Dolores "Del" A. Grassano - April 21, 1928 - November 30, 2021

Departed: 11/30/2021 (Belleville)
Obituary Preview: Dolores “Del” (nee Russo) Grassano, of Bloomfield, N.J. entered into eternal life, with her loving family by her side, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Del the daughter of Linda (nee Rossi) and Joseph Russo, was born April 21, 1928, in Newark, N.J. She was a woman who loved her family and home. She was a creative person who loved to knit and crochet, bake and decorate. Del was always organized and "pulled together."
We all lovingly joked that to clean, organize and polish something was to "Del-ify" it.
She was a wonderful, loving wife to her husband Alfred "Al" of 73 yrs. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and extended family.
Del was a graduate of West Side High School in Newark, N.J. During her high school days, you could often find her at The Paramount Theater in Newark, swooning over crooner Frank Sinatra. She was part of the sock hop generation.
After high school she was employed by The Prudential Insurance Company in Newark. She quickly rose in rank to become the first woman to hold the title of Insurance Examiner.
Dancing on weekends was her favorite pastime and it was while at a dance that she met Al whom she would marry and remain with for 73 years.
Like most women of her time, she dreamed of motherhood and was so grateful to finally give birth to her daughter Lynn and then shortly thereafter, her daughter Gail.
In 1959, she moved into a new home in Bloomfield, N.J.,     where her neighbors quickly became like family and have remained that way to this day. Her door was always open for her extended family and friends. Del enjoyed hosting huge family holiday dinner celebrations. So many memories were made in her home where she resided for 62 years.
Del later became the bookkeeper for Al's diamond setting business and her daughter Gail's boutique. In her later years,  she crocheted and donated beautiful baby blankets for children with cancer and other diseases.
Dolores is survived by her precious husband, Alfred, her loving daughters Lynn Messina and her husband Sebastian, Gail Grassano-Ball and her husband James. Also, her grandchildren Danielle Messina and her husband Jonathan Irizarry, Alycia Messina and Adoran Ball. She is also survived by her godchildren Debbie Amorosa, Dr. Anthony Pastena, and Russell Pastena.
In the end she was "Home", where she belonged, surrounded by those she loved. Her last words were that she was "Greatly Happy." Entombment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington, N.J.
James is survived by two sisters, Patricia-Ann Cozzarelli & her significant other Edward Klingener, Sr. and Doctor Annette Olympia Cozzarelli-Franklin & her husband Doctor James Franklin. He is also survived by a niece, Catherine C. Klingener and many dear cousins.
James graduated from Belleville High School and went onto Wagner College, where he became interested in mortuary science. He attended the McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science. On August 10, 1970, James J. Cozzarelli, Jr became a licensed Practitioner of Mortuary Science in the State of New York. On June 21, 1974, James J. Cozzarelli, Jr. became a Practitioner of Mortuary Science in the State of New Jersey. James served his community for nearly 47 years. Mr. Cozzarelli found his calling and his life’s work, and that was by giving hope to the deceased’s loved ones, and dignity to the deceased by the caring, supportive, and dignified funerals. While James was still studying at the McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science he was recognized for facial reconstruction and cosmetology.
James was not only gifted in the art of Mortuary Science, he  possessed a distinction as an interior designer and his love of the arts. He had a flare for a special type of painting technique that would create marble and stone on walls. In 1992, he was selected as, “Who’s Who in Interior Design, 1992 International Edition”. James J. Cozzarelli, Jr. had a passion for several things. One is literacy and education as evidenced by his countless hours transforming the Belleville Public Library children’s Carnegie Reading Room with “outstanding volunteer work and splendid artistic skills, promoted and developed higher reading skills, school achievements, and cultural growth.” (An honor recognized by the Belleville Chamber of Commerce November 7, 1992.) Sunday, June 2, 1985, was named, “James J. Cozzarelli, Jr. Day” by Essex County Executive Peter Shapiro. Mr. Cozzarelli created a “plan to develop an ordinary space into a neoclassical space by combining modern sensibilities with a grand European tradition”. The children’s room was then renamed, James J. Cozzarelli, Jr. Room. To accomplish his goal, Mr. Cozzarelli spent nearly 300 hours over several months building and painting the illusion of marble and stone on the walls of the children’s room in the library. Even after his personal goal was met for what he envisioned a children’s reading room should look like, he continued to serve as a trustee of the library board and even served as President. On April 17, 1996, Mr. Cozzarelli received a plaque in appreciation of 20 years of service to the Belleville Public Library and Information System, as a trustee and devoted past president. His sense of volunteerism didn’t stop with the Belleville Public Library and Information System. He also became involved with the Columbus Day Parade and was the grand Marshall and Senator Scott extended special commendations to Mr. Cozzarelli, Jr. on October 18, 1992. On October 12, 1992, Mr. James Cozzarelli, Jr along with other influential citizens received a proclamation for the “Anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ Quincentennial Celebration”. That same year, Mr. Cozzarelli, Jr. was presented with another proclamation on March 1, 1992, for the work that he accomplished in the Belleville Public Library. He was recognized as being appointed a trustee in 1976 and continuing to serve many years in that capacity. The proclamation reads, “James J Cozzarelli, Jr is a gifted interior designer who worked magic in the dismal children’s room, transforming it to a room where children can dream”. Mr. Cozzarelli, Jr also created an association for the special needs population in Belleville, under the United Way. His volunteer association provided events for the special needs population. An interesting fact is that the popular TV series, “The Soprano’s” was filmed in the Irvine Cozzarelli Memorial Home, enabling James to meet the actors. This led to Mr. Cozzarelli joining the Screen Actors Guild. Another form of art that Mr. Cozzarelli, Jr. had great talent in was music. When he was young he had several different bands growing up. He was an extremely gifted pianist who was so confident, yet humble, that he could walk into a restaurant/bar where he was known and just sit down at their baby grand piano and entertain patrons. At times he was asked to keep playing when he was ready to get up. He could play any song and make it sound “bluesy”. Perhaps because of his love of art and beauty, that led him to decide to bring home a beautiful Afghan Hound with long fur that flowed like silk. Marcus became our beloved family dog for many years. His family recalls the holidays, especially as everyone grew older and went their separate ways, and James would play the piano and sometimes his sisters would try and play duets with him. He will be greatly missed not just by his family, but by his families he served caring for their loved ones, bringing them comfort and dignity. What is sad, is the potentially new families that will never have a funeral directed by James J. Cozzarelli, Jr. They will not experience it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and celebrate the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually shorter (around 100-200 words), while online obituaries can be longer (up to 500 words or more). It's essential to check with the publication or platform for specific guidelines.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging. Check with the publication or platform for their photo submission guidelines.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may require you to email or fax the obituary text and any accompanying photos. Be sure to ask about deadlines, pricing, and any specific formatting requirements.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional obituary, published on a website or social media platform. Online obituaries often offer more flexibility in terms of content, images, and video tributes. They can also be easily shared with others and remain accessible for years to come.

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some websites may keep obituaries archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the platform for their archiving policies.

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. Online obituary platforms usually allow you to make changes or updates to the obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the specific platform's policies and procedures.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites using keywords like the deceased person's name, date of birth and death, and location. You may also visit local libraries or genealogical societies that maintain archives of historical newspapers.

Are obituaries only for older people?

No. Obituaries can be written for anyone who has passed away, regardless of age. While it's true that older adults are more likely to have an obituary written about them, younger people who have made significant contributions or had a profound impact on their community may also be honored with an obituary.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?

Absolutely! Writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others. You can publish it online or share it with family and friends.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. They will typically work with you to correct the mistake and republish the revised obituary.

Can I use humor in an obituary?

Yes! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate the deceased person's personality and spirit. However, be mindful of your audience and ensure that any humorous anecdotes or remarks are respectful and won't offend those who are grieving.

Should I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Including information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's values and legacy. Be sure to specify the charity's name and address (if applicable).

Can I write my own obituary?

While it may seem unusual, some people do choose to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can provide a sense of control and allow you to shape how you're remembered. However, it's essential to discuss this with your loved ones beforehand to ensure they're comfortable with the idea.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a biographical sketch written about someone who is still alive. It's often used as a way to celebrate milestones or achievements during their lifetime rather than after they've passed away.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can post a link to the online obituary or share a brief summary along with relevant hashtags.

How do I deal with negative comments on an online obituary?

If you encounter negative comments on an online obituary, try not to engage with them directly. Instead, report inappropriate comments to the platform administrator or moderator for removal. Focus on celebrating the deceased person's life and legacy instead of responding to negativity.

Can I create a memorial webpage for my loved one?

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Writing an obituary can be emotionally challenging, especially when dealing with grief. Take your time, gather support from loved ones if needed, and focus on celebrating the deceased person's life rather than dwelling on your own emotions.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's passing and providing basic biographical information. A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service that shares personal anecdotes and memories of the deceased person.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template?

You can use existing templates as inspiration or guidance when writing an obituary. However, it's essential to customize the content to fit your loved one's unique life story and personality.

How do I know what tone to use when writing an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should reflect the deceased person's personality and spirit. Aim for sincerity, respectfulness, and authenticity when sharing their story with others.
