watch him as he danced around the table pocketing ball after ball with deft touch, grace, and power. He showed us all the indispensable value of hard work and demonstrated every single day what it meant to sacrifice for the ones you love. He will be dearly missed.

Sr. Diane Davidson, RSM - August 28, 1937 - September 18, 2023

Departed: 09/18/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Remembering Sister Diane Davidson, RSM
Sister Diane Davidson was born August 28, 1937, in Independence, Missouri. Her parents were James and Frances Lucille (Thompson) Davidson. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1955, she traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, to enter the Sisters of Mercy.
Sister Diane received her bachelor of science degree in chemistry from College of Saint Mary in Omaha in 1965 and her master’s in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Colorado in 1970. She taught elementary and high school science and math in Joplin, Missouri, and Denver, Colorado, as well as college chemistry in Omaha.
Sister Diane’s former students likely remember her as Sister Mary Kent. She certainly left a strong and favorable impression, considering her name and picture are still on display today at McAuley High School in Joplin and J.K. Mullen Catholic High School in Denver. At McAuley, she was one of the “young sisters,” having taught there in the early 1960s. At J.K. Mullen, where she taught for 23 years (1976-1999), she was “one of Mullen’s best and most-liked teachers.” Although extremely well educated and intelligent, Sister Diane was effective as a teacher because of her sincere interest in her students.
Upon returning to minister in Omaha in 1999, Sister Diane taught college chemistry at College of Saint Mary. She also served on the boards of Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha and St. Anthony’s Hospital in Pocatello, Idaho. In addition, she managed two Mercy properties for 14 years: Mercy Acres in Waterloo, Nebraska, and Dory Lakes in Blackhawk, Colorado. “I set out to fashion my own path toward faithfulness, commitment and service,” Sister Diane once said. “One of the many rewards of religious life is the opportunity to serve the people of God in varied ways.”
In her spare time, Sister Diane enjoyed camping, reading science fiction, and listening to classical and jazz music. She played the piano, violin and trumpet. However, her greatest love was large dogs; particularly her Doberman Pincers she had over the years: Miska, Maggie, Murphy and Merlot. Sister Diane died on September 18, 2023, in Omaha, Nebraska, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be in Omaha. John A. Gentleman Mortuaries is handling the arrangements. Watch for details as they become available here: https://www.johnagentleman.com/obituaries/obituary-listings#2
Preceded in death by parents, James and Frances Davidson.
Survived by brother, Kent (Christine) Davidson; niece, Sara (Jared) Byrd; nephew, Mark (Angela) Davidson; 2 great nephews; dear friend, Sr. Patricia Forret, RSM and her family and her sisters of the Sisters of Mercy.

Sr. Rose A. Schoolcraft, RSM - September 24, 1940 - September 15, 2023

Departed: 09/15/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: September 24, 1940, was a special day for James V. and Rose C. Schoolcraft. Their daughter, Rose Ann, joined her big brothers, Joe and  Bob. Sadly in 1947, Rose's mother died. The family moved to Arkansas sometime after her birth in Kansas City, Kansas; but when asked "where she came from," Rose claimed Arkansas as home.
After high school, Rose attended Creighton University, Omaha. She earned both her Bachelor's in Business Administration and later her Master's. When computers, with all their large and complicated equipment came into use, Rose learned all their ins and outs. Today much of that complication is located in the computer itself on a chip, and she is the one we contacted and depended on when we didn't know what to do with computers and all the other "smart" equipment and gadgets. We contacted often and Rose's response and assistance were always prompt, generous and gracious.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1965, making final profession in 1972. With her strong background in finances, she ministered in the Community Finance Office until 1991. She traveled around the Omaha Province (later the West Midwest Region) fulfilling many financial and IT roles. She was instrumental in the formation of Catholic Health Corporation, later CHI.
From 1991 until 2006, Rose served as a "Technology Specialist," ministering at the Archdiocese of Omaha Catholic Schools Office and Sacred Hearth Elementary as Assistant Administrator/Network Administrator-Technology Specialist. From 2006-2009, Rose found herself at Mercy International Centre, Dublin, Ireland, as Financial Director. The Centre is thee founding house and first ministry of the Sisters of Mercy Community. In Ireland, she fell in love in a new way with Catherine McAuley and the works of Mercy. Returning to Omaha in 2009, Rose became the Omaha Community IT person until 2023.
The she "officially retired" and began the transition to just relaxing and enjoying the community at Immanuel Village Independent Living. As a devoted leader, she kept learning until the end. She lists her talents and skills as: "detail-oriented, efficient and organized, professional with extensive experience in finance and accounting, a strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to make thought-out decisions, computer proficiency, highly responsible, discreet and ethical, resourceful in completion of projects, effective at multi-tasking." She knew herself very well! We knew her as that person both in ministry and daily life, but more so as a talented, caring and special friend.
On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, she became seriously ill and peacefully died on Friday, September 15. She will now celebrate her 83rd birthday, September 24th, in heaven will all the saints. It will be the biggest birthday party she ever had. Have a great time, Rose!! You deserve it. Welcome Home.
Rose is survived by her brothers, Joe and Bob (Connie), seven nieces and nephews, grand nieces an nephews, many friends, colleagues and her Sisters of Mercy. Donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy.

Melvin W. Clark, Jr. - December 08, 1943 - August 07, 2023

Departed: 08/07/2023 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Melvin Wesley Clark Jr. was born in Omaha, Nebraska on December 8, 1943 during a blizzard, as his mom liked to say. He grew up in South Omaha with his sister and three brothers who affectionately refer to him as “Punchy.” He earned this nickname from a hospital nurse when she met his older sister named Judy and she was reminded of the Punch & Judy show. This nickname stuck with him for the rest of his life with all his nieces and nephews as well!
Mel graduated from South High in 1962 and has always loved being a part of planning the South High Reunions. After high school, he did a couple years in college at UNO before joining the Navy as a Hospital Core man during the Vietnam Draft. He eventually graduated from UNO with a Business Degree once the war was over. Mel remained in the Navy until 1992, with his last year of service at Camp Lejeune during the Dessert Storm war.
In 1979, he met the love of his life, Deb, and they married in the spring of 1980. In 1981, they had their first child, Shane and not long after, Meghan arrived in 1982.
His love of travel and his ease with talking with people from all walks of life eventually led him into the insurance business where he worked for the next 40 years.
Throughout his life, Mel loved scouting and camping, and he was thrilled when he was able to start Shane in the Cub Scouts at St. Margaret Mary’s School. Even after Shane became an Eagle Scout in 2000 and went onto be in the Navy himself, Mel continued working with the Boy Scouts for the next 20 years mentoring other boys on their journey to Eagle Scout and serving on the Eagle Board of Review. He also served on the Mid-America Council as camping chairman and district commissioner, volunteered at summer camps, and participated in the Jamborees. Mel loved to take the scouts on all the camping trips and high adventures in places like Pike’s Peak, the boundary waters, and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. One of his proudest achievements during his years with the Boy Scouts was earning the Silver Beaver Award, the highest recognition a local Council can bestow upon a volunteer leader. Anyone who knew Mel well, knew how much he loved his collections. He loved to buy old Colman lanterns and stoves to tinker on and restore. So…many…lanterns. He also loved to collect hats from everywhere he visited, national geographics, coins, scout patches, oh…and did we mention hats?
Mel had a great sense of humor and style. His jokes and choice of socks could bring laughter and joy to anyone around him. He loved to help others and volunteer whenever someone needed a hand.
For years and years…and years… he only asked his kids for one gift…. grandkids. At the young age of 73, he finally got his wish with his granddaughter, Belle (his little shining star), and 2 years later, he gained his best buddy, Eli. Eli and his Grampy were almost inseparable with Eli insisting on spending all his time with Grampy whether it be at his house, the hospital, or even his room at rehab. We are sure Grampy will be looking down on Belle and Eli for years to come, hoping they carry on his sense of style and love of hats and lanterns.
Preceded in death by his parents, Melvin, Sr. and Helen Clark. Survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Debra; children, Shane (Stephanie) Clark and Meghan (Nick) Bochynski; 2 grandchildren, Belle and Eli; siblings, Judy (Grant) Williams, David (Connie) Clark, Douglas (Joyce) Clark and Steven (Becky) Clark; his extended family and many good friends.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Friday, August 11, 2023, 10:00am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with interment Monday at 10:00am in Omaha National Cemetery.
VISITATION with the family begins Thursday, August 10, 2023, after 5:00pm at the 72nd Street Chapel with a WAKE service at 7:00pm.
