Mattie Jo Daniel - August 27, 1940 - December 25, 2023

Departed: 12/25/2023 (Jasper)
Obituary Preview: Mattie Jo Daniel passed on from this world on Christmas morning, 12/25/2023 of at the age of 83. The daughter of hardworking farmers from Celina, TN, Porter Alfred and Velma Ethel Massengille, Mattie Jo grew up knowing the value of hard work. Her days as a child were spent working the farm with her family, but when a guitar-picking farmhand came for a visit, music stole her heart. She convinced him to teach her how to play and went on to play on the radio while singing with two of her sisters. She picked up the piano along the way as well, and many remember her for her beautiful voice and musical talent that she shared for years to come, whether on stage at the local karaoke joint or leading worship services at church on Sunday.
When she was seventeen, a handsome young city boy came home with her brother by the name of Eugene Daniel. She said he looked like “The Fonz” and the rest, they say, is history. Jo and Gene as their friends knew them, eloped in a double wedding with their best friends. Before long, they were blessed with five children, Rebecca Louise who died shortly after birth, and then Vicky, Michael, Gregory and Bryan. Caring for her family was Mattie Jo’s greatest joy. She worked many jobs to ensure her kids were well provided for and still always had a home cooked meal on the table.
Outside with her hands in the dirt on a summer’s day was her favorite place to be. She loved to garden and always had a huge vegetable patch in the back yard. She could make just about anything grow. When the gardening was done, you would find her in her kitchen, canning her crops while singing old country songs from Loretta Lynn and George Jones.
As the years passed, grandchildren filled Jo and Gene’s home and they welcomed them with joyous open arms. Spoiling became their full-time job, and they did it so well. They were such fun grandparents, and a visit to Granny and Papa’s house was sure to be the highlight of the week.
When her husband passed tragically in 2002, Mattie Jo showed the grit everyone always knew was within her and she persevered. She kept showing up for her family, providing for them however she could and always making sure they knew they were loved. She got to see great-grand babies be born and grow up. Let there be no doubt she loved on them just as much as she had their parents.
Though her body and mind failed her toward the end, she remained young at heart. She loved to laugh, dance and run the roads. She enjoyed being with her people but wouldn’t hesitate to give anyone a piece of her mind if they stepped out of line. You might say her sass was the last thing to go.
Mattie Jo Daniel was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, her daughter Rebecca Louise, son Gregory, and her parents. She is survived by her remaining children and their spouses, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mattie Jo loved fiercely, worked diligently, played hard and fought harder. She was a firecracker of a woman, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be sorely missed and never forgotten. A graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery Tullahoma, TN.  Friday, December 29, 2023 @ 1:00 cst Arrangements entrusted to Jasper Memorial Funeral Home, 150 Cornerstone Drive Jasper, TN 37347. 423-942-7777
