Obituary Preview: Georgia Mary Roeder was born on July 27, 1944, the daughter of Elmer and Isabella (Snyder) Lohman in Carroll, Iowa. She was baptized and later confirmed at St. Francis Catholic Church in Maple River. The family lived in Vail, where she attended Catholic elementary school. She graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll with the class of 1962. She then went on to work for a local telephone company.

Georgia married Gary Wiges and the couple was blessed with three sons. Many years later, Georgia married Thomas Hickey and they resided in Manilla and subsequently moved to Vail. Later, Georgia married Ron Roeder and made their home in Arthur. The couple dated in high school and reconnected later in life.

Georgia spent time working as a welder and later obtained her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail for many years and later joined the St. Rose of Lima parish. Georgia enjoyed her flowers. She trained her dogs to keep her good company. Her and Ron took every chance they had to travel to different country western music festivals. Her grandkids will especially remember her sharing her love of bingo with them. Above all, she cherished spending time and making memories with her family.

Georgia passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 79 years and ten days.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Gary Wiges and Tom Hickey. She is survived by her husband, Ron Roeder of Arthur; three sons: Doug (Diana) Wiges and Dave (Carol) Wiges all of Denison, and Dennis (Lisa) Wiges of Belton, Texas; four stepchildren: Nancy (Steve) Schug of Ida Grove, Rick Roeder of Odebolt, Jeff Roeder and Terry Roeder both of Arthur; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, LaVonne Brogan of Sergeant Bluff; and many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima in Denison. The visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the mass. Interment will take place at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery near Manilla. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Curtis Schultz - April 03, 1948 - July 27, 2023

Obituary Preview: Curtis Harold Schultz was born on April 3, 1948, to Harold and Vernette (Miller) Schultz in Schleswig, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed his faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He attended school in Schleswig and graduated with the class of 1966.

Following his education, he traveled to Denver, Colorado and worked for a brief time. He moved back to Schleswig and worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 35 years. Curt married Janice Jensen on December 8, 1967, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The couple made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with three sons: Dakin, Greg and Wade.

Curt was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and served as an Elder and a Sunday school superintendent. He dedicated many years to the Schleswig Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief. He also volunteered his time to the Morgan Cemetery Association Board of Directors. He was an avid fisherman, animal lover, and a die-hard watcher of all things Iowa Hawkeye's and St. Louis Cardinals. Boy Scouts was an important organization to him, as he was a Scout Master. Later in life, you could find him on the golf course. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Curt passed away on July 27, 2023, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 75 years, three months and 24 days.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Ervin Neddermeyer. He is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Janice Schultz of Schleswig; three sons: Dakin (Mary) Schultz of Moville; Greg (Brandee) Schultz of Glenwood; and Wade (Lisa) Schultz of Tucson, Arizona; six grandchildren: Taylor (Logan) Schiebout of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Abigail Schultz (Cooper Silvius) of Glenwood, Jakob Schultz of Moville, Erin Schultz of Glenwood, Madeline Schultz of Moville, Brooklyn Schultz of Glenwood; sister, Carol Neddermeyer of Schleswig; siblings-in-law, Pat (Jon) Stine of Sioux City and Brent (Barb) Jensen of Sergeant Bluff; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Interment will follow in the Morgan Cemetery. Tom was born on November 25, 1949 in Alta, Iowa to Ernie and Mildred Gustafson. He graduated from Alta High School and then attended University of Northern Iowa, prior to attending Law School at the University of Iowa. Since 1976, he made his home in Denison, Iowa.

Tom was a private practice attorney owning his own business, Gustafson Law Firm, since 1979, along with doing a wide variety of criminal defense work. He was the Crawford County Attorney, remaining in office for 28 years, and was one of the longest serving County Attorneys in the State of Iowa. He served on a number of volunteer boards, groups, and committees over the years; some of them being Rotary, Iowa County Attorneys Association, Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Board, the Coffee Club of uptown Denison, and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison. Most people will probably remember him as an avid sports fan, mostly following the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. He always had an endless supply of sporting information stored in his mind. Along with whatever sporting event might be on TV or in a stadium or field nearby, Tom also enjoyed gardening, yard work, and history.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Mildred; his son, Andy; and his brothers, Roger and Dennis; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Tom will be missed by his wife, Kathi of Denison; daughter, Jenny Gustafson of Cedar Rapids; daughter and son in law, Holly and Ryan Risetter of Waterloo; bonus daughters and their husbands, Courtney and Ryan Schulz of Harwood Heights, IL; Taylor and Luke Dalton of Corning; grandchildren Brady, Addison, and Ben Risetter of Waterloo; Eli & Hudson Dalton of Corning; Abigail Schulz of Harwood Heights, IL; mother in law and father in law, Gary and Phyllis Hanson of Irwin; brothers in law and sisters in law, Jeff and Vickie Hanson of Desoto, KS; Dean and Suzanne Hanson of Eagle, MI; Dan and Megan Hanson of Denison; and sister in law Debi Gustafson of Chandler, AZ; cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Visitation with Family Greeting Friends will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2023 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Honoring Tom's love of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs, please feel free to wear Hawkeye's or Cub's clothing to the visitation.

Fellowship will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison. Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023 also at the church with interment to follow in the Danway Cemetery in Kirkman.

Clayton Meyer - June 29, 1924 - July 24, 2023

Obituary Preview: Clayton Charles Meyer was born on June 29, 1924, to Charlie and Alma (Schroeder) Meyer in Westside, Iowa. He attended Westside schools. He worked on his parents' farm until he was able to get out on his own and then worked for local farmers in Crawford County.

Clayton married Helen Namanny on September 27, 1952, in Westside and the couple was blessed with the birth of four children: Clark, Marla, Lisha and Tammy. The couple later divorced. Clayton met his second wife, Edna Eisma in Okoboji. They married on June 29, 1979, and the couple lived in Denison.

In the early 1960's, Clayton started working at Iowa Beef Processors. He worked there for over 25 years and retired in 1986. Clayton was a member of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Denison. He enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre. He also enjoyed getting together with family and going to different events at the Denison Senior Center. One could also find him walking around town or enjoying coffee at Trio Café with his friends. You could always count on a friendly conversation when you crossed paths. He was a Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed watching the World Series.

Clayton passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023, at Gracewell - Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 99 years and 25 days.

Clayton was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marla McKee; wife, Edna Meyer; brothers: Marvin (Jeanae) Meyer and Lyle (JoAnn) Meyer; and sister, Shirley (Pat) Speck. He is survived by three children: Clark Meyer of Vail; Lisha (Richard) Beermann of Dow City, Tammy (Bill) Stouffer of Galena, Missouri; five grandchildren: Casi McKee (Kevin Collins) of Arion, Shayla Silvy of Reeds Spring, Missouri, Keith (Karla) Meyer of Omaha, Nebraska, Kayla (Dylan) Krohnke of Schleswig, Tyrell Ransom of Reeds Spring, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Jenna, Shelby, Josslynn, Kashton, Tyann, and L.J.; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial will follow in the Westside Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Gloria Vaughn - August 01, 1945 - July 14, 2023

Obituary Preview: Gloria Jean Vaughn was born August 1, 1945, the daughter of Ivan and Catherine (Garvey) Ortwine. She was born in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She received her education from Farmington Hills Community School and graduated with the Class of 1964.

On August 17, 1968, Gloria was united in marriage to Robert Vaughn I in her mother's backyard in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children, Cheryl Lynn, Rebecca Jean and Robert Arthur II. In 1969, the couple moved to Iowa where she continued to raise her children. Gloria worked as a cook at KFC, Jasper's, and then Cronk's Café in Denison for many years.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved watching food shows and spending time with her family. In her spare time, she liked to go fishing, drinking beer, and socializing with her neighbors. She also enjoyed traveling; most recently traveling with her daughter to see the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan.

Gloria passed away peacefully, with her daughter and her companion Jack by her side, on Friday, July 14, 2023 at her home in Denison attaining the age of 77 years, 11 months, and 13 days. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Vaughn I; one infant daughter, Cheryl Vaughn; one stepson, Richard Vaughn; sister, Nancy Ortwine; and brother, William Ortwine.

Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Friedrichsen and Logan McCullough of Schleswig and Rebecca's husband, Bruce Friedrichsen of Vail; one son, Robert Vaughn II of Denison; grandchildren: Sarah and her husband Derek Lilleholm of Kiron and Jennifer Friedrichsen of Denison; great-grandchildren: Kyza, Whyitt, and Mylee Lilleholm and Adrian and Gabriel Carey; many nieces, nephews, in-laws; other relatives and friends.

Leo Welsh - August 05, 1966 - July 09, 2023

Obituary Preview: Leo James Welsh was born on August 5, 1966, to James and Mary (Hanrahan) Welsh in Fridley, Minnesota. He was baptized and later confirmed at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. He attended Denison schools and graduated with the class of 1985. Following graduation, he moved to Arnold's Park, Iowa where he worked for the summer. That fall, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a military police officer. His first station was in Darmstadt, Germany. After three years of active-duty service, he transferred to the United States Army Reserve and served for 12 years.

Leo married Tricia Thul and two children were born to this union, Kassidy and Tanner. The couple lived in Denison and later divorced. Leo then married Sara Backhaus and they had one son, Tyler. The couple made their home in Vail and later divorced.

Leo worked as a security instructor at Denison Job Corps for many years. He also worked alongside his father in bail bond services in Denison. Leo was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and the Vail Fire Department. Leo was a motorcycle enthusiast and joined the Soldier Valley American Legion Riders. He was also a member of the Vail American Legion.

Leo enjoyed fast cars and fishing. He was recognized as an expert shooter in his military training and he enjoyed target practice with various weapons. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. His children could always count on seeing him in the crowd at their various activities. After school, he would pick up Kassidy and Tanner and take them to their grandpa's pawn shop, where they would sit and visit over a coke slushy. Kassidy cherishes her memories of riding on the back of his motorcycle and Tanner will always cherish the memories made at Iowa State University games. He loved taking his son, Tyler to the movies and enjoying a coke slushy, as well as riding four-wheelers.

Leo passed away due to a motorcycle accident in Vail on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the age of 56 years, 11 months and four days.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Welsh. He is survived by his three children: Kassidy Welsh and fiancé, Christopher Siemer of Denison, Tanner Welsh (Madison Struck) of Charter Oak, and Tyler Welsh of Harlan; mother, Mary Welsh of Vail; brother, Daniel Welsh of Lincoln, Nebraska; nephew, Cory Welsh of Los Angeles, California; niece, Sydney Welsh of Los Angeles, California; aunt, Thresia Riley of Carroll; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail. Clarion and Melvin loved to travel. They went on several trips to Alaska, Branson, Okoboji, and countless other places either on a bus trip or cruise. Clarion loved to collect tea pots and sets, cookie jars, cookbooks, dolls, and many other unique items with Melvin. She enjoyed meeting her lady friends for coffee, playing cards with other couples, and spending time with family. She had a strong faith in the Lord and would always lean on him during difficult times.

Clarion passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at the Gracewell Nursing Facility at the age of 89 years. She was preceded in death by parents: William and Sophia Evers; her husband of 69 years Melvin Holdsworth; children Randall Holdsworth, Diane Wiener, and Rhonda Slavik; siblings: Shirley Winquest, and Marilyn Evers; and many other family members.

She is survived by her sons-in-law: Doyle Slavik of Schleswig, IA and David Wiener of Logan, IA; grandchildren: Jessica and her husband Jordan Thistle of Mingo, IA, Elizabeth and her husband William Greer of Ames, IA, and James Wiener of Westphalia, IA; great-grandchildren: Ava Wiener and Brayden Greer; sister: Evelyn and her husband Robert Rank of Clarinda, IA; many other relatives and friends.

Jeanne Hawley - September 19, 1937 - June 30, 2023

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail with Interment in the Vail Cemetery. Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Jeanne, daughter of Leonard and Jessie (Bell) Aylward, was born September 19, 1937, in Vail, Iowa. She grew up in Vail and graduated from Vail High School in 1956.

On August 21, 1956, Jeanne was united in marriage with Richard "Ted" Hawley at the Vail Presbyterian Church. After the wedding they lived in California until he was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1958. While in California, their daughter, Kimberly Joy, was born. They returned to the family farm north of Vail and farmed with Ted's brother Bob. In 1958, they purchased a farm where they farmed for the next sixty years. In 1958, the family was joined by son Richard Thomas (Tom) Hawley, then followed by sons Russell Todd in 1960 and Theodore Gene in 1963. Larry Horky came to work for Ted on the farm and soon became an adopted son. The couple retired from active farming in 1998. They then leased the land, but remained on the farm.

Jeanne was a longtime and active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Vail, as well as the Order of the Eastern Star. She volunteered with numerous community efforts such as swimming pool, community building, and would read to grade school children at Vail Elementary. She was twice named Citizen of the Year. Jeanne cherished the time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On Friday, June 30, 2023, Jeanne passed away, surrounded by her family at the Reed House in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 11 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ted Hawley, a grandson Eric Horky, a brother Paul Aylward; brothers-in-law Dean Morford, Bob Hawley and Kenny Kock, sisters-in-law Norma Hawley and Marie Hinz;

Jeanne is survived by her five children: Larry (Barb) Horky of Sioux City; Kim (Randy) Muhlbauer of Vail; Tom (Tami) Hawley of Mount Ayr; Russell (Lori) Hawley of Vail; Theodore (Joni) Hawley of Missouri Valley; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a sister Joyce Kock of Vail; a brother-in-law Gordon Hinz of Arizona; sisters-in-law Gladys Morford of Rio Verde, Arizona, and Mary Aylward of Huron, South Dakota; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In 1989, Terry moved to Opportunity Living Acres in Lake City; being one of their very first clients. He worked at the Opportunity Living Acres doing many odd end jobs for many years.

He was an avid bird watcher and he enjoyed playing on his kindle, dogs, little kids, going out to eat; especially Pizza Ranch, fishing, attending sporting events, and having coffee time with junior mints. He also loved hanging out with his girls, watching movies, and going on rides in his electric wheel chair.

Terry passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, attaining the age of 76 years, 1 month, and 10 days. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his many wonderful caregivers at Opportunity Living Acres who will miss him dearly.

Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at the Lake City Community Building in Lake City. Private Graveside Service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2023 in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Memorials may be directed to the Opportunity Living Acres in Lake City.

Obituary Preview: Paul George Clausen, age 90, of Gretna, Nebraska, died June 23, 2023, at Brookestone Meadows in Elkhorn, Nebraska. Paul was born on October 28, 1932, on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa, to Vernon and Augusta (Fogle) Clausen.

Paul was baptized on November 20, 1932, at St. John Lutheran Church by Rev. A. Amstein; and confirmed on April 14, 1946, by Rev. Walter P. Schroeder at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his elementary education in rural and parochial schools and attended Charter Oak High School, graduating with the class of 1950.

Following high school, Paul enlisted in the Navy and served from 1951 to 1956. After boot camp in San Diego, California, he joined the Naval Construction Battalion. Paul served his country in many locations abroad (Marshall Islands, Japan, Philippines, and Alaska's Aleutian Islands).

On May 29, 1954, Paul was united in marriage to Darlene Schultz at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. They were blessed with the birth of three children.

Following Paul's military service, he went to barber college and was a barber for 41 years in Denison, Iowa. Paul enjoyed woodworking until 2017 when he moved to Gretna, Nebraska. Several of his many woodworking accomplishments were building the covered bridge in Charter Oak's Arboretum in 1992 and the communion rail in St. John Lutheran Church.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife Darlene in May 2018, his parents, sister Vernette Bielfeldt, brother-in-law Emil Bielfeldt, brother-in-law Donald Schultz, and sister-in-law Helen Schultz. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Dawn Larson and husband Mark of Lee's Summit, MO; son Rodney Clausen and fiancée Shirley Kaylor of LaGrange, MO; and daughter Denise Ewing and husband Randy of Elkhorn, NE; grandson Matthew Larson and wife Jami of Gladstone, MO; granddaughter Sara Frank and husband Robert of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren Sidney, Henry, Allison, Katelyn, Josiah, Jeremiah, Bella, Emmerly, Colin and Zeeva; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Visitation and memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church, 104 Birch Street, Charter Oak, Iowa 51439. The visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary, followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment with military honors will be in St. Paul Cemetery in Charter Oak.

Obituary Preview: Steven Ray Gonnerman was born on August 2, 1956, the son of Raymond and Berdena (Aldag) Gonnerman in Denison, Iowa. He attended school in Schleswig and graduated from Schleswig High School with the class of 1974. Following his education, he helped his father with trucking and on the family farm. He then started at Feeder's Supply in Schleswig.

Steve married Rita Emerson on August 22, 1998, in Charter Oak. He was confirmed as an adult at St. John Lutheran Church also in Charter Oak. Steven worked for a couple different agriculture companies, first at Farm Service Cooperative in Denison and later Charter Oak Agriculture, until it switched hands to Novus Agriculture.

Steve was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He enjoyed drinking beer and hanging out with friends and family. He was devoted to his job and took great pride in running his sprayer.

Steve passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at CHI Health in Missouri Valley at the age of 66 years, 10 months and nine days.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lance Wolmutt in 2005; wife, Rita Gonnerman in 2008; and brother, Duane Gonnerman. He is survived by his daughter, Nycole (Tom) Ganzhorn of Woodbine; five grandchildren: Blake, Jayde, Briana, Tessa and Abby; sister, Rhonda (Ryan) Kragel of Schleswig; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Wade Bruggeman - October 28, 1936 - June 08, 2023

Obituary Preview: Wade John Bruggeman, 86, was born October 28, 1936 in Carroll, IA, the eldest of four children born to Walter and Edna (Brockmann) Bruggeman. The family originally farmed south of Westside, IA, then moved to Arcadia, IA in 1944 where his dad owned a feed business. At that time Wade obtained his first job of setting pins at the Arcadia Bowling Alley.

On November 22, 1936, Wade was baptized at Zion Lutheran, Arcadia, IA and confirmed at the same church on April 6, 1952, both by Paster Theo Tews. He attended grade school in Westside, IA and later Arcadia, IA. Wade graduated from Arcadia High School in 1955, the last class to graduate from there. Wade attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville, MO and graduated in May, 1959.

After graduation, Wade began his 38-year teaching career as an English and French teacher at Charter Oak High School for five years, taught in Denison High School for two years, and was the high school principal at Sergeant Bluff-Luton for one year. He furthered his education at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, receiving his MS degree (1964) and Specialist in Education degree (1967). He and colleague Don Gries were the first two to receive this prestigious degree from the University.

In the fall of 1967, Wade and Ruth moved to Charter Oak, IA where Wade became principal at Charter Oak-Ute High School. Periodically, he also was a guidance counselor, Driver's Education instructor, and a coach for various sports teams. Wade retired in July, 1997.

Wade and Ruth Schluter were married at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, IA on August 14, 1960. To this union two children were born, Brian (1961) and Carol (1965). Wade was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather. Wade and Ruth created a loving home where they instilled the importance of faith and education while providing a childhood that was second to none. A devoted husband, Wade and Ruth observed their 62nd wedding anniversary in 2022.

A supportive father, Wade enjoyed attending all activities while Brian and Carol were in school and later when Carol played and coached softball at the college level. Each year the family took a two-week camping vacation to various destinations across the country, enjoying various parks, major attractions, overall sightseeing activities, and attending Major League baseball games.

Wade and Ruth owned a cabin and boat on Blackhawk Lake in Lake View, IA where they spent numerous enjoyable summers with family and friends. After retirement, they wintered in Arizona enjoying various activities, especially those surrounding music. Wade and Ruth formed a duo and enjoyed playing music and entertaining at various events in Arizona and Iowa.

Wade possessed many talents including being able to fix, build, or 'figure out' most anything. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, everything surrounding music and sports, and also completing the daily crossword puzzle.

Wade is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth Bruggeman of Charter Oak, IA; son, Brian Bruggeman and his wife Susan of Lincoln, NE; daughter Carol Bruggeman of Louisville, KY; grandchildren; Emily Shinn and her husband Levi of Elkhorn, NE and Ethan Bruggeman and his significant other Keysha Foulk of Lincoln, NE; great-grandchildren: Alexander and Theodore Shinn of Elkhorn, NE; sisters Nancy Wright of Monroe, IA; Janice Burke and her husband Richard of Rock Port, MO; sister-in-law Rita Hicks and her husband Bill of Lake City, IA; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Wade is preceded in death by his parents, Ruth's parents Emil and Violetta Schluter, brother Lon Bruggeman, sisters-in-law Audrey (Jack) Lamaak and Lorraine Schulter, and brother-in-law Dr. Gerald (Carolyn) Schluter.

Memorial donations may be made to the 'family of Wade Bruggeman' for distribution at a later date for programs surrounding Wade's passions of education and sports.

David then attended Southwest Vo-Tech Institute in Jackson, Minnesota, receiving his degree in Architectural Drafting. David worked various jobs in Sioux Falls, Iowa and southwest Minnesota, until he found his home in Worthington, Minnesota, where he worked in production at Commodore Homes for ten years.

David switched careers and started classes at Worthington Community College in Worthington, Minnesota. He married Corann Bootsma on March 7, 1987 in Sibley, Iowa. David graduated from Worthington Community College in 1989. He went on to attend Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota. In May of 1992, he graduated with two degrees: Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems and Bachelor of Science in Accounting. In 1993, the couple moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, where he worked at Vande Berg Scales. In 1996, the couple made their home in Denison, where David was employed with Professional Computer Systems.

David and Corann were blessed with a daughter, Stephanie Renae Stevens on August 24, 1997. David enjoyed projects that involved building and woodworking. He also enjoyed playing tennis. In his spare time, he could be found rebuilding computers. He also had a talent for drawing and writing. He found the Lord as a young adult, and his faith in God was very important to him. David was a member of Faith Family Church in Harlan.

Following a disabling stroke in 2014, he was forced to retire and his health continued to decline. David passed away, surrounded by his wife and daughter, at home on Thursday, June 8, 2023 in Denison, Iowa at the age of 69 years, five months and 11 days.

David was preceded in death by his father, Milo Stevens; infant sister, Nancy; niece, Nicole Jensen; and father-in-law, Harry Bootsma. He is survived by his wife of over 36 years, Corann Stevens of Denison; daughter, Stephanie Stevens of Nevada, Iowa; mother, Roxie Stevens of Estherville; brother, Jeff (Carolyn) Stevens of Wallingford; sister, Barbara Stevens of Algona; mother-in-law, Wilma Bootsma of Sheldon; siblings-in-law, Larry (Laura) Bootsma of Denver, Colorado, Darlene (Darrell) Teerink of Sibley; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2023 also at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Interment will follow in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Following high school, she attended Dana College, and received her Master's Degree in Education. She was employed at Denison Community Schools for many years as a special ed teacher and was very devoted to her students.

From an early age, Diane was an animal lover. From helping her father with cattle to riding in horse shows to making sure the squirrels, birds, and any lost / feral kitties had food and shelter, she always had a special bond with all of God's creatures. She loved her indoor cats fiercely. Diane was also an avid quilter. She shared this passion with her family and friends and always had many ideas planned out for her next project. She loved Beatrix Potter, a good mystery novel, Frank Sinatra, and P. Buckley Moss paintings. She cherished her family and drew comfort from her faith in Jesus. She will be missed by family and friends from all over the world.

Diane passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, surrounded by her family. She was 78 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Vivian Hanson.

She is survived by her lifetime companion, Kieran Murphy, of Cork, Ireland; her son, Scott Schwade and his wife Jennifer; grandchildren: Josh (Shawna), Tim (Jessy), Nick (Alyssa), Luke (Jessica), Jake (Karrie), Miranda, Brandon (Mikayla), Ross (Shianne), and Lauren; great-grandchildren: Ariana, Everlynn, Peyton, Oakley, Kiley, and Dahlia; many other relatives and friends.

Per Diane's request, she has been cremated and there will be a private graveside service held in the Dow City Cemetery in early July.

Dr. Thomas Fake - April 10, 1941 - June 02, 2023

Obituary Preview: Dr. Thomas Michael Fake was born on April 10, 1941 to Clarence and Olive (Hudson) Fake in Casper, Wyoming. He attended school there and graduated from Natrona County High School, with the class of 1959. Tom attended Yale for two years and finished his bachelor's degree at the University of Iowa. He then went on to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, graduating in 1968.

Following his schooling, Dr. Thomas opened his practice in Denison, owning it for over 43 years. Dr. Tom was united in marriage to Idamae Brandenburg on October 13, 1978 at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Following their marriage, Dr. Thomas was baptized and later confirmed at Our Savior Lutheran Church. He obtained his pilot license, and the couple was able to fly to the Bahamas for their honeymoon, as well as travel to many different places abroad and within the United States.

Dr. Tom was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. He and Idamae volunteered their time as missionaries and traveled to the Philippines and Africa, where he provided dental services to the less fortunate. He loved all sorts of fishing, especially fly-fishing and bass fishing. In his younger years, he also enjoyed golfing and hunting. Dr. Tom was a gifted man who was able to complete any challenging puzzle put in front of him. One of his favorite pastimes was reading and he was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes Fan. Dr. Tom passed away on June 2, 2023 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 82 years, one month and 23 days.

Dr. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Simpson; and sister, Dianne Kidneigh. He is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Idamae Fake of Denison; children: Randi White of Paisley, Florida, Dani Fake of Denver, Colorado, Robert Carmichael of Casper, Wyoming, Stephen (Sheila) Brandenburg of Memphis, Tennessee, Diane (Keith) Winey of Dallas Center, Iowa, and Debra (Scott) Vosika of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: Dale Reed Kinney was born on August 20, 1944 in Denison, Iowa, the son of Reed and Evelyn (Andresen) Kinney. He was baptized on September 18, 1955 in Schleswig. When he was 16, he started his 40-year employment at Farm Best, later known as Farmland Foods.

On October 11, 1964, Dale was united in marriage to Faye Friedrichsen in Denison. To this union, they were blessed with two daughters: Kelly and Brandy. They made their home in Deloit and the couple later divorced. Dale was blessed with a second marriage to Penny Olson on April 20, 1991 at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Through this union, Dale gained a third daughter, Amanda. The family made their home in Denison.

Dale was a longtime faithful member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. He was an avid wood maker. He enjoyed going deer hunting, watching NASCAR, tending to his gardens and in his earlier years, fishing. He also was fond of watching all the wildlife in his backyard. Above all, he cherished his family more than anything.

Dale passed away unexpectedly at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, attaining the age of 78 years, 9 months, and 11 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Kinney; sister, Sharon Riley; parents-in-law, Warren and Alice Olson; and great-grandson, Iziah Jon.

Ronald Nollen - March 10, 1940 - May 27, 2023

Obituary Preview: Ronald Joseph Nollen was born the youngest of seven children, on March 10, 1940 to Michael and Frances (Thielen) Nollen on the family farm two and a half miles west of Defiance. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Catholic faith. Ron attended Defiance High School. He lived and helped on the family farm until he was 19 years old. In 1959, he moved into town. Ron married Patricia Ann Irwin on June 17, 1961 and four children were born to this union: Ann, Kathleen, Randy and Lee.

Ronnie worked for a local farmer hauling corn southwest of Earling. He then worked for his brother, Harry at his gas station in Harlan. He was later employed with Squealer Feeds, Farmland Foods, Long Horn Chemical and lastly, Packer's Sanitation Services at Dubuque Packing. Ron traveled to 54 different packing plants within the United States, associated with Packer's Sanitation Services. He was proud of his continuing education he took through seminars.

Ron married Sharon Rogers in June of 1981 and the couple made their home in Vail. A few years following their divorce, Ron married his love from high school, Ruth Kohles on February 9, 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple moved to Vail where they opened "Jack's Place". In 1992, they sold their bar and moved to Harlan. Ron was involved in a near-fatal automobile accident forcing him to retire at 54 years old. In 1999, the couple moved to Westphalia and built their forever home.

Ron was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. He enjoyed traveling to different local casinos and playing slot machines next to Ruthi. He loved visiting about classic cars. Listening to music was one of his favorite pastimes. He looked forward to Monday nights when he could watch WWE wrestling. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family.

Ron passed away on May 27, 2023 at Gracewell - Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 83 years, two months and 17 days.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lee Nollen; wife, Ruthi Nollen in 2020; and five siblings. He is survived by three children: Ann (Don) Motley of Eagle Grove, Kathy Finney of Arvada, Colorado and Randy Nollen of Westphalia; eight grandchildren: Landis (Tana) Motley and their children, Matthew and Olivia of Eagle Grove, Andrew Motley and his dog, Herky of Eagle Grove, Kelsey Motley (Ryan Ballman) of Portland, Oregon, Collin Finney and Aidan Finney both of Arvada, Colorado, Julia Nollen of Earling, Maggie Nollen of Teltow, Germany, and Alex Nollen of Westphalia; sister, Marilyn (Ed) Goeser of Harlan; sister-in-law, Shirley Nollen of Harlan; and many other relatives and friends.

Lee Rasmussen - August 12, 1944 - May 26, 2023

Obituary Preview: Lee Arnold Rasmussen was born August 12, 1944, the son of Elliott and Amanda (Wiechman) Rasmussen in Audubon, Iowa. In 1963, he graduated from Atlantic High School. Lee joined the Air Force in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1967. After he returned home for the service, Lee worked for Larson and Charlotte as a brick tender. In 1969, he started his employment as an Electrician for the City of Ames Power Plant and retired in 2010.

In 1968, Lee was united in marriage to Judy McAtee and they were blessed with two daughters, Keri and Lori. On July 26, 1986, he was united in marriage to Mary Larimore and she presented him with three other children: David, Dawn, and Douglas.

Lee was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Ames where he was a faithful member for many years. He was also a longtime member of the Ames American Legion. Lee enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating, cooking, and riding his motorcycle. He loved spending time with his children, especially his grandchildren. They made many memories golfing, lighting firecrackers, and the many stories Lee would share with them.

Lee passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 26, 2023 at the Rolling Green Village in Nevada, at the age of 78 years. Lee was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Myrna Kersey, Karen Rasmussen, Ronald Rasmussen, Ernest Rasmussen, and Linda Hennick.

Obituary Preview: Jean Norene Koenck was born on August 22, 1947 in Denison, Iowa. She was the daughter of Earl and Ila (Bledsoe) Wiebers. Jean attended Ar-We-Va Community School and graduated with the class of 1965.

In 1966, Jean was united in marriage to Gary Carlson in Westside, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with three children: Joel, Kristie, and Benjamin. They made their home in Kiron, Iowa. Later the couple divorced and Jean was blessed with a second marriage to Raynard Koenck on April 17, 1981, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Jean. She worked unselfishly as a housewife and mother for many years, always ready to extend hospitality to anyone who stopped by. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. Jean, Ray, Kristie and Ben moved to Colorado in 1986 where she cleaned homes. After the kids graduated high school, Jean and Ray Moved back to Iowa where they lived in Harlan, Audubon, Westside, Boyer, and Lakeview. For health reasons Jean moved to Yankton, South Dakota in 2018 to be closer to her son Joel.

Ray and Jean built The Barn in Boyer together. She would cook a specialty of hers; hamburgers with her homemade buns for the customers. Many people would come from miles away to enjoy live music, dance, eat and drink. Jean was an artist and mostly painted nature scenes on everything from saw blades to barn boards and much more. Jean also enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening, playing cards, dancing, bowling, fishing, playing softball and cooking. She liked to decorate her home with many plants and cook for Christmas. She was a member of TOPS, bowling league, and garden club. She was an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR and the Denver Broncos. Above all, she cherished her family more than anything.

Jean passed away peacefully on May 24, 2023 at the Majestic Bluffs Nursing Home in Yankton, South Dakota, attaining the age of 75 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raynard Koenck; and younger brother, Earl "Butch" Wiebers, Jr.

Obituary Preview: Helen Jean (Meyer) Haase was born on April 19, 1934, the daughter of William and Josephine (Bahnsen) Meyer. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 19, 2023 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, attaining the age of 89 years.

Helen was born on the family farm south of Westside, Iowa, where she grew up. She was baptized in infancy at the St. John's Evangelical Church in Westside and confirmed there in April of 1948. She received her education from the Hayes Township School.

On June 18, 1953, Helen was united in marriage to Herman Haase at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where they have remained faithful members. They lived on the family farm west of Denison and they were blessed with four sons. Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, cherishing time spent with family. She treasured family gatherings, especially on holidays and birthdays. She loved making special birthday cakes, Christmas cookies and caramels for family and friends. She was most known for her delicious cream puffs, fruit pizza, and cinnamon rolls; always willing to make them upon request. Helen spent many weekends doing demos at No Frills Super Market, which she thoroughly enjoyed and always looked forward to.

For many years, Helen had much joy babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A few of their favorite pastimes were staying overnight and having Grandma make them homemade pancakes or asking her to take them out to eat. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sewing baby quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she always eager to help them with various projects. She will be missed by all her family and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman Haase in December of 2005; son, Dean Haase in July of 2003; brothers: Dean Meyer and his wife, Donna; Edward Meyer and his wife, Melvina; and Glen Meyer and his wife, Deloris; sister, Verna Thiedeman and her husband, Orville; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Haase; Elvira Hansen and her husband, Raymond; and Adeline Koenck and her husband Floyd.

She is survived by her three sons: Douglas Haase and his wife, Deborah; David Haase and his wife, Michele; and Daniel Haase and his wife, Jackie, all of Denison; seven grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with burial to follow in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Obituary Preview: Dustin Pope, affectionately known as Panda, was born on December 17, 1990 in Denison, Iowa. He was the son of Keith "Shorty" and Marcia (Kluver) Pope. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron. He attended Odebolt-Arthur High School, where he graduated in 2009.

For many years, Dustin was a farmhand at Waldemar Farms while still in high school and continued there until he began his truck driving career. He began driving for Hoefling Trucking until he purchased his first truck and Pope Trucking was born. He built his business and eventually it was necessary for him to stay off the road and dispatch. At that time, he began to dabble in custom cattle feeding and Pope Cattle was formed. Dustin worked hard and he played hard. He would give you the shirt off his back and had friends all over the United States from his trucking adventures. He was happiest in the driver's seat of one of his trucks or on a tractor out among the cattle.

On Monday, May 15, 2023, Dustin passed away suddenly at his farm in Schleswig at the age of 32 years, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and kindness. Dustin was a cheerful individual with a distinct personality who was never ashamed to display it. He had a great sense of humor and was always ready for a laugh. He will greatly be missed by his family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by both his parents, Keith "Shorty" and Marcia Pope; maternal grandfather, Everett Kluver; paternal grandparents: Jack and Betty Pope; aunts: Karen Irlbeck and Donna Kluver; uncles: Kevin Pope who was a second dad to him, Eddie Kluver, and Donald "Butch" Kluver.

Dustin is survived by his aunts: Kathy Pope Diersen and her husband Don of Kiron, Kristy Munden and her husband Jim of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Bonnie Harper and her husband Bill of Denison; maternal grandmother, Phyllis Kluver of Kiron; cousins: Jason, Derrick, Justin, Jordan, Jeremy, Taylor, Jenny, Chad, Eric, and Jake; Dustin's four-legged companion, Waffles; along with the Pope Trucking and Pope Cattle family and many friends near and far.

Visitation with Family Greeting Friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery in Kiron. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Judie received her education from Battle Creek High School and graduated with the class of 1959. Following high school, she worked at McGuire Auction in Holstein.

Judie married Donald Clausen on August 3, 1963 at St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. The couple made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of three children: Shelley, Stacey and Scott. Judie took on in-home babysitting after she became a mother, which she enjoyed very much. She then decided to start working outside her home and was employed by Farmer's Mutual Insurance Company as the secretary. It was no secret that when you saw Judie, you saw Don. The couple remained best friends from the first day they met. They were filled with joy every day they were able to spend together and they were thankful that they were able to retire at the same time.

Judie was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. In her younger years, you could find her dancing, bowling and golfing. She spent a few years teaching Sunday school. She loved her weekly Bridge card club with friends. Judie was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. One of her favorite pastimes was riding in the golf cart with Don at the Schleswig Golf Course. Above all, she appreciated spending time with her family. She especially cherished being a grandma and great-grandma.

Judie passed away at her home in Schleswig on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at the age of 82 years and 13 days.

Judie was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Norman "Gail" Andresen; and sister, Patricia Bock. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Don Clausen of Schleswig; three children: Shelley (Rod) Segebart of Gowrie, Stacey Dimig of Schleswig, and Scott (Amanda) Clausen of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren: Derrick Dimig, Alyssa Dimig, Dylan Dimig, Miranda Segebart, Marissa Segebart, Arrick Clausen, Holden Clausen, and Ashtyn Clausen; six great-grandchildren: Kyza, KieLee, Rhett, Lux, Antonio, and Atlee; and many other relatives and friends.

He could always be called by his close friends to watch their kids so they could have a fun night out.

Nathan passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 45 years, one month and four days.

Nathan was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his brother, John C. "JC" Mulligan of Denison; three aunts: Connie Mulligan of Deloit, San (Doug) Swanger of Le Mars; Shelli (Keith) Bebee of Luton; several cousins; and other family members and friends.
