Departed: 04/29/2024 (Merced)
Obituary Preview: Lo Mejor Dios vio que te estabas cansando y
Una cura no iba a ser. Entonces estrecho sus brazos y murmuro: “ven a mi lado.” Llorando te observamos y te vimos partir, aunque nuestro amor era muy grande nada
te pararia de irte. Tu corazon de oro dejo de latir, y
tus manos activas descansaron. Dios destrozo nuestros corazon, para comprobar que solo
se lleva lo major.

Yolanda R. Carrasco - April 18, 2001 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Merced)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved mother passed away on April 13, 2024 at the age of 86. Her name was Yolanda Rostro Carrasco, but many knew her as Martha. She married Jose Zamarripa. Our mother lives on through her seven children and nine stepchildren and many grandchildren.
Mom was the personification of Corinthians 13:4-8 — for her love was patient and kind, never jealous, nor boastful or conceited, and never rejoiced in wrongdoing. When speaking with you, she made you feel like you were the only person in the room. What you said mattered to her, and she did everything she could to help you.
Our mother was a woman of many accomplishments — the biggest of which is her children. She worked tirelessly (never complaining) all the days of her life to support her family. Furthermore, education was extremely important to her. She obtained a GED and nearly completed her AA at Merced Community College — earning a 4.0 GPA in all her classes. Mom volunteered in many ways to provide for others. She led a choir at Sacred Heart Church for over forty years, and played the guitar for her children. Our mother loved to cook for others, loved to crochet and sew, but most of all she loved the Lord. She was a faithful Catholic, going to church and praying for all of us and the world. Rest in Peace Beloved Mother.

Barbara Gene Harmon - October 12, 1945 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Merced)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Harmon was born in Merced, California on October 10, 1945. She died March 25, 2024. She was born to Basil and Phyllis Sullens, and grew up with her brother, Robert Sullens in Merced. She also had a half brother, Melvin Sullens.
Except for short times in McMinnville, Oregon; Spokane, Washington; and Carmel, California, she lived her whole life in Merced.
She was a registered nurse, and worked in the emergency room in Oakland, at Mercy Hospital, Merced Hospice, and the Head Start Program through the County of Merced. In recent years, she was an advisor to UC Merced.
Her two boys were her pride and joy. David, and his wife Sylvia, have a beautiful daughter named Stella. Having a grandchild was the highlight of Barbara’s life. Her second son, Mark-Alan, has lived a life of adventure and has shared that with her. She lived her whole life with two Siamese cats. Rascal and Sweet Pea will miss her. 55 of her 78 years on this planet were spent with the love of her life, Bob. He was her travel buddy, card partner, and caretaker. For the last 15 years, he put on her shoes and socks every morning for her because she couldn’t reach. He did it with adoration. He loved her as much as she loved him.
Barbara was always up for an adventure. She loved the National Parks and made her husband drive hundreds of miles just to say she had been to them. She was in Scotland with Rotary, stranded in Paris on 9/11, and had a special place in her heart for Sweden.
Barbara was the most amazing host. Her sons were famous for offering up their mom as a bed and breakfast, and she accepted with a smile, and loved having everyone there. This includes the year that she had Daniel, the Swedish exchange student. She has had people staying in their house from all over the world. At the drop of a hat, she would make dinner, make a bed, and welcome anyone. She went on two amazing road trips with her husband, and her son, Mark-Alan. The first one was in 2021 for 35 days visiting 12 countries. Just a few months ago, she went on a 45 day road trip from Sweden to Italy. She was in Grindelwald, Switzerland; the canals of Venice; the Colosseum in Rome; the Sistine Chapel; the Basilica, Tuscany; the French Riviera, and Bavaria. She had dreamt about visiting all of these places since she was a little girl. She did the second trip with a walker and while on oxygen. “I can be tired and uncomfortable at home, or out seeing the world. I choose the world.”
Barbara had Lupus for 50 years. She did not suffer from it. She just had it. Lupus did not define what she could and couldn’t do. It didn’t define who she was. She lived a life full of adventure, joy, and laughter. She was an example to all of us.
Her faith in the Lord was always her guide. When she was preparing for any of her numerous medical procedures, she went in with confidence, knowing however it turned out, it would be God’s will. Her involvement with the Presbyterian Church brought her joy, purpose, and an abundance of beautiful friends.
She is leaving behind her two sons, David and Mark-Alan; daughter-in-law, Sylvia; grand daughter, Stella; half-brother, Melvin; nephews, Randy, Scott, and Michael, and a loving extended family. And of course her best friend and husband of 55 years, Bob. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on March 30 at Central Presbyterian Church in Merced, California. Pink was her favorite color, so if you would like to send flowers, send pink ones. Gifts can be made in her honor to Find Your Way, her son’s entrepreneurial charity: Find Your Way

ANNA T KUNIOSHI - April 21, 1935 - December 14, 2023

Departed: 12/14/2023 (Merced)
Obituary Preview: ANNA KUNIYOSHI Obituary
Anna Tomi Kuniyoshi died peacefully at home on Thursday Dec 14, 2023 at the age of 88. A combination of exceptional strength and gentle femininity, Anna held a deep awareness of and devotion to the growth and struggles of those around her.
Anna grew up in Merced in the Tanioka farming family, with her parents and 9 brothers and sisters. After graduating from Merced High School, she set off on adventures with her sisters, including living in New York City for a time. She was bright, curious, and a lifetime reader and learner, qualities that secured her first job, working for the Rockefellers in their Manhattan library archives. She attended college at UCLA, earning a degree in Education. While there, a young man from a Le Grand farming family proposed to her and she accepted. She married the love of her life and best friend Dan Kuniyoshi in 1961. They shared a wonderful life together, with Dan farming almonds and tomatoes, and her teaching. Together they raised two sons, Danny and Jon, and shared a devotion to family and community. Anna taught second grade at Margaret Sheehy Elementary School in Merced for 30 years. She cared deeply for her students, and endeavored to instill in them curiosity, knowledge, and independence.
After retiring from her teaching career, she ran the Kuniyoshi farm after her Dan passed, doted on her 3 grandchildren: Alyssa, Ty and Lia, who were incredible sources of joy, and remained devoted to family and community. She had more adventures with her sisters and children, travelling to visit family in Japan and to tour the areas of France in which her husband served in the 442nd infantry campaigns in WWII.
While she never talked about her acts of service, her children found that it was impossible to take Anna anywhere in Merced without her being reverently greeted by a smiling someone to inquire about her wellbeing, thank her for her generosity, and tell us how lucky we were to have her.
Despite her children’s incessant begging for her to come and live with them, she chose to remain on the Le Grand farm, close to Dan’s final resting place. To be in her home, filled with family photos and artful love notes from her students and grandchildren, surrounded by almond trees and the memories of a life well-lived, one understands why.
She will be achingly missed by her family. Anna is survived by her children Danny (and Karen) Kuniyoshi; Jon (and Catherine) Kuniyoshi; grandchildren Alyssa, Ty and Lia Kuniyoshi; brothers and sisters James (and Susan) Tanioka, Marlene Tanioka, Emi Tanioka, and Tom (and Ann) Tanioka; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Dan Kuniyoshi; parents Kojiro and Fude Tanioka; brothers George Tanioka and Chuck Tanioka; and sisters Mary Tomura, Takako Paul, and Marjorie Yoshino.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of someone's passing with family, friends, and community, and often includes information about funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also serving as a notification to those who knew them. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians, as they often include detailed information about a person's life and accomplishments.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it may also be written by a funeral home or other organization. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary should include the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography that highlights their accomplishments, interests, and relationships. It may also include information about surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any charities or organizations that the family would like donations to be made to in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements in an obituary. This can be a great way to add a personal touch and make the obituary more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Typically, you'll need to contact the newspaper or website directly and provide them with the written obituary and any accompanying photos or other media. Be sure to check their submission guidelines and deadlines in advance.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary in advance can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and accomplishments. It can also be a helpful way to ensure that your loved ones have all the information they need to create a meaningful tribute after you're gone.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, while an obituary is a more detailed tribute that includes biographical information and other details. Death notices are often used in situations where a full obituary is not possible or desirable.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the deceased's life that you're unsure how to handle in an obituary, it's best to err on the side of discretion and tact. Focus on celebrating their positive qualities and achievements, rather than dwelling on negative or controversial topics.
