Mary Brown Duff - January 26, 1921 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Aston)
Obituary Preview: Rev. Dr. Mary A. Brown Duff was born January 26, 1921 in Abingdon Virginia to the late Laury and Martha Walker Brown. She passed away April 5, 2024 at Markley Rehab & Healthcare Center in Norristown PA. She was 103. She was the youngest of eight siblings.
Mary would talk about her brothers and how playful she was growing up. She remembered a Pastor whose favorite song was, "Jesus Loves Me" and it was sung every Sunday. The song would bring tears to the Pastor's eyes. And Mary would poke her brother's and say, "See, he's going to cry". It turns out that became her song as well.
Mary grew up and was educated in the Abingdon Virginia area. She matriculated at Bluefield State University in Bluefield WV, where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.
Mary met and married her late husband, Arthur Duff. From this union Bettye Evangeline Christine Duff Winder was born.  Mary became a stalwart single mother when she and Arthur divorced. She placed Bettye in activities ranging from playing the piano to participating in the local debutante ball. Mary had a profound impact on her daughter Bettye and later her grandchildren, Jamila and Randy II. She set the bar high for them as she was a major influence to them in pursuing higher education. Mary began teaching in Abingdon VA, then migrated to Philadelphia PA. She spent most of her career teaching 9th grade English at Mayer Sulzberger Junior High School. She was an educator within The Philadelphia School District for close to four decades. She was very popular among students and teachers, staff, administrators, and parents. For her no-nonsense attitude she was given the moniker, "Rough, Tough Mary Duff". Of note, in 1972, she was nominated and won State Teacher of The Year>
Mary was granted an honorary doctorate in humanities in May of 1985 from her Alma Mater, Bluefield State University. Upon retirement, Mary furthered her education, earning a Masters in Divinity from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1999. While there, Greek was a particular challenge, but she excelled nonetheless.
Mary had a deep and personal relationship with The Lord that began with her accepting Christ at an early age. She loved God fervently and was a disciple of Jesus Christ.  To that end, she served Him faithfully in various capacities including Director of Christian Education, Deacon, Elder, and Pastor. The churches where she worshipped and gave of her time, talent and treasury were, Wharton-Wesley United Methodist Church, Ardmore United Methodist Church,, United Methodist Church of Bala Cynwyd, and Calvary United Methodist Church in Philadelphia PA.
At 104 years old, she passed away peacefully at Markley Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Norristown PA where caregivers were honored to care for this Centurian resident.
