Obituary Preview: Nicholas Edward Perez, Des Moines, Iowa.
Nick, 26, was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 3, 1997, and passed from this life on May 3, 2024. He graduated from Ankeny High School in 2016. Nick was a member of the local 234, where he achieved a dream of operating heavy equipment, and then found that moving dirt wasn’t fast enough for him, so he had recently joined Vincent General Contracting, working with his best friend, Zach. Nick was a hard worker from a young age.
He loved his friends and family and his dog, Lefty. Nick enjoyed the small things in life, had a huge heart, and had your back if you needed him. When Nick wasn’t working hard, he was playing hard. Whether on a bike, in his truck on a late-night drive with Baylea, in a shop, working around the house, catching fish, or teaching Kash one thing or another, he was always close to those he loved. Nick always lit up any room he was in, his infectious laugh and smile were contagious, and his presence was always known and will continue to be known and felt by those that know and love him.
Nick is survived by his girlfriend, Baylea Polito, and her son, Kash. Also left to mourn are his mother, Ronda (Rob) Wheeler, of Ankeny; sister, Carmen, of Ankeny; brother, Mateo, of Burlington; “Grandma Concha” and aunts, Mimi and Penny, all of San Diego, California; his grandparents, Ron and Joyce Schmidt, of Pleasantville, and many other loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Catherine Cathy Kubik - April 12, 1942 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (Des Moines)
Obituary Preview: Catherine Mae (Phillips) Kubik, daughter of Robert Phillips and Mary (Farlow) Phillips, was born April 12, 1942 in Winterset, Iowa. She passed away peacefully May 3, 2024 with her daughters at her side at Traditions Memory Care in Newton, Iowa at the age of 82.
She had a passion for life, her flower gardens, and decorating for every holiday inside and out. Catherine had many pets with Boots being her final one. He was such a beautiful well-behaved dog. Catherine was able to keep Boots with her when she lived at Courtyard Estates until it was too difficult to care for him on her own. Danny took Boots into his home to love and care for him in Catherine’s stead.
Catherine loved beautiful clothes, jewelry, and perfume. She also loved to sing and was in many different choirs over the years. She has a beautiful singing voice. Of course, we cannot forget Catherine’s need for speed! She lived in many places over the years, but settled mostly in Madison & Clarke County. Her last house was in Osceola, Iowa. She made it a home with all of her beautiful flowers. Her final place of residence was Traditions Memory Care where the staff loved her. She was so proud of her grandkids and she supported them in any activities they were in.
She had many jobs over the years selling Avon & Mary Kay, waitressing, Sears Credit Card, etc. The job she was best at was being the activities director for Long Term Care in the Clarke County Hospital.
Catherine is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mary Phillips and her niece Julie Phillips. She is survived by her 3 children Debbie Frey of Des Moines, Becky (Todd) Sexton Collins, and Danny Keys of Ft Wayne, Indiana, 8 grandchildren, Sherrie Gilbert, Cheryl (Adam) Lilland, Ashley Gilbert, Reymond Music, Chelsea (Josh) Claude, Ryan Kooiker, Courtney (Garrett) Husske, and Bekka Keys, 4 great-grandchildren Logan Lilland, Devon Lilland, Zander Wyman, and Charlotte Claude, her sister Elizabeth Woods, brother Denny Pillips, and many other family and friends.
She will be truly missed by many. We are not sure how the staff at Traditions will fill the void without their sassy ornery resident Miss Cathy.
A celebration of life will be held on May 10, 2024 at Collins Community Center, 219 Main Street, Collins, IA 50055. The visitation will be held from 2:00PM - 4:00PM, May 10, 2024. The service will begin at 4:00PM. The family will gather for stories, refreshments, and eating following the service.
At the request of the family, please come to the service in the brightest attire you own. No funeral clothing please. Cathy was a vibrant, bright color kind of lady. Please join the family in celebrating her beautiful life.

Obituary Preview: Carroll Laverne Brewer, son of James and Alice (Bowman) Brewer was born on June 30, 1928, in Grimes IA. Carroll passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
Carroll served in the Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952 as a Corporal in the Korean War. In 1950 he served at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea, Easy Company, 2nd Battalion 1st Marine Division. Mr. Brewer was proud to have served his country.
Carroll, a dedicated worker with a strong work ethic, retired from American Freight Company in 1988. Carroll reminisced often about his fondness for his profession, sharing stories with family and friends of days past.
In a quaint log cabin church in Branson, Missouri, Carroll and Beverly Gooden exchanged vows on June 30, 1992. Carroll cleverly chose his birth date for their wedding day as it was a way never to forget their anniversary. Together, they explored the Lake of the Ozarks, creating cherished memories.
Carroll's passions were diverse. He often strummed melodies, embracing the tunes of country music. Artists like Vince Gill, George Strait, the Eagles, and George Jones were among some of his favorites. Many summers he enjoyed time at Saylorville Lake on the family's first boat named "Miss Nicole.” One of his greatest loves was reserved for the loyal companions who wagged their tails and dogs who shared his life's journey. And then there was football, the thrill of the game. Carroll's excitement could not be contained when Tom Brady took the field for the New England Patriots. He was a loyal fan.
Carroll's finest traits were kindness, humor, and generosity. He thoroughly loved spending time with his great-grandchildren. He beamed from one ear to the other when he had the chance to spend time with them. As the years passed and he witnessed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow older, he beamed with pride and joy. He will be missed by all.
We are grateful that he was able to watch his family prosper and that he witnessed both of his granddaughter's weddings, he was blessed beyond measure with six beautiful great grandchildren that he adored. He celebrated his 95th milestone birthday with family and friends in 2023.
Carroll's family includes his wife, Beverly, two daughters: Michele “Shelly” (Bill) Cheek and Teresa Brewer, granddaughters Nicole (Jake) Burkhart and Lauren (Clint) Pickering, great grandchildren, Luke, Madelyn, Zack, Ben, Mackenzie and Waylon, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Des Moines)
Obituary Preview: Ronald “Ronnie” Ray Reed passed away on March 8th, 2024, as his organs, bones, and joints could no longer keep up with his head and loving heart.
Ronnie was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Harold and Mary Jane Reed on February 6th, 1957, and was welcomed into the world by his sister Elaine Reed. He was blessed with children Jade Micheal Reed (Candace) and Lacey Rae Reed. Later in life, Ronnie found more blessings with his son Matthew Wayne Reed (Amanda) and daughter Rebecca Sarah Toubes. Ronnie worked hard in his career as a brick and block layer, starting in his Dad’s business, Reed Masonry, and later working for M&M Masonry. Ronnie balanced his hard work with lots of “Fun loves” throughout his life. He enjoyed swimming and water skiing while camping with his family, then moved on to riding snowmobiles and motocross racing at the age of 15, where his fearless attitude and winning habit earned him a full-ride sponsorship from Garvis Honda Town and numerous top-placing trophies. He also had a passion for fishing and boating, activities he enjoyed from an early age with his Dad. Ronnie loved searching for rocks, arrowheads, and primitive stone tools, perhaps because they never disagreed with him or told him what to do!
A celebration of life will be held at the Ding Darling shelter house in Birdland Park, Des Moines, this Friday, March 29th, from 4-8 pm. Family and close friends are encouraged to join. Instead of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation to Ronnie’s After-life fund to help his family with his headstone.
