Joseph "Joe" Henry Gruenwald - August 14, 1949 - February 05, 2022

Departed: 02/05/2022 (Redfield)
Obituary Preview: Joseph "Joe" Henry Gruenwald, 72, of Warner, SD, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Avantara Redfield.  His wishes were to be cremated with a private family committal service at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Zell, SD. Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield, SD has been entrusted with arrangements. (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
Joseph was born August 14, 1949, in Aberdeen, SD to Jerome and Carolyn (Moeller) of Zell, SD. He grew up on a family farm outside of Zell with his 14 siblings. As a child, Joe helped out on the family farm: milking cows, raising pigs and chickens, and tending to a large garden. As a teen, he worked at Harry’s Egg Station in Redfield.
After an older brother, Michael, was killed in action in the Vietnam War in 1969, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a MPC with the 504 Company and served honorably until 1971. After returning home to South Dakota, he married Teresa Palmer in Zell in August.
Joe’s career as “The Meat Man” started soon after. He was taught how to cut meat from his father-in-law, Dean Palmer; and lived and worked cutting meat in Mellette and Doland, SD and later in Park River, ND where he worked at Dwayne’s Jack & Jill. In 1974, he and Teresa moved to Cleveland, OH for more opportunity and worked for Fazio’s Costa (Fisher Food) supermarkets.
Returning to South Dakota in 1979, Joe worked as a meat cutter for Dean’s Jack & Jill in Redfield, and eventually for other owners of that same grocery store. He also would apprentice other “meat-men” over that time. In 1996, Joe moved to Aberdeen, then Warner, and worked at Kessler’s grocery store as a full and part-time meat cutter and as a maintenance technician for a few years at the Federal Building in Aberdeen.
Joe had a love for gardening, canning anything, cooking, fishing, and deer and pheasant hunting. He delighted in showing off his latest project, teaching people how to can, and giving away his garden vegetables or his canned pickles, jam, or salsa. Music was ever present in Joe’s life. Listening to music from Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, and other music from the 60s and 70s gave him the most peace. Joe was also a member of the Volunteer Mellette and Redfield Fire Departments.
Joseph is survived by his children, Amy (Rick) Ochs, Jaime (Perlita) Gruenwald, Melissa (David) Krueger, Mindy (Ryan) Foltz, Jesse Gruenwald, and Joshua Gruenwald, along with 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his companion, Ruby Wallace. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Francis Gruenwald, Michael Gruenwald, Margaret Owen, Jean Wallman, Irene Amundson, and brothers-in-law: Dick Rice and Pete Wurtz.

Hyke Funeral Home - December 31, 2021 - January 03, 2022

Departed: 01/03/2022 (Redfield)
Obituary Preview: We have been informed about an online site, "Echovita", publishing obituaries and has been set up to accept flower and tree orders for grieving families. However, to our knowledge, the families never receive any orders, the money is lost, and the obituary information is incorrect.  Please be wary and use the information published through the funeral home which each family has authorized.  The National Funeral Directors Association has issued the following statement: ADVISORY CONCERNING UNAUTHORIZED OBITUARY WEBSITE
We want to alert you that a Canadian company operating under the name of Echovita.com is engaged in pirating obituaries from newspapers and funeral home websites.  Echovita.com revises the wording of the pirated obituaries to avoid copyright infringement lawsuits and then posts them on its website.  When members of the public do an online search for a particular obituary, the website comes up with the obituary and includes offers to sell flowers, virtual candles, and memorial tree plantings.  In essence, Echovita is using the deaths of loved ones to draw traffic to its website in the hope of selling products.
Our funeral home has no connection, financial or otherwise, to Echovita.com.  Currently, there are no laws that prevent Echovita from taking the information from online websites and posting their own obituaries using that information.  If you hear from friends and family members regarding Echovita.com, you may want to warn them that you have not authorized Echovita to post the obituary of your loved one.
Not only is Echovita.com engaged in deception, it is also not very good at reporting accurate information.  The algorithms used by Echovita.com to modify obituaries are not foolproof and misinformation regarding names of the decedent or relatives, or the times, places and dates of funeral services are often found in online obituaries.
Obituaries that appear on Echovita.com may be corrected or removed at the request of family members.  When the obituary appears on the website, a family member may click a box entitled “Report this Obituary”.  The family would then be given an option to edit the page by correcting the misinformation or directing Echovita to remove the obituary.  Echovita warns that it may take up to three business days before the obituary is removed.
Many funeral homes, nationally and locally, and the families they serve have been targeted by this site.

Larry Gene Trygstad - September 20, 1950 - December 31, 2021

Departed: 12/31/2021 (Redfield)
Obituary Preview: Larry Gene Trygstad went to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully from his home on December 31st, 2021. Services will be held at a later time when the warmer winds can bring us together.  Condolences may be sent to Dixie Jungwirth at 417 E. 1st Street, Redfield, SD 57469 and/or Teresa Ruckman at 81 CR 4021A, Dayton, TX 77535.  Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield has been entrusted with arrangements.  (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
Larry was born on September 20th, 1950, in Houston, Texas, to Lawrence and Adele (Olsen) Trygstad. He was the 7th of 9 children in their family. Larry loved telling stories about his big family and growing up in Houston. Some of his fondest memories were of his family taking road trips all over the country. He would often say, "I don't know how Mama did it!" Family was always a top priority and he continued throughout his life to travel to see family. In June of 2021, he made his last trip to Texas to see his brothers and sisters. He knew his time was near and he was grateful to get to say good-bye.
After attending Sam Houston High School, Larry married Doris May and to their union they welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Teresa Lynette on July 25th, 1969. Life took Doris and Larry in different directions, and Larry's sense of adventure, and somewhat free spirit, drew him to start a trek to Alaska. He decided he would stop in North Dakota where his grandparents had lived, and thought it was a good place to make some money for his trip.
Shortly after his arrival, he met Rita Marie Grammond from Forman, ND. He realized she was pretty special and he shouldn't let her go, so after a short courtship, they were married on May 6th, 1974. Larry and Rita made their home in their beloved Rutland, ND, where they made many close friends and were able to spend time with family. They welcomed their firecracker, Dixie Lee, on July 4th, 1979. Larry missed his Texas family, so they packed up and moved to Sargent, TX in 1982. They found work where it was available and spent much time at the beach and finding the best fishing spots. Larry's father moved to Sargent and lived with them. The time that their family got to spend with him was cherished.
In 1987, Larry and Rita decided to return to Rutland, ND, and a few years later Rita started a career in Britton, SD. The family moved to Britton, and Larry started his own business, Nu-Way Roofing. Larry would never admit it, but he was somewhat a savant when it came to building and fixing things. He started young, learning about the building trades by reading a book his brother, Bill, gave him. It fascinated him and he could picture it in his mind. Eventually he learned everything he needed to know to build a home from start to finish. He was also very mechanically inclined and could fix pretty much everything. He would travel to ND, MN, and TX to do work for relatives. When the internet came along, he would research for hours and soak up as much information as he could. In these last few years, if something broke down, he would tell you, "Go to YouTube, type in the make, model, and serial number, and what is wrong. It will tell you what you need to do." Many of you probably got some similar advice.
Eventually, Larry decided it was time to let someone else be in charge. He closed down his business and went to work for Max Davidson Plumbing and Heating. He really enjoyed his co-workers there and teaching other people how to fix things. He worked for Max until a decline in his health no longer made it safe. He missed them very much. Larry and Rita went their separate ways, and Larry had grown hateful of the long, cold winters. He decided in 2010 to return to Sargent, TX, and spend his retirement doing fix-it jobs for less fortunate people, fishing and spending time with family and friends. While in Sargent, Larry met and married Talitha Trygstad in a beautiful ceremony on the beach. They enjoyed worshiping together, helping others, sitting on the porch, and spending time with friends and family. Larry's health had declined even further, and Talitha did the best she could to take care of him, but eventually they grew apart. In February of 2020, at the very beginning of the pandemic, Larry made the decision he said he never would, and came back to the cold north so his daughter could help care for him. While here, he enjoyed time with his family at family dinners and holidays. His granddaughters appreciated getting to know their grandpa a little better. He had a cozy, comfortable little apartment and everything he needed.
Those of us that knew and loved Larry should take comfort in knowing he will be right there waiting for us with his huge smile, belly laugh, a few new stories to share, and a great big hug. His heart was giving, his mind was exceptional, and his love was unconditional. Know you were loved and honor his memory by showing kindness to others, just as he would.
Larry is watching over his daughters: Teresa (Steve) Ruckman, of Dayton, TX, and Dixie (Daryl) Jungwirth, of Redfield, SD; his grandchildren: Jake (Shyanne) Johnston, Elizabeth (Travis) Honeycutt, Samuel Ruckman and fiance' Erin Gates, JR Ruckman and fiance' Mia Fink, Timothy Ruckman, Bella Hartman, and Hope Hartman; and his great-grandchildren Evalyn, Kenton, Thompson, Azalea, and Dahlea. He is also survived by his sisters: Marolyn (Ed) Blaire, of Houston, TX, Diane (David) Jans, of League City, TX, and Shannon "Susie" Ricles, Newport News, VA; two brothers: Bill (Trinh) Walls, of Houston, TX, and Mark Trygstad of Lake Jackson, TX: and one aunt, Nila (Bud) Carpenter, of Minneapolis, MN. Larry was blessed with too many nieces, nephews, and cousins to list and he loved each and every one of them. He also had many close friendships with people from TX, ND, and SD that will miss him greatly. He also continued to have love in his heart for Doris, Rita, and Talitha.
He couldn't wait to be reunited in Heaven with his Dad and Mom, his brother Buddy, sisters Marie and Nila, grandson Christian, nephew Bubba, and his many aunts and uncles, some cousins, and many friends.

Shirley's daughters have each written an obituary to honor their mother and the memories they cherish. Written by June Ohm:
Shirley Jean Stoner was born March 9, 1923 to Neva (Seaton) and Jesse Stoner in South English, Iowa. She had 3 older sisters, Eileen, Lillian, and Charlotte. 6 months later, Neva died but she had already put Shirley into the care of Richard and Lena Stoner – Jesse's brother and wife. Shirley's new family included a brother, Wayne, and sister, Harriette.
The family moved to South Dakota and lived in various places in the Redfield, Athol, Orient area. Papa Jesse died when Shirley was 6 years old.
Lena and Richard's family always seemed to have extra people living with them. Grandma Lulu Stoner lived with them several years until her death in 1940. She passed on her love of gardening to Shirley and left her with many good memories.
While living in the Redfield area, Shirley made friends with Mary Schalkle. She remembers going to church with Mary and her parents.
Shirley graduated from high school in Athol, SD. She went to college for one year at Northern in Aberdeen, SD. She taught at a country school. Years later, one of her former students told her that they had always hated school until they had her as a teacher.
She was introduced to Raymond Sanger by mutual friends. They got married June 21, 1944 and lived on the family farm 3 miles west of Rockham, SD. 5 children, June, Janice, Charles, Beverly and Randy were born to them.
She taught Sunday School at the Rockham Methodist Church for many years. She and Ray were both active in church activities. They especially enjoyed Young Adults.
The two of them were also 4-H leaders for many years – Shirley was very proud of that, made good friends and certainly had an impact on many young lives.
Shirley worked at Betten's Egg Plant for a few years. During that time, the farm was sold and the family moved into Redfield.
Shirley worked at both the Community hospital and the Developmental Center for may years. She got to be the person the doctor handed her first grandson, Robert Ohm, when he was born prematurely.
Shirley and Ray moved to a home at Cottonwood Lake for several years then to a home in Zell. Ray died in August, 1987. She stayed at the house in Zell and continued to care for other people over the years.
Eventually she moved to the Village in Redfield. She played Whist with an organized group for many years. She also enjoyed playing pinochle at the Sr Citizen center. She enjoyed activities at the United Methodist church and visiting with friends. She also enjoyed going to Creative Arts Guild with some of her family members and always enjoyed family time.
In February 2020 Shirley moved to Good Samaritan home in Miller, SD. She will be remembered by those who knew her as being very appreciative of everything people did for her and being that friendly smile and greeting at the front door.
Shirley is survived by children; June and Ronald Ohm, Charles and Diane Sanger, Beverly and Travis Letsche, Zenaida Sanger. 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, her parents, sister, brother, son-in-law Lawrie Samelson, daughter, Janice Davies.
Shirley and youngest son, Randy passed away very close to the same time. Written by Beverly Letsche:
Shirley Sanger passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Center in Miller, South Dakota, surrounded by the love of all who knew her, on December 13, 2021.
Shirley was born the youngest of four sisters on March 9, 1923, to Jesse and Neva (Seaton) Stoner at South English, Iowa.  When Shirley was just a few months old, Neva, who had not recovered from child birth, chose to give Shirley over to the care of Jesse’s brother, Richard, and his wife, Lena and their children, Wayne and Harriette. Neva died when Shirley was just six months old. Shirley delighted in confusing people by having a sister, Harriette, who was cousin to Shirley’s three sisters, Eileen, Lillian, and Charlotte. A month before Shirley’s seventh birthday, her beloved Papa, Jesse, also passed away. Despite these losses and the hardships of growing up in the Dirty Thirtys, Shirley enjoyed her childhood, feeling loved, and maybe just a little spoiled by her parents Richard and Lena, siblings, Papa Jesse, stepmother Julia, Grandma Lulu and Uncle Horace.
When Shirley was still a baby the family moved from Iowa to South Dakota. They lived on various farms around the Redfield area and surrounding towns. One of her clearest childhood memories was when she was just two and her grandfather Solomon Stoner died. As was the custom at the time the body was laid out in the parlor. She remembers creeping down the stairs, clinging to the wall to stay as far away from the casket as possible.
She graduated from Athol High School in 1941. She attended Northern State Teachers College for a year, obtaining her teaching certificate. Shirley taught two years at a country school north of Rockham. The girls at her school would swoon when Shirley’s handsome and romantic suitor, Ray Sanger, would ride his horse to visit her, waiting patiently on the hillside above the school until classes let out.
June 21, 1944 Shirley and Ray were married in Orient, South Dakota. They moved an old hotel on to Ray’s parents’ farm. There they produced five children; June, Janice, Charles (Chuck), Beverly and Randy. Shirley contributed a lot to the family earning by growing a huge garden, canning and preserving the produce, and caring for the chicken flock.
Shirley continued to substitute teach when needed in the area. She and Ray became very active 4-H leaders. They were very progressive, combining the girls and boys clubs into one club which was unheard of at the time. They both taught classes at the local and county level and judged at Faulk County Achievement Days.
Shirley was also active in the Rockham United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible School. She participated in the church women’s groups plus in Extension Club.
When Randy started school, Shirley went to work in Redfield at Harry’s Station. In 1964, Ray and Shirley moved their family to Redfield. There Shirley held various jobs including working at Redfield State Hospital and School, and the community hospital. They moved to Cottonwood Lake for several years before moving to Zell. During those years she and Ray enjoyed doing traveling, gardening and various handicrafts. She retired early from RSHS to care for Ray, who had health problems. Ray died in 1987.
After Ray’s death, Shirley returned to work as a home health care aide and enjoyed doing more traveling, quilting and card playing. Eventually she and her beloved cat, Lucy, moved to the Village in Redfield, where Shirley enjoyed an active social life. On January 31, 2020 she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Miller where she lived until her death.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, her parents and her siblings and their spouses and her son-in-law, Lawrie Samelson, daughter, Janice and son, Randy. Left behind to cherish her memory are her children June (Ron) Ohm, Redfield; Chuck (Diane) Sanger, Mobridge; Beverly (Travis) Letsche, St. Lawrence; daughter-in-law Zenaida Sanger, San Marcos, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you to the participants in the Sanger's service: Clergy:  Pastor Melissa Rowenhorst and Pastor Jim Hofman Organist:  Lynette Munce Flint Soloist:  Larry Tebben Pallbearers ~ Shirley's Grandchildren: Bob Ohm, Rich Ohm, Brenda Merkel, Mark Ohm, Brian Davies, Cara Davies, Kevin Davies, Alan Davies, Travis Sanger, Beverly Custodio, Jeanny Sanger, Jill McKewan, Tanya Davies Military Honors for Randy: Clay Kiser American Legion Post #92 - Redfield, SD Paul A. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They also provide a sense of closure and allow people to pay their respects to the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide accurate and meaningful information about their life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's death, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides a summary of the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and whether it includes photos or other features. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the final version.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to make the obituary publicly available, you can opt for a private or restricted viewing option on some online platforms. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Typically, expect a delay of 1-5 business days before the obituary appears in print or online.

Can I republish an obituary on social media or other websites?

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Vet your facts carefully by verifying dates, names, and other details with multiple sources whenever possible. A single error can cause unnecessary stress and confusion for loved ones.
