Obituary Preview: Celebrating Aunt Dollie
Dollie D. Merchant (Dimp) was born February 22, 1932. She lived a life full of love and laughter.  After 89 years of health and happiness, Dollie peacefully transitioned into the arms of the Lord on April 7, 2022.  Dollie was preceded in death by her parents Tillman and Evelyn Williams, sisters; Jesse McKie, Vernell Corley, brothers; Tillman Williams, and Lonnie Williams.
Dollie was educated in Aiken County Schools.  She joined Samaria Baptist Church at an early age.  Her adventurous personality led her to move North.  She spent time in Indiana before settling in Detroit for most of her adult years.  In Detroit she joined Mount Olive Baptist Church.   Because caring for others brought Dollie great joy, she followed her passion and became a part of the nursing ministry.  She served God by being a dedicated member until she returned to South Carolina.  Upon returning, she went back to her home church where Pastor and First Lady Sims, along with the congregation, welcomed her with open arms.  She enjoyed worshipping there and loved Pastor and First Lady Sims. She often spoke kindly of them and treasured their visits.
Dollie’s memories will be cherished by nieces; Eva Mae Isaac, Penn Lloyd, Sarah Brewton, Kathleen (Reese)Gunter, nephews; Joe Louis (Earlene) McKie Wade (Janice) Friday, Francis (Vernell) Williams, loyal, friend Lanora Keeling, and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Obituary Preview: Kessler Laron Gunter (Joe) was born April 24, 1972.  On April 4, 2022, Kessler’s family surrounded him with love and prayer as they said goodbye.  He became a member of Bibleway Church Wagener at a young age.  Early in life he discovered a natural talent for cutting hair.  After graduating from Wagener-Salley High School in 1990, he went on to attend Denmark Technical College.  He perfected his skills and graduated as a Master Barber in 1992.  During his time in Gunter’s barbershop, there was always laughter and fun.  Many look back and remember him as the one who gave them their first haircut.
He was loving and lived life with an open-heart willing to help others.  He loved animals, especially dogs.  Kessler was a devoted, loyal friend and created friendships that lasted a lifetime.  His most treasured friendship began the day he was born.  He would never say mama but called her “My Mama”.  They were inseparable in life.  Together, they laughed, shared special moments, cared for each other, and leaned on each other through situations good and bad.  He loved her with all his heart.
Memories of Kessler will be treasured by his parents: Jerome and Kathleen Gunter; Four sons. Emmanuel Gunter, Balum Gunter, Camron Gunter(Victoria), and Keylan Gunter; one brother A. Dwight H Guyton Sr. - August 24, 1959 - April 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Dwight H. Guyton Sr. (Pops) was born on August 24, 1959 to the late Reverend Wilson Guyton and Bernice Guyton. He departed this life on April 4, 2022.
Dwight was the third of six children. He was born in Miami and spent his early years in South Carolina before moving to Baltimore as an adolescent.
Dwight left his formal education at Baltimore City Public Schools and went to Job Corps to pursue his trade of cement finisher. He joined the US Army Reserves at the age of 17. After he was honorably discharged, he spent the next 40 years in the trade he loved.
Family came first to Dwight. His grandchildren were his heart. One of his favorite things was to take them to the park and race. They remember him doing fun things like having them walk on a fence to learn to balance and riding their bikes with them. Despite his height (he told everyone he was still growing), he was undefeated against his grandchildren in basketball. He would taunt them after their losses chanting ‘a woo woo woo woo’.
Dwight loved to visit churches and found a ‘home’ at each one. Prior to his death, he was a member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his three children, Dwight (Annie), Tia, and Tiana. Ten grandchildren, Mariah, Mon’yae, Essance, Dwight III, Anaya, James, Ac’qealiest, Kamaya, Michael, and Kameren. Four great-grandchildren, Damija, Mil’Angel, Ja’Don, and Kallani. His siblings, Clayton (Dee), Melissa (Kenneth), Raynard, Tracy, and Emmett (Tyretha. One Special friend, Karen, and a host of other relatives and friends.

During early years of Bobby Joe’s life, he attended A.L.Corbitt where he specialized in HVAC with heat & air conditioning. Bobby Joe was a fun and loving person who’s favorite saying was “don’t talk to me while I’m eating”. He loved vinyl records.

Obituary Preview: Alma Orean Lloyd also known as “Red” or “Salley Cat”, daughter of late Willie and Margaret Lloyd born May 27,1930. Gained her wings March 11, 2022. Married to the love of her life the late David Dunbar.
During her earlier years Mrs. Dunbar attended Schofield High School. At an early age she joined Jerusalem Branch Baptist Church. During her faithful years of membership, she served on the kitchen committee, Women’s Auxiliary and Senior Choir. She attended church faithfully and always made sure to coordinate her outfits with a matching hat. Always by her side was her loving husband and chauffeur, David.
She married the love of her life, David Dunbar on April 12, 1974. Through the years, Mrs. Dunbar held several jobs including a hard-working housekeeper for several families. She and her husband later opened their very own business, D & A Service Station in Salley, SC which they operated for over 25 years. They decided to semi retire and then opened D and A Country Store which was right in their front yard.
Mrs. Dunbar loved the outdoors, she enjoyed planting flowers in her flower bed or attending to her Azaleas. She also loved to care for her family. She found joy always in the kitchen cooking and she never failed to hum a tune the entire time. You could often catch her sitting in her recliner, watching her favorite soap operas with one of her great grands on her lap. She was famous for wearing her signature fragrance, White Diamonds perfume. And Anything she said she was going to do, SHE DID.
She preceded to death by her parents, husband David Dunbar, daughter Betty Smith, brother Phillip Lloyd, and sister Doris Lloyd. Those left to cherish her precious memories are, brothers Joseph Lloyd (Marion), Willie Lloyd Jr. (Bertha); sister Connie Jones; Granddaughters, Taunya Swedenburg (Willie), Sonya Smith Mckenzie (Dante); Great-grandchildren Jerel Swedenburg, Taunija Swedenburg, Oriana Smith, Tayvon Mckenzie, Makaijah Walker; Great-Great Grand Jaceon Swedenburg, and host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and many friends.

Obituary Preview: David Dunbar also known as “Grandpa” and “DD” was born August 5, 1928, to Ed Axson and Molly Dunbar. He was a man who spoke his mind. He loved his wife, grandkids, and welding. His favorite sport was Baseball, and his favorite team was the Atlanta Braves. He also had a special saying “take care of my wife” Which was Alma Dunbar, who he loved dearly. He gained his wings and joined the Lord on March 4, 2022.
During his earlier years, He joined Sardis Baptist Church. He later joined Jerusalem Branch Baptist Church where he served on the Brotherhood and the Senior Choir, where he attended faithfully until his health failed.
He wedded the love of his life, Alma Lloyd on April 12, 1974. Through the years Mr.Dunbar held several jobs including, Power National, SC Highway Department. Mr.Dunbar was also a local Entrepreneur, he and Mrs. Alma Owned D and A Service Station for over 25 years until they retired. They then opened D & A Country Store right in their front yard.
Mr. Dunbar was a self-taught master welder. He was a volunteer fireman for the Salley Fire Department. He enjoyed working in his garden; when he wasn’t gardening, he could be found talking on his CB Radio to people all over the United States. His CB handle was “Gas Pumper”.
Mr.Dunbar loved and supported his family. He preceded to death by his parents, his daughter, Betty Smith. Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Alma L. Dunbar, One daughter, Linda Acoff (William), Brother-in-laws, Joseph Lloyd (Marion), Willie Lloyd Jr. (Bertha). Granddaughters Taunya Swedenburg (Willie), Sonya Smith- McKenzie (Dante). Charlie Rowe - August 01, 1955 - March 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Charlie Hampton Rowe was born August 1, 1955, in Aiken County, South Carolina to the late Andrew Rowe and Gladys Thompson Rowe. On March 3, 2022, he transitioned from this life to be with the Lord.
Charlie enlisted in the United States Navy on September 21, 1973. He served honorably and received the National Defense Service Medal. Charlie loved his family and friends and will be truly missed.
He was preceded in passing by his parents, and grandson, Antonio Whitfield.

Linda was a sweet, compassionate woman who liked cooking, playing Bingo and always went above and beyond to satisfy her family and loved ones. Mrs. Petty gained her wings early Saturday morning February 19, 2022. Linda was a graduate of Culinary Arts. She also was a beloved mother who was loved by so many. She loved to cook and would like to feed everyone she could. She was always known as the “Neighborhood MOM”. She was our HERO!

Hastings was born on April 2nd, 1941, to Naomi and Arthur Snipes in Aiken, SC. As a child Hastings spent most of his days helping on the family farm, and as an adult spent most of his life driving trucks and collected what he considered to be “treasures”.
Hasting’s was always known for his laid back, fun-loving, hard-working personality. He enjoyed being on the go, tinkering with any number of projects, fishing, and most of all spending time with family and friends whom he loved dearly.
He preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Snipes, both parents Arthur Snipes and Naomi Fulmer, and his twin Harry Snipes. Those left to cherish his memories are his brother Richard (Linda) Snipes, his daughter Tonya Whaley, his stepson Ernest Beckner, his grandchildren, Anthony (Shelly) May, Selina Eubanks, Sierra Snipes, Amy (Tad) Stone, Heather (Justin) Goforth, Shana Simpson, his great-grandchildren, Chase, Garrett, and Jeffery Stone, Ashley Rushing, Caleb Densmore, Hailey Grey, Jacob and Kylie Goforth and his Treasured Friend Renee Rushton. She was a very sweet and strong woman who loved to fish and spoil anyone she surrounded (the entire family). When she got overwhelmed, her favorite saying was “my Lord”. During Elizabeth’s early life she attended school in Aiken County. She was a dedicated member of the Chalk Hill Baptist Church where she served on the senior choir and served as a Deaconess. She attended faithfully until her health declined She worked at Rikards Nursing Home until she retired to take care of her mother. She loved fishing, cooking, spending time in the yard taking care of her flowers, and sitting on the porch waving at every car that blew as they passed by. Her favorite scripture was Ezekiel 37:3-4 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother William Johnson, husband James Barnes Sr, two sons Jasper and Donnie Smith, and three daughters Gwendolyn Smith, Lillie Ruth Barnes, and Isabell Davenport. She leaves to cherish her memories, three sons James Barnes Jr, Gradie Barnes (Annie Barnes), Willie Barnes, all of Wagener, SC. One aunt, Alberta Ables, Wagener, SC. One uncle, Arthur Ables, Miami, FL. Five sister in laws Louise Barnes and Edella Barnes Both of Jamaica, NY, Diane Barnes, Suitland, MD, Corine Barnes, Wagener, SC, and Shirley Holmes, Lexington, SC. 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. Robert Fitzgerald Landy - January 28, 1970 - January 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: On January 16, 2022, the angel of mercy came to rescue Robert Fitzgerald Landy from the life of pain and suffering. “BASE”, as he is better known, is the son of Mary D. Faust and the late Robert Lee Landy. He was also the loving stepson of the late Jerry Faust. Robert was born on January 28, 1970. He never married. He had been asked, “do you have any children?” His answer… “all children are my children. I can always send them home to their parents.”
Robert attended elementary and middle schools of Wagener and graduated from Wagener-Salley High School 1988. While attending Wagener-Salley HS, he was active in sports playing basketball and football. He was part of the Wagener-Salley Football Lower State Champions in 1987. He then attended Denmark Technical College where he received an Associate Degree in Auto Paint and Body. He worked for a while at Robert Felder Body and Auto Repair. He has worked at several places, ASCO, Contract work at SRP, Michelin and his last job was at Hubbell.
At an early age, he became a member of Jerusalem Branch Baptist Church. He was a member of the Youth Choir, he worked for a while as an Usher, a technical assistant for the sound system and a Trustee. He enjoyed the time he had at Jerusalem Branch. Base, Robert, was a friend and neighbor to all people. He had a good heart and believed that everyone else was good. He could fix anything. The family knew if there was something mechanical, electrical or computer related, call Bobby, he knew how to fix it. He had a great mind to look at a project and know exactly how it should be fixed. There is not enough paper to put into focus all that he was and what he was capable of. The people who knew him understand the meaning of that sentence.
Robert is survived by his mother Mary Faust, one brother, Christopher M. Landy, nieces, Brittney N. Brown and Karley M. Landy, his nephew, Ryan C. Landy, his stepsisters, Stephanie F. (David) White and Tonya F. (Quentin) Corbitt, a stepbrother, Stephon (Tonya) Faust, aunts, Brendalyn (Lewis) Kitchings, Samuretta (Emanuel) Muldrow, Mildred Christian, Bertha Green, Patricia (Marilyn) Tyler, Gwen Edwards, Anita Landy, and Debra (Ronnie) Tyler. Two great aunts, Margaret Davis and Charity Davis, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Belinda Jones and Shenequa Washington of Regency Southern Care Hospice Services.

Dr. Mary E. Ashley-Livingston - December 04, 1950 - January 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Dr. Mary Elizabeth Ashley-Livingston was born on December 4, 1950, to the late Clyde Ashley and Quincy Marie Ashley in Salley, South Carolina.  She received her primary and secondary education at the A. L. Corbett School ultimately receiving her high school diploma from the South Carolina Adult Education Program.  She received Christ at an early age having been baptized at the Piney Grove Baptist Church in Perry, South Carolina on July 6, 1960.
In 1966, Dr. Ashley-Livingston married Reverend Dr. L. V. Johnson, Sr. in Richland County, South Carolina.  From this union, four (4) children were born, Arlene, Marlene, Levan, Jr. and Christopher.
As a life-long learner, Dr. Ashley-Livingston received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Benedict College in 1973.  She later received a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Teaching from University of South Carolina - Upstate in 1978 and a second Master of Arts Degree in School Administration/Supervision from University of South Carolina – Columbia in 1989. In 2005, Dr. Ashley-Livingston earned a Doctor of Education Degree in Elementary and Middle School Administration/Principalship from the Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Ashley-Livingston had a distinguished career in Education impacting the lives of thousands of elementary school age children for over thirty-four (34) years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and throughout the state of South Carolina.  She served as an elementary school science teacher, assistant principal, principal and school district administrator prior to her retirement in February 2007.
In 1998, Dr. Ashley-Livingston married Vandie Livingston in Perry, South Carolina. As a result of this union, Dr. Ashley-Livingston gained a bonus family including a daughter, Lizbeth, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Upon retirement, she entered a second career as a grant writer and educational consultant for over fifteen (15) years.  It was Dr. Ashley-Livingston’s joy to help individuals and entities identify the resources necessary to fulfill mission and purpose.  The great joy of her grant writing career was writing the grant to build the Samaria Sunday School Union, Incorporated building in her hometown of Perry, South Carolina.  In addition to this grant, Dr. Ashley-Livingston worked closely with the Samaria Sunday School Union as a member of the Executive Board and constant supporter.
As a proud alumna of Benedict College, Dr. Ashley Livingston loved “her” Benedict Tigers.  She was a constant supporter of her alma mater and active alumna of Benedict College National Alumni Association. Dr. Ashley-Livingston constantly encouraged other alumni to both join their local alumni club and provide financial support for Benedict College.  She not only encouraged others to show support, but she showed her support for Benedict by joining the Half Century Club and the Benefactor Club at Benedict College. She was a constant voice in the Salley-Springfield Benedict Alumni Club, always promoting support of her alma mater. Upon moving to Baltimore to spend time with her children, Dr. Ashley-Livingston joined the Baltimore Benedict Club. She was known to bring a sweet spirit to all gatherings.  Club members also relied on Dr. Ashley-Livingston for inspiration and knowledge.  At the time of her death, Dr. Ashley-Livingston served as the President of the Baltimore Benedict Club where her last act as President was to moderate the December Club meeting and sending heartfelt Christmas greetings to all members.
Dr. Ashley-Livingston loved God and enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved to travel, spend time with friends and was an avid Scrabble player.  She also loved shopping at Dollar General and Walmart for “her knick-knacks”.  She had an infectious smile that would light up any room she entered and warm the hearts of every person she encountered. She loved her church families and faithfully supported Piney Grove Baptist Church and First Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church.
Dr. Ashley-Livingston was also constant source of private support to many students going to college and seeking other advanced degrees.  From words of encouragement to financial gifts and care packages and even tuition assistance, she worked hard to support the next generation of African American professionals.
Dr. Ashley-Livingston is rejoined in Heaven with her husband, Vandie Livingston, her parents, Clyde Ashley and Quincy Marie Ashley and three of her siblings, Eleanor Marie Ashley, Clyde Ashley Jr, and Clayton Ashley. Lonjamhel attended A-L Corbett Middle School where she joined band class and became a flute player. Once Ms. Kitchings reached Wagener-Salley High School she joined the Marching Band to continue playing the flute. While In High School she was also a part of a summer reading program and a tutor program where she helped others with their schoolwork. She graduated from Wagener-Salley High School and later obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Communications from USC of Aiken. She later became a Co-Founder of Girls in Grace.
Ms.Kitchings was a proud faithful member of the Saron Baptist church. She was a part of the Kitchen Committee, and she also served as a choir director of the youth for a year. She was a choir member from her late teenage years up until her health started to decline.
She preceded to death by her parents Lonnie and Juanita Davis. She was survived by her 2 loving sisters Nytia D. Kitchings (Wagener), RaJundra B. Kitchings (Columbia), 1 niece Karina D. Obituary Preview: Sister Marian Marie Thompson Adams, 82 of Washington Circle, Aiken, South Carolina was born in the Kitchings Mills Community of Salley, South Carolina to the late Purvis “Bush” Thompson and the late Viola Williams “Babe” Thompson.  She was the 2nd oldest child of ten.  God called Sister Marian Marie to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 7th 2021 around 1:30 p.m.
At an early age, she joined the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Salley, South Carolina and she was a faithful member until her health began to decline.  She found great joy and respect in her church responsibilities and enjoyed working in the position as a member of the Women Home Mission Ministry and later became the president. She planned many visits to the nursing home for church services, and served on the Senior Choir for many years singing and praising God through songs. She was also a member of the Orion Chapter #135 of the Eastern Stars where she served as Worth Matron from 2006 to 2009.
Sister Marie received her education at Aiken County Public School, and graduated from A. L. Corbett High School in Wagener, South Carolina. She continued her education at Area Trade School in 1959 (Denmark Tech) and received her degree in Cosmetology.  She was the owner of the Marie’s Beauty Salon of Wagener, SC, position that she worked in for many years and loved every moment of it.  She also worked at SmithKline Beecham in Aiken, SC and retired after 15 years of service.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to Trustee James George Adams in 1961 who preceded her in death in December 1984.
Marie was preceded in death by five siblings: three brothers, John A. Thompson, Sonny Thompson and Horace Thompson and two sisters, Janet Lewis and Murlean Thompson.  Now, the family chain has been broken once again.
She leaves to cherish her fond and loving memories, her loving daughter Shirley Marie (Willie) Glover and dearest son Tyrone Fitzgerald Adams.  Grandchildren Wilshanta Nicole Glover, Donta’ Shir-James Glover and Tia Diamond Adams; Great-grands – Jacob Breon Glover and Auburn Naomi Glover.

Auntie Ruth as she was endearingly called by so much of her family, loved to take care of children. She raised many foster kids over the years; Adele F. Brown-Perkins (now deceased), Thomas and Kimberly Jemison-Russell, Joshua and that’s just to name a few, she adopted Canaris, and Darius Simmons. On December 18th, 2018, she succumbed to a long battle with emphysema.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Robbie Jackson Felder Sr., her six children, Robbie Jackson Felder Jr., Alvin David Felder Sr., Edward Riceton Felder, Jeffrey Lawrence Felder, Canaris Simmons and Darius Simmons. He was the life of the party and continued to display a sense of humor - even after his health declined. He was a proud man and fought to maintain his independence even unto death. However, on the morning of November 8, 2021, the Lord called him home at age 82.
Sonny was born to the late Cleo and James C. Holmes on August 10, 1939. During his early life, he attended ­­­­­­A.L. Corbett , Aiken County Public School. He later worked at Savannah River Plant for 30 years. Sonny also was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and served as a faithful Gethsemane member.
In addition, Sonny was a huge sports fan and loved baseball. He was a lifelong Dodgers fan and even played recreational baseball like a professional! First Base was his position. He had an advantage due to his height and could catch a ball at any speed or direction, high or low. Due to his tall stature and skills on the diamond, he earned the nickname "Dusty." Sonny also acted as an unofficial neighborhood watch. He did not mind reporting suspicious activity in the neighborhood.
Mr. J.W. Holmes was preceded in death by his parents, brothers (J.C. and Leroy Holmes), sisters (Bernice Holmes and Gracie Samuel), and aunt (Elease Holmes Tyler). He leaves behind his Godbrother (Johnny Stroman), nieces (Beatrice Holmes, Marilyn Gilley (Stanley), Alecia "Lisa" Samuel, Michelle Samuel, Angela Samuel), best friend (Marion Millhouse), cousins (Grace Hancook, Rev. Estelle Sally Hammond and Albert Hammond), and a host of relatives, great/grand-nieces & nephews, cousins & friends.

Michael began working at the early age of 12. He worked several years at Savannah River Site where he gained several certifications. He had always wanted to be a truck driver and he spent over a decade doing just that before retiring. After retiring, Michael joined the The Shop Boys Social Club where he volunteers in the neighborhood. He recently became a member of the Aiken Disabled Veterans Chapter 43.
Michael was a family man, and he loved his family dearly.  He took on the role as a father model to his siblings at an early age. He loved sports and was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Braves.  He enjoyed spending time with friends and loved ones. He always made a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Ezell Staley.
