William G. Hall - April 02, 1933 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (Flemington)
Obituary Preview: William G. Hall (Bill), age 91 years, a life-long resident of Flemington, New Jersey, passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, May 3, 2024, at his home. The Hall family has resided in the Flemington area since the 1700's, and Halls fought in the Revolutionary War and for the Union in the Civil War as members of the Flemington Regiment.
Born in Flemington, New Jersey on April 2, 1933, he was the son of the late Stanley D. and Bernice (Conkling) Hall. Bill graduated from Flemington High School with the Class of 1951, where he was a three-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball.
Soon after graduating high school, Bill enlisted and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1953-1956, where he attained the rank of Sergeant.
After his service in the Marines, he trained to become an airline pilot. He flew for Eastern Airlines, attaining the rank of Captain during his highly successful career as a pilot. He flew some of the largest jets in the Eastern Airlines fleet, and his routes included flights to South America, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and destinations throughout the United States. Bill truly loved being a pilot and always said how grateful he was to be able to pursue a career that he truly enjoyed.
In the late 1950's Bill met the love of his life, Marion (Halychyn) Hall, who was then a stewardess for Eastern Airlines. As it happened, they met not on an Eastern flight, but at a local dance in Flemington. They married on March 14, 1959, and were devoted to each other and their family during their 65 years of marriage.
In addition to his career as a pilot, Bill invested in several residential and commercial properties in the Flemington area. He did much of the maintenance on the properties himself, and until just recently, continued to climb ladders to do repairs, and continued his daily ritual of sweeping his porch and the sidewalks in front of his buildings.
Above all, one of the greatest joys of his life was being a father and grandpa to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Infinitely patient, he spent hours with his grandchildren, teaching them how to ride a bike, taking trips to the Flemington Library to check out books, drawing picture books, playing chess, and spending endless hours playing board games, especially monopoly. He attended his grandchildren's sporting events, graduations, and other important events and played with his great-grandchildren at family dinners and holidays. He was an example to everyone who knew him of how to live a good, honorable, generous and loving life. His family gave him the greatest compliment of all by saying, “he will be remembered as a truly good man."
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Pat Wengryn, who died in 2015.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years, Marion (Halychyn) Hall; his son Stan Hall and Christina Hall, his wife, of Delaware Township; his son Jim Hall and Joanne Hankins, of Flemington; his three grandchildren, Erica Hall and her husband, Manuel Saenz of Montclair, New Jersey, Brandon Hall and his wife Kelscey Boyle of Orlando, FL, and Bryant Hall, who is pursuing a graduate degree in physics in Amsterdam, Netherlands; as well as his two great-grandchildren, Julia Viviana Saenz and Charlotte Anne Hall.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in the family plot at St. Magdalen Cemetery, North Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private details that you're unsure about including in the obituary, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit them. Remember that the goal of an obituary is to honor and celebrate the person's life, not to air dirty laundry or reveal secrets.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to continue the person's legacy and support a cause they cared about.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published, contact the newspaper or online platform directly to see what options are available.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituaries are archived permanently and can be accessed years later. However, it's always a good idea to save a copy of the obituary for your own records.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Yes! Sharing an obituary on social media can help spread the word quickly and reach a wider audience. Many online obituary platforms provide sharing tools or links to make it easy to share on Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms.

What if I want to write an anonymous obituary?

In general, it's not recommended to write an anonymous obituary. Obituaries are meant to be personal tributes from those who knew and loved the deceased. If you're concerned about privacy or safety issues, consider speaking with a funeral home or counselor for guidance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complicated family relationships in an obituary?

This can be a delicate situation. When dealing with multiple marriages or complicated family relationships, focus on accuracy and sensitivity. Consider consulting with other family members or a funeral home for guidance.

Can I include information about pets in an obituary?

Yes! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family. Including information about beloved pets can add warmth and personality to the obituary.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress, consider reaching out to a trusted friend or family member for support. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or counselor who can provide guidance and resources.

Can I use humor or irony in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor and irony can be effective ways to celebrate a person's life and personality. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I ensure that an online obituary is accurate and up-to-date?

Maintain open communication with the online platform or funeral home managing the obituary. If you notice any errors or inaccuracies, report them promptly so they can be corrected.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life story?

Yes! There are many digital platforms and tools available that allow you to create a comprehensive archive of your loved one's life story, including photos, videos, stories, and more.

What if I want to write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

This is not uncommon! You may want to write one version for close friends and family, another for coworkers or acquaintances. Just be sure to tailor each version appropriately for its intended audience.
