Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help facilitate condolences, flowers, and charitable donations in memory of the loved one.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include a photo, quotes, or anecdotes to make it more personal.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, around 100-200 words. However, some online platforms may allow for longer tributes or stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they're remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time. This is often referred to as a "self-written" or "pre-written" obituary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and is often longer and more personalized.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, including funeral home websites, online memorial sites, and social media groups. These platforms often offer additional features such as guest books, photo galleries, and donation links.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may publish immediately upon submission, while others may take several days or even weeks. Be sure to check with the publication for their specific deadlines and policies.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published in print. However, online platforms may allow for corrections or updates. It's essential to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid errors.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and word count. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a single publication. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I request a correction if there's an error in the obituary?

Yes! If you notice an error in the published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request a correction. They will work with you to rectify the mistake as soon as possible.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple newspapers?

You'll need to submit the obituary separately to each newspaper, following their individual guidelines and payment structures. Consider using an online platform that offers multi-publication services to simplify the process.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there's sensitive information about the deceased that you'd rather not share publicly (e.g., cause of death), consider omitting it or consulting with family members before publishing.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for some time?

Yes! You can still write and publish an obituary for someone who passed away previously. This can be especially helpful for those who didn't have one published at the time of their passing.
