Peggy Ann Mullen - August 15, 1948 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Nashua)
Obituary Preview: Peggy Ann Mullen, age 75 formerly of Charles City, IA, died Saturday, April 20, 2024, at LaPorte City Specialty Care.
No formal services will be held at this time.  A private family graveside service will take place at a later date in Humboldt.
Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory - Olson Chapel in Nashua have been entrusted with arrangements.
Peggy was born August 15, 1948 in Fort Dodge, IA as firstborn to William and Arlene Jensen. She grew up in Humboldt, IA. She developed her caretaker heart at a young age, always helping with her five younger siblings. Sacrifice was something Peggy knew well and continued to do her entire life.
Peggy met her husband, Russell, through friends. They were married on July 2, 1966. Their first born son, Michael Lee, entered the world in 1967 and Peggy cherished the short time she and Russ had with him. Over the next few years, they welcomed their daughter, Shelley, and son, William (Bill), and lived in Charles City, IA.
While her kids were young, Peggy humbly took on the role as breadwinner for her family when her husband became physically injured and could no longer work. While not only handling the demands of being a mother and a wife, Peggy acquired her bachelor’s degree from Hamilton Business College. This ultimately led to her career of 22 years working at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in the Data Processing department.
Her free time was spent with family, often camping, traveling with friends, enjoying her kids and her grandkids. She loved gathering with her extended family for reunions and weekend get-togethers. Her role was cooking and cleaning, and she always had a camera with film so pictures could be taken.
Peggy enjoyed DIY projects and spent time collecting things for “someday” projects. She had an eye for design and was great at organizing. She enjoyed listening to the BeeGees and it was something she bonded with her grandchildren over. Her family saw her as a hard worker and a wealth of knowledge. She always knew the right thing to say and gave the tightest hugs. Peggy’s love knew no bounds, even as tragedy and hardships hit her family more than once. She never once complained about the sacrifices she had to make for the people she loved. Later in life, Peggy developed a love for animals, even providing a loving home for their grand dogs who loved them just as much.
The mind may steal memories, but even up to the end, it never took Peggy’s love and compassion she had for others.
Peggy is survived by her son William (Michelle) Mullen of Mason City; daughter Shelley (Sheldon) Pahnisch of Nashua; brothers: Richard (Debbie) Jensen of Texas and Paul (Donna) Jensen of North Carolina; sisters: Connie (Brad) Eller of Montezuma and Kathy Sorensen of Bloomfield; sister-in-law Gena Jensen of Texas; grandchildren: Andrew, Makenzie, Ashley, Samantha, Joseph, and Max; great-grandchildren: Talan, Finlee, and Bryson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Arlene (Grohe Jensen; husband Russell Mullen; son Michael Lee Mullen; brothers: John and Steven Jensen; and baby boy Pahnisch. (641) 435-4134

Sharon Lee Merfeld - January 22, 1936 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Nashua)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Lee Merfeld, age 88 of Nashua, IA, died Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Nora Springs Care Center surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2024 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua with Rev. Drew McHolm presiding. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua following the service.
Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory - Olson Chapel in Nashua.
Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory - Olson Chapel in Nashua have been entrusted with arrangements.
On April 18, 2024, after 88-years of love, sacrifice, and service to her family, church, and community, Sharon Merfeld exchanged the struggles of earthly life for the beautiful promise of eternal salvation. At long last, she is reunited with her husband Mick who earnestly awaited the arrival of his golf partner, remote finder, and pie baking wife of 62 years, as well as her two sons, Greg and Tim, who fought to be the first to hug their mom once again.
Sharon Chandler, the daughter of Richard and Marvlyn (Castor) Chandler, entered the world in historic fashion on January 22, 1936, at home in Nashua, Iowa, on the coldest day in 117 years of previously recorded Iowa history. Sharon was an only child, but her upbringing was anything but lonely as she played, fished, and fought with her cousins at her grandparents’ farms in rural Nashua and Minnesota. Sharon graduated from Nashua High School in 1954 where she was a thespian, cheerleader, drum major, and National Honor Society member. Her mother attributed the latter designation to the fact she kept young Sharon from visiting her dad’s main street barber shop where the conversations may have tainted her proper character.
Sharon planned to attend watchmaking school, but after her dad’s sudden death, instead took a job in Nashua. In 1955, Sharon met Mick Merfeld on a blind date and, despite her mother’s warnings, married him on November 16, 1956 and moved to Greene. Sharon worked for Salsbury Laboratories in Charles City until 1960 when son Greg was born. In 1962, after son Tim’s birth, they moved to Nashua where Mick ran the Nashua DX and Sharon ran the home.
Sharon was a ready community volunteer who exuded competence and confidence, which she instilled in her children as well. She was president of Junior Federated, P.E.O. Chapter EN, and chaired too many committees to count at the Nashua Town and Country Club. In fact, Sharon and Mick were instrumental in establishing the local golf club in 1968, a move that provided Mick’s lifetime hobby, and Sharon with Wednesday night solitude for the next 50 years of married life. After Suzy’s birth in 1969, Sharon taught herself to paint for stress relief, a hobby that produced over 400 portraits and paintings that are now treasured keepsakes.
Among Sharon’s many talents were hitting a putt to the exact spot Mick directed her to aim, refinishing woodwork and reupholstering furniture to save money they didn’t have, and conducting research, before the internet, to write the history of Nashua and trace her family lineage back to the Mayflower.
Music and her faith were strong threads throughout Sharon’s life and both sustained her through many losses and hardships.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Marvlyn Chandler Stuelke, step-father Theron Stuelke, husband Mick Merfeld, and sons Greg Merfeld and Tim Merfeld. She is survived by her daughter Suzy (Keith) Turner of Rockford, daughter-in-law Carrie Merfeld of Manteco, California, daughter-in-law Sheri Merfeld–Takeguma of Agoura Hills, California, four grandchildren, and many friends.
To honor Sharon’s love of reading and history, the family requests memorial contributions be made in her name to the Nashua Public Library or the Nashua-Plainfield National History Day Program. (641) 435-4134

Born in Waverly, Iowa, on June 30, 1959, Mark's life journey was a testament to his spirited nature and friendly disposition.
After graduating from Plainfield High School in 1977, Mark continued to enrich his knowledge and skills at Hawkeye Tech, where he earned an Electrical Engineering Technology degree between 2000 and 2002. His educational pursuits set the stage for a successful career where Mark dedicated many years as a maintenance worker at Sara Lee and Nestle, before transitioning to an Environmental Specialist role at Floyd County Medical Center. His hands-on expertise and amiable personality made him a valued colleague and a friend to all who worked alongside him.
Mark's heart found its match in Annette (Livingston) Wood, his beloved wife, whom he met during their school years in Plainfield. The couple married in Waverly, Iowa, and built a life filled with love and adventure, never straying far from Nashua, the area that they called home throughout their adult lives. Together, they raised their son, Dylan Wood, born in Iowa City, who inherited his father's kind-heartedness and love for life's simple pleasures.
His brothers, Eric and Donald Wood, shared in Mark's life journey, from childhood antics to adult camaraderie, always finding solace in the bond of brotherhood that kept them connected through the years. Often through the activities of motorcycling and target shooting experiences.
Mark's life was a melody composed of his passions and hobbies. He loved music deeply, with every rhythm and lyric finding a place in his heart. His motorcycles were not just vehicles but companions on the open road, where he felt a sense of freedom and joy. Mark was a proficient target shooter, a hobby that reflected his focus and patience. His love for his feline companions was evident in the gentle care and affection he showered upon them.
One of Mark's most endearing qualities was his childlike curiosity and enthusiasm for life's novelties. This was best exemplified by his recent fulfillment of a long-held curiosity – tasting an "Alaskan Waffle," a simple pleasure that brought him immense joy and a story he loved to share with a twinkle in his eye.
Mark and Annette shared a tradition of annual trips to Road America, where they enjoyed the thrill of the race and the companionship of each other's presence on their motorcycle rides. Their many leisure trips on the bike were moments of connection and freedom, creating memories that Annette will hold dear.
Mark's life was not just about the destinations but also about the journey. Born on September 14, 1937, in St. Ansgar, Iowa, Bob's journey was one marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering spirit.
Bob's early life laid the foundation for a man who would live with integrity and discipline. After completing his high school education, he answered the call of duty by joining the United States Navy in 1956. Bob served with honor on the USS Midway as an Airman Structural Mechanic until 1960 and continued his service in the Navy Reserve until 1962. His time in the Navy instilled in him a stoic nature that would become one of his defining characteristics.
Upon his return to civilian life, Bob found another kind of love. He married Nadine Fritze at the United Methodist Church in Nashua on August 14, 1965. Together, they built a life filled with joy. Though Nadine preceded him in death, the strength and warmth of their union continued to inspire all who knew them.
Professionally, Bob's post-Navy career took him to Ozark/TWA out of Chicago, where he continued to apply the skills and discipline he had honed in the military. He retired in 2012, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication. Retirement also allowed Bob to fully indulge in his passions. He was an ardent fan of Iowa women's basketball and loved the Hawkeyes with a fervent spirit. His admiration for sports was only rivaled by his love for his farm, where he spent countless hours ensuring everything was in perfect order.
Bob's passion for life extended to his family, especially during a memorable trip with his daughter to the USS Midway. The joy of stepping into his old bunk room brought an undeniable light to his eyes, a moment cherished by his loved ones. A man who always kept a clean lawn, Bob's structured nature was a testament to his analytical mind and courageous heart.
Friends and family will remember Bob as a man of few words but of immense presence. His stoicism, a likely legacy of his Navy days, was the bedrock upon which he built his life. Yet, beneath that reserved exterior was a man of deep emotion and loyalty, qualities that endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bob Wolff leaves behind a family that will forever be proud of the life he led and the values he instilled in them. His son Mike and daughter Starla, along with the rest of his family and friends, will hold dear the memories of a man who was as steadfast as he was loving.
Robert is survived by son Michael (Deb) Stastny of Nashua; daughter Starla (Tom) Griffith of Kihey, Hawaii; niece Linda (Gerry) Smith; grandchildren: Jamie Stastny, Jessica Stastny-Hall, and Kiana Griffith; and great-grandchildren: Regean, Kennedy, and Mykah.

Born on May 25, 1946, in Charles City, Iowa, to Fred and Maxine (Wolff) Hansen, Richard's life was one marked by devotion to his family, his farm, and his community.
A lifelong resident of Nashua, Richard graduated from Nashua High School and soon after answered the call of duty by serving in the National Guard from 1966 to 1972. His heart, however, always belonged to the soil and skies of Iowa. Richard was a dedicated farmer, a steward of the land who found solace and joy in the rolling fields that he tended with care and respect.
On September 10, 1966, Richard married his beloved wife, Carolyn (Venz) Hansen, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and the daily blessings of family. Their union was blessed with four children: Tami, Kim, Shawna, and Jason. He took immense pride in his role as a father, instilling in his children the values of hard work, kindness, and the importance of family.
Richard's life was a testament to his selfless nature. He was always known to have time for people, whether it was a neighbor in need or a stranger seeking advice. His presence was a comfort to many, and his willingness to lend a helping hand was just one of the many ways he demonstrated his loving and kind spirit.
An avid supporter of the Nashua-Plainfield schools, Richard never missed an opportunity to cheer on his children and later his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their sporting events. His joy was palpable, and his encouragement never waned, no matter the score.
Richard's passions extended beyond the farm and the bleachers. He relished in the thrill of snowmobiling and boating, activities that allowed him to experience the beauty of nature and the exhilaration of life. Yet, it was the simple pleasures that he treasured most: the yearly family vacations, the love of Branson with his wife, and the quiet moments spent watching his crops grow from the window.
One of Richard's fondest memories was a trip to Montana with his daughters, an adventure that brought him closer to the vastness of the American landscape and the tight-knit bond of his family. Dancing with Carolyn was a cherished pastime, one that reflected the rhythm of their life together—full of grace, strength, and enduring love.
Even as farming became a spectator's sport for him in his later years, Richard maintained his connection to the land and the farming community. He enjoyed conversations with fellow farmers, sharing stories and wisdom gleaned from a lifetime of cultivating the earth.
Richard's legacy is one of love and service. He was the epitome of selflessness, always putting the needs of his family and friends before his own. His memory will be honored by all who knew him, not only as a man who loved his family above all else but as a pillar of the community who embodied the very best of what it means to lead a life of kindness and generosity.
Richard is survived by son Jason (Marisa) Hansen of Nashua; daughters: Tami (Steve) Sudol of Nashua, Kim (Mark) Walk of Nashua, and Shawna (David) DePuew of Nashua; sister Linda (Jerry) Smith of Nashua; brother-in-law Ron (Marilyn) Venz of Charles City; grandchildren: Chad (Sarah) Sudol, Chase (Olivia) Sudol, Collin (Melissa) Sudol, Austin (Jamie) Walk, Taylor (Ashley) Walk, Brianna (Matt) Bryan, Amanda (Ben) Tiedt, Dayton (Kaylee) Hansen, Shaylee Hansen, Jase Hansen, and Jaxson Hansen; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Carolyn (Venz) Hansen; his parents Fred and Maxine (Wolff) Hansen; and parent-in-laws Melvin and Madonna Venz.

James Daniel Diller, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, left this world on December 26, 2023, at the age of 82. Born in Charles City, Iowa, on October 23, 1941, Jim's life was a testament to his intelligence, handiness, and passionate nature. He passed away peacefully in Waverly, Iowa, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories.
Jim's early years were spent in the close-knit community of Nashua, where he completed his education, graduating from Nashua High School in 1961. His life took a turn towards lifelong companionship one fateful evening at the Melody Lounge in Charles City, where he met the love of his life, Patricia Snitker. The connection was instantaneous, and their love story blossomed into marriage on May 16, 1970, at The United Methodist Church in Lansing. Jim and Patricia's union was blessed with the birth of their daughter, Sara, on November 27, 1970, in Waukon, Iowa.
Jim was a man of commitment, not only to his family but also to his work. After marrying Patricia, the couple settled in Lansing, where Jim initially worked at the Chrysler Plant in Belvedere, Illinois. Despite the challenge of being away from his family during the week, he dedicated himself to providing for them, returning home every Friday to be with his loved ones. His perseverance paid off when the opportunity arose to continue the family legacy by purchasing the Diller family farm near Nashua. Embracing this new chapter, Jim and his family moved to Nashua, where he began a fulfilling career with White Farm in Charles City and tended to his own land with the same passion and dedication he applied to all aspects of his life.
His work ethic was unparalleled, and even after the closing of White Farm, Jim found a new venture with Siemons Trucking. There, he relished the opportunity to build relationships with several farmers while picking up their grain for delivery.
Beyond his professional life, Jim's interests were diverse and deeply rooted in his love for the outdoors. An avid hunter, he achieved recognition for his skill with a bow, taking down a large buck that earned him a trophy at a local meat locker. The Mississippi River was a central part of the Diller family's life, providing a backdrop for countless hours of skiing, boating, and fishing. Those who knew Jim could often find him on the river, where he shared his passion for the water with his family and friends, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Jim's intelligence shone through in everything he did, whether he was solving problems on the farm or crafting solutions in his everyday life. His handy nature was a source of pride and a skill he passed on to those around him. But above all, Jim was passionate—a man who threw his heart and soul into his pursuits, his family, and the simple joys of life.
The loss of James Daniel Diller will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the land he nurtured, and the hearts he touched. Jim's life story is one of love, perseverance, and joy—a narrative that will continue to inspire and comfort those he left behind. He used to say you could eat off the floor in his slaughter room.  He was also a member of the Nashua and Clarksville Fire Department for 16 years.
Robin worked hard his entire life. He could never sit still for long. He was always on the go. Robin was a very organized person. Everything in his house and garage had a place. Everything around Robin was always neat and tidy.
In June of 2020 Robin was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiform: terminal brain cancer. Not once did Robin complain. He never asked “why.” He lived life to the absolute fullest. For 3 and ½ years Robin lived with brain cancer and he always had a smile on his face. Robin had some of the best one liners. He made his family laugh every day. Life with Robin was always fun. Robin loved Jagermeister and black licorice. If his kids were home on the weekend you would often hear Robin say, “line ‘em up.” That was his way of getting someone to make everyone a Jager bomb.
Robin passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 8.
Robin is survived by his wife Shelly of Nashua; a son Dustin of Clinton, daughters Megan of Des Moines and Dallas of Denver. His mother Darlene of Nashua, sisters Deb (Dale) Schwickerath of Alta Vista, Sandy (Clark) Sisson of Omaha; Jamee (Phil) Franzen of Nashua; brother Carl Weiss of Clinton. Plus many nieces and nephews.
Robin was preceded in death by his dad Roland, his niece Chrystie, his paternal and maternal grandparents; and his in-laws Les and Rena Kalvig.
Robin wanted his celebration of his life to be casual. He did not want anyone dressing up fancy for him.
Please dress accordingly for the funeral service as it will be held outdoors at Clover Ridge Event Center.

Lenora Alberta Aikey died peacefully on November 30, 2023 in Nashua, Iowa, at the age of 95.
Born on January 24, 1928 in rural Waverly, Iowa, Lenora was the cherished daughter of Leonard and Maude (Medders) Colburn. She grew up the oldest of three daughters and filled the role of protective "big sister" to her younger siblings.
Lenora's formative years on the family farm instilled in her a solid work ethic and spirit of independence. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1948. Upon graduation she enrolled at Pitze's Beauty School. After successfully completing her program she opened her own beauty shop. She later worked for a time for Lutheran Mutual Insurance in Waverly.
On February 17, 1952 Lenora was united in marriage to Keith Aikey. The couple made their home in rural Plainfield where Lenora was actively engaged in farming right alongside Keith. This union was blessed with two children, Dale and Dean. Together with their family, Lenora and Keith farmed and raised dairy and beef cattle for many years. Keith and Lenora had "his" and "hers" Oliver tractors. Lenora farmed the fields right along with Keith and their sons, driving her own tractor. Keith passed away in 1996, but with the help of family, Lenora continued to be involved with farming for more than 20 years after his death until she entered her early 90s.
Lenora loved gardening and for many years her shelves were filled with jars of home-canned produce. She also raised chickens and sold eggs locally. Hobbies she enjoyed included sewing many of her own clothes, crocheting, and quilting. Right up until recently she was still crocheting baby blankets.
Beyond her practical skills, Lenora was a woman of deep faith. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nashua. One of her prized possessions was her grandmother Medders's Bible, which Lenora would read daily.
She remained intellectually engaged and liked staying up-to-date about current events. Lenora was very interested in staying informed about the weather and the crops, even after retiring from farming. She relished car rides in the country in her later years to go and see how all the local crops were doing. She was also concerned about crop prices and continued listening to the farm news daily.
Lenora is survived by her son Dean (Teresa) Aikey of Plainfield; daughter-in-law Barbara Smith of Davenport; sister Grace McGregor of Nashua; grandchildren Steve (Cortney) Aikey, Kristine Aikey, Jennifer (Josh) Marks, Melissa Aikey, Janet (Nicholas) Turkal, and Mark Aikey; great-grandchildren Averie, Macie, Hunter, Rose, and John; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Maude (Medders) Colburn; husband Keith Aikey; son Dale Aikey; sister Marion Ackerman; brothers-in-law: Ed Ford, Everett Ackerman, and Ron McGregor; and an infant sister.
