Obituary Preview: Carol Ann Storrs Mitchell, 71, a resident of Palestine, Texas suddenly passed away on April 18th, 2024 when a car she was riding in was caught up in a multi vehicle accident on State HWY 155 at Berryville, Henderson County, Texas. Carol’s dear friends Cassandra Tait and Lisa Crawford were injured as a result of the accident. Due to the suddenness of her passing her family is profoundly saddened. It is comforting to know that Carol was not alone, but in the presence of friends that truly loved and cared for her at the time of her passing.
Carol was born on July 14, 1952 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Carol was the second child and first daughter of Adrian Albert Farrell Burk (AKA Ray Burk) and Neoma Lou (Pillow) Burk. Carol was born with a caring soul that she shared with the world, a deep love of animals and a steadfast loyalty to her friends and family.
Early life for Carol was full of struggles and adversity. Even though she dropped out of school in Jr High, Carol was truly a life long learner. In her 40’s Carol returned to school eventually earning a Bachelor Degree and 3 Master’s degrees in: Teaching, Special Education and Education Administration as well as being a semester away from completing her PHD in Education when she was forced to retire for health reasons. Carol thoroughly enjoyed her time at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen Washington, University of Phoenix, Grand Canyon University and Washington State University. Throughout her teaching career she taught Special Education at schools in Aberdeen, Washington, Queets Washington, Bullhead City Arizona, and Lake Havasu City Arizona.
Carol had many great loves in her life, First and foremost were her two children (Mikey & Jessi). Another great love that brought her great joy was her career as an educator. Throughout her career Carol focused on those kids that were “Special” or otherwise marginalized. Carol was loved by students, parents and colleagues alike. Carol spent a lifetime caring for others whether it was her younger sisters, her children, nieces and nephews or an assortment of friends and family. At the core of her being Carol was a rescuer. It could be needy and hurting people that Carol invited into her life and into her heart or a continuous assortment of cats and dogs. “Love Me Love My Cats” was one of Carol’s favorite sayings. Over the years Carol had dozens of cats, dogs and even rats as pets but any who know her knew that there was one little kitty by the name of Tomo that held a very special place in her heart. Books, books and more books. From an early age Carol lost herself in books. In later years Carol had several authors she considered friends and followed them religiously on Social Media. Carol always had a book she was reading and enjoyed sharing her fascination with books with anyone that would listen. Carol was also a wonderful cook that loved putting on dinner parties for just a few or for dozens at a time like her maternal grandparents 50th wedding anniversary party for the entire extended family. Other things that brought Carol joy were sewing, often creating amazing garments with patterns she created herself and baking and decorating cakes for family and friends.
Carol was a survivor. She survived a childhood wrought with heartache and strife, multiple medical emergencies and complications, earthquakes, Mount Saint Helens erupting and even Chernobyl.

Ronnie went on to receive his BS from The University of Eastern, New Mexico after which he taught and coached at Wink High School for many years. He later started S & W Enterprises, which he and Barbara owned and operated together for the duration of their lives.
While Ronnie’s life revolved around his wife and their four children, he had a lifelong love of music, horses, fishing, and John Wayne. Anyone who knew him, would say he was the best storyteller. Ronnie started singing with Roy Orbison and his first band in the Wink High School band hall bathroom because that’s where the acoustics were best. Ronnie sang, played the harmonica, loved to karaoke and could be heard singing in church every Sunday in the choir.
Ronnie lived for his Lord, his family, and his land. He was a lifelong Wink Wildcat and could often be heard telling of his 1952 state football championship game with pride. He loved his community, the Wink High School athletics and all the kids who went through.
Ronnie and Barbara had an open-door policy for everyone. They spent a lifetime of giving and touched the lives of many. They were everyone’s Nana and Papaw. They were known for their epic gardens, horse riding, and home cooked meals.
Ronnie was preceded in death on February 8, 2024, by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Ann Slaughter. He is survived by their children, Russ Slaughter, Karen Angel (Lance), Cheryl Parks (Marc); his grandchildren, Marcie Crossland, Mindy Henderson (John), Misti Jacquez (Teo), Casie Granada (Joseph), Cayla Barnett (Dakotah), Tate Slaughter (Claire), TyAnn Slaughter, Robbie Slaughter (Tracy), Josh Slaughter, Baylee Gilbert (Brenden), and McKenna Parks; along with his great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Roy and Chloe Slaughter; son, Bobby Slaughter; and grandsons Ronnie D. Slaughter and Coby Slaughter.
Ronnie and Barbara wished to be remembered together, the way they lived. Services for Ronnie and Barbara will be held at the Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, Texas at 1:00 pm on Saturday March 23, 2024. Barbara Ann Slaughter - February 24, 1939 - February 08, 2024

Departed: 02/08/2024 (Palestine)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Ann Slaughter was born February 24, 1939, in Kermit, Texas and passed away at her home in Elkhart, Texas on February 8, 2024. She was a devoted Christian mother of four, grandmother of fifteen, great-grandmother of thirty-eight and great-great-grandmother of five that all knew her as “Nana.”
She is survived by her loving husband, Ronnie L. Slaughter; children, Russ Slaughter, Karen Angel (Lance) and Cheryl Parks (Marc); her grandchildren Marcie Crossland, Mindy Henderson (John), Misti Jacquez (Teo), Casie Granado(Joseph), Cayla Barnett (Dakotah), Tate Slaughter (Claire), TyAnn Slaughter, Robbie Slaughter (Tracy), Josh Slaughter, Quinten Grubbs, Keith Grubbs, Baylee Gilbert (Brenden), and McKenna Parks; along with her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Willis of Grand Junction, Colorado. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jeanette and “Curley” Wilson; son, Bobby Slaughter; and grandsons Ronnie D. Slaughter and Coby Slaughter.
Barbara was a forever Wink Wildcat and was very proud of being the first drum major for the Mighty Wildcat Band as well as a cheerleader and a princess at the Sun Bowl Game during her high school years. The day after her high school graduation she married the love of her life, Ronnie Slaughter, and together they shared sixty-six years of marriage and created a beautiful life for their family. Along with being a busy mother of four, she was also the secretary for Wink High School for several years.
Barbara had a variety of hobbies and talents and her main specialties included sewing, crocheting, cooking, and gardening. She loved making satin pillowcases for her family, which was a tradition she carried on from her mother. She has also crocheted over three hundred Afghans for friends and family, stitched with love and care for each person.
Her door was always open with a home-cooked meal ready and waiting for good company and conversation. Her homemade buttermilk biscuits and gravy along with sourdough cinnamon rolls would be lovingly made when all the kids and friends would gather for a fun weekend at the ranch. Some fresh cows’ milk and homemade peach preserves would round out her now trendy “farm to table” lifestyle.
Her garden and plants were the talk of the town! Her garden would help feed multiple families and she would freeze and can all summer. Her house also looked like a jungle at times because she had so many plants and even had a plant room at her home in Graham. She could literally put a stick in the ground and make it grow into something beautiful…. that is truly a gift.
Barbara was the epitome of grace and beauty. She loved dressing up, making sure to never leave the house without being fully made up and most importantly, she was always a lady. Barbara especially loved her cheetah print coat and would proudly wear it to the Palestine football games cheering on her son-in-law, Lance. Nana was the loudest and proudest in the stands, no matter if it was a Wink Wildcat event or an event for one of her kids, grandkids, or great grandkids. All the kids knew that Nana was the ultimate cheerleader and could often be heard saying “Hey, Hey, Hey”!
The home was always filled with the love of dance, and she and Ronnie were quite the couple on the dance floor. Together, they taught many kids to dance either in their kitchen or on the “cement pad” outside. The love they shared was evident for all to see as they danced together.
She and Ronnie moved from the ranch in Wink to Graham, Texas in 1994, where they resided for the next 23 years. After a short stay back at the ranch, they moved into their daughter Karen and son-in-law, Lance’s home where they have been lovingly cared for by them, along with angel on earth, Paula Barnes.
Our lives are forever changed, and she will be missed dearly, but we have the assurance that she is healed and dancing on those streets of gold. In addition to her family, she leaves a legacy of love, kindness and creativity that will continue to inspire generations to come. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time-to be- born, and a time to die…a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-4)
