Stanley M Grossman - January 29, 1930 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Atlantic County)
Obituary Preview: Stanley M. Grossman passed away at 9:45 am on Wednesday April 10, 2024, surrounded by his family. Stanley led a life filled with many blessings and many achievements: Stanley was a family man, businessman, and community leader. 10 days after his birth on January 29, 1930, his mother passed. During his childhood in spite of missing his mother’s love, Stanley made it thru to that summer day in 1946, when his inferior athletic skills paid off while playing volleyball on the Atlantic City beach, when he donked Marsha Raticoff with the ball…a moment which began a long courtship and 63-years of marriage.
Stanley attended Brown University then Harvard Business School. He started out as an executive at Food Fair, only to return home to the family business due to his father’s alleged heart attack. Stanley led Kensington Furniture for nearly 60 years. He and his brother, Buddy, worked as brothers and partners moving the store in 1967 from Kentucky and Atlantic Avenues in Atlantic City to its’ current location on Tilton Road in Northfield. Stanley loved Kensington and its’ many devoted and beloved employees. Stanley considered those who worked at the store a part of his extended work family and was always grateful for how they represented the store. He enjoyed being the face of its’ advertising and in his latter years being the Sleep Doctor.
Stanley loved our community, working for the betterment of both the Jewish community and the community at large. Among his many leadership roles: President of the Jewish Federation, Chairman of the Beth Judah Building Committee, Chairman of the board of AtlantiCare, Chairman of the Miss America Judge’s Committee, and board member of CCA Global. One of his most fun moments was in 1978, when he had the honor of organizing and being master of ceremonies of the Atlantic City Medical Center's benefit concert by Frank Sinatra at Atlantic City’s Convention Hall.
Stanley’s greatest achievement was his marriage to Marsha and the family they created together. Each was lock step in their commitment to one another, the importance of doing things together as a family. While their children were young, there was no excuse acceptable to warrant missing nightly family dinners. From there were family trips, Shabbat dinners, sharing in everyone’s celebrations and hardships. Stanley treated and viewed his children’s spouses as if they were his own. He leaves behind his children, Mark and Anne, Jimmy and Allison, Michael and Siobhan, and Margery and Mark. Stanley and Marsha had 10 grandchildren, all of whom never ceased to amaze them and whom they never stopped showering each with love: Daniel, Noah, Emily, Sarah, Jack, Max, Aaron, Evan, Marlee, and Leo.
At the end, Stanley was blessed to be surrounded by overwhelming love because of who he was his whole life, how he showed up, and the kindness he showed all. Rest in Peace.

Celia Mastel - December 20, 1933 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Atlantic County)
Obituary Preview: We regret to inform you that Celia Bialoblok Mastel passed from this earth on February 23, 2024. She was 90 years old, and passed peacefully in the hospital, surrounded by all the members of her family, both on the phone and in person. She died holding the hands of her grandchildren, Ella and Harrison, and her devoted daughter, Diana.
Celia was born on December 20, 1933, to a pair of tailors from Poland/Ukraine who owned a clothing manufacturing concern in Buenos Aires. During the depression, Celia learned about business and a great deal about how to take care of herself and the importance of being independent. She graduated from college with a masters in Spanish but learned 6 additional languages in her lifetime.
She fell in love and married at the age of 26 to an up-and-coming composer/conductor in the Buenos Aires Symphony. That relationship did not survive the loss of their first child, Diana Ruth, to spinal meningitis at 6 months old. Celia decided to move to the US to start a new life in the United States, moving to New York to live with a cousin and working as an interpreter for Conde Nast. She left that job to teach Spanish at a Catholic school in the Catskills, despite her father's disapproval.
Celia then met and married Harold Mastel, a 5th generation bagel-baker, and a widower with a 5-year-old. Celia and Harold were married in 1967 and in addition to her stepson, Eric, she had twin daughters, Diana and Missy.
Celia spent most of her adult life in Ithaca, NY, raising her family and dedicating herself to the community. She taught Yiddish, ran bingo for the synagogue and spearheaded many of the food-based rituals for the congregation at Temple Beth-El in Ithaca, NY.
After Harold’s passing, Celia became a home health care aide, and spent the next 20 years caring for people first in Ithaca and then in Atlantic County, where she moved after Diana got married in 2004. Despite moving at the age of 71, Celia made many friends in her new community.
Celia loved Rummikub and reading and would regularly finish multiple books a week. Her daughters together could not keep up with her; and cultivated recommendations for new material from anyone and everyone. Her remarkable language skills allowed her to read almost everything in its original language and more than once said that an author had “built sentences like beautiful bridges”.
Celia is survived by her three children, Eric of Savannah, GA, Diana, of Linwood, NJ and Missy and her husband Scott, living in San Francisco CA. She has six beloved grandchildren, Racheal, Rebekah, Josh, Sara, Ella, and Harrison. Because of her, they all write thank you notes.
We owe everything to her amazing strength and love, and she will always be remembered as the matriarch of a family steeped in gratitude and dedication to others.
We would like to offer a special thanks to the community in Ithaca, New York, who somehow heard about her funeral on Monday and showed up in force, graveside and at mincha to honor her and share memories with us. Your love and compassion overwhelmed us, reassured us and confirmed for us that we had indeed “brought Celia home.” Donations may be made to Temple Beth El, of Ithaca, NY and to Magen David Adom (Israeli Ambulance Core) in her memory.

Joseph S Freed - December 04, 1930 - January 07, 2024

Departed: 01/07/2024 (Atlantic County)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Stephen Freed passed away peacefully, on January 7, 2024 at his home, Brandall Estates, with his wife Nancy by his side. Joseph was born on December 4, 1930, in Bronx, New York. He grew up with two loving parents, Ruth and Morris Freed and his older brother Arnold. He loved to play stickball with the neighborhood boys on the block and grew up listening to his brother Arnold play classical music on the piano. As most young men of his time, Joseph was drafted. He served as a proud Marine and was sent to Cherry Point Marine Base in North Carolina. Luckily, when asked who could type, Joseph had been taught by his father, a er. Joseph was assigned to do the ordering of supplies for the soldiers. After his two years of duty, Joseph returned to New York and also became a printer. Joseph met the love of his life, Nancy, when they worked at the same printing company. Working different shifts, she left him candy and her phone number in her desk. He could not believe his luck! They were married for 66 years and everyday Joseph knew how lucky he was to have found Nancy. When they moved to Margate, Joseph continued his work as a er. He was able to purchase his first house where he raised his daughter, Sharon, and son, Jeffrey. As luck would have it, Joseph's neighbor heard of a store in Brigantine that was for sale and the owner taught Joseph how to run the business. Joseph, along with his Mother-in-law, Carley were now the owners of the Brigantine 5 and 10. Carley, Nancy and eventually his children would all have times working alongside Joseph as the family business expanded. Joseph managed the store, working there almost every day for 30 years. He was proud of the store and his ability to care for his family! Joseph was a wonderful husband and father, but he was always at his best when he was playing with his loving grandchildren. First came Joshua, and then Aliya. Grandpa was always the fun one! You could find him getting pretend haircuts and "cheating" at go fish! He made them laugh and sing! Joseph had a wonderful sense of humor and was happy to make his family and friends smile. He knew the importance of family and always shared the love in his heart and we are all the better for it. Friends and family are invited to share in a Graveside service on Monday January 8th at 12 noon at the Rodef Sholom Cemetery, Egg Harbor Township. A livestream will be offered at www.JSGFunerals.com for those unable to attend.

Departed: 11/16/2023 (Atlantic County)
Obituary Preview: Elaine Budnick Kligerman, 90, passed away at her home in Philadelphia on November 16, surrounded by her loving family. Born in 1933 to Jack and Etta (Jaffee) Budnick, she was raised in Pleasantville, NJ, where her father was a real estate broker and developer. Her mother was a homemaker. She married Alan E. Kligerman in 1953, and together they raised their five children in Northfield and Atlantic City, NJ. For the past 45 years, she resided in the Art Museum area of Philadelphia. Elaine lived a long life filled with family and music; her musical legacy is deeply and proudly cherished by all of her children and grandchildren. Elaine Kligerman was an accomplished pianist. While in her teens, she studied piano and music theory at the Mihich School of Music in Atlantic City. After winning the Edgar Stillman Kelley statewide piano competition when she was in high school, Elaine entered Juilliard directly into the second year. She then transferred to the Manhattan School of Music, studied under Dora Zaslavsky, and graduated with a degree in piano performance. For 30 years, while raising her children and commuting from the shore, Elaine was the accompanist for Singing City Choir, Philadelphia's premier avocational chorus. Founded in 1948 in a racially divided Philadelphia, Singing City was intentionally multi-racial and multi-ethnic, following the Fellowship House mission of celebrating human differences and finding common ground. As the accompanist for Singing City, Elaine was conducted by Eugene Ormandy, Arturo Toscanini, Erich Leinsdorf, and Leopold Stokowski. Additionally, Elaine traveled with and accompanied Singing City when it toured the Holy Land in 1974, performing Handel's Messiah both in Israel and at the pyramids in Egypt, under the baton of Zubin Mehta. After retiring from Singing City, Elaine served as adjunct faculty at Temple University, teaching piano for 15 years. Throughout her career, she taught piano and music to generations of young and adult musicians in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. She continued as a student herself, finding experts to coach her on piano technique well into her 80's. For over 70 years, Elaine deeply enjoyed playing chamber music, one of the great loves of her life. She was also a patron of the arts, a benefactor to the Nelly Berman School of Music in Haverford, PA, as well as sponsoring The Elaine Kligerman Piano Recital Series of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Elaine was well-known for being open-hearted and accepting of all people. Her family dinners were legendary. She was a worthy opponent at ping pong. Her knowledge of and taste in classical music and its performers was profound. She was a whiz at bridge, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, and Boggle, all of which she pursued avidly. Elaine adored her five children, (and their spouses!), all of whom survive her: Laurence (Nelya) Kligerman, Andrea (Robert) Solomon, Marta "Cookie" (Ilan Peleg) Rozans, Cynthia (Lawrence) Owen, and David (Joan) Kligerman, as well as her nine grandchildren, Aliya and Rebecca (Solomon), Samuel and Michael (Rozans), Emma and Jackson (Owen) and Miles, William and Julia (Kligerman), She is also survived by her brother, Robert, and by numerous nieces and nephews and by her former husband of 25 years, Alan E. Kligerman, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ. She was predeceased by her older brother, Stanley. Elaine will be dearly missed and her memory cherished.
