Merwyn Elaine Couch - August 17, 1929 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Portsmouth)
Obituary Preview: Merwyn Elaine “Mary Lou” (Thompson) Couch
Portsmouth - Merwyn “Mary Lou” Couch, 94, of Portsmouth NH passed away on April 27, 2024 with her son and close friends by her side. Mary Lou was born August 17, 1929 in her aunt’s home in Haverhill MA, the daughter of Bernice Woodburn and Ralph Thompson. Raised in the rural town of Hampton NH, she attended Hampton schools, graduating from Hampton Academy in 1947. As soon as she graduated from high school, Mary Lou - always the independent woman - moved to Newburyport MA and then, in 1950, to Portsmouth. In the early Portsmouth years she worked at the original Rosa’s Restaurant alongside her best friend Marge. Mary Lou loved the independent life, and always had a wide circle of friends and a very active social life.
It was in Portsmouth that Mary Lou met Cranford Couch, of Athens GA, who was then a sailor in the Naval Submarine Service. For some years, they were close friends but, as time went on, they eventually gave in to their obvious attraction, and married in 1960. For the next several years they moved to various parts of the country - wherever the Navy took them. And it was during the later years of that time when they were gifted with the birth of their son, Calvin . At the end of the 1960s Cran retired from the military and the family settled back in Portsmouth.
Mary Lou had a long and successful career in the retail apparel business. This was area of passion for her, as she really enjoyed both working with the public and helping them to acquire high quality, fine clothing. This was very apparent in her own sense of style: no matter the situation or where she was, Mary Lou made it a point to dress well and look fantastic. She spent years at Porteous, Mitchell and Braun, a well-known department store, where she was particularly adept at selling men’s suits. After retirement from Porteous she took on a second career with Jones New York - again exhibiting her skills at both making the sale and making her clients feel special..
Mary Lou was a social butterfly, always enjoying a good party, where she loved to laugh and dance. She enjoyed the occasional Chardonnay or Bloody Mary and loved a great meal. She loved road trips, as long as a stop or two at a restaurant or bar were involved.
Mary Lou was a great patron of the theatre and passed this love along to her son with trips to Boston and New York for this purpose. A voracious reader she always had a book or two in progress.
Mary Lou was simply a people person. Her family was her greatest treasure, and her friends brought her great joy as well. She was a wonderful mother and had a very close bond with her son throughout her life. She loved children and indulged in her nieces, nephews, grand nieces & nephews and her friends’ children and grandchildren. And know as “Nana Mary Lou” to Kendall and Brooke.
Mary Lou’s life was marked by her fierce independence. Never a complainer she dealt with life as it came and always tried to find the best in everything. She was loyal, kind, and generous.
She is survived by her son Calvin Couch of Portsmouth NH, many nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends. She was predeceased by her husband Cran, her parents, her brother Robert Thompson and sister Joanne Felix, all of her cousins, and many of her lifelong friends.

Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Jane Haught Stevens (Janie), 89, of Evanston, IL died peacefully with her son & daughter by her side on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in York, Maine after a short stay at the hospital.
Janie was born on October 11, 1934, to Catherine & Harold Haught in Indianapolis, IN. She grew up in Indianapolis but traveled with her family to St. Petersburg, Florida for the winter months. She graduated from Shortridge High School in 1952 & attended Wheaton College, in Wheaton, Illinois. After completing her degree in business, she moved to Manhattan and worked for Merrill Lynch. After only nine months she switched directions to work for Young Life. They sent her cross country to Los Angeles! Again, after a short time she moved to Knoxville, TN, still with Young Life, and lived there for four years where she met and married Bob Stevens in 1962. Together they had two children, Cathy (1966) & Rob (1968).
While living in Atlanta and raising her children, Janie, who always wanted to be a nurse, volunteered as a pink lady. She loved it so much that she became a nursing assistant. Finally, she went back to school at Emory University and earned a nursing degree in 1978. When the family moved to Lakeland, Florida later that year, she began her career in public health working for the State of Florida. She even drove the company van with relief workers to south Florida after hurricane Andrew to provide health services for those in need. Janie showed God’s love to the world. She was a woman of faith who was such a bright light. She smiled at everyone...yes EVERYONE! She truly sparkled! She loved to laugh, was so kind and never had a bad thing to say about anybody. Everyone was welcome in her home and her hospitality was beyond compare. She loved God, all people and especially her family, which included her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Rick Gustafson of Evanston, IL, their two children, Steve and Lillian, her son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Jennifer Stevens of Portsmouth, NH, and their two children, Hannah and Jack. She was always so grateful for her life with Bob, the people in her life, and even at the very end surrounded by her children. We will miss her greatly but know that in her words, “She is where she needs to be.”
