Departed: 04/12/2022 (Danbury)
Obituary Preview: Rita Margaret Warren
Rita M. (Sullivan) Warren, 90, a Danbury resident for many years who was currently residing at River Glen Healthcare Center in Southbury, entered into eternal rest on April 12, 2022. She was the wife of the late Franklyn G. Warren. Proud of her Irish-Catholic roots, Rita was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Church in Danbury for many years.
Rita was born in Danbury on October 29, 1931, to the late Richard and Mary Sullivan. The youngest of three children, Rita and her two siblings, Joe and Mary, after losing both of their parents at an early age remained close to each other for the rest of their lives. After attending schools in Danbury and Bethel, including St. Peter’s School in Danbury, Rita graduated from Bethel High School in 1949. In that same graduating class were her future husband and her brother, Joe.
In June, 1953, Rita and Frank were married. They later raised their three children in Westport and Danbury. As the last surviving member of the 1952 Danbury Hospital School of Nursing, Rita spent many years working as a nurse; mostly at Danbury Hospital. She retired from Danbury Hospital in 1995. Besides being a caring nurse, she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a wonderful mother-in-law, and someone who adored being an aunt to her many nieces and nephews. There was nothing that was more important to her than her family.
Besides her parents and husband, Rita was predeceased by her two siblings, as well as by her daughter, Nancy, and a grandson, Nick. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Peter (Debbie) Warren, her daughter, Patricia (Peter) Siecienski, her grandchildren, Brian (Kati) Warren,  Sean (Lauren) Warren, Steven Siecienski, Lauren (Bryan) Cassidy, and Heidi Bundy. Floyd "Bud" Bowlby - August 10, 1923 - March 08, 2022

Departed: 03/08/2022 (Danbury)
Obituary Preview: Floyd Edward “Bud” Bowlby, age 98 died Tuesday, March 8, 2022 in Newtown, CT. He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Karl) Bowlby.
He was Born August 10, 1923, son of the late Charles Edward and Carrie (Forespring) Bowlby. Bud was born at home in New Centerville, PA. When the doctor came to check on him and his mother, he either failed to ask or couldn’t remember the baby’s name. Bud’s birth was registered in PA state records as Earl George, not Floyd Edward.  Earl George was the name of the doctor.  This was corrected years later when Bud needed a passport.
In 1942, when Bud was not of age, he wanted to serve his country in WWII. He finally convinced his mother to sign papers and he entered the US Navy in January 1943. He was sent to Noroton, CT to study radio science. This is where he met the love of his life, Eleanor, at a surprisingly fun church party.
Bud served in the Navy until April 1946 and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer, 2nd Class. He became part of the OSS, the predecessor of the CIA. He wore many uniforms and was assigned to Europe and traveled to China to decode radio signals.
After an honorable discharge, which earned Bud a number of ribbons and medals, he joined Pitney Bowes. In his 42-year career his positions included Foreman and Director of Quality Assurance.  He and Eleanor raised 3 children in Stamford, and he participated actively in Zion Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and other organizations.
Floyd and Eleanor moved to Norwalk, CT in 1991, where he served on the Board of Foxboro Condominium. In 2004 they moved to Danbury, CT. In 2011 they celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage before Eleanor passed.
Bud was most recently a resident of Maplewood at Newtown, where he was loved by all his wonderful caretakers for almost a year. He always said thank you to his aides and he truly appreciated all they did for him. He is survived by his son: Donald F. Bowlby (Susan) of West Chester PA; daughter: Doris E. Bowlby Panzica (James Panzica); Grandsons: Donald F. Bowlby, Jr. (Jill) of Middletown, DE; Charles F. Bowlby, Jr of New Haven, CT and Jeffrey D. Bowlby (Nicole) of Phoenixville, PA; also 7 great grandchildren: Danielle, Timothy, Adam, Emily, Jonathan, Lauren and Christopher
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his son: Charles F. Bowlby; brothers: Jay Bowlby and Willard F. Bowlby, sister: Betty Hostetler.
A graveside service will be held at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery, Stamford, CT, Saturday at 11:30 AM. There are no calling hours. Hull Funeral Service, Danbury is handling arrangements.

Susan Elizabeth Hart - August 11, 1917 - September 18, 2021

Departed: 09/18/2021 (Danbury)
Obituary Preview: Susan Elizabeth Moore Hart quietly departed her life on the morning of September 18, 2021. She was born on August 11, 1917, in Southington CT, the youngest daughter of Daisy Ackart and Charles Martin Moore.  Her husband, Orson H. Hart, Jr., her three sisters, Charlotte Rowe, Adelaide Butler, Doris Moore and her nephew Lawrence Smith predeceased her. She is survived by her two daughters, Katherine Hart (William Uricchio) and Sarah Tornow, two nieces, Barbara Went (Joe), and Eleanor Patterson (George), four grandchildren, Christopher Tornow (Adina), Nicole Yarrish (Adam), Lawrence Uricchio (Zina Deldar) and Phoebe Uricchio (Michael Gilliam) plus five great grandchildren in addition to many great nieces and nephews.
Having skipped a grade in elementary school, she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. Though this was the end of her formal education, she never stopped learning. She was an avid reader, but she was not a recluse, seeking to learn from every encounter she had with family, friends and strangers. Books, though, were definitely an important element of her life and she fed her imagination through her extensive reading, (at one point she had subscriptions to over 30 periodicals). Her intellectual interests were broad, though music, literature and nature were at the top of the list. She began each day with the NYT crossword puzzle which she would finish in record time, usually before her daughters left for school.
No account of her life would be complete without describing her love for and fascination with nature. She spent her early years on a farm where she grew to love the seasons, the plants and most of all the animals. For many years she recorded her observations in small journals.  Until she moved, at age 87, to her final home she always had at least one pet.  Cats were her favorites, but we also had two Shelties and a bird.  She also loved wildlife and though she cherished her cats, she rescued any chipmunks, mice or baby squirrels that they caught.  Her love of birds provided her husband with a life-long challenge, trying to defeat the squirrels that attacked her feeders.
Following graduation, Susan moved to Hartford, where she worked for the Phoenix Life Insurance Company. Here she met the man, Orson H. Hart, who would become her husband and best friend.  They called each other “chum” a nickname that expressed their deep attachment to each other. On Valentine’s Day, 1942, they were married in Washington, D.C.  Following the war, they returned to CT, establishing homes first in Darien and then in New Canaan, where they raised their two daughters.
Being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, was a role Susan cherished but once her daughters were in school, being a housewife did not provide enough stimulation. She started as a volunteer with the local Red Cross Blood drive, eventually become Chairman of the drive and finally Chairman of the chapter in New Canaan, CT.  Her service with the Red Cross led to her appointment to the local Board of Welfare. Following her “retirement” from the Red Cross, she volunteered with the New Canaan Historical Society.
In the late 1960s Susan and Orson purchased property on the Cape and for the next twenty years they entertained themselves, building a second home. They called this their “third child.” They cherished their home on the Cape and the hours they spent there, but it also gave them great pleasure to loan it to family and friends.
Susan made friends in every chapter of her life, and was the kind of person with whom people always felt at ease, whether they knew her or not. As a little girl, one of her daughters never understood why there had to be such long conversations with grocery clerks ‘when we didn’t even know them,’ but was always told that if the grocery clerk needed to talk, then the least Mom could do was listen. Her family is particularly grateful to the staff at the Cascades, an assisted living facility in Bethel, CT where she lived for the last 17 years of her life. They not only took excellent care of her, they were her friends. In addition to the staff, we must mention one other person, Nana Annoh. In February 2020, Nana became Susan’s 24/7 aide. This is a significant commitment under normal circumstances, but quickly became surreal when the Cascades entered lockdown due to the Covid Pandemic. Isolated together in two rooms, Nana not only took excellent care of Susan, she provided companionship and stimulation. Nana is a Pandemic hero.
A memorial service will be held at the Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division ST., Danbury, CT; Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends preceding the service from 10:30 to 11:00 AM. Burial will be private.
In place of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Red Cross, The Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Connecticut Humane Society, radio station WMNR or a library of your choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who wish to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also assist with writing and publishing the obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable achievements or accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the person who has passed.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with payment information and any required documentation.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their legacy is told in their own words. This can be a thoughtful gesture for your loved ones and help reduce their burden during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also a celebration of the person's life. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture their personality and spirit.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often have specific deadlines for submission and publication, while online platforms may publish immediately or within a few hours.

Can I make corrections to an already-published obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They will typically work with you to make necessary changes.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

In some cases, families may prefer not to publicly announce the passing of a loved one. Private obituaries can be shared with immediate family and friends through email or private online platforms.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and other resources.

Can I republish an old obituary on social media or online platforms?

If you're sharing an old obituary on social media or online platforms, be sure to respect copyright laws and obtain permission from the original publisher if necessary. You may also want to consider reaching out to family members or descendants for their input.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or online memorials. Expect costs to range from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages and tribute websites allow you to create a personalized space to share memories, photos, and stories about your loved one. These can be especially helpful for those who cannot attend funeral services in person.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers after publishing an obituary?

If you're receiving condolences from strangers after publishing an obituary, it's generally best to respond graciously and acknowledge their kind words. You may also want to set boundaries around responding to messages if they become overwhelming.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or lyrics can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose pieces that resonate with the person's life, interests, or values.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider seeking guidance from a funeral home director, counselor, or trusted friend. You can also look at examples online or draw inspiration from other sources.

Can I update an existing obituary with new information?

In some cases, it may be possible to update an existing obituary with new information such as additional survivors or corrected details. Contact the publication or platform directly to inquire about their update policies.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.
