Maudine Moffitt - May 25, 1927 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Galax)
Obituary Preview: Maudine Moffitt, a 64-year resident of Sarasota, FL, passed away in the early morning hours of April, 19th in Galax, VA. She had been a 7 month resident in Senior Home Share of Galax. There, Kristina, Misty, Brittany, Trudy, Melissa and so many others surrounded her with love and care. She was 96 years old.
She was the daughter of Sherman and Phronie Knuckles of Lamar, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband John Charles Moffitt, her grandson Travis C. Ury,
her parents and 6 brothers and sisters.
She graduated with honors from Washington College Academy High School in 1946 and Lincoln Memorial University in Jonesboro, TN in 1950. Named 'Whose Who' in American Colleges and Universities, she brought all of her talents to bear as a 42-year elementary school teacher.
She took kindness, compassion and a love of life into her classroom. Hundreds, if not thousands of elementary-aged children at Alta Vista and Wilkinson Elementary in Sarasota were forever touched by her spirit.
She beamed when she shared her favorite classroom memory: terrariums contained monarch butterfly chrysalises. Students took turns watching for the moment a monarch butterfly would emerge from the chrysalis. One afternoon the 'watcher' yelled 'it's time' and chairs overturned as the entire class ran to see the new monarch butterfly emerge. Her joy in their enthusiasm brought more fulfillment than all the treasures in the world.
Maudine is survived by her son Charles Edward Moffitt of Sarasota, FL for 65 years, now living in Galax, VA; daughter Deborah G. Ury and grandson Tyler C. Ury both of Mahwah, NJ; daughter Jerrita Moffitt of Galax, VA; her sister Nita Paulea of Springdale, Arkansas; a host of nieces and nephews; and her son's Golden Retriever 'Rush'. Our forever gratitude goes to the entire staff of Senior Home Share in Galax, the ER staff at Twin County Hospital, Gentiva Hospice and the National Cremation Society.

Tom was born March 24, 1942, to Merrill and Mildred Bennett in Miami. Tom had an older brother, Robert, and a younger brother, Larry (deceased). He joined the Army and started what he referred to as, "the best career the Army could give me", a tank driver. He was a great listener, supportive father and friend, and faithful man of God.

Tom is survived by his wife, Linda; his older brother, Robert (Ursula); children: Jerrold (Ruth), Terri, Karen, and Christine (Myk); ten grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. His legacy to "love each other" will continue to be shared, fueled by memories of his compassion for others, faith, witty humor, and infectious laughter.

Jack W. Sells - December 19, 1937 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Galax)
Obituary Preview: Jack W. Sells December 19, 1937 – February 23, 2024
At the age of 86, he left all the pain and sorrows of this earth and entered into eternal peace and joy with his Lord and Savior to reunite with his loving wife of 43 years, Margie; father and mother, Wayne and Helyn Monk Sells; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Irene Sells; sisters, Jerlene Perkins and Betty Pugh.
Jack served his country in the U.S. Army. He played in the semi-pro baseball league and loved coaching little league and pony league baseball teams. One of his proud moments was taking the local boys of Grant to a championship win in 1974.
He worked in the textile industry for several years at Anvil Brand and Grayson Garment. While employed at Virginia House Furniture, he encountered an injury and during the healing period he decided to work outdoors.
He dedicated 40 years to farming, raising his family working with beef and dairy cattle. Jack instilled into his children a hard work ethic while teaching them more about agriculture than they could have learned in a classroom. Gardening was a way of providing food, raising hogs and hunting wildlife was a means of obtaining meat. He enjoyed the compliments from his jealous friends and neighbors of a beautiful garden producing the largest potatoes and delicious tomatoes in the county. Jack and his wife, Margie enjoyed harvesting and canning the vegetables as displayed on the shelves in their Can Room.

Sharon Edna Felts - March 25, 1935 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (Galax)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Edna Felts was born on March 25, 1935 in Sparta, Michigan to Hiram and Edith Chapman, the middle child of five siblings. When Sharon was 9 years old, her father was transferred to Galax. While living in Galax, she met Joe Neal Felts and married him on March 29, 1952. They had two wonderful offspring, David Felts and Shari Felts Kingery. She was called Nana by 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Sharon was very busy with many organizations during her life. She began working with the Girl Scouts of America in Oak Harbor, Washington, when her husband was stationed there while in the Navy. She formed the first Girl Scout Troop at Oakland Elementary School in the Piper's Gap Community. She was always willing to give her time to the PTA, Pipers Gap Rescue Squad, and The Order of the Eastern Star, in which she was a member. Sharon spent many years with the Galax Theater Guild. Her first singing audition was so terrible that she put all others at ease. Even with her terrible singing voice she landed the role of Aunt Eller in Oklahoma. Sharon was also very active in her church, Oakland United Methodist. She enjoyed doing Children's church, working with Vacation Bible School and making apple butter every fall.
Everyday was a joy to Sharon. She always felt that God had blessed her beyond anything she had expected, even though she mourned two sisters, Arlene Anders, and Judith McCave, a brother, Ralph Chapman, and her father and Mother. She also grieved her beloved husband, Joe and her only son, David. She felt that she was fortunate enough to have them in her life for so many years. Sharon felt that her life was like a storybook with so much love and sometimes magic.
She leaves to mourn her passing her precious daughter, Shari (Tom) Kingery of Roanoke VA, granddaughters, Ariel Felts of Woodlawn VA, Kara (Dustin) Garst of Roanoke, VA, and Sara Kingery of Roanoke VA, her grandsons, Caleb (Laura) Kingery of Morganton NC. and Nate Kingery of Roanoke VA. Sharon also had 4 great grandchildren, which she felt were perfect, Karsyn and Bryson Garst, and Landry and Riley Kingery. She also leaves her only sister, Andrea Hodges of Galax VA. Also surviving Sharon is her companion of many years, Don Morton of Galax. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Sharon had many friends around the world that will miss her, but she felt that the Jay and Jewel Blackburn family and the Joye Hanks family were extended family.
No arrangements have been made at this time but a “Celebration of Life” will happen at a later date.
