Obituary Preview: Mary Kathrine “Kaki” Hartness
Saltillo-Mary Kathrine Hartness, at age 73, departed this life for her life eternal from her Saltillo home on Monday, April 11, 2022 from natural causes.  Born in Starkville, Ms on Jan. 17, 1949 to the late David Eugene Hartness, Sr. and Mary Emma Jolly Hartness, she grew up there and graduated from Starkville High School.  She spent most of her life in Starkville and Brooksville before moving to Saltillo 15 years ago.  Her working career included many years at Kroger where she was a stocker as well as cashier and for the Weyerhaeuser Corporation.  Having no children of her own, she absolutely adored her nieces and nephews who called her Aunt Kaki or Granny Kaki.  She personally attended her “chosen” childrens school and sports activities and was blissfully happy in their presence. She was a member of the Starkville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Butch Williams - March 07, 1951 - April 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: Butch Williams was one of the most loving, gentle, kindhearted, selfless man on earth.  He loved doing for others and would give his last penny to help someone!  He was full of joy and laughter!  He absolutely loved telling jokes and pulling pranks-anything to make you laugh or smile.  James Robert “Butch” Williams, 71, went to be with Jesus on Monday, April 11, 2022, at his 32 year residence in Tupelo from complications of COPD. Butch was born in Chicago, Ill. on March 7, 1951 to the late Dennis Williams and Charles and Mary Jane Outon McCollum who raised him. He married Linda Rose Farley Williams on April 6, 1990. Butch was an extremely hard working man.  He worked for Wilbert Burial Vault Company, and later, Doric Vault, where he expertly made graveside setups for countless thousands of families over the years. By night, he ran a paper route for the Daily Journal for several years. He was an ace pool shark and loved to work with wood.  Butch was an unquestioned Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He loved spending time with family and friends. Towards the end of his life, Butch enjoyed reading and learning God’s word.  He found comfort and peace through his Savior, Jesus Christ!!  Amen!!   He attended Parkway Baptist Church with his family when he was able.
Services will be on Friday, April 15, 2022 at 3PM at Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with Bro. Paul Young officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 14, 2022 from 5-7PM and on Friday one hour prior to the service.  A graveside committal will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Butch is survived by his wife, Linda Williams; 5 children, Ronnie Reeves of Tupelo, Carolyn Ford (Spencer) of Braxton, Ms, Tina Scruggs (Nick) of Hamilton, Ms., Terri Williams of Caledonia and Clay Baxter of Tupelo.11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  a brother, Charlie McCollum; 3 sisters, Jean Schafer, Joyce Putt and Elsie Battin; numerous nieces and nephews and friends everywhere.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Mary Jane Williams and a brother, Doug Williams.

Richard "Ricky" Dale Steinman - November 21, 1962 - April 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Tupelo- Richard Dale “Ricky” Steinman, 59, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2022, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Ricky was born November 21, 1962 in Batesville, MS to the late Al and Rita Steinman. Ricky married the love of his life, Dawn Hanlon, on August 14, 1983. They spent 38 wonderful years together.
Ricky was a kind and gentle soul and a role model to all. He was a very active member of St. James Catholic Church in Tupelo, were he was a Sunday school teacher and a Confirmation Sponsor. He was always involved in his children’s lives.  He coached baseball and loved any sports his children played.
It is said that Ricky loved a good prank. The Christmas stockings were always the best, along with his Halloween decorations. Ricky was known as the “Candy Man.” He always had candy in his pocket to give to anyone.
Ricky knew how to fix anything. He was the best handyman around as long as he could google how to fix it. He was a giver of life as he was a regular blood donor.
Ricky is survived by his wife, Dawn; Son Kevin Steinman (Rebecca); Daughters, Katherine Pacheco (Daniel), Jasmine Steinman, and Carly Yarber (Jason); Sister Carol Anton (Bill); Brothers, David Steinman, Mark Steinman, Marvin Steinman (Alice), Brian Steinman (Sylvia), and Greg Steinman (Kim); 3 Grandchildren, Gaines Steinman, Ross Steinman, and Emilia Pacheco; and several nieces and nephews.
Ricky was preceded in death by his parents and brother Glen Steinman.
Service will be on Wednesday April 13, 2022 at 2PM at St. James Catholic Church with Father Tim Murphy and Father Henry Shelton officiating.  Visitation will be on Wednesday April 13, 2022 from Noon until service time at St. James Catholic Church. In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. James Catholic Church Youth Fund, P.O. BOX 734, Tupelo, MS, 38802.

Obituary Preview: Casey Lynn Jahns died Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at North Miss. Medical Center after suffering an apparent stroke.  She was 42 years old. Casey was born in Tupelo on July 10, l979. She lived most all her life in Lee County.  An adventuresome soul, Casey lived life to the fullest and cut a wide path.  An animal lover, she cherished her dogs, Carley Sue and LuLu.  She loved contemporary music and was an avid fan of Michael Jackson.  Very smart and well read, she was a Conspiracy theorist and enjoyed following “Ancient Alien” on the History channel.  She grew up in the Assembly of God Church.\

Sharon Taylor Walls - September 22, 1960 - April 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Sharon Taylor Walls gained her wings while sleeping in the early morning hours of Monday, April 4, 2022 at her family residence north of Nettleton.  She was 61 years old.  Born in Jones County, Mississippi on Sept. 22, 1960 to the late Clarence Taylor and Bobbie Hanley Taylor, she grew up in Lamar County where she attended the public schools.  She moved to Lee County 35 years ago.  In 2004, she married James Lamar Walls of Pontotoc County.  He died in October, 2020.  Sharon worked for the last 20 plus years as a cashier at Kilgore Grocery where she made many friends and endeared herself to many customers.  Sharon loved the outdoors, camping and boating.  She was of the Baptist faith.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 11 AM Thursday, April 7, 2022 from the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with Bro. Scott Cockrell officiating.  Burial will follow in Cruse Cemetery near Pontotoc.  Visitation will be from 5PM-7PM Wednesday, April 6, 2022 and from 10 AM-service time on Thursday, all at Holland-Tupelo, which is honored to be serving their friends.   For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed at www.hollandfuneraldirectors.com/Livestreaming.

Her sister, Sue Blackmer of Hattiesburg and her step children, Sherry Koebler, Jamie Taylor, Tonya Walls and Jaymar Walls and their families. Mamie Sue Harris - July 10, 1933 - March 29, 2022

Obituary Preview: Valley Grove Community-Mamie Sue Harris was gifted with a beautiful life of 88 years. With her purpose filled life complete and her eternal destination secure,  she met her Creator on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at North MS. Medical Center after injuries sustained in a fall a few days earlier. Mamie Sue Sprouse was born in Union County, MS, on July 10, l933, one of seven children born to the late Lee Sprouse and (Ina Buchanan).   She graduated from New Harmony High School where she was an outstanding girls’ basketball star.  Her love for basketball stayed with her throughout her life and she was an avid NBA fan.  Her hero was always Michael Jordan.  She and her first husband, Charles Black, owned and operated Black’s Minute Mart, commonly known as the “Belden Store” for many years. On Dec. 19, 1978, she married the love of her life, James Douglas “Pete” Harris, a love affair that lasted over 44 years.  Pete always boasted he got the “prettiest girl” in Tupelo and was devoted to her until her death.  She was Secretary of Commonwealth Electric Company, which Pete was manager, and they traveled extensively together doing jobs across the country. Always dressed to the 9’s in bright, luminous attire especially reds, she had a sparkling personality that allowed her to never meet a stranger.  A fabulous cook, she loved having friends and family, especially grandchildren in her home.  She was a longtime member of the Bissell Baptist Church.
A service celebrating her life will take place at 11 AM, Saturday, April 2, 2022 from the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with her grandson, Jake Lindley, an aspiring architect student at Miss. State, officiating.  Private burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park.  Visitation will be from 10 am-service time on Saturday only at Holland-Tupelo Chapel, which is honored to be serving their friends.
She is survived by her doting husband, Pete Harris of Valley Grove; her daughter, Mitzie Black Ward and her husband, Doyle of Tupelo; her bonus children through her marriage to Pete, Jan Begnaud and husband, Bobby of Lafayette, LA, and Douglas Harris and wife, Dawn of Rock Hill, South Carolina;  her grandchildren, Michelle Anderson (Jay), Jon Murphree (daughter, Adilyn Murphree),  Amy Lindley (Rodney), Jennifer Erwin (Jeff), Mike McDonald (Dawn), Jami Fisher;  Her great grandchildren, Adilyn Murphee, Jake Lindley, Anna Lindley, Serra Erwin, Shelby Erwin, Bailee Sibley, Blair Gala, Ethan Laing .  She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, and a granddaughter, Mandie Murphree.

Born in Crawford, Lowndes County, Miss. on July 22, 1944 to the late William David “Bo” Miller and Sarah Stokes Miller, she grew up there and attended the public schools.  She and her late husband, Ted L Kinard, Sr., lived in Starkville all their adult life where they were self employed in the Welding business where she served as Secretary.  A Pentecostal and a believer, she was an excellent cook, enjoyed gardening and reading her Bible. Frances had a big servant’s heart, always looking out for the needs of her family and friends above self. Ernest (Buster) Eugene Potter - May 12, 1920 - March 26, 2022

Obituary Preview: TUPELO- Ernest “Buster” Eugene Potter, age 101, died March 26, 2022, some six weeks short of his 102nd birthday.  Ernest peacefully passed from this Earth after a very long, healthy, and blessed life.  He was born on May 12, 1920, in Kansas City, Missouri, to the late Ernest and Mary Meharg Potter and lived most of his life in Arkansas.
He retired from the Arkansas State Highway Department in Little Rock, Arkansas, before he and his wife moved to Tupelo in 1994 to be near their dearly treasured daughters and family. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and American Legion of Arkansas and was a member of Post 49 American Legion in Tupelo.  He also served a short time with the city of Tupelo Development of Planning and Community Development.  He attended the West Main Church of Christ in Tupelo, MS, and proudly enjoyed the label of being the oldest member.
Ernest was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran with service in the European Theatre, air combat Balkans, North Apennines, Po Valley with the 86th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron of the U.S. Air Force unit, and the 79th FTR group.  He served as an air operations specialist whose decorations included the Victory, American Theater, European African Middle East Campaign Ribbons, two overseas bars, 45 Caliber Revolver Expert Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and Three Bronze stars for these campaigns.
Mr. Potter was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 75 years, Mary Lynn Potter.  He follows in death his veteran walking buddy, Mr. Ottis Brandon.  Mr. Potter and his fellow walking veteran friends can still be seen in a photograph at Gloster Creek Village in Tupelo, where they were lovingly known as the “Honorary Security Guards” of the mall.  Mr. Potter was the last surviving veteran in the picture. Mr. Potter is survived by two daughters, Alice Starling of Tupelo, MS, and Ellen Brumley (Terry) of Columbus, MS, a cousin, Bill Read (Martha) of Little Rock, AR, Pappy’s five grandchildren,Alicia Crosswhite (Robert), Amie Brust (Dr. Matthew), James T. Brumley (Angelee), Angie Crosswhite (Dr. Brad) and Mary Ellen Brumley;  10 great-grandchildren, Betsy Crosswhite, Allison Ortiz (Montana), Brantley Brumley, David Brust, Ella Brumley, Nathan Brust, Beau Brumley, Emily Crosswhite, Hunter Crosswhite and Madelyn Crosswhite; and a host of friends who loved and respected this remarkable man.
The family would like to especially thank Dr. Brad Crosswhite, Dr. Rickey Parker, and Dr. Derek Moeller for their compassion and services.  Special thanks are also given to Tupelo Meals on Wheels, NMMC Home Hospice, and to Ms. Flo Coburn of Comfort Keepers.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 28, 2022, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the West Main Church of Christ. A private family graveside service, with military honors, will be held at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Batesville, AR, at a later time.  Holland Funeral Directors is honored to be serving their friends.

Virginia Cantrell - November 16, 1937 - March 24, 2022

Obituary Preview: Dorsey/Caledonia-Virginia Rae Dickson Cantrell, a quiet, gentle soul, departed this life reuniting with her loved ones and meeting her Creator from her grandaughter’s residence in Caledonia, MS. after a brief illness.  She was 84. Virginia was born on Nov. 16, 1937 in Gurnee, Illinois to the late Ermal Dickson and Jeanette Thompson Dickson Tideman.  She grew up there and married Billy Cantrell on Dec. 30, 1955. They made their home in the Hopewell-Keys area of Itawamba Co. in l969 where she lived until about 6 months ago when she moved to Caledonia to be with her nurse granddaughter, Amy.  Virginia and Billy were blessed with 5 children and raised a granddaughter as well.  A stay at home Mom until her children were grown, she worked as a seamstress in the Garment industry many years and completed her employment  with Super Sagless working there 10 years before retirement.  A master seamstress, Virginia loved her country home, the outdoors, watching game shows, socializing at the gaming resorts and watching football being an avid fan of Notre Dame and the Tennessee Titans. She was a big fan of Tony Bennett and was proud of her Irish/ Scottish ancestry.  Family was primary to her and she loved her children and all the grands.
A graveside service celebrating her life will take place at 11 AM Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Keys Cemetery on Hopewell-Keys Road in Itawamba County with her nephew, Rev. Randy Sakach officiating.  Burial will follow in the Cantrell family plot there.  The family will receive friends prior to and after the service.  Holland Funeral Directors is honored to be serving their friends.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Barbara Sisk (Sam) of Old Union and Larry Cantrell (Donna) of Pensacola, Fla. her grandchildren; Amy Burdine (Kelvin), Andrew Sisk, Daniel Sisk, Sonya Cantrell, Michael Cantrell, Barbara Cantrell, Michael Loague (Kelly); 11 great grandchildren and 11 great great-great grandchildren;  3 sisters, DeeDee Simms, Corkie Welch and Kathy Dickson; two brothers, Roy Dickson and Carl Dickson.   Well acquainted with loss, she was preceded in death by her parents, Ermal and Jeanette; her husband, Billy on July 14, l997; her children, Carol Timms on  July 18, 2018 ,  Steve Cantrell on Feb. 9, 2020 and Dawn on June 8, 2021, a granddaughter she raised, Brenda Carter on  Jan 24, 1999;  two brothers Sonny and Tim Dickson and Three Sisters, Peggy Myers, Janice Sasher and Ellen Colbert.

Obituary Preview: Virginia Faye Davis, 72, departed this life for her life in eternity on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 from Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after a period of declining health.  She was born in Marks, Mississippi on April 13, 1949, to the late Harrison Ard and Tinnie Faye McPeake. In her adult life she lived in Brandon, MS and attended First Baptist Church there. She worked in the billing, collections, and insurance department of the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield. She moved to Tupelo 7 years ago to be with her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook for them. Among her many hobbies were sewing, canning, gardening, and painting. Her love in life was playing with her grandchildren and great grandchild.
Virginia is survived by her children Dana Garcia and Richard Davis of Shannon, MS; her 4 grandchildren, Heather Garmin of South Carolina, Seth Davis of Crystal Springs, MS, Ashley Garcia of Shannon, MS , and Lindsey Garcia of Thomasville, Al; and her great grandchild Eli Garcia of Shannon; 2 brothers, Bill Ard of Pearl and Jerry McPeake of Denver, Co; and two sisters, Jean Rothery of Brandon and Maggie Woods of Biloxi. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents.

Terry Eugene Ezell - December 08, 1956 - March 21, 2022

Obituary Preview: Terry Eugene Ezell, 65, died Monday, March 21, 2022 at North Miss. Medical Center in Tupelo.  Terry was born in Grenada, MS. on Dec. 8, 1956 to the late Bro. Jack Ezell and Bobbie Lee Ezell.  He graduated from Tupelo High School in 1974.  He attended Lee University in Cleveland, TN. where he received a BA in Music.  Terry’s parents were the Pastor family at the Tupelo Church of God for over 40 years.  Terry was a man of adventure and daring.  He spent over 30 years with Delta Airlines primarily at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport where he was an Engine Maintenance Specialist. Terry was a world- wide traveler enjoyed many European destinations as well as visiting most all the States in the USA.  He was particularly fond of the Florida Keys, was often found on the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains in Park City, Utah skiing, enjoying the bright lights of Vegas or enjoying Disney World sites.  A free spirit and independent soul, Terry was a great musician primarily playing bass and keyboards.  He was always proud of his two daughters and loved them much.
A Celebration of his Life will take place at 11 AM today (Thurs. 3/24/22) at the Tupelo Church of God, his home Church, with Bro. Drew Carr officiating.  Visitation will be from 10 AM-service time Thurs. only at the Church.  Holland Funeral Directors is honored to be serving their friends.
Terry is survived by his two daughters, Lauren Olds and her husband, Solomon of Brentwood, Tn and Alison Ferguson of Dallas, Ga.  his grandchildren, Cash Olds, Presley Ferguson and Maverick Ferguson.    His mother, Bobbie Lee Ezell of Nettleton; his sister, LaDean Ezell Knowles and husband, Perry of Nettleton;  his nieces, Cailen Loague, Karrie Carroll and Morgan Carr; a special friend, Carol Owen of Douglasville, Ga. and a host of friends around the country.   He was preceded in death by his father, Bro. Rick Atwater - January 20, 1944 - March 19, 2022

Obituary Preview: Tupelo - Richard Stephen Atwater, 78, departed this life for his life in eternity on Saturday, March 19, 2022 from Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after a period of declining health.  Born in Wakefield, Mass on January 20, l944, to the late Edward David Atwater and Eleanor Hatch Atwater, he grew up there graduating from Wakefield High School.   Later in life, he studied at the Unity School of Religion in St. Louis, Mo.  He spent much of his working life in National sales for Schering-Plough Company living in Memphis several years. He married Pamela Ann McDowell Shields on Nov. 9, 2005 in Collierville, Tn.  They moved to Tupelo in 2006 where he and Pam were active in Wesley United Methodist Church where Rick sang in the Chancel choir.  In retirement, Rick became a home renovator using his many talents of strong hands and a steely mind to return many homes to a state of splendor. He enjoyed house flipping to the max. He and Pamela enjoyed their last years at the Cottages at Traceway Manor, where they enjoyed many good times and friendships.
A memorial service honoring Rick’s life will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, April 3, 2022, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Tupelo with Rev. Emily Sanford officiating.  Visitation will be from 1 PM-service time on Sunday.  Holland Funeral Directors is honored to be serving their friends.
Rick is survived by his wife, Pam McDowell Shields of Tupelo;  2 daughters, Lori Atwater Robertson (Drew) of Tupelo and Amy Atwater Garcia (Ryan) of Piperton, Tn.;  5 grandchildren whom Papa Maddell loved; Mamie Clark, Carson Clark, Audrey Robertson, Mason Garcia and Avery Garcia; a brother, David Atwater of Wakefield, Mass; three sisters, Cynthia Paul of Danville, N.H. and Ellie Brown of Concord, N.H. and Carol Handrich of Wakefield, Mass. several nieces and nephews and their families.  Rick was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eddie Atwater. Martha Jo Patterson - Unknown - March 18, 2022

Obituary Preview: Martha Jo Kelly Patterson lived 84 years with devotion to serving her God, her family, her community and beloved students in her over 40 year career as a public school teacher.  She departed this life for her life in eternity on Friday, March 18, 2022 from North Miss. Medical Center after a brief illness.  Martha Jo was born on May 7, l937 in Tupelo to the late Neal Kelly and Jodie Westmoreland Kelly. Her father died a week before her birth and she was raised by her mother, a well known seamstress in Tupelo for many years.  Martha Jo graduated from Tupelo High School in l955. She attended Itawamba Junior College where she was an Indianette.  Being strongly indoctrinated in the Presbyterian faith, she attended Belhaven College in Jackson receiving her BA Degree in Education.  She married Jimmy Earl “Jim” Patterson on June 27, 1959. They spent over 10 years in Memphis where she taught in the Memphis Public Schools. Jim graduated from Memphis State University in 1974. They returned to Tupelo where Jim was a CPA and Martha Jo continued her teaching career that spanned over 30 plus years as a special education/learning disabilities teacher in the Tupelo Public Schools. Martha Jo was known for her compassion, encouragementand interest in her students who were her pride and joy.She taught at Milam, Carver and Tupelo High Schools. She was a member of the Mississippi Association of Educators often making visits to the State Capitol to lobby legislators.  Martha Jo waslively, engaged and devoted to all things public education including the Retired Teachers Association.  She was involved in the community as a strong supporter of reading and the Lee County Library volunteering at book sales and other activities of Friends of the Lee County Library. Blessed with a gregarious personality and an insatiable appetite to humanitarian causes, Martha Jo was a joy to be around and never met a stranger. She was a devoted longtime loyal member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo where she was active in all its ministries.  She enjoyed books and reading, crossword puzzles, Wheel of Fortune and was always the life of the party when with her friends and associates. She loved finding a bargain and antiques, collecting Westmoreland glass. She had a booth at several antique malls for years.
A Service to the Witness of the Resurrection will be held at 2 PM Friday, March 25, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo with Rev. Dr. Ron Richardson officiating.  Burial will follow in Andrews Chapel Cemetery south of Mooreville.  Visitation will be from 6-7:30 PM Thursday at Holland Funeral Directors on Cliff Gookin. The family will receive friends from 1 PM-service time in McFadden Hall at First Presbyterian Church.
Martha Jo is survived by her daughter, Dr. Kirsten Patterson Bolton of Saltillo (Jay Mason) and her son, James Neal “Jim” Patterson of Mooreville;  her grandchildren, Ryan Bolton of Saltillo and Jody Patterson of Mooreville.  She was blessed to share a lifetime with her Patterson family and many of them survive.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Jodie Kelly; her husband, Jimmy Earl “Jim” Patterson who died Dec. 22, 2007 and her son in law, Senior Master Sergeant Danny Bolton who died May 27, 2021; and a sister who died when she was 2 years old from pneumonia in the aftermath of the 1936 Tupelo tornado.
Those serving as Pallbearers will be Ryan Bolton, Jody Patterson, Jay Mason, Steve Holland, Henry Cobb, and Hugh Lamar. Bud Henley - September 27, 1945 - March 17, 2022

Obituary Preview: Jesse Lee “Big Bud” Henley, Sr., 76, departed this life from Sanctuary Hospice on Thursday, March 17, 2022 after a lingering illness.  Born on Sept. 27, 1945 in the Una Community of Clay County, he was the son of Charles Haughton, Sr. and Ruby Steel Henley.  He was a twin to his brother, James Henley.  They were always known as “Big Bud” and “Little Bud” with Jesse being born first. He spent much of his growing up life in the Una Community of Clay County and later lived in West Point.  He moved to the Brewer Community in 2003 after his retirement as a Supervisor for Bryan Foods, where he worked for over 35 years.  He married his greatest love, Mary Sue Hill on Aug. 9, l986. She died on July 10, 2014.  Big Bud enjoyed the outdoors hunting and fishing, playing golf and watching westerns on TV.  After retirement, he spent much time working at The Buffalo Park.  He enjoyed football especially the Ole Miss Rebels and his fur baby’s, Rooney and Wyatt.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 PM Sunday, March 20, 2022 from the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo with Rev. Ed Temple officiating.  Visitation will be from Noon-service on Sunday only. Obituary Preview: John Thomas Johnson, in his 67th year of his earthly pilgrimage, went to meet his Creator on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 from North Miss. Medical Center in Tupelo after a year long battle with cancer.  John was born at the North Miss. Medical Center in Tupelo on Nov. 30, 1954 to the late George Bert Johnson, Sr. and Mabel Gandy Johnson, all pioneer families in south Lee County.  He lived his entire 67 years in the Johnson family home “on the hill” in the Union Community of Plantersville.  John graduated from Nettleton High School in 1972. He was a jack of all trades and spent most of his life doing carpentry work.  He worked many years for Grant Sowell Siding installing vinyl siding. John enjoyed his home, watching CNN on TV and roaming the family land at his homestead. A service celebrating his life will be held at 1 PM Friday, March 11, 2022 from the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with Bro. Mary Jean Rutherford - April 23, 1935 - March 09, 2022

Obituary Preview: Tupelo-Miss Mary Jean Rutherford, 86, departed this life for her eternal home at her residence in Tupelo on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 after a period of declining health.  Born April 23, 1935 in Webb City, Missouri to the late John Edward Rutherford and Martha Rose Hare Rutherford, she attended the public schools there and graduated from Webb City High School.  After attending the local Junior College in Joplin, she received her BS Degree in Medical Technology from Northwestern University in Chicago. She later earned a MA degree in Education from Drury University in Springfield, Mo.  Professor Rutherford spent the remainder of her life either teaching or serving as program manager for Med Tech programs in Chicago, St. Louis, and Springfield. She retired 17 years ago after a distinguished career as Head of the Medical Technology Program at Arkansas State University-Jonesboro. Professor Rutherford was called upon to attend numerous accreditation visits around the country to assess college Med Tech Programs.   An avid reader and collector of fine literature, Professor Rutherford enjoyed traveling domestically and abroad, loved crocheting, collected nesting dolls and photography.  After moving to Tupelo, she became a member of the Golden Oldies LLC Estate Sales owned by her sister, Dorothy Golden.
Funeral services will be private to the family.  There will be a time of visitation and celebration of her life from 5PM-6PM Monday at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo, which is honored to be serving their friends.

Obituary Preview: Joshua Cory Harrison died Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at his home in Madison. Joshua was born 31 years ago, Jan. 31, 1991 in Tupelo. Joshua’s joyous birth soon turned tragic with the death of his mother days later.

Lila Lee Marlin - October 02, 1934 - March 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Lila Lee Gurley Marlin passed away peacefully on Sunday morning March 6th with family beside her at The Greenhouses in Tupelo, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Joe Travis Gurley and Mary Lucille Emerson Gurley and only daughter of four children. She was born October 2nd, 1934 in Tishomingo County, attended school and graduated from Iuka High School in 1952. Lila was Miss Iuka at the age of 16. She lettered for 4 years in basketball at Iuka High School and loved her teammates and the game. She was married in 1951 to James Alvin Marlin and they had two sons, James Michael (Mike) and Robert Lee Marlin (Bob). Mrs. Marlin worked at the Highway Department (DOT) prior to becoming a full time stay at home wife and mother to her two sons. She later worked many years at Bancorp South. She was an independent woman that was proud of her family and career. She was an avid sports mom taking and attending both of the Boys many many games for Years and loved cheering them on! She loved her church and was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church and volunteered many hours in service to the Lord. She loved her Bible and remained an extremely religious and spiritual woman till her passing. Lila was a humble, kind soul that was extremely proud of her sons. She was loved and admired by everyone that knew her. She resided in Tupelo all of her adult life and was also very proud of the community that she was a part of.
Mrs. Marlin was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Travis Gurley and Mary Lucille Emerson Gurley; her brothers, Joe, Charles, and Bobby Gurley, and her eldest son, James Michael “Mike” Marlin.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law,  Robert Lee “Coach Bob”  Marlin  and Jennifer of Lafayette Louisiana;  daughter-in-law, Georgia Cowan Marlin, Brandon, Mississippi: her sister-in-law, Wilma Gurley of Olalla, Washington and her nieces and nephews, Sue Gurley, Poulsbo, Washington, Randy Gurley, Tammy Gurley, Sharon Gurley, and Scott Gurley all from Port Orchard Washington.  She was blessed with 5 grandchildren, Dr. Michael Brett Marlin, Jackson, Mississippi, Robert Tyler Marlin, Dallas, Texas, Caitlin Marlin Lohman, Flowood,Mississippi, Robert Matthew (Matt) Marlin , Conroe,Texas and Saylor Marlin Lafayette, Louisiana. 2 great grandchildren, Parks Shiyou, Flowood, Mississippi and Beckham Marlin, Lafayette, Louisiana.
Visitation for family and friends will begin at 10:00 Thursday, March 10, 2022 with funeral services following at 11:00 at the Sadie M. Obituary Preview: Tupelo – Mr. Alan David Schmidt, age 60, died Sunday, March 6, 2022, at his residence.  He was born August 4, 1961 in Jackson, MS.  He was a graduate of Germantown High School and continued his education at the University of Mississippi, earning a Bachelor Degree in Journalism.  During his younger years he worked as a journalist employed by the Biloxi Sun Herald.  He then worked in IT employed by the Walmart Distribution Center for more than 20 years.  Alan was of the Catholic faith.  He was an avid reader and a huge fan of everything Ole Miss and Miami Dolphins.

Drew West Clayton, Sr. - September 26, 1963 - March 03, 2022

Drew West Clayton, Sr., 58, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2022, in Tupelo, Mississippi after bravely fighting to recover from injuries sustained in a car accident in 2018. He was born on September 26, 1963, to Ottis Nathaniel Clayton and Carol Williams Clayton Burch. Drew grew up in Byhalia, Mississippi, and was a 1981 graduate of Marshall Academy in Holly Springs. Continuing his education at Mississippi State University, Drew received a degree in Business Administration in 1985. While at Mississippi State, he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and at the time of his death was a member of their House Corporation.
In 1986 he married Lori Anne Laney of Pascagoula, Mississippi, and they are the parents of three sons. After living in Corinth for 11 years, Drew and Lori moved to Tupelo in 1998, where Drew resided until his death. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and active in the Asbury Sunday School Class.
Upon completion of college, Drew was employed by Yellow Freight Corporation where he remained a dedicated and loyal employee for 33 years. At the time of his accident, he was Regional Terminal Manager. Drew was an avid sportsman and especially enjoyed hunting and spending time with family and friends at the family deer camp. He faithfully cheered for his MSU Bulldogs, with special pride when sons Reed and Tate played MSU basketball. His Ole Miss friends received many good-natured jokes after the rivals competed whether the Bulldogs won or lost!
Drew’s love and support for his family, loyal friendship, self-deprecating sense of humor and joking nature will be sorely missed but will live on in the hearts of his family and wide circle of friends.
A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held today, Sunday, March 6, 2022, at 3:00PM at First United Methodist Church, Tupelo with Rev. Andy Ray, the Rev. Dr. Embra Jackson, Rev. David Shumaker and Rev. Smith Lilley officiating. Interment will follow in Tupelo Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until service time in Wesley Hall. Betty Presley - August 06, 1956 - March 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: Betty McLaughlin Presley, departed this life on March 1, 2022 from Sanctuary Hospice House.  Betty was born on August 6, 1956 in Memphis Tennessee as Betty Lou Bright.  She moved to Pontotoc, Mississippi with her husband’s family after marrying at the age of 16, where she would live and raise three children for almost thirty years.  While living in Pontotoc, Betty worked a variety of jobs, including the shirt factory in Ecru, Klassic Furniture and Action Lane Industries.  Betty was an accomplished seamstress, making many of her daughters’ best dresses for church and pageants and even their wedding dresses. Betty spent a wonderful year 2000-2001 during which time her primary occupation was caring for her first grandchild while his parents were working. Betty used that time to also go back to school and obtain her Associates Degree from ICC in Information Technologies.  After obtaining her Associates Degree, Betty began a career at Swift Transportation in New Albany, MS, and later transferred to the Memphis, Tennessee office which led her back to her native hometown.  Betty married Ronald Presley (originally of Birmingham, AL), a co-worker at Swift in 2004, and they resided in Memphis until 2019, when they achieved Betty’s lifelong dream of retiring to the beach when they purchased a condominium in Gulf Shores, Alabama and relocated there to spend the rest of their days.
Betty grew up in Temple Baptist Church, Memphis, TN, and as an adult served at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Pontotoc, MS, and Grimes United Methodist Church of Memphis, TN, and finally Gulf Shores United Methodist Church.
After two blessed years living her dream of living at the beach, Betty succumbed to a brief terminal illness.
Betty is survived by her husband, Ronald Presley, of Gulf Shores, AL, three children, Melissa McLaughlin Harrison (Jason) of Tupelo, MS, Marty “Lynn” McLaughlin, Jr. of Pontotoc, and Penny McLaughlin Logan (Will) of Pontotoc.  Betty’s pride and joy was her five grandchildren, Kellen Harrison, (Wellesley, MA), Erin Harrison (Manhattan, NY), Kara Morrisson, John Thomas McLaughlin, and Kallie Logan,  all of Pontotoc, and they adored her in return with all their hearts.
Betty is also survived by four siblings, Carl Bright (Shirley) of Memphis, TN,  Mavis Morton (Atoka, TN), Timothy O’Donnell (Carrie) of Mokena, IL and Billy Rodenbach of Fulton, Missouri.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, William Bright (Joyce) of Eupora, MS and Evelyn Bright Rodenbach of Birmingham, AL, along with her maternal grandparents who raised her from childhood, who she called “Mama,”  Velma “Dell” Burks Gravette   and “Poppy” Walter “Henry” Burks  both of  Memphis, Tennessee and Cullman, Alabama. Services celebrating her life will be at 1 PM Saturday March 12, 2022 from the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo. The family will receive friends from Noon-service time and after the service at the funeral home. Reverend Ryan Moorman of West Heights Baptist Church Pontotoc, MS will be officiating.  Burial will take place at the Alabama Veterans Memorial Garden in Spanish Fort at a future date.  For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed at www.hollandfuneraldirectors.com/Livestreaming at 1 PM Saturday and will be archived thereafter.  Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Way, Memphis, TN,  38105
