Roger G. King - January 26, 1966 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Ithaca)
Obituary Preview: Roger G. King of Newfield passed away peacefully at Cayuga Medical Center on May 1st. Roger was born at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, NY on January 26th 1966 to Clifford King and Jane Rosevink. Roger previously worked at the Ithaca Home Depot where he thrived as the top appliance salesman in the district. He was a natural salesman and loved working.
Roger lived for his family and his entire world revolved around his wife, daughters and grandchildren. Roger and Dawn have been inseparable for 39 years and their love story started when they were just teenagers. Roger proudly gushed over his love for his daughters and grandchildren to anyone he came in contact with.
Though Roger was a paraplegic due to a motorcycle accident when he was 17, he never let that deter him from living a wonderful life. He was told he could never have children, yet he had two daughters. He was told he would never drive, yet he did. He was told he would not live past 40 years old, and again he proved the doctors wrong. Prior to Roger getting sick you could find him playing outdoors with his grandchildren, having his favorite pizza at Sals or driving around downtown where he would surely run into someone he knew. He was always the life of the party and loved having bbq’s and late night card games with family and friends. As an avid Miami Dolphins fan, he made sure the games were always on. Imagine living in a house with diehard dolphins, cowboys and bills fans- it was always rowdy. Sunday dinners were always important to Roger which was a tradition he carried on from his mother- a table filled with his family always made him light up. Roger was undoubtedly a man full of determination and strength. He overcame obstacle after obstacle and defied so many odds. The last year and a half was very difficult with Roger’s health. He spent a majority of that time in the hospital fighting health challenge after health challenge. Roger was often jokingly called a magician who continued to pull tricks out of his hat while he pushed through each life threatening illness thrown his way.
Predeceased by his father Clifford King, mother Jane Rosevnk , brothers Alfie and Donnie, mother in law Judi Gelinas, step father in law Ed Stout, father in law Bob Gelinas, sister in law Jamie Gelinas, brothers in law Kelly and Bobby Gelinas, and nephews little Bobby and Seth Fuller. Survived by his wife of 39 years, Dawn. Two daughters Amber(James) Powers, Samantha(Zach) King. Grandchildren Aubriella, Jensen, Madden, Emilia and Greyson. Brothers Mikey Rosevink, Cliffy(Debbie) King, Robbie(Carrie) King. Sisters Karen Baker, Debbie(Mark) Owens, Becky Rosevink. Sister in law’s Kim Vann and Christine Holmes. Many nieces and nephews all who he loved very much.
We would like to send a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and all the hospital staff at Cayuga Medical Center for taking such wonderful care of Roger the last few months of his life. They all treated him like their family and he was so appreciative of the care he received. Calling hours will be Monday May 13th at 12:30pm at Herson-Wagner Funeral Home followed by a service at 1:30pm. The family will be holding a celebration of life to honor Roger at the Eagles following the service

Pixi Lee Lott - July 22, 1957 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Ithaca)
Obituary Preview: Pixi Lee Lott, 66, of Ithaca, NY, passed away on Thursday, April 25th, 2024 at the Pathway Home in Seneca Falls, NY.
Pixi was born to Janice (Schlock) Manning and Bruce Lott on July 22, 1957, and was raised by her stepfather Richard Manning. She went to Ithaca High School, a part of the Class of 1975. Pixi is survived by her loving partner Doug Griffen and devoted dogs Monkers and Zoki; children Mara (Bambi) Lott, Taneal Stewart (Donald Nielson), and Daniel Charles Smith; her grandchildren Hayden, and Justin; a myriad of siblings including Shawn, Mattison, Bruce Jr., Carmen, Britni, Brindi, Tracey, Heidi, Nicole, Suzanne, and many more; and the countless friends she considered Family with special mention to Bill and Chrisy Lower, and her bonus daughter Kati Dresser.
Pixi was known for her fierce love, supportive nature, and ability to make infinite space in her heart for everyone she met. Pixi never hesitated to tell you she was “proud like a peacock” of every accomplishment, big or small. Her open heart served her well during her years as a bartender and waitress at some of Ithaca’s legendary bars, and again years later when she worked as a Teacher’s Aide for the Seneca County School District, where she touched the lives of many students. Pixi was proud to call her home “a soft place to fall,” and always kept the door open to anyone in need.
Pixi had a personality like a firecracker, with a sharp wit, and a sharp tongue to match it. She was colorful and eccentric, boisterous, outspoken, and full of energy to spare. She was devoutly Christian and believed God’s purpose for her was to love and care for others. In that regard, she said she must have done something right because she was rewarded with her loving companion, Doug, who cared for her through her many illnesses over the years, and who loved and accepted her wholly until the end. A Celebration of Pixi’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 4th at 11 am at the West Hill Community Church, 3049 Van Dorn Corners Rd., in Ithaca, NY. Guests are encouraged to bring a picture and a story of Pixi, in lieu of flowers, and those wishing to do something in remembrance of her are asked to give to someone in need. She leaves you with a final message: “Thank you for being a part of my journey. The best is yet to come! See you on the other side!”

Linda M. Vierling PH. D. - January 06, 1951 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Ithaca)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Linda M. Vierling, a highly respected Clinical Psychologist in Memphis, TN, died at age 73 on March 8, 2024 after a short illness. One of the city’s top specialists in family, child and adolescent psychology, Dr. Vierling practiced for over 35 years in Memphis and--except for when she gave birth to her three children--never took a sick day. She was as devoted to her patients as she was to her family.
A native of St. Louis, MO, Vierling was the fourth of 12 children born to Robert and Virginia Vierling. Growing up in a house of seven boys and five girls undoubtedly contributed to her ability to juggle the crazy schedules and pressures she confronted in her professional and family life. She worked to put herself through both college and graduate school, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Missouri, St. Louis in 1972; a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Marquette University in Milwaukee; and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from St. Louis University in 1979. She completed her Clinical Internship in Psychology at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences that same year.
After a short stint at the Southeast Mental Health Center, Dr.Vierling opened a solo private practice in Memphis and soon thereafter married fellow Psychologist Dr. Frank Masur. A few years after marriage Drs. Vierling and Masur joined their private practices under the name Health Psychology Associates and worked together for over 30 years.
For decades Memphis attorneys routinely called on Dr. Vierling to aid them in divorce cases, custody issues and parenting plans. She was a superb listener and exceptionally gifted at dispensing thoughtful advice and caring counsel. She respectfully responded to the words, and silences, that others shared, making her exceptionally skilled at dealing with troubled children, teens, and their parents. Teenaged patients often said that Dr. Vierling had “truly heard them,” a unique talent and loving gift that she willingly shared. Many of her young patients, now adults, have recounted the profound impact that Dr. Vierling had on their lives especially during their vulnerable adolescent years.
“Dr. Linda,” as many knew her, likewise shared her talents and enthusiasm with her family and community. For many years she coached soccer for her daughters’ teams at St. George’s Day School in Germantown. Similarly, she devoted countless hours and energy to St. George’s Odyssey of the Mind (OM), a program promoting intellectual and emotional creativity and teamwork for youth. She led her OM teams to several wins at both the state and national levels.
Linda truly loved sports. She was a gifted athlete and played both softball and volleyball in high school. A fan of her husband’s beloved Pittsburgh Steelers, she also enjoyed watching and napping to professional golf. She relished hosting intimate Super Bowl parties at which she plied her guests with enough appetizers to feed an entire stadium.
An avid walker and hiker, she encouraged friends to meet her for brisk “walk & talk” outings at Shelby Farms, her favorite Memphis walking venue. After retiring and moving to Ithaca, NY, to be closer to her grandkids, Linda joined the Ithaca Hikers, trudging through snowy gorges undeterred by freezing temperatures and inclement weather.
In more recent years, Dr. Vierling became involved with various community groups in Ithaca and was especially devoted to The Compassionate Friends, a self-support group for parents who had lost a child. Moreover, she volunteered at a food outreach program called Loaves & Fishes and a multiracial sustainable family farm called Fort Baptist Farm in upstate NY.
Dr. Vierling was predeceased by her parents, her beloved son Aaron Masur, and her sister Donna Vierling Brady.
She is survived by her husband of over 40 years Dr. Frank Masur; her older daughter Lena Masur (Casey Pendleton) of Ithaca, NY; her younger daughter Elise Masur (Dr. Kevin Cook) of College Park, MD; and her much-adored four grandchildren: Sam, Ruth, and Lin Pendleton and Rosalyn Cook. She is also survived by ten siblings: Joseph (Dianne) Vierling; Stephen (Theresa) Vierling; Kathy (John) Guckes; Deborah (Tony) Custodio; Susan (Chris) Browne; Tony (Stephanie) Vierling; James (Kim) Vierling; Vic (Jan) Vierling; Tom (Colleen) Vierling; and Tim Vierling.

Charles E. Burke - January 09, 1929 - January 27, 2024

Departed: 01/27/2024 (Ithaca)
Obituary Preview: Charles E. “Charlie” Burke, 95, passed away on January 27, 2024. He was born on January 9, 1929, in Jersey City, NJ at home and two months early and very small. His Aunt Lily put him in a shoebox on top of the radiator to keep him warm!
Born to Edward and Mary (Banta) Burke. He is predeceased by his son, Edward “Eddie” Burke. He is also predeceased by his sisters; Lorraine Pintak and Marie Madden. He is survived by his wife, Georgine (Gigi) Burke, his sister, Irene Burke Blazoski, his son Michael (Kimberly) Munson-Burke and daughter-in-law Madeleine Burke. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Amy (Jorge) Hurtado, Patrick (Claudia) Burke, Kieren Munson-Burke, Jenet Munson-Burke-Dolley and Mirana Munson-Burke. As well as his great-grandchildren; Valentina, Jorge Jr, Viviana, Victoria, Athena and Roy.
Charlie started working for pay at 12 as a dog walker and fetching groceries for people. But his real first job was getting beer from the back door of the local bar for Nana Burke. At 16, he started working for Maersk International Shipping Company and spent much of his career there in the World Trade Center. On November 16th 1949, he met Georgine (his future wife) on a blind date. He swears he knew he would marry her at first sight. In 1951, he was drafted into the Korean War. On January 26, 1951 he proposed to Georgine. He was deployed for two years, during this time, they wrote each other letters almost everyday. On April 6, 1953 they were married at Sacred Heart Church in Jersey City.
They moved into an apartment in New Jersey and had their first son, Eddie, shortly after. During their time in apartments they were unable to get a dog so they had an assortment of pets such as turtles, birds and fish. In 1964, they bought their house in Stormville, NY and got their first dog.
From then on, there would always be a dog around. Their second son, Michael, was born a few years later. Charlie always valued his family above all else. The Stormville house was host to many family gatherings and parties. The cousins often spent summers there where Charlie would take the kids and the dogs on adventures in the woods. In 1988, Charlie retired from Maersk and went to work as a school bus driver. His favorite job by far- he even brought the kids donuts every Friday and let them pick the music on the radio.
He was an active and loving grandfather throughout his life. Charlie and Gigi would visit as often as they could, even flying or driving regularly to Florida to visit. His eldest two grandkids often spent summers with them in Stormville. When his younger grandchildren came around he was just as thrilled and made many trips to visit them. Eventually, Charlie and Gigi split their time between Ithaca and Miami to be able to spend as much time with family as possible. Charlie was overjoyed to be a great-grandfather and spent as much time as he could with his great-grandchildren as they came along. While in Miami, Charlie and Gigi would volunteer at the hospital and babysit their great-grandkids.
Eventually, they moved full-time to Ithaca, NY, where they were able to spend more time with Kieren, Jenet, and Mirana. As Charlie and Gigi aged, they moved in with their son and daughter-in-law. When they started needing more assistance, Jenet took a very active role in making sure they got the care they needed. When they needed more care than could be provided at home, they moved to Cayuga Nursing and Rehab. The family would like to thank the staff there for their care, particularly Brad, Micaella, Chris, Brynn, and Michael. Charlie died peacefully with Gigi by his side.
There will be a wake from 2-4 followed by a service held at Herson-Wagner Funeral Home in Ithaca, NY on Saturday, February 3rd.

He was born on August 20, 1939 to the late Joseph (George) and Edith Pankin Silberman. Bob grew up in Brooklyn, NY, attending Stuyvesant High School and Brooklyn College. There he met the love of his life, June Forman, and they married in 1961.
Bob attended Cornell University for his masters degree and PhD in organic chemistry. He then moved to Cortland where he taught at SUNY Cortland as a professor of organic chemistry for 36 years. An authority on the teaching of chemistry, he was a frequent contributor to the Journal of Chemical Education, publishing over 20 articles, and collaborated with four other chemists to write a textbook with accompanying lab manuals, Chemistry In Context, for the American Chemical Society. Bob also developed a series of lab experiments for high schools to use in teaching chemistry, Small Scale Laboratory Manual, which continues to be used all over the United States.
Bob was invited to lecture in several foreign countries - Mexico, Russia, and Japan. He was an active member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), presenting numerous papers. He was a member of the Division of Chemical Education of the ACS and was the National Program Chair for this organization for three years. He also was a member of the National Science Teaching Association and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.
Four years before he retired, Bob and his wife moved back to Ithaca. After retirement, he volunteered at the Sciencenter and developed a chemistry show for visitors, Chemsations. He trained high school students to present these shows which are still offered in the Sciencenter auditorium. He also co-authored two grant proposals to the Dreyfus Foundation for funds to develop museum chemistry programs for children. In addition, he was a consultant for the Smithsonian Institution on the Science in American Life exhibition, and a consultant for American College Testing (ACT) for which he prepared six sets of examination questions for yearly examinations from 1985 until he retired.

Ann F. Elmo - February 14, 1950 - January 08, 2024

Departed: 01/08/2024 (Ithaca)
Obituary Preview: Ann Francis Elmo, 73, of Ithaca, New York, passed away January 8, 2024, at home with her family, after a vigorous battle against cancer for nearly 4 years.
Ann was born February 14, 1950, in Ithaca, to the late Alfred Thayer and Lina Albanese Thayer. She was the fourth of their five children. Ann graduated from Ithaca High School in 1968.
After spending her early years in rural Trumansburg, Ann’s family moved to Ithaca. In middle school she met the man she knew she would marry, Michael J. Elmo. The two dated for 6 years and were married on April 4, 1970.
Both Mike and Ann began studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses in the early 1970s and were moved to dedicate themselves to their God, Jehovah in 1977. Shortly after they were blessed with two children, Angela and Joey.
Life in the Elmo house was busy and full of activity. Ann was known as a loving and involved mother and for showing hospitality to many near and far. She was always ready to laugh or try to get you to laugh. Whether at a dance party in the garage, a large dinner at the house, or in the tents she had to have to entertain, she was determined to enjoy life and laugh with those she loved.
Ann and Mike also worked hard to care for those in need, willingly sacrificing their time and resources to look after others. They would make meals, help with repairs and cleaning, or anything else they could think of; the two of them are well known for their self-sacrificing love.
Ann’s firm faith in the promise from the Scriptures, that God’s Kingdom would permanently solve mankind’s problems, moved her to help others in the community to benefit from the truths taught in the Bible. That faith motivated her to share in the volunteer ministry full time for more than 23 years. Her efforts proved to help many, as she lovingly shared Bible principles, assisting them to be more honest, loving, and active members of our communities.
Ann lived her life full of confidence that she will see her loved ones again, just as Jesus promised at John 5:28, 29.
Ann is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Mike; their two children, Angela (Stephen) Hoffman, Joseph (Jennifer) Elmo; their grandchildren, Skyler, Madilena, Gavin, and Adley Hoffman; her siblings, Fred Thayer, Randy (Barb) Thayer, and June Gee; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The memorial service will be at 2:00pm, Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1201 Danby Road, Ithaca, NY 14850. The service will also be available on Zoom. Zoom Information - Meeting ID: 872 4341 7427 - Passcode: 040470
