Patricia Rose O'Donnell Gibson - March 15, 1945 - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Watervliet)
Obituary Preview: Patricia O’Donnell Gibson passed away on April 6, 2022, after living with Alzheimer’s disease for the last five years. Patty was born on March 15, 1945, in Detroit, MI, to Pauline and Pete O’Donnell. After graduating from Rosary High in Detroit, MI, in 1963, Patty felt compelled to join the convent with the sisters of St. Dominic of Adrian, MI. Patty stayed with the Adrian Dominicans for five years, but eventually she felt called to leave and have a family of her own. In 2011, Patty wrote and published a book about this time in her life titled The Red Skirt: Memoirs of an Ex Nun.
After leaving the convent, Patty graduated with a teaching degree from Sienna Heights College and began a family with her first husband, David. They lived in Irish Hills, MI, where both Jesse and Amanda were born and Patty still has several dear friends. Patty began her long and successful career as a teacher while they lived in this area.
Patty met Louis Gibson in 1985 while singing in the Tri-County Community Choir in Addison, MI. He noticed her smile and the rest is history. They married on June 20, 1986, and moved into their home in St. Joseph, MI, shortly thereafter. Patty taught English for the St. Joseph Public Schools from 1987 until she retired in 2002. As a teacher, Patty left an impact on the lives of her students, as well as the teachers with whom she taught. She led her classroom with compassion and encouraged her students to find their voices, as she truly believed in the power of words. In 1992, Patty earned a master’s degree in English Literature from Western Michigan University. A few years later, she faced the difficulties of breast cancer and became a survivor (1998).
Patty is survived by her husband, Louis Gibson; her sister, Maureen (John) McDonald, and brother, Jim (Marlene) O’Donnell; her children, Jesse (Shona) Pentecost and Amanda (Nic) Langlois; and her step-children, Patrick (Lori) Gibson, Ann (John) Dziuba, Steve (Laura) Gibson, Ellen (Scott) Gibson-Kennedy, and Mary (Keith) Jacobsen. In addition, Patty is survived by her and Lou’s combined 15 grandchildren: Seth, Olivia, Sam, Spencer, Mary, Ryan, Josie, Megan, Finn, Neil, Cooper, Elena, Riley, Maeve, and Penny.
In 2001, Patty and Lou moved to their lake home on Paw Paw Lake in Watervliet, MI. She spent her retirement years at the lake surrounded by all the things she loved—her garden, her book club, her kids and grandkids, her wonderful friends and husband. It was at their lake home where Patty will be remembered as an exceptional host, and an even better conversationalist. She passes down to her children and grandchildren her love of spreading great food around the table and turning up the music to spark a “clean-up dance party.” Patty cherished being a grandmother and spent hours with the kids, playing, reading, or creating an imaginary world of fun. At the end of the day, she adored watching the sunset from the porch swing, sharing stories with whomever was lucky enough to be by her side.
Patty was genuine; she taught us how to live by simply being who she was. She always found a way to laugh through the beauty and the pain, as she believed that life’s complexities were to be explored. Patty was always ready for a good trip and traveled often with her siblings, her husband, her friends, and her children. She found travel to be renewing and she immersed herself in different histories, which gave her perspective on her own life and values.
The last five years of Patty’s life were hard; Alzheimer’s took her beautiful mind from her. Lou shifted his life to be her caregiver; he spent as much time as possible by her side and created moments for the rest of us to continue to connect with her. Patty is preceded in death by her mother, Pauline O’Donnell, her father, Pete O’Donnell, and her sister, Margaret Beekman. Lou and Patty’s family would like to thank the staff and skilled nurses at Clarke Retirement at Franklin in Grand Rapids, MI, and her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Marlene O’Donnell, for helping to make her last two years in Grand Rapids comfortable.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is being planned for May 7, 2022, at 11 AM at Shadowland on Silver Beach in St. Joseph. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association on Patty’s tribute page at http://act.alz.org/goto/Patricia_Gibson.

Harold "Bud" Roger Lottridge - August 16, 1934 - January 09, 2022

Departed: 01/09/2022 (Watervliet)
Obituary Preview: Harold (Bud) Lottridge excused himself from this earthly realm quietly on January 9, 2022 in his favorite recliner, never knowing how much his loving wife of 67 years had spent on her new Sealy Posturepedic mattress.
Bud entered the world on August 16, 1934, the first child of Jack and Gladys (Hill) Lottridge (both deceased). He attended school in Watervliet k-12, playing football, basketball and baseball. His wild popularity made him the subject of many newspaper articles in which typos were made, and so was born his nickname, Bird Butt, which was a preferred moniker used by his favorite nieces—Terry, Pam and Monica—the daughters of his brother, John, who preceded him in death.
Except for the years Bud devoted to the Army from 1957-1959— being stationed at both Red Stone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL and Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland— he worked for the Watervliet Paper Mill until it shut down in the early 1990’s. He was one of the very last employees to walk out the door. If you didn’t have the pleasure of working with him at the mill, you may have been lucky enough to work with him at Turner’s Machine Shop in Coloma or have had the pleasure of being helped by him at Ace Hardware in Watervliet.
Without question, the best thing Bud ever did happened in September of 1954 when he married his high school sweetheart, Jeanette Bellenger. Had it not been for overcrowding at Coloma High School, Bud and Jeanette may never have gotten together, but in her freshman year, Coloma had 3 too many students and Jeanette came to Watervliet, where she caught the eye of a handsome sophomore. From this union came three of the most wonderful and intelligent children ever: Kimberly (Gene Butler) now living in St. Joseph, MI; Roger (Aimee Moore), residing in League City, Texas; and Mark (DeeDee Schultz) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Bud’s family remembers him as a man who had a fondness for the smell of cigars and watching a good Western, swinging on the patio while having a fun conversation, the many beautiful woodworking projects he produced in his workshop, defeating the purpose of Wii Sports by playing seated in his recliner, taking his kids fishing on Lower Scott Lake, and the screened in tree house he built for them at “the woods.” He is also remembered for his love of golf and bowling, since golf got him out of the house and bowling gave the kids a reason to play in the arcade at Coloma Lanes.
Though Bud had many passions, his favorite was his grandchildren (Kyle and Dylen Lottridge of Texas, and Willow (Rick Walker) and Levi Price of St. Joseph). Bud taught them how to operate numerous types of saws and sanders, as well as how to drive a riding lawn mower.
In addition to those mentioned above, Mr. Lottridge is survived by two very special friends, Jerry Price and Jack Turner, both from this area. His  younger sister, Judy (Herb) Kehlstrom of Racine, WI is available to tell tales of Bud in his youth, if you are interested. Ask her why she tied her brothers’ shoe laces together one afternoon while they were both at school. Besides his family, Bud was loved by 98.7% of the people who met him. He carried a smile and compassion wherever he went. His friends at the North Berrien Senior Center will miss his quick wit and willingness to let them win at cards now and then, telemarketers will miss his snark and his family will miss everything about him. As we know, when a loved one passes a certain song, a smell, even a sound sparks vivid memories of that person. For the Lottridges, a corny dad joke or a whiff of Limburger cheese will do it!
When Bud returns to his family from the crematorium, he will return to his favorite recliner until such time as a more permanent location seems appropriate.
Donations to the North Berrien Senior Center, 6648 Ryno Rd, Coloma, MI 49038 may be made in Bud’s name as a memorial. At this time, no services are planned, so celebrate him in a way that makes sense to you: smoking a cigar, eating limburger cheese. and falling asleep in your recliner would be fitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the grieving family.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing the obituary, especially if they are handling the funeral arrangements.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually shorter, ranging from 100 to 200 words. Online obituaries can be longer, often up to 500 words or more.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses for sending obituaries.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to $500 or more, while online obituaries may be free or low-cost.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated by the original author or funeral home staff.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

Online obituaries usually remain available for an extended period, sometimes indefinitely. This allows friends and family to visit and leave condolences at any time.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Yes, many online obituary platforms provide sharing options for social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. This makes it easy to notify friends and family about the passing.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a favorite cause.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of old newspapers that can be searched.

Can I write an anonymous condolence message?

No, it's generally considered inappropriate to leave anonymous condolence messages. Signing your name or leaving a first name is a sign of respect and allows the family to acknowledge your support.

How long should I wait before writing a condolence message?

There's no specific timeframe for writing a condolence message. It's best to send your condolences as soon as possible after learning about the passing, but even weeks or months later can be appreciated by the grieving family.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to incorporate humorous anecdotes or personality traits into the obituary as a way to celebrate the deceased person's life and spirit.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider asking a friend or family member for help. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer guidance or assistance with writing the obituary.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, quotes, lyrics, or poems can add meaning and personalization to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased person's values or interests.

How do I handle errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible to report any errors. They may be able to correct the mistake in subsequent publications or online versions.

Can I create a memorial webpage instead of an obituary?

Yes, many online platforms offer memorial webpages that allow you to create a personalized tribute with photos, stories, and condolences. These pages can remain active for years to come.

What if I'm unsure about what to say in a condolence message?

Sometimes simplicity is best. A heartfelt "I'm so sorry for your loss" or "My thoughts are with you" can go a long way in showing your support and care for the grieving family.
