Betty Norman - November 09, 1929 - April 30, 2024

Departed: 04/30/2024 (Pierre)
Obituary Preview: Betty Norman,94, of Pierre died on Tuesday, April 30 at Edgewood Living in Pierre.
Elizabeth “Betty” Blanche Riggle was born on November 9, 1929, in Griffith, Indiana, to George and Sylvia (Dick) Riggle. When she was a teenager she moved to Pierre, South Dakota, to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Fritz Forney. Upon graduating from Pierre High School, Betty obtained her teaching certificate from Northern State Teachers College.
After graduating from Northern, Betty married Leonard Warne. Leonard and Betty had five children; Cindy, Monte, Mona, Susan and Karen. Betty was a devoted wife and mother, working tirelessly on the couple’s family farm, raising her beloved children. She sewed beautiful clothes for her daughters and was an accomplished knitter. Betty rarely missed an event her children were involved in, whether it be sports or school concerts, etc. Betty was the original “health nut” long before it was a popular trend. She was adamant about making sure her kids had a healthy upbringing, which meant they were “deprived” of any processed, sugar-coated, preservative-infused food. Every year she raised a huge garden and froze or canned her harvest. She even had a wheat grinder on the kitchen counter so she could grind the wheat to make the flour to make the bread. Although her children didn’t realize it at the time, Betty knew the importance of eating clean, wholesome food. Thanks, Mom!!
Betty married Gaylord Norman in 1992. From this marriage she became stepmother to Mike, Mork, Zay, Jill and Marty. Betty and Gaylord shared many happy years together. Among other things, they enjoyed family get-togethers, playing cards with friends and traveling in their motorhome. Betty and Gaylord especially enjoyed dancing. It was a beautiful sight to watch them effortlessly floating across a dance floor, never missing a beat.
Grateful for being a part of Betty’s life are her husband Gaylord, children Cindy (Dave) Bisbee, Monte (Pam) Warne, Mona Weiger, Sue (Roger) Hodge, Karen Warne, grandchildren Derek Droz, Amanda (Shawn) Johnson, Tyler Warne, Madison (Clayton) Dowdy, Kyle (Kelcy) Weiger, and Gaylord’s entire Norman family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by granddaughter Katie (Warne) Lindsey, grandson Lucas (Sue Hodge) Billingsley, and stepson Zay Norman.
Per Betty’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Linda Nordvold - April 15, 1950 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Pierre)
Obituary Preview: Linda Nordvold,74, of Pierre formerly of Eagle Butte died on Sunday, April 28 at Avantara in Pierre. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 8th at the All-Saints Parish in Eagle Butte. Linda Nordvold was born in Ganado, AZ on April 15th, 1950 to Jerry and Mary Ann Roan. Growing up, Linda helped out on the Roan family ranch herding sheep in Oakridge, AZ and she attended school in Fort Defiance, AZ. Linda worked in the communications industry her entire life and began her career in Arizona where she once placed a long-distance call for the movie actor, Clint Eastwood!
In 1972, Linda met her husband, Blaine Nordvold, through a blind date set up by her beloved sister, Susie Roan (who was dating Blaine’s brother, Jud, at the time). Linda and Blaine got married on December 11th, 1973. They moved to South Dakota on January 1st, 1977, after Blaine acquired a cattle loan from FHA, where they lived with Blaine’s parents, Syd and Rose, for a bit. From there they moved into a little 10’ x 12’ shack on the Blanche Tolman Ranch until they bought their first home, a trailer house, set on Abear Creek. They lived there until they were able to afford a permanent home in 1980.
Linda helped Blaine whenever she could on the ranch…fencing, feeding hay, branding cattle, etc. Though she loved horses, she was always wary around them. One time she was holding a snorty team of horses while Blaine was hooking them up to a feed wagon. The horses spooked and she held on until they jerked her off her feet. She let go and never helped Blaine hitch up again! She enjoyed helping Blaine with the Fox Ridge Trail Ride, often times helping with the cooking then going on to work, then back again to do more cooking.
Linda began working for the CRST Telephone Authority in 1977. She was a dedicated Billing Clerk for several years, rarely taking a day off…even if her kids called her multiple times a day about non-existent tornadoes or the many squabbles they got into. She also served as the secretary/treasurer for the CRST Telephone Authority Employees Association. During her time at CRST Telephone Authority, she was awarded “Employee of the Year” twice. One of those awards included a trip to Orlando, FL to attend the National Telephone Convention, which she really enjoyed. Linda enjoyed working for the CRST Telephone Authority, enjoyed attending the annual Christmas parties, and had a special place in her heart for all her co-workers. She retired in 2016.
Linda enjoyed attending C-EB and Dupree basketball games, was an avid fan of the girls and boys’ basketball teams. She wore out many a vehicle traveling to and from work, to and from games, and on trips to visit family in Arizona. One of Blaine’s favorite memories of Linda is that before they met, she had bought a new car, a stick shift Volkswagen Beetle, and hadn’t even learned to drive yet! Linda was also an avid fan of the Professional Bull Riders Association (PBR). Her favorite bull riders were Adriano Moraes, Guilherme Marchi, JW Hart. She also loved listening to grandson, Melvin, play his guitar and loved granddaughter, April’s, artwork. Linda enjoyed country music, sewing, and occasionally beading, and a clean house and vehicle. She’d often get after daughter Cody for having a messy vehicle saying, “People look at your vehicle and think your house is the same” (which it wasn’t).
Above all, Linda loved being around family. She tried to make yearly trips to Arizona to visit her family there and talk Navajo (her first language). She was the most loving, generous, and supportive wife and mother and had a particularly special bond with grandkids Melvin and April; niece Stacie Nordvold & kids Bryce, Tigh, Jud, Syd; nephew Kelcey Nordvold (Whitney) & kids Gunner, Aksel, Aquila, Uriah, Vronti, Brazos; Great-grandson, Preston; and fur-babies Bluejeans and Boots. She will be deeply, deeply missed.
Linda is survived by her husband of 50 years, Blaine Nordvold; Son Roland Halona; Daughter Lakota Nordvold; Son Wendell “Bobby” Nordvold; Daughter Yura Nordvold; Step-son Shane Thompson, Step-daughter Sabrena Goodrum; Grandchildren Melvin Cummings and April Nordvold; Great-grandchildren Preston and Laina; Sisters: Fannie Roan, Susie Roan, Marlene Matsuno, Angeline Roan, Mary Rose Roan (Bill Vadasy), Geraldine Roan, Candace Bia (Art Sorell); Brothers: Gary Roan (Grace) and Terry Roan; Brother-in-Law Jerry Nordvold; Sisters-in-Law: Faye Longbrake, Mary Jo Garreau, Nan Savoy; Several nieces, nephews, grandkids, and great-grandkids; Fur-baby “Boots”.

Clara Annette Kellner Shelbourn was born in Valentine, Nebraska on April 23, 1932 to Ernst (Ernest) Ferdinand and Emma Nancy (Duering) Kellner. She was the youngest of 3 children. She grew up in Valentine living directly across from the schools she attended. She graduated from Valentine High School as the salutatorian of her class in 1950. She worked at the Bank of Valentine following graduation.
She met the love of her life, Dan Shelbourn, when he was 20 and she was 14 at a neighborhood box social. He never forgot her and they reconnected when she was 18 and he was 24. They married on June 8, 1952, in Valentine, Nebraska and they were blessed with two children. They lived on the family farm after marrying. Having never lived on a farm Clara adjusted quickly to the life of a farm wife receiving much loving advice from Dan’s mother. Dan’s health issues forced to them to leave the farm in 1957 and find different employment. His job with the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks found them living in Lemmon and Pierre, SD.
A life-long love of the Black Hills developed early on. She and Dan began camping in 1956 and that became an annual event for the rest of their lives. Life-long friendships developed over many shared camping trips. Having only two grandchildren they took them and many of their friends camping each summer. They treasured this time with them and many memories were lovingly created from these activities. It was a sad day for them when they sold their beloved motorhome in 2016.
Clara was an extraordinary secretary and highly praised for her skills. She took great pride in knowing shorthand and used it frequently. She worked as a secretary in schools in Lemmon and Pierre, at the Central South Dakota Education foundation, and at the South Dakota Education Association. After retirement she worked 15 sessions with the South Dakota Legislature as the secretary for the House Majority Leader.
Dan retired in 1988 and Clara retired one year later. In their retirement they traveled extensively having visited all of the states except Hawaii. A 10 week trip to Alaska was a highlight of their adventures. They traveled in Europe, England, and Scandinavia and treasured the memories and friendships made during those visits.
She and Dan attended nearly all of their son’s and grandchildren’s sporting events cheering them on from the sidelines. They were both avid Governor green supporters and attended many games and state tournaments even when their grandchildren were not involved. A true Nebraskan at heart, she was also a lifelong supporter of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Clara was known for her baking skills, especially her pies. Starting in 1982 she and Dan made scores of apple pies every fall. The most they made in one fall was 112. Those, along with her wonderful rhubarb custard pies, were always shared with family and friends and lovingly placed in freezers to be enjoyed later.
Both Clara and Dan were active members of Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre, and prior at churches in Valentine and Lemmon. Self-taught, Clara was an organist for many years in all of those churches until her arthritis prevented her from doing so. She was active in choir and bell choir, retiring from both in 2016 at the age of 84. She was a 50+ year member of Faith Circle whose members she considered family. Clara’s priority in her life was her faith, and she enjoyed sharing the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ with many.
Clara is survived by her children Ken Shelbourn and Nancy Shoup both of Pierre; grandchildren Katie (Josh) Nebelsick of Rapid City and Jacob (Chezarae) Shoup of Sioux Falls, and great-grandchildren William, Oliver, Joseph, and Franklin Nebelsick, and Elsie and Isaiah Shoup, brother-in-law Alan (Karen) Shelbourn of Kingston, WA; sister-in-law Annie Shelbourn of Jackson, MN and many nieces and nephews, as well as a host of dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Dan of nearly 67 years in 2019, her parents, brother Don and his wife Dorothy, sister Lydia and husband Marion, and an unnamed baby sister who died at birth, son-in-law Bob Shoup, and Dan’s siblings and spouses Joe and Ruth, Marjorie, Merle, and Ann and Tom Harvey.

Kris had one of those minds that loved to think about complex subjects. His academic curiosity and intelligence shone brightly in the classroom, earning him the admiration of both teachers and peers. He loved science. His science teacher was amazed when he saw Kris reading a physics book for pleasure. To the amazement of anyone who watched, Kris could solve a Rubik’s Cube in record time.

Working during the day and studying at night, Kris obtained the status of Journeyman Plumber in 2019. During his time with the union, he worked on many of Minneapolis's more significant construction projects.
He embraced his Irish heritage to the fullest, enjoyed listening to various Irish bands, and was always ready to enjoy a pint of Guinness, correctly poured, or a shot of Jameson. He proudly displayed a tattoo of the Guinness harp on his wrist.
Kris' body was a canvas for his eclectic personality. Kris captured the world around him with a unique and thoughtful perspective. His tattoos were a window into his soul, revealing his deep appreciation for life.
In December 2022, Kris moved to White River and lived with his father. Over the next 14 months, Kris and Jeff got to know each other better as father and son, and as men. Together, they battled the harsh winter of 2022 - 2023, helping countless people dig out of snowstorms. Kris impressed Jeff with his culinary skills and was always creating a new dish for Jeff to enjoy. Kris was very artistic and found Jeff’s shop the perfect place to work on his metal and wood projects. He loved helping Jeff on the Iwan family ranch and took a special interest and was quite successful in eradicating the ranch prairie dog population “by any means available.” While battling the prairie dogs, Kris took up rock collecting and amassed quite an assortment of rocks. He was beginning to establish himself as a plumber and had a bright future.
With his outgoing nature and strong work ethic, Kris made friends easily and impressed everyone he worked for. All who knew Kris had nothing but good things to say about him. He and Jane were passionate supporters of the Special Olympics and other organizations for individuals with disabilities.
He is survived by his son, William (Kathy) Hettinger of Pierre, SD; his daughter, Wendy (Wes) Otheim of Hartford, SD; and his brother, Bill Hettinger of Fort Collins, Colorado. He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Jane, his son Arthur, his parents, and his brother Ron.
His spirit will live on in those who knew him in the quiet moments spent fishing on the river.
