Martin J. "Hap" Finestead, Jr. - April 15, 1922 - May 04, 2024

Departed: 05/04/2024 (Des Moines)
Obituary Preview: Hap Finestead, 102, died May 4, 2024, at Wesley on Grand in Des Moines. A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, May 9, at 11:00 a.m., at West Des Moines Christian Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the church, with lunch served immediately following the service, and burial in the Woodward Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
“Hap” earned his nickname in junior high and he carried his genuinely “Hap”py outlook throughout all of his 102 years.
Hap was born to Martin and Hazel (Hurst) Finestead, Sr. in Granger on April 15, 1922, the fourth of five children. He graduated from Granger High School in 1939. Hap married Virginia Harker of Woodward on December 20, 1941. They were the parents of one son, Thomas Finestead.
Following graduation, he farmed with his dad until he started farming on his own at age 22. After 20 years, Hap retired from farming and purchased a grocery store in Granger (Hap’s A.G.) which Hap and Virginia operated for 10 years before retiring. After a short retirement period, they decided to go back to work. Hap’s final 10-year employment venture was as an electrician at Camp Dodge, retiring for a final time in 1984. In addition to paying positions, Hap was a woodworker and jack of all trades. He was the chief jigsaw operator for all the craft items made by the ladies of the Granger Christian Church, and no repair job was too large or too small for him. All you had to do was ask.
Hap spent most of his life in the Granger area, less than two miles from the home where he was born. His wife, Virginia, died in 1996. In 2000, at age 77, Hap married Juanita (Russell) Kinkade, and moved to Urbandale for 19 years, then The Lodge of Ashworth in West Des Moines for 5 years before moving to Wesley on Grand in Des Moines.
Hap is survived by his wife Juanita, son Tom (Jo) Finestead of Henderson, Nevada; granddaughter, Natasha Finestead of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandson Nathan Finestead of West Des Moines; step granddaughter Mindi (Floyd) Shepherd of Des Moines; great grandson, Preston Oddo, of Scottsdale, and sister, Bette (Rollie) Strutz, of Great Falls, Montana. Also surviving are his stepchildren, Bruce (Mary Ann) Kinkade of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, step daughter-in-law Kathy Kinkade (Garrett) Young of Minnetonka, Minnesota, stepdaughters Diane (Jeff) Fox of Des Moines, and Dayna (Dave Clark) Kinkade of Long Beach, California; 13 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Virginia, brother Lowell, and sisters Gladys Roth and Georgia Wilson, step-grandson Chad Decker, and stepson, Scott Kinkade.
Memorials may be made to West Des Moines Christian Church, Wesley on Grand Good Samaritan Fund, or Wesley on Grand Hospice.

Sharon A. Murphy - April 15, 1943 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Des Moines)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Ann Murphy, 80, died peacefully on April 11, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on April 15, 1943 to Edwin and Dorothy Duren in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Sharon was bit of an imp as a little girl. But that imp evolved and, as a teenager, who loved to dress up and carry herself like a queen, Sharon earned the nick name Queenie and developed a certain poise. She was very sharp and insightful about the people who entered her world, and supportive of her siblings—brothers Gary and Brian and sisters Debbie and DeeDee—as they confronted life’s challenges. After graduating from Alexander Ramsey High School in Roseville, Minnesota, she moved to Des Moines and attended Drake University.
Sharon married, became the mother of Heidi, John, and James, and years later, wife to John Murphy, the love of her life. She was blessed with and grateful for the love of her Murphy Family. During their 38-year marriage, Sharon and John were dedicated to the love and care of one another, their family, and friends, celebrating holidays, the marriages of their children and the births of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sharon and John traveled extensively and, for a few years, wintered in Palm Springs with friends Bob and Kay. Special memories include hosting their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade gathering on their parade bus and celebrating Thanksgiving every year with Sharon’s siblings, nieces, and nephews in Minnesota. Sharon and John were long-time, active members of St. Theresa Catholic Church. They were blessed by many lasting friendships, especially with those in their faith community. They lived a life of service to God, family and friends. In Sharon’s words, “I’ve lived a good life … it was just perfect!”
Sharon was a devoted mother and was always there to lend a hand, talk, or just listen. Through her example, her children learned courage, kindness and compassion. “Grammy” loved hosting sleepovers, playing cards, watching movies, and hiking through the woods with her grandchildren, and everyone LOVED her lemon bars!!! We are eternally grateful for her and all she gave so lovingly.
She had a unique sense of style and did everything with beauty and grace. A gracious hostess who loved to entertain, she had a knack for decorating her warm, beautiful home. She was a passionate, life-long learner, always reading, changing, and growing. Soft-spoken and poised, she possessed a quiet strength and determination. Her life was a beautiful example of faith, service, resiliency and courage.
Sharon will be lovingly remembered by her husband John, children Heidi Koll (Chris), John Roehrick (Jill), James Roehrick (Rhonda) and step-daughter Sally Wingfield (Steve); 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and her Murphy family. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant daughter Holly Marie.

Roberta Pyle - December 13, 1928 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Des Moines)
Obituary Preview: Roberta Pyle departed this life peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2024 at Wesley on Grand in Des Moines, Iowa. A visitation will be held at Iles Funeral Home Westover Chapel in Des Moines on Sunday, April 14 from 3:00 - 5:00pm with a program at 4:30pm. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 15 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 10:00am (lunch to follow). A private burial service is planned for a later date.
Roberta was born on December 13, 1928 in Neola, Iowa to Joseph and Veronica Kenealy. Her parents chose Neola in which to raise their children because it offered a Catholic school. Roberta graduated from St. Joseph High School and then attended Ottumwa Heights College. Her first job was with Mutual Benefit in Omaha. While there, on a blind date, Roberta met Neil Pyle, the love of her life. When a great-granddaughter recently asked her the age she’d desire to relive, Roberta responded, “Twenty-one years old - when I was newly married to Neil.” Together they raised six children in the Beaverdale neighborhood. Roberta was a woman of unwavering faith and while following its teachings, she shared her religion with her family because she desired this same path in life for them. This provided both guidance and comfort in her life and theirs. Her rosary beads were always close at hand. Her garden provided flowers for her May Altar. And her children will remember her favorite saying in times of turmoil, “Offer it up!”
As a mother, she was selfless, patient, nurturing, and forgiving. Slow to judge, she rarely raised her voice. She also had a high threshold for the normal chaos associated with having many children underfoot - the kitchen table covered with crayons and homework, sofa cushions and blankets arranged into tents, and bikes and balls strewn around the yard.
Roberta was content to work in her flower garden, read a good book or play the piano. She spent her free time canning tomatoes in the heat of the Iowa summers and knitted or crocheted during the winter months. In retirement, Roberta and Neil looked forward to “shelling” on Sanibel Island, Florida, attending their grandchildren’s school and sporting events, and hosting numerous family holiday gatherings.
A strong woman of Irish descent, Roberta lived each day with courage and grace as the matriarch of an equally strong extended family. After Neil’s passing years ago, she was determined to maintain the large home they loved. She deemed it important to keep the family connected both with her and with each other through phone calls, thank you notes and birthday cards, all the while, keeping abreast of her family’s travels and activities.
Roberta is survived by her six children Diane (Chuck) Freeman, Steve (Patti) Pyle, Kathy (Jim) Simmons, Julie (Dave) Williams, Mike (Stephanie) Pyle and Sheila Sargent, 14 grandchildren and two step grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren and brother Tim (June) Kenealy. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, brothers Vince and Richard Kenealy, sister Margaret Ann Kenealy and step grandson Luke Simmons.
The family would like to thank all of the loving caregivers at Home Instead, Woodlands Creek and Wesley on Grand. One of Roberta’s granddaughters described her this way: “Grandma had the most pure-of-hearts ever. She desired nothing more than to be with God. We believe that she has been welcomed home by His loving words: ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.’”

Dennis "Doc Savage" Hurley - November 20, 1937 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Des Moines)
Obituary Preview: Dennis “Doc Savage” Hurley, a passionate bicyclist, and a loving family man, transitioned into the afterlife at age 86 on April 5th, 2024.
Known to many as Denny, he was set upon this stage on Nov. 20, 1937 in Ryan, Iowa to Francis and Lucille Chambers Hurley.
After a few jobs, he settled into a career as a real estate appraiser, assessing mostly commercial and industrial properties. He worked for Vanguard Appraisals in Cedar Rapids for 33 years.
He met his loving wife, Shirley, while out dancing several decades ago. And even though initially she thought he was obnoxious, the pair were married on October 12th, 1957 and were married for more than 66 years. They didn’t dance much, but they could triple time with the best with their form of the jitterbug.
Dennis and Shirley resided in the “Painted Lady,” a beautiful Victorian home in Perry for 34 years, hosting dozens of holiday gatherings while their children and grandkids played basketball in the driveway. The house was also known as the place to go on Halloween where popcorn balls were handed out to 400-500 kids and parents every year.
They moved to Des Moines in 2004, living in Beaverdale for nearly 20 years. At 60 years old, Dennis played golf in England, came home and never played again… it’s remained a family mystery ever since… DID SOMETHING HAPPEN OVER THERE?
Dennis played organized basketball until the age of 66, winning several gold medals playing senior ball. He loved playing games on his backyard court, always holding homecourt advantage.
In 1973 he decided to try his hand at detasseling corn. In the beginning it was a small crew with just family members but then it grew and for the next 25 years with help from Shirley, her sister Margie Pope, and his son’s Scott and Jim, they ran large crews out of Coon Rapids, Ottumwa, and even one year in Kansas.
If you knew Dennis, he was always ready to insert a bit of sarcasm and a wisecrack, but he also had a softer side. He volunteered at the St. Mary’s Food Pantry on 18th and East Grand in Des Moines, for 20 years after he retired, a block from where he grew up. An old neighborhood buddy would pick him up at 8 a.m. They’d go to the local Hy-Vee, load up with yesterday’s bakery items, and take them to the pantry. They’d work until 12:30 and then four of them would go to lunch. When his son Craig retired, he joined Dennis at the pantry. He also helped cook breakfast for the Moulton School kids until they finally shut it down.
He went to school at St. Peter’s, which was only two blocks from the food pantry. His class was small with ten girls and eleven boys. In 1999, he got seven of the boys together for breakfast once a month. The group slowly dwindled to the three amigos until their fireman friend passed, leaving only two at the table, Dennis and his food pantry buddy, Jim Shea.
After grade school he attended Dowling High School when it was an all-boys school, graduating with the Class of 1956. Up until a month ago he was still getting together with his some of his Dowling buddies for breakfast once a month.
He always looked forward to inviting several friends and relatives over for a backyard fire, hot dogs, and cigars. During the warm summer months, he’d make malts, sundaes, or occasionally, banana splits for dessert. You could always find Dennis sitting in his swivel chair smoking his social cigar and feeding the fire.
Though he went skydiving only once, it was something he was able to cross off his bucket list.
Dennis was notorious for connecting specific words with some of his favorite songs. Shirley would say a word or two and it would remind him of a part of a song, and he would sing it, which would happen quite often.
Dennis and Jim Walstrom were the co-founders of BRR, the annual Bike Ride to Rippey, a yearly 24-mile trek on the first Saturday in February. The event started on February 6th, 1978, when the pair wanted to host the “coldest day of the year bike ride,” hoping to generate money for the Perry Chamber of Commerce. He never missed an opportunity to visit the baked potato bar at the United Methodist Church in Rippey, marking the halfway point of the ride. The last time he rode BRR was in 2021 at the age of 83.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley and their four children, Craig (Karen) Hurley, Theresa (Mike) Schall, Jim (Lisa) Hurley, and Scott (Stephanie) Hurley. He’s also survived by his grandchildren; Bryant (Allie) Hurley, Cassie (Jon) Galloway, Ryan and Rachel Schall, Brandon, Jeremey, Nathan, and Jacob Hurley, Emerson Hurley, Frances and Audrey McFarland. and his great-grandchildren; Presley, Charlotte, and Hadley Galloway, Caiden Hurley, Hunter and Cameron Hurley, and his brother Ken. He was preceded in death by his mother Lucille, his father Francis, his brothers Frank, Dick, Bill, and his sister Pat.
Visitation will be at the Iles Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, IA 50322, on Wednesday, April 10, from 5:00-7:00, with a small service and the sharing of memories at 7:00. The funeral will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2926 Beaver Ave, Des Moines, IA 50310, on Thursday, April 11, at 10:00. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary's Food Pantry or to the family for a memorial bench on a bike trail near Perry. Contributions may be sent to the Dennis Hurley Family at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa 50322

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with friends, family, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important details about their passing. They help notify others of the death, share funeral or memorial service information, and provide a sense of closure for those who are grieving.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but it's usually between 100-500 words. The key is to strike a balance between providing enough information and avoiding unnecessary details.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the obituary and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find guidelines on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Absolutely! While it's common to write an obituary shortly after someone passes away, there's no time limit for writing one. You can still write an obituary for someone who died years ago as a way to honor their memory and share their story.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like their name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the deceased person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes! Including humorous anecdotes or personality traits can help make the obituary more engaging and reflective of the person's true spirit.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including certain details in an obituary, such as the cause of death or sensitive personal information, it's best to err on the side of caution and consult with family members or close friends before publishing.

Can I write an obituary for a pet?

Absolutely! Many people consider their pets to be beloved family members, and writing an obituary can be a meaningful way to acknowledge their passing and celebrate their life.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit your local library to access old newspapers on microfilm. Some websites also offer searchable databases of historical obituaries.

Can I reuse an existing obituary?

If you need to publish an obituary in multiple places (e.g., online and in print), you can reuse the same text. However, be sure to check with each publication for any specific formatting or content guidelines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge several hundred dollars.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform where the obituary was published. Some may allow edits or corrections, while others may not. Be sure to review your obituary carefully before submitting it for publication.

What if I need to make corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible to request corrections. They may be able to make changes or issue a correction notice.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and personality to an obituary.

How do I ensure my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

By sharing stories, memories, and accomplishments in the obituary, you can help keep your loved one's legacy alive for generations to come.

Can I write an advance obituary for myself?

Yes! Writing your own advance obituary can be a therapeutic exercise that helps you reflect on your life and values. Just be sure to store it safely and let your loved ones know where to find it when the time comes.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Taking care of yourself during this difficult time is essential. Consider reaching out to a trusted friend or family member for support, or seeking guidance from a professional counselor or bereavement specialist.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

How do I share an online obituary with others?

You can share online obituaries via social media platforms, email, or messaging apps. You can also provide a link to the obituary on funeral home websites or memorial pages.
