Carolyn Alfreda Arnold - October 11, 1944 - March 07, 2024

Departed: 03/07/2024 (Ypsilanti)
Obituary Preview: Carolyn Alfreda Arnold, 79, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024, in Superior Township, Michigan. She was born Carolyn Ervin on October 11, 1944, in Savannah, Georgia, to mother Gussie Mae (Graham) Ervin and father Alfonso Ervin Jr. Throughout her life, Carolyn was a powerful force. In every role she played - mother, wife, friend, intercessor, leader, and entrepreneur - she embraced and embodied a spirit of positivity, generosity, compassion, and fearlessness. Her legacy is defined by her deep love for her family and community, and her unwavering drive to go after and achieve her dreams. In 1954, Carolyn and her family moved from Savannah to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she attended Jones Elementary, Tappan Middle School, and Ann Arbor High School. As a child, she loved to pray and worship the Lord. She led numerous prayer groups over her 79 years and, especially in her last days, found peace, strength, and joy through the Word of God and songs of His love and praise.Church also brought Carolyn and her husband together. One Sunday at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, she saw a tall, young, handsome man walk into the Church and sit down. Without hesitation and powered by an innate knowledge that the two were meant to be, she immediately sat down beside him. That man was Irven Arnold and the two were married in that same Church on August 8, 1964. Over their 59 years of marriage, Carolyn and Irven created a family of three children, Philip, Stephen, and Natasha, and two grandchildren, Stephen Jr. and Chava. Their love extended beyond immediate and extended family, as well. If someone needed a place to stay, the Arnold's home and hearts were open.Carolyn was also a leader and entrepreneur. She always had an idea and found a way to turn the idea into a reality, no matter what obstacles got in her way. Nothing could quench that spirit in her. She worked for a time as a data processor at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital before pursuing her dream and opening Under the Rainbow of Love Daycare in 1997. For nearly 15 years, she tenderly loved and nurtured countless children in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area and loved every minute of it! The children loved Mrs. Carolyn, too, and her legacy lives on in each life she touched. She found success in other professional endeavors, too, including selling fur coats with her dear friend Lidia Rascol and selling jewelry with her sister Marilyn. In May 2001, Carolyn sold the daycare and she and Irven moved to Fresno, California, in search of warmer weather and to spend more time with her sister, Marilyn. While in Fresno, Carolyn and Irven settled in as members of Saints Community Church of God in Christ and Carolyn became very involved as a servant leader and President of the Fresno Chapter of Women’s Aglow Fellowship. During this time, Carolyn also took classes at Fresno City College. She was quick to make friends in her new hometown, which was no surprise. Carolyn was always surrounded by friends. She loved her friends dearly and they loved her back - especially when she served her famously delicious rolls at dinners she hosted in her home!In 2005, Carolyn and Irven lost their firstborn child, Philip, in a tragic motorcycle accident, prompting a desire to ultimately return home to Michigan to be physically closer to more of their extended family. When they made the move back to the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area, Carolyn quickly reconnected with her prayer warrior friends from Bethesda Bible Church and Christian Love Fellowship. She remained active in worship, in family, in community, and in friendship through her passing.Carolyn is survived by her husband, Irven; her children, Stephen and Natasha; her grandchildren, Stephen Jr., and Chava; her siblings, Marilyn (Albert) Wilburn, Kathy Harris, and Edward Harris; as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Philip; and her brother, Ronnie. The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at North Star Palliative Care, St. Croix Hospice, and Vibrant Life Assisted Living. You all made Carolyn’s last days - and our last days with her - a bit easier.

In her spare time, she found joy in any artistic endeavor including stained glass, knitting, sewing, and ceramics.

They took cruises to Alaska, the inland waterways of Europe, the Caribbean, and around the Hawaiian Islands. They took land tours of Ireland, Italy, and England. On the two trips to Ireland, they met many of her father’s family members.
After Robert passed, in 1996, Rosemary moved back to Michigan to be near her family. She enjoyed being able to see her family expand with the birth of her grandchildren and later great-grandchildren. Her favorite moments were always spent surrounded by them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Blakeman; her parents, Denis and Lillian O’Connor; her son, Denis Blakeman; her daughter-in-law, Susan Blakeman; and her siblings, Margaret, Joseph, John, Denis, and Lillian.

Departed: 12/11/2023 (Ypsilanti)
Obituary Preview: Essie Marie (Prince) CarrollTecumseh, MichiganAge 86 Passed away Monday, December 11, 2023. She was born February 5, 1937, to Arthur Prince and Dixie (Crum) Prince in Rowan County, Kentucky. She was the 5th born of 12 siblings. Essie married Grady Carroll on December 6, 1954. He preceded her in death on December 30, 2001. She is survived by five children, Susan (Jack) Gilbee, Cherie Darnell, Jay Warren Carroll, and James Brian (Cindy) Carroll; six grandchildren, David Darnell, Michael Darnell, John Gilbee, Sarah Gilbee, Emily Carroll, and Sydney Carroll; five great grandchildren, Lilly Nielsen, Colt Gilbee, Jack Nielsen, Charli Jo Gilbee, and Parker Darnell. Essie was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Carroll; her parents, Arthur and Dixie Prince; her youngest son, Matthew Calvin Carroll on August 5, 2021; and two granddaughters, Stephanie (daughter of James Brian) and Teresa (daughter of Matthew). Essie was a sweet naïve young lady when she met Grady. She was never taught to drive a car. When challenged by her husband and brother-in-law, Mike, she became brazen and was determined to drive. The car she learned on was a 1956 Imperial Chrysler, which was a very large vehicle. Her family was so proud of her. The Kentucky house she grew up in had no running water, an outhouse, and was heated by coal and wood with a cast iron heat stove in the center of their five-bedroom house. Her mom “Dixie,” cooked on a wood burning stove in their kitchen. That’s where Essie and Grady spent all their vacations with their children. Essie had such a great sense of humor! She had so many stories. One time when she was a little girl, her dad was down over their hill making moonshine. The revenooers (yes that’s a word) came and asked to see Arthur. Essie knew where he was and said, “Sure, I can take you to him.” And she did. There were no consequences that she knew of. They just sat down with her dad. Her son-in-law, Jack Gilbee, was wonderful with her. He would take her for rides in the country, buy her ice cream or Starbucks. They would tease each other mercilessly, and Essie always had a good comeback. While in Tecumseh Place, her son Brian would visit her every week Monday through Friday. He was so patient with her.I hope this gave a little background about the daughter, wife, and mother which we will miss so much. Go “Rest High on the Mountain,” sweet Essie. The family will receive friends at Nie Family Funeral Home – Janowiak Chapel, 320 N. Christopher Scott Clement - November 17, 1972 - December 10, 2023

Departed: 12/10/2023 (Ypsilanti)
Obituary Preview: Christopher Scott Clement, age 51, of Belleville, Michigan died Sunday, December 10, 2023.Chris was born November 17, 1972, to parents Russell Clement and Carol Matthews. Chris was raised in Belleville, Michigan alongside his siblings. After graduating from Belleville High School in 1990, Chris worked in construction for a few years until 1992 when he joined his dad in the insurance business. Chris quickly became a favorite among clients because he always had a smile and was very personable with them.Chris worked in the agency but had to take a temporary leave in 2009 when he developed Goodpasture Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that affects the lungs and kidneys and, as a result, his kidneys failed. He was on dialysis from 2009 until 2013 when he received a transplant. Sadly, in 2016, the transplant failed and he again required daily dialysis treatments. But his health did not stop Chris from living life and finding joy even in the smallest things. He enjoyed car repairs, tech repairs, he even invested in installing solar panels onto his trailer with the help of his oldest son Taylor. He loved cooking and his three children enjoyed taste-testing his creations because Chris only cooked with the best ingredients, and everything was made from scratch. He loved going to the shooting range especially with his friends or the boys when they were younger. He was previously a proud member of the Moose Lodge until he became too sick to hang out there regularly, he was a proud "grandpa" to Aki, his grand dog and he enjoyed spoiling her with food and nicknamed her "Fuzzlebutt."With his mobility issues in the past year or so, he was getting into TV/movies such as Game of Thrones, Star Trek (which he also watched a lot when his daughter Toni was a child before the boys were born), also Star Wars, CSI/NCIS/Law and Order type crime shows, adult animation like South Park and Family Guy, horror movies (like zombie stuff). In August of this year Chris had been planning to rebuild his motorcycle engine himself from an 89cc 3 speed to a 212cc 5 speed. When his friend questioned him because his health at the time was not good, and he was not in the best shape to ride a motorcycle his reply was “Can’t live forever and yes, I do plan on riding at least around the park or field. And I can ride a lot better than can walk lately.” Which was a typical reply from Chris!Remotely, he continued to help run the insurance agency with his business partner and friend, Saundra Hightower, until July 2023. Prior to July, it was Chris who managed all the VOIP phone system, the computer repairs, ordering supplies (because he always found the best product at the best price), and building out software programs for the agency. Just like his dad, Chris loved the insurance business.Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Matthews, and his beloved sons, Taylor Clement and Timothy Clement.Chris is survived by his daughter, Toni Clement; his dad, Russell (Nicole) Clement; his brothers, Steven (Cathy) Clement, Mark (Christine) Clement, and Danny Clement; as well as many nephews, nieces, family, and friends.Service arrangements will be in the near future.
