Obituary Preview: The funeral service for Gloria Baumann, 60, of Tracy, will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Christ Lutheran Church in Marshall. Visitation will be Friday, October 15, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall and Saturday, one hour prior to the service, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. Gloria Gail Bass was born to Harold and Verna (Rients) Bass on April 9, 1961. She became a child of God through the waters of Holy Baptism on September 23, 1961, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rost Township, MN. On April 27, 1975, Gloria publicly confessed her baptismal faith in the rite of Confirmation. She attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Rost through eighth grade and graduated from Lakefield High School in 1979. She went on to attend Jackson Vo-Technical School for general clerical studies.

Gloria was united in holy matrimony to her high school sweetheart Karl Baumann on June 14, 1980. God blessed their marriage with five children. Gloria frequently volunteered at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Fulda, MN, where her children attended. She was an active member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and enjoyed ladies bible study. One of Gloria’s favorite Bible passages was Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” (NKJV) Gloria drove a school van for 4.0 Bus Service and worked with the food service at Tracy Elementary School until her retirement in 2019. She enjoyed gardening and canning her harvest. She also enjoyed camping and fishing with her family each summer. After a battle with ALS, the Lord graciously called Gloria home to heaven on October 11, 2021.

Gloria was preceded in death by her grandson Isaac Baumann, granddaughter Grace Baumann, sister Ann Bass and parents. She is survived by her husband of 41 years Karl, her children; Lance (Leah) Baumann of Heron Lake, MN, Andrew (Danette) Baumann of Brandon, SD, Jared (Marissa) Baumann of Nicollet, MN, Emily (Jonathan) Mayer of Cochrane, WI, and Adam (Kallie) Baumann of Marshall, MN, 16 grandchildren, siblings Ruth, Kathy, David, Janna, Paul and Edith and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Betty Lou (Harbo) Foster was born on November 13, 1930, in Tracy, to Oliver and Marie (Klucking) Harbo. She grew up on a farm near Tracy and attended country school. Betty was united in marriage to Lindy Haugen and to this union were born Linda, Kathleen, Charles, Pam, Georgia and Abbie. Betty worked as a baker for the Tracy Bakery and later at the Tracy Nursing Home. She will be remembered for her cookies, lefsa and fried bread dough with icing. She also did ironing, cleaning, and worked at the Tracy Laundromat. On November 16, 1983, she was married to Keye Foster. Betty was a master quilter and donated may quilts to her church. She was an active member of Willow Lake Lutheran Church and later Tracy Lutheran Church. Betty enjoyed playing the phase 10 dice game. She was most passionate about time with her family.

Betty died on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at the Prairie View Healthcare Center in Tracy. She is survived by her children Linda (and Gene) Tordsen of Sauk Centre, Kathleen (and Andrew) Peterson of Glenwood, Chuck (and Liz) Haugen of Slayton, Pam Haugen of Currie, Georgia Hansen of Springfield and Abbie (and Scott) Stirn of Currie; grandchildren Jason Tordsen, Jenny Dreger, Lori Agar, Lonnie DeSmith, Shawn DeSmith, Travis DeSmith, Sarah McNamara, Chuckie Haugen Jr., Aaron Haugen, Andrew Haugen, Jessica Kruse, M’Hesi Haugen, Abel Haugen, Talia Haugen, Darin Hansen, Joshua Stirn, Sheena Schons, numerous great and great-great grandchildren, siblings Elsie Zimmerman of Tyler, Beverly (Jim) Donner of Tracy, Joan Byers of Revere, sister-in-law Janet Harbo, sister-in-law Jocelyn Harbo and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Alvin Marvin Kleven - January 12, 1924 - July 17, 2021

Alvin Marvin Kleven was born on January 12, 1924, on the family farm in Ann Township to Albert and Emma (Knudson) Kleven. Alvin was an only child, but he and his cousins Margie and Darrell were raised as siblings. Alvin grew up on the farm and attended country school district 43 through eighth grade. He then attended Walnut Grove High School, lettering in basketball, football, and baseball, graduating in 1941. Alvin started farming during his senior year, and he especially loved his horses. While in Minneapolis visiting friends, Alvin met Dorothy Benson, the roommate of his friend’s sister. They were married at the parsonage in Westbrook on June 22, 1946.

Alvin was a skilled horseman, and he owned horses from the age of 16 until he was 80. He was a charter member of the Plum Creek Saddle Club and the Westbrook Heritage House. He also enjoyed woodworking, and a carving club met at their home for many years. Alvin also rebuilt buggies and often went hunting up north. Alvin enjoyed the outdoors, and he and Dorothy took their four children on a two week camping trip every year.

Alvin died on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Our House of Murray County in Slayton. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Dorothy of Walnut Grove; daughter Lynette (Doug) Smith of Sand Springs, OK; sons Doug (Carolyn) Kleven of Parker, CO, Bruce Kleven of Sacred Heart, and Craig (Linda) Kleven of Walnut Grove; grandchildren Shannon Hanks, Colleen Ladd, Wade Kleven, Weston Kleven, Ross Kleven, Brian Kleven, Justin Kleven, Brandon Kleven, Ashley Wahl, Dawn Scott, and John Scarset; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Emma, and his siblings Margie (Knudson) Bakken and Darrell Knudson.

Visitation will continue on Friday, one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Lake Sarah Lutheran Church in Garvin. Interment will follow the cemetery at the Willow Lake Cemetery in Currie.

Bruce Charles Wahl was born on June 11, 1963, in Westbrook, MN, to Harley and Jane (Carr) Wahl. He grew up in Tracy and graduated from Tracy High School. After schooling, he worked a few jobs including in the propane industry in Worthington and for a tire company in the Twin Cities. He worked on the farm for Carl Lindberg, and for almost 30 years, worked for Sweetman Sand and Gravel in Currie. Bruce was a hard worker and was particularly good at his jobs. He was a lifelong animal lover. He tamed a family of raccoons as a child and had many special pets throughout his life. In 2019, he was united in marriage to Gwen Bjorklund in Currie.

Bruce died unexpectedly on Friday, July 9, 2021, at his residence in Currie. He is survived by his wife, Gwen, of Currie, parents Harley and Jane Wahl of Lake Shetek, son Bruce Wahl Jr. of the Bay Area in California, brother Dan Wahl of Madison, MN, sister Becky (and Mark) Beers of Rapid City, SD, special step-children: Autumn, Travis, and Ashley, also step-children Wendy, Eric, Cara and Matthew and step-grandchildren Lestat, Devyn, Max, Nora, Aubrey and Lane and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis.

Dean Wesley Ruebsam was born on September 12, 1932, in Balaton, to Elmer and Frances (Miller) Ruebsam. Dean grew up on the family farm near Balaton and graduated from Balaton High School. In 1953, he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Germany and England. On June 2, 1979, Dean was united in marriage to JoAnn Ehret at the Tracy Lutheran Church. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Tracy, with Dean commuting to work on the farm. He enjoyed every aspect of his farming operation, whether it be caring for his cattle, tending the fields, or admiring his old tractors. Dean especially enjoyed bringing his grandchildren out to the farm. He taught them to trapshoot, how to run the tractors, and took them on hay bale rides. In his younger years, Dean enjoyed dancing and playing cards with JoAnn and friends. He also enjoyed hunting.

Dean died on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy. He is survived by his wife JoAnn of Tracy; children LeRoy (Wanda) Biteler of Chanhassen and Nancy (Ken) LaBrie of Arlington, SD; grandchildren Justin (Tina) Biteler, Miranda (Alex) Kerbawy, Brandon (Kayla) LaBrie, and Clayton (Katie) LaBrie; great-grandchildren Jovi Biteler, Soraiya Kerbawy, ElliAnna LaBrie, and Paisley LaBrie; brother-in-law Palmer Eidem of Minneapolis; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lois Ruebsam and Arlys Eidem, and son Douglas Biteler.

De worked at a few jobs including as a Payroll Clerk for a garment factory in New Ulm, as a Bookeeper/Secretary for McCleary Auto Parts in New Ulm and Tracy, Whiting Lumber and Rupp Insurance. She also worked as a Beauty Counselor for Vanda. De was an active member of the Tracy Lutheran Church where she served as a Deacon, on the Church Council and as Treasurer of various circles. She also served on the Planning Committee of the Tracy Hospital. De enjoyed bowling, playing cards (especially whist, bridge, 500 or Schofkoph). She also enjoyed traveling including trips to California, Hawaii, Mexico, Washington and Florida. De enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She liked to entertain and especially with her family.

De died unexpectedly at her residence on Thursday, April 29, 2021. She is survived by her sisters Irene McKelvey of Seattle, WA and Mary Haas of Springfield, MN; nieces Sandra (Bruce) Runck and Diane (Grant) Lade of Springfield; nephews Duane (Bev) Weedman of Tracy and Randy (Midge) Haas of Redwood Falls, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; sister Gertrude Weedman; brothers-in-law Lisle McKelvey, Kenneth Weedman, Emil Haas, and great-nephew Daniel Runck.

Dennis Schumacher passed away April 12, 2021 at Unity Hospital in Fridley, MN.

Dennis was born in Tracy, MN, to Roy and Helen (Longstrom) Schumacher on Nov 9, 1932. Dennis attended Tracy Public Schools. He graduated with the Class of ’50. He then joined the Navy, spending three years serving his country. In 1955, he met MaryAnn DeBlieck, and they married in 1956. They moved to Minneapolis, where he attended the University of MN, graduating with a BS Degree in Business. Many years of work in sales & real estate followed. They had four children: Dirk (Kathy), Dean (Cindy), JulieAnn, and David (Amy). In 1982, they moved to Coon Lake Beach where they purchased Coon Lake Market. After 36 years they sold Coon Lake Market and retired. Dennis was an avid hunter. He spent many years hunting with his sons and going on road trips. He was a collector and spent many hours buying and selling on E-Bay. He also spent much time with his best buddy, his dog, Sue.

Dennis is survived by his wife, MaryAnn, four children and spouses, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Helen Schumacher; his grandfather and grandmother, Emelia and Gustaf Longstrom; aunt and uncle, Edward & Agnes Almjeld; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Julius and Grace DeBlieck; and great-grandson, Dakotah Schumacher.

The funeral service for Chester “Chet” Petersen, 90, of Walnut Grove, will be Saturday, April 17, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton. A recording of the service will be available at www.horvathfuneralservice.com. A walk-through visitation will take place at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Tracy on Friday, April 16, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment with military honors will be after the service at the Ruthton City Cemetery. Mask and social distancing requirements will be observed at all services.

Chester “Chet” Munkholm Petersen was born August 20, 1930, to Jorgen Munkholm and Dora Christine (Christensen) Petersen in Etna Township, Pipestone County. Twins Mikkelsen cousins were born the same day. He had five siblings: Roy, Myrtle Gruis, Bert, Clarence, and Gordon. Gordon of Arco survives him. He attended school in Ruthton, and as a teenager worked for local farmers. He served in the Army 1952-1954 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On June 11, 1955, he married Barbara Amby Doty at the Presbyterian Church in Russell. To this union were born: Amy (Mrs. Michael McCoy) of Tracy, Wendy Petersen Biorn of Rockford, Rebecca Petersen Guzman of New Ulm, and Chad Petersen of St. Louis Park; grandchildren Erin McCoy of Tracy, David (Christine) McCoy of Hastings, Virginia Biorn of Jersey City, New Jersey, Tiffiney Biorn (Ryan Leberknight) of Burnsville, and Dain Biorn of Minneapolis.

Chet farmed his whole married life (65 years in 2020), enjoying the farm life of cattle, various crops, garden, pets, etc. Chet walked their mile of gravel every day even in Winter (total of 2 miles). People commented on his walking as they drove by and waved. Chet and Barb traveled extensively starting in 1980 when the children were older. They were in Hawaii twice, Alaska, Mexico three times, Canada, on a Caribbean cruise, and to Europe two times, once to the Belgium wedding of Wendy’s exchange student. They also took tours of the U.S. and car trips with Barb as the navigator. They enjoyed traveling and experiencing new things.

Chet was an avid bowler for many years, bowling in leagues in Ruthton and Tyler. He also enjoyed pitching horseshoe throughout the area. Chet served on the board of the creamery in Russell for 12 years. He also was a board member of Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton and served on the Coon Creek Township Board. In January 2019, they entered Country View Senior Living in Walnut Grove, had a farm auction in June 2019, and sold their building site to their great-nephew. Everyone liked Chet. He was a kind man who thought of others before himself. He was proud of his Danish heritage and considered himself 100% Danish! He was proud of his family and their accomplishments!

Chet passed away Thursday, April 8, 2021, at Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.

The family would like to thank Prairie View Senior Living and Maddie from Avera at Home Hospice for their compassionate care of Chet.

The memorial service for Tena Quigley, 92, of Tracy will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2021, at the Horvath Remembrance Center (444 Craig Ave) in Tracy. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at the Tracy Community Cemetery. Masks are required at all indoor events. Tena was called home on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at the Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Tena E. Visker Quigley was born on August 18, 1928, in White, South Dakota to Eltjo and Katherine (Dilly) Visker. She grew up on a farm near Lake Shetek. Tena graduated from Tracy and was baptized at the Church of Christ in Tracy.

On August 30, 1947, she was united in marriage to George Quigley at the Church of Christ in Tracy. They farmed near Walnut Grove for several years and then moved to a farm near Garvin. In 1978, they moved to Tracy and she worked at the Christian Manor, later Prairieview Senior Living Center in Tracy until her retirement.

Tena was a long time member and Sunday School Teacher at the Church of Christ in Tracy where she also played piano. After her retirement, she enjoyed having coffee with family and friends. She really enjoyed her grandkids and great-grandkids of which she had eleven. She is survived by her children, Mary (and Larry) Halverson of Waseca, Karen (and Neil) Jensen of Rogers, grandchildren Amy (and Brian) Schumacher, Eric (and Michelle) Jensen, Tara (and Dan) Stella and Kurt Halverson (friend Natalie,) great-grandchildren Breanna, Brooke, Harper, Tony, Jack, Austin and Amelia. Also survived by brothers Jans and Joe. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eltjo and Katherine; husband George; sisters Dorothy, Jenny, Grace, Fannie and Marie and brothers Henry and John.

Tena will be dearly missed by many.

Obituary Preview: A visitation celebrating the life of Ardys “Ardy” Williams, 89, of Tracy, will be Friday, June 18, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will take place Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Hoiland Lutheran Cemetery in Tracy, near Garvin, at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow at Bitton’s Roadhouse in Garvin.

Ardys “Ardy” Joanne (Weaver) Williams was born on January 18, 1931, to Edward and Mabel (Jones) Weaver near Garvin. She was baptized and confirmed at Hoiland Lutheran Church in Garvin. She attended country school district 85 in Garvin and graduated from Tracy High School in 1949. Ardy met her husband-to-be, Clair “Billy” Williams, in the pool hall in Garvin. They were married on August 18, 1949, and they had three children, Donald, Julie, and JoAnn.

Ardy was a member of Lake Sarah Lutheran Church in Garvin, where she taught Sunday School, was an officer in the Ladies Aid, was on the church council as financial secretary for many years, and sang in the choir. She was more recently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton.

Ardy worked at Glen’s Superette in Balaton in the late 1950s. She worked in Ken’s SuperValu and John’s SuperValu as Produce Manager until she retired in 1993, at age 62. Ardy returned to work at Tracy Food Pride in 1999, and she also worked in the Walmart Jewelry Department before retiring again at age 82 in 2013. Ardy enjoyed her work family, especially Bruce and Dawn’s family.

Ardy enjoyed reading, and doing fancy work like crocheting and quilting. Ardy quilted with Lake Sarah quilters in Garvin. She enjoyed music, especially playing piano, guitar, and accordion. Ardy and Bill took many road trips visiting family throughout the United States. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passing on her love of sewing and music.

Ardy was a member of the Garvin Centennial Committee for the 100th and 125th years. She was mother-in-law to the Garvin Miss Tootsie in the 125th celebration.

Ardy’s husband Bill passed away on April 6, 2006. After Bill’s death, Ardy remained on the family farm until 2014, when she moved to Balaton. In 2018, Ardy moved to O’Brien Court in Tracy. She moved to Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy in the Spring of 2020 after a short illness requiring rehab.

Ardy died peacefully on January 7, 2021, 11 days short of her 90th birthday, from complications due to COVID, at Prairie View Senior Living. She is survived by her sister Donna Baird of Tracy; son Donald Williams of Mentone, CA; daughters Julie (Scott) Sanow of Garvin and JoAnn Williams of St. Paul; grandchildren Jennifer (Tom) Pint of Wadena, Nicole (Chuck) Swanson of Balaton, Jesse Buchholz of Tracy, and Amanda (Scott) Kepley of Charleston, SC; great-grandchildren Alex, Avery, and Olivia Pint, Marissa Olson, Amaya and Zachary Swanson, Austin and Alexis Buchholz; and great-great-grandchild Cade Pint. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, and sister Virginia Saxton.

The funeral service for Earl Weedman, 65, of Tracy, will be Monday, December 28, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Tracy. A livestream of the service will be available by clicking the Watch Webcast link under the Photos & Videos tab above. A walk-through visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Mask and social distancing requirements will be observed at all services.

Elmer Earl Weedman was born on June 3, 1955, in Tracy, to Elmer and Donna (Wreath) Weedman. The family lived on a farm west of Tracy until he was three, when they moved to farm south of Milroy. As a child, he enjoyed fishing and riding on the tractor with his father. Earl attended the Crippled Children School in Worthington, then graduated from Tracy High School. After graduation, Earl lived in the Twin Cities, then Marshall for a time, before moving to his current residence in Tracy. Earl was known to go to work, then sit outside and visit with those walking by and wave at passing cars. Everyone knew Earl, and he could make anyone laugh. He enjoyed sports, especially watching and playing baseball.

Earl died on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at the Sanford Tracy Hospital. He is survived by his siblings Richard (Sandra) of Lamberton, Pat (Gerry) Buse of St. James, David (Joanne) of Waybridge, Vermont, Peg Stock of Montevideo, and Todd (friend Sandy) of Salisbury, Vermont; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Diane, and sister-in-law Grace Weedman.

A graveside service for Verna Swift, 100, of Tracy, formerly of Balaton, will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Bethel Cemetery in Garvin.

Verna Pearl Swift was born March 8, 1920, in Garvin, Minnesota, the daughter of Pete and Pearl (Olson) Engesser. She was a 1937 graduate of Tracy High School.

Verna worked as a clerk at Holden’s Grocery Store in Garvin for three years after High School.

In December 1941, Verna married Raymond Swift. They had four children together: Sandra, Douglas, Steven and Jeffery and resided in Balaton, Minnesota.

She always had a big garden, which provided for food for the family. Verna enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining family and friends. She also loved to dance and listen to music.

As the children grew older, Verna acquired a job cooking for the Balaton School where she worked for nearly 20 years. She was delighted to have her own retirement income.

Verna was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Balaton Home Extension Club, and was a member of the Garvin Congregational Church.

Verna died on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy. Surviving is daughter Sandra of Marcellus, Michigan, two sons Douglas (Bev) Swift of Balaton, and Jeffery (Lori) Swift of Hutchinson, and daughter-in-law Kathy of Balaton. Verna is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Sue, Jamie, Missy, Lesa (Delroy), Sarah (Joe), Jennifer (Trent), Nathan (Katie), and Jason. She enjoyed seventeen great grandchildren: Britney (Oscar), Aquari, Alaila, Esden, Kaeler, Kayla, Mason, Tyson, Keegan, Malia, Matthew, Katherine, Brynn, Lyla, Ray, Harper and Hudson. Verna was also blessed with great-great grandchildren: Aubri and Oscar. Surviving siblings are a sister Shirley Martin and sisters-in-law Betty Engesser, Jeanene Swift and Virginia Swift. Verna was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, son Steven, parents Pete and Pearl Engesser, sister Vesta Ahlmjeld, brothers Whitey, Earl and Jerry Engesser.

John Eltjo Visker was born on Friday, May 2, 1924 in Little Rock, Iowa, the son of Eltjo and Katherine (Dilly) Visker. He attended country school through the 8th grade. He did not like school and was a farmer heart and soul. John met the love of his life, Joyce, when he went into the local soda fountain shop where Joyce was working and he ordered a milkshake (which, by the way, he was never charged for). They married on July 29, 1944 at her parent’s home in Tracy. This union was blessed with four children: Katherine, Betty Jo, JoAnn and Jon Dirk.

The couple did everything together. They worked together as they raised livestock and were stewards of the land they farmed. John later owned Visker Oil Company and the Garvin Corner Truck Stop and Café. He was a bus driver for Tracy Public Schools for 35 years. He served on the Tracy Nursing Home Board of Directors for several years. He was active in the Church of Christ as a deacon, board member and Sunday School Superintendent. When not busy working and raising a family, John enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and spending time with his family. He has been described as a kind, gentle and honest man. He will be dearly missed by his children and their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of friends.

John passed away peacefully surrounded by family and was welcomed into Heaven by God’s loving arms on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the age of 96 years, 5 months and 20 days.

John is survived by his children, Katherine Holland, Betty Jo (Warren) Troseth, JoAnn (Steven) Knott, Jon Dirk (Jeanie) Visker; grandchildren, Jennifer Krostue, Tom (Melissa) Meixell, Jill (Lynn) Wess, Laura (Louis) duCharme, Weston (Katie) Troseth, Mary Lynn (Toby) Howard, Sarah (Chad) Kemp, Jeffrey (Jeanne) Knott, Andrew (Sue) Knott, Christopher (Stephanie) Visker, Joseph (Erin) Visker, Eric (Liz) Visker, twenty-six great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; sister, Tena Quigley; brothers, Jans and Joe.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Eltjo and Katherine; his wife, Joyce; sisters, Dorothy, Jennie, Grace, Fannie and Marie; and brother, Henry.

Elffie Mae Kopperud was born on September 18, 1921, in Rosehill Township to Ernest and Bertha (Bloch) Rachuy. She was baptized and confirmed at First Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church in Westbrook. Elffie attended Country School District 59 in Rosehill Township. The family moved to the Bloch family farm southwest of Westbrook in 1937. Elffie left school after eighth grade to assist on the family farm. As a young woman, Elffie worked in various capacities as a housekeeper, baby sitter, at the Jack Sprat Grocery Store in Westbrook and as a Husker in the Rochester Corn Canning Factory.

On June 9, 1950, Elffie was married to Truman Kopperud at the American Lutheran Church (now Grace Lutheran) in Westbrook. The couple made their home on a farm in Ann Township near Westbrook from 1950 to 1981 when they retired and moved to Westbrook. Elffie was an active member of Old Westbrook Lutheran Church, holding offices in the Ladies’ Aide, and in the Shetek Conference Women’s Organization. She was a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, and she sang in the choir. Elffie and Truman enjoyed volunteer work including driving for RSVP for many years. She was an active member of the local Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer Hair Dresser at Good Samaritan Society in Westbrook.

Elffie was especially passionate about her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Obituary Preview: A private family graveside funeral service and interment for Jacqueline “Jackie” Deal, 88, of Tracy, will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020, at the Tracy Community Cemetery.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Mae Deal was born on February 25, 1932, at Tracy Hospital, the daughter of Ervin and Lucille Reinert. She was baptized at Tracy Methodist Church where she was a lifelong member. Jackie attended country school District 16 in Shetek Township for 7 years, then went to school in Tracy starting in 8th grade and graduating in 1950. Following high school, she worked two years for Doctors Valentine and Remsburg. She then enrolled at Mankato State University, graduating with honors in 1956 with a degree in Home Economics & Science.

Jackie married Harold D. Deal on June 30, 1956, at Tracy Methodist Church. They lived on Harold’s home farm outside of Walnut Grove for 40 years before moving into their new home in Tracy in December 1996. They were named Redwood County Farm Family of the Year in 1994.

Jackie started teaching home economics at Walnut Grove High School in 1956, where she taught for three years. After David and Susan were born, she taught Home Economics in Balaton for one year. She then returned to Walnut Grove school as a Title One teacher for many years, then later as a classroom aide. She retired in 1997, having been at Walnut Grove School for 33 years.

Jackie was active at Tracy Methodist Church as a Sunday School Teacher, Financial Secretary, Ladies Circle, and chair of the Flower Show for many years. Jackie was a leader of the Springdale Climbers 4-H Club for several years. She belonged to the Redwood County Home Ec Club for over 40 years. Jackie always had vegetable and flower gardens on the farm, and she canned and froze vegetables. She loved to sew and do craft projects. She sewed many of her own clothes, as well as those for Susan. She made hand stitched quilts and wall hangings and gave quilts as gifts to family members.

Obituary Preview: June Esther (Wegner) Gilb was born on a farm in Johnsonville Township, rural Lucan, MN, on March 1, 1943. She was the youngest of three girls born to Fred and Hilda (Siedshlag) Wegner. She was baptized and confirmed at Johnsonville Trinity Church. June attended District #14 country school in rural Vesta, Lucan Public School, and graduated from Milroy Public School. June was united in marriage to Kenneth Gilb on April 19, 1961, at Johnsonville Trinity Church.

June worked eight years at Swift’s Plant, one year at Alco, and seventeen and a half years at Schwan’s; all of Marshall, as well as being active in family farming. She held various positions in her churches, enjoyed country music, writing, dancing, decorating, coffee with friends, being outside, helping others, time with family, and was a good listener.

June died on Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Our House of Murray County in Slayton, MN. She is survived by her son Todd (Lori) Gilb of Walnut Grove, daughters Kori (Bill) Robinson of Slayton, Dawn Giese of Albert Lea, and Debi (Jeff) Holloway of Dahlonega, GA; seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; and sisters Jean Kahnke of Courtland and Joan Lanoue of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth in 1998, and daughter Jodi in 2014.

Wilma Darlene (Dempsey) Ford was born on May 20, 1926, in Great Falls, MT, to Glen and Ruth (Mefferd) Dempsey. The family lived in Litchfield and Pipestone before moving to Tracy when Dar was 12 years old. She graduated from Tracy High School and attended St. Theresa’s College in Winona. Dar fell in love and married James “Jim” Ford. While Jim was serving in the Navy, the couple lived in San Diego and Corpus Christi, and after his honorable discharge they returned to Tracy. Together, they operated Ford Real Estate and Insurance. When Dar was 50, she and two of her friends opened Mother’s Antiques and had a successful 10-year run.

Dar loved and adored her family. She was eternally in their corner through thick and thin. Whenever one of her children or grandchildren entered, her face would light up like the star she was. The welcoming she gave her family was always complete with hugs, kisses, laughter, inclusion and joy. Her Christmases alone were one for the record books. One of her favorite sayings after being with family was, “That was one of the most fun days I have ever had.” Dar had so many talents and passions, including music, art and her love for antiques. On a daily basis, music was on high when entering her house, paint brushes were on the kitchen table or being cleaned in the sink, sheet music was ready to be played on the piano, and pages from interior magazines were tagged for inspiration for future projects. She was in pure bliss when she could get her hands on an old dresser and turn it into something spectacular. Dar had a flare for fashion as well as travel. Whether it be a small town in the Midwest or a grand European city, she had an inquisitive eye for culture and design. Dar found much joy in her love of faith and the church. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she volunteered and sang in the choir. She brought that love of singing into the car, home and of course, sing alongs with her grandchildren. She had that special gift of connecting with you and making you feel like you were the most important person in the world. She was goofy, fun loving, adorable, easy going, lovely, and kind. There are not enough adjectives to fully explain our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was that special woman that you always wanted to sit next to.

Ten years ago, Dar moved to Minneapolis for her healthcare. Because of Alzheimer’s, she moved to Jones Harrison Senior Living in Minneapolis. In all stages of dementia, Dar’s spirit and depth of kindness still shone through the veil of the disease. She was one of the favorites on the wing as she always found humor and love in her communication and relationships. She died peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2020. She is survived by a grateful crew as we are the lucky ones to have had her in our life. Her children Pennelton (and Rick) Spano of Lawrence, KS, Pat (and Carol) Ford of Dent, Angela Surprenant (and Bob Schoenbaum) of Edina, Colin Ford of Minneapolis, Vincent Ford of Minneapolis; grandchildren Jake (and Cate), Katie, James (and Sara), Anna, Molly, Nathan, Courtney, Shawn and Omarr, and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and in-laws.

Obituary Preview: Peemon Herr passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at her home in Tracy, Minnesota after years of battling cancer.

Peemon was born on November 23, 1971, in the City of Pua, Nun in Thailand to Wichian and Pra (Thao) Yangsaeng. She came to Christ and got baptized in 1985. After graduating high school in 1989, she moved to Chang Mai to help her sister babysit. In 1992, Peemon moved to Chiang Rai to work at a nonprofit orphanage called Happy Home. In 1993, she moved back to Chiang Mai to continue with her studies and graduated with an associate’s degree in computer programming in 1996. Throughout her time in Chiang Mai, she worked and served with Christian & Missionary Alliance (C&MA) missionaries as their secretary. While serving the Lord, she met her husband Rev. Jong Xiong Herr and got married on April 25, 1996. In October 1996, she immigrated to Kansas City, Kansas and later moved to Michigan in 1997 and gave birth to her daughter Selena. In December 2000, her family was called by the Lord to serve in Tracy, Minnesota, to what is now the Agape Hmong Alliance Church. While going back to school in 2002, she gave birth to her son Joshua. Peemon started translating for the Hmong community in Southwest Minnesota and after graduating with her LPN. In 2004, she started working for Tracy Sanford as a Wellness Interpreter until she passed. Peemon dedicated and loved her time at Tracy Sanford, and was honored with the employee of the year award in 2010.

Her greatest loves were reading the Bible, singing Hymns, holding conversations with people, her job, playing sports and being with family. She always brought joy to the room, had something wise to say, and encouraged others.

Peemon is survived by her father Wichian, husband Jong Xiong Herr, daughter Selena, son Joshua, sister Sophawadee (Tracy), other sisters, brothers, many nieces and nephews in Thailand. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pra.

Obituary Preview: Steve C Moua, age 65, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2020, at his home in Amiret, Minnesota. He was surrounded by family as his spirit floated away on a beautiful sunny morning. Steve passed from health complications.

Steve was born September 10, 1954, in the city of Vientiane, Laos to Xai Lor Moua and Ia (Xiong). In 1986, Steve immigrated to the United States for a better life with his family. Coming to the United States speaking no English, Steve attended nightly ESL classes. As a self-taught automotive mechanic, he co-owned a small used car sales lot in Green Bay, Wisconsin, allowing him to practice his love for repairing vehicles. Many nights and weekends, Steve could be found at family and friends’ homes, donating his time to fixing their vehicles. In 2000, the Moua family relocated to Marshall, Minnesota. Shortly after, Steve suffered a major stroke which left him with paralysis to the right side of his body and took his ability to speak. Nonetheless, Steve continued to enjoy life with his family and many grandchildren that were the light of his life.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers and 1 sister; son Peter; daughter Gao Hlee; daughter Panhia; son Pao; and wife Wa Vang. He is survived by his wife Cher (Lor); brother Blia-Thae (Yer) of Marshall; daughter Hnub (Yao Teng) of Laos; son Kao (Kara) of Green Bay, WI; son Kou (Kia) of Green Bay, WI; daughter Vee (Txoj Vaj) of Marshall; daughter See (Nick) of Marshall; son Souriya (Mai) of Tracy; daughter Joua (Cody) of Green Bay, WI; daughter Keo (Chris) of Marshall; daughter Pa Ia (Justin) of Wabasso; daughter Ong (Na) of Oakdale; daughter Nancy (Tre) of Marshall; son Pheng (Mai Xiong) of Tracy; daughter Mai Lay (Anthony) of Amiret; daughter Mena of Amiret; 40 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

Traditional Hmong funeral services and visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020, from 8 AM-10 PM, Sunday, March 15, 2020, from 8 AM- 10 PM, and Monday, March 16, 2020, at 8 AM at Horvath Funeral Service of Tracy. Interment will follow service and visitation on Monday and be held at the Marshall Cemetery.

His family holds memories of him close and will always remember his goofy personality, determination, love for Menard’s weekly ads, and that contagious laugh.

Gladys (Hinderman) Hahn was born on January 9, 1930, in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County, the fourth of five children born to Herbert and Lydia (Mielke) Hinderman. Glady’s family moved from Ridgely to Courtland in 1941 where she completed her schooling to the eighth grade. In 1946, they moved to New Ulm, MN, where she met her future husband, Joseph A. Hahn. The couple was married on May 17, 1947. They had one daughter, Julie, and four grandchildren. After the marriage, they moved to Tracy where Joe worked for the railroad. Gladys worked at Fairway Foods and for the phone company. Gladys worked at Fairway Foods and for the phone company. Later, she worked at Tracy Nursing Home for numerous years, along with multiple odd jobs. She was active in the VFW the Lions Club and Tracy Lutheran Church Auxiliary. Gladys moved to O’Brien Court in 2015. In 2019, she moved to Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy.

Gladys died on Thursday, February 6, 2020, at Prairie View Senior Living.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Julie (and Darell) Waltz of Prior Lake and her four grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Lester Hinderman of Brook Park, MN and sister-in-law Lois Bode of New Ulm. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, on December 17, 1993, her parents and siblings Roger, Ordell, Theal, and Lorraine Hulke.

Wendell was born on September 6, 1933, in Sibley, IA, to John and Emma (Vaupel) Trei and married his first wife, Eileen Cecilia DeBlieck on November 27, 1954. After Eileen’s passing in 2012, Wendell married his longtime family friend, Nancy Maxwell.

He is survived by his children: Debra (and Bill) Post, Denise (and John) DeLanghe, James Trei, Jeff Trei, Donna (and Todd) Morse, Michael (and Sonja) Trei, and Marc (and Pia) Trei, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and four siblings. He was preceded in death by both of his wives: Eileen and Nancy; two children Dianne and Jon; two sons-in-law Marvin Lindberg and Greg DeLanghe and a grandson Jeremiah Trei.

Wendell will be cremated and the family will hold a celebration of life in Tracy, MN, on December 7, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon to follow at The Caboose from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Darlene Farrell - December 17, 1933 - November 02, 2019

Darlene Ann (Hofstadter) Farrell was born on December 17, 1933, in Currie, MN, to Leo and Louise (Ackerman) Hofstadter. She grew up on the family farm in Holly Township and attended Country School District 46 and 27. Darlene graduated from Westbrook High School in May 1951, then attended Mankato Business School. She worked as a Secretary at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester for three years. Darlene was united in marriage to Duane Farrell on September 10, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church in Currie. The couple raised their five children on a farm in Skandia Township before moving to Balaton in 1976. Darlene worked winters at Swift’s in Marshall for several years, and she spent 24 years working at the Marshall Independent.

Darlene was proud of her garden on the farm, where she grew flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed stamp collecting, playing bingo, reading, and going to auctions. Darlene and Duane enjoyed traveling in their camper, especially their trip to Alaska. Darlene was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Tracy and St. Mary’s at Lake Wilson, where she served as secretary to the Ladies Guild. She was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary. Darlene and Duane moved to Parkview Manor in Ellsworth in 2010, and Duane died in January 2011.

Obituary Preview: Vera (Molle) Wendorff was born on December 24, 1922, at home in Garvin to William and Clara (Pihl) Molle. She attended grade school in Garvin and graduated from Tracy High School in 1940. On July 11, 1946, she was united in marriage to Gordon Wendorff in Tracy. The couple farmed and raised their family in Amiret Township. In 1983, they moved into Tracy. Vera worked as a bookkeeper at the Garvin Creamery and also lived in Spokane, WA, for a time before her marriage. She later worked at various jobs in Lyon County. Vera loved music and learned to play the accordion while in high school. She also enjoyed sewing from an early age. She made many garments for family and friends. She also made hundreds of quilts and gave many as gifts to recipients including family, friends, Ronald McDonald houses and nursing home residents. Vera enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning and taking care of her family.

Vera died on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She is survived by her children Andrea (and John) Zwirner of Anoka, Darcay (and Dale) Kesteloot of Marshall, Sharon (and Gary) Kesteloot of Marshall, Gary (and Jeanette) Wendorff of Tracy, Beth (and Bradley) Wilson of North Mankato, Judy (and Dean) Hawks of Hertel, WI, Twyla (and Troy) Gregoire of Brookings, SD, 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, sister Ruth (and Larry) Karlson of Spokane, WA, brother-in-law William Kennedy of Oregon and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gordon, and siblings Wilma (and Norman) Manken and Althea Kennedy, and brother-in-law Frank Thieren.
