Donald Jackson, Sr. - Unknown - February 27, 2022

Departed: 02/27/2022 (Amityville)
Obituary Preview: Obituary
Donnie was born August 5th, 1958 in Huntington, NY to Lillie Jackson and the late Sidney Jackson. He was the only Jackson boy born to them. He joined the United States Army in 1976 at the age of 18, where he was stationed in Germany as a truck driver. Donnie was Honorably Discharged August 1979.
After leaving the military Donnie went and worked at 9 Brothers where he was their first truck driver nicknamed “Action Jackson.” After leaving 9 Brothers Donnie worked alongside his father at Jackson Produce hauling produce and flowers. Donnie loved driving his truck over the road making treks to Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. Known on the road as Witchdoctor or later in his career as Dial Tone. Truck driving is how he was able to meet many of his closest friends, and forged lasting relationships. Donnie could always be found down at “the yard” with the lady of his life “Big Blue,” working on lights and tires and at any given moment you could see Big Blue shining down Sunrise Highway or the Long Island Expressway with his headset in his ear, a coffee in his hand, and the road to his back.
He purchased his first home in Central Islip, NY for him and his boys in 2010. Donnie would earn the nickname of “The Mayor of Willow St.” Whenever a neighbor needed him he would be there anyway he could whether it be with a shovel, potatoes, a generator and extension cord, or a snowblower and ice melt. He knew every neighbor’s name, and would always greet them with a vibrant smile, a heartfelt hello, and warm conversation. Even the kids on the block would flock to him to say hi. In his own home he could be found playing with his dog Comet, washing his car and tending to his lawn and garden. He was well known on the block for his immaculate landscaping, and huge flower pots that lined up his driveway.
Donnie was an avid Knicks fan. If the Knicks were on, he would be found in front of the television with his Knicks blanket yelling at the refs. Basketball was one thing he loved to watch and talk about with his sons, nephews, and sister.
God was first in Donnie’s life being raised in the church from an early age, and giving his life to God. He became a member of Washington Temple C.O.G.I.C in 2012 and was honored with the title of Deacon soon after. He never came to church without his bible, an open heart, and his tambourine, and he could play that tambourine! He loved his church family and his pastor Bishop Madison very much.
Donnie was a family man at heart second only to God. He loved his boys with all his heart, would help them with in any way he could, and would not put anything above them except his grandboys who he would spoil anyway he could. Donnie was notorious for reaching out to family just to call and shoot the breeze, and could always put a smile on their face with one of his stories.
Donnie is predeceased by his Father Sidney Jackson, and his older sisters Gail Kirkham, and Sandra Jackson. Surviving him are his 3 boys Aaron Marques Jackson, Donald (Lil’ Donnie) Jackson Jr., and Dante Jackson, his mother Lillie Pearl Jackson, his younger sister Cynthia Williams (George Williams), and Karen Parsons (Mike Parsons), He is also survived by his 4 grandsons Arlando Neal, Landon Jackson, Ja’Kobe Jackson, and Ja’kai Jackson, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Donnie was dearly loved. His booming energy, bright smile, and outgoing personality will surely be missed by everyone his light touched. Yvonne Pontoon - Unknown - February 19, 2022

Departed: 02/19/2022 (Amityville)
Obituary Preview: Yvonne Pontoon was born on November 29, 1943, in Aiken, South Carolina to the late Arthur Pontoon Sr. and Mamie Simmons Pontoon. She was the ninth of twelve children.
At an early age, Yvonne joined Old Rosemary Missionary Baptist Church. She was educated in the public school system of South Carolina, where she excelled in sports. As she continued to engage in activities that were physical in nature, Yvonne earned the distinction of “Tomboy.” Putting on hold her childhood ambition of becoming a physical education teacher, she relocated to the fun city of New York to pursue a Modeling/Acting career. Early in New York, Yvonne worked in various industries until she followed a life-long passion in Modeling, Acting, and Singing. To prepare herself for success in modeling, Yvonne attended the Ann Prince Studio, school of charm and poise for self- improvement. In 1965 she graduated with a certificate in charm and poise. During that time, Yvonne won first place in the “Miss Valentine Pageant 1965.” One of her most memorable accomplishments was in 1967, when she was selected as one of twelve calendar girls for the 1968 “JET” magazine issue titled “Black is Back.” Yvonne’s modeling portfolio showed her love for being in front of a camera. Her energy, excitement, beauty, and smile were consistently highlighted in all her photos shoots. Yvonne’s success continued as she added to her acting credits appearances on the CBS television show “To Tell the Truth.”
Pursuing another interest, which was put on the back burner also, Yvonne gained certification as a Master International Tarot Reader. In this profession Yvonne traveled nationally and internationally, reading for celebrities, non-celebrities, and other tarot readers. She would advise her clients that she was not a psychic reader, spiritual adviser, nor fortune teller. . .. she was merely skilled at reading Tarot. In 1996, she appeared on “Tomorrow Tonight” television as “Mia”, World Master Tarot Card Reader.
Yvonne, known to many as “Auntie,” “Vonnie,” “Loonie,” or “Mia,” was an amazingly fun, vibrant, and generous woman who touched so many people’s lives. Her fun spirit radiated inside and out. She made her family laugh whenever she was around them. One would not know when she was angry, as her anger was laughable. Yvonne always took immense pleasure in the accomplishments of her nieces, nephews, and siblings. She was a unique and incredibly special woman and will be extremely missed.
She leaves to cherish her memories one brother Chris Edward Pontoon: two sisters Justine Sapp and Martha Pontoon Batey, eight nieces, eight nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, a host of other relatives as well as friends. The following is the Zoom Information for services for Ms. Yvonne Pontoon Meeting ID: 761 770 1065 Passcode: Pontoon Memorial Service will begin streaming Wednesday, March 9th, 2022 at 10:45 AM

Ernest N. Virgil - Unknown - January 14, 2022

Departed: 01/14/2022 (Amityville)
Obituary Preview: OBITUARY – ERNEST N. VIRGIL
Ernest “Ernesto” N. Virgil was born on October 29,1944 to John & Marie L. Virgil in Jamaica, Queens, New York. He was a member of the 1963 graduating class of Farmingdale High School where he was involved in many activities; most notably Wrestling. He loved Long Island and worked for the town of Babylon’s Department of Public Works from 1968 until retiring in 2000.
Ernesto enjoyed life on his terms. Described as a “momma’s boy” there was no doubt that he loved her. For those closest to him, none were ever surprised when he often uttered the phrase “Ai Chi Wawa” when annoyed or dismayed. One of the most vivid memories of nieces and nephews of “Uncle Ernest” is of them holding on for dear life as they SPED down the road huddled in his Red Convertible Oldsmobile. Slicked back hair, shirt unbuttoned down to his stomach and his newly found Jamaican accent, was the Ernesto brand! Ernest loved spending time with his family and seemed most comfortable and his truest self while playing cards, laughing and eating good food with them. All who knew him well can still hear him saying “Give me an order of chicken wings and fried rice!” Decidedly gruff, Ernest was also tender-hearted and generous. There are many testimonials to his silently meeting a need without fanfare or the desire for applause. He was also the family’s “great connector.” He always sought after the absent and even yet unknown family member to reconnected them to the fold.  Aunt Mini in Spanish Harlem, Aunts Eleanor and Margaret in Brooklyn, and so many others were recipients of his familial love and tenacity. Although he had no biological children, he was not left bereft in his old age because his nieces and nephews were his children. For all of them and the rest of us Earnest left a roadmap to follow: whether married or unmarried, parents or not, we must never forget that we are all members of a particular family that deserves our unconditional love and loyalty.
Ernest “Ernesto” N. Virgil passed away Friday, January 14, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was 78 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Marie Virgil; Sisters, June Hicks, Gloria Elliott and Rosemarie Hunter, and Niece Tracy Young Brewer.
Ernest is survived by sisters; Ruthann Young, Queens NY, Lisa Green- Hatchett, Jackson, MS and Susan Robinson, Atlanta, GA. Brothers; John L. Virgil Jr., NYC, George Virgil, Fontana, CA, Peter Virgil-Green, Long Island, NY, Mario Virgil, Atlanta, GA, Paul A. Green, Chattanooga, TN and Anthony Green, Atlanta, GA. Nieces; Lenora Hunter, Tanya Hicks, Denine Virgil, Angie Vidal, Danielle Virgil, April Virgil-Green, Leticia Virgil-Green, Jazmine Virgil-Green, Joy Virgil-Green, Olivia Green, Jessica Green, Ashley Romain, and Jasmine Romain. Ciara was gifted to her foster mother, Teresa Cockrell and raised in Amityville, New York. Ciara attended Copiague Elementary Schools and graduated from Brennan High School. Shortly after, Ciara attended Nassau Community College, where she studied Nursing.
As a young person, Ciara loved singing in the Children’s Choir at the Bread of Life World Outreach Center. Ciara received Jesus as Lord and Savior at a young age. I would often hear Ciara making up her own worship songs to the Lord while drifting off to sleep.
Ciara was a certified Nursing Assistant; she worked in a variety of job roles in nursing. Ciara loved working with the elderly most of all. She would come home laughing with all the stories and goings on at the nursing home. Ciara worked at the Berkshire Nursing Home, St. Mary’s, and the Dietary Department at the Dominican Village.
Ciara loved to draw and paint. She also enjoyed creating hairstyles; she once thought about starting her own hair styling and make-up business.
Ciara was a single mother raising her three children to the best of her ability. Ciara loved her children more than anything and always wanted the best for them. She often gathered the children together in the car heading for a special occasion at a family and friends gathering.
Ciara’s favorite color was red, and her favorite flower was a Rose. She loved “valentine’s Day”, her birthday celebrations would be covered with hearts and roses themed after Valentine’s Day. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, it meant family gathering, and great food. No matter where Ciara found herself on Thanksgiving. She had to make a special trip to Grandma Josephine’s house on Queens to get “coco bread” and all the other Caribbean delights.
In all Ciara struggles in life, she always reached out to the Lord. She attended Freedom Chapel “Teen Challenge” and New Hope Baptist Church to name a few. Ciara’s megawatt smile lit up the room. She will be missed.
Ciara was preceded in death by her daughter Trinity Angel. Ciara leaves to cherish her memory, her three beautiful children (in which she passed down that smile), Shawn, Tre, and Tiani and their father, Terrence; her mother Teresa Cockrell; her parents, Jocelyn and Anthony; her brother David; her sisters Yolanda, Tenisha, Jazmeah and other siblings; Grandmother, Josephine; step father, Preston; and a host of extended family and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They offer a sense of closure and allow loved ones to come together to mourn and remember the person who has passed.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or mortuary. In some cases, a friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, achievements, and other personal details that help to tell the story of their life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies, but typically involves contacting the newspaper's obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on the necessary information and formatting requirements.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to have control over how they are remembered. This can be a unique and thoughtful way to approach end-of-life planning.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?
