John Bernard Ward - October 17, 1946 - June 24, 2022

Departed: 06/24/2022 (Spokane Valley)
Obituary Preview: John Bernard Ward was born to Clarice E (Mudge) Ward and Tec. Sergeant Bernard Olaf Ward at Fort Benning, Georgia on October 17, 1946. John was the fourth child of nine, which included four younger brothers, and three older sisters and one younger. John’s father was a career military man, and at the time John was born, he was in the newly formed US Air Force.
In 1950, the family moved to Ladd Air Force Base, Fairbanks Alaska for three years before moving to Veradale, Washington when their father was transferred to Geiger Field Air Force Base in 1953. John attended Veradale Elementary from September to the end of December of that year. The family then moved into Spokane, where he attended St. Xavier’s Catholic School for the remainder of his primary education.
As a kid, John worked a paper route for the Spokane Daily Chronicle for which he earned Certificates of Merit in 1960 and 1961. As a member of the boy scouts, he earned several badges and pins for various accomplishments. Through these experiences of scouting and newspaper carrying, John was able to develop a sense of self-worth and initiative that served him well in his adult life. He graduated from John R. Rogers High School in 1964.
John began his racing car career in 1958 by participation in the “CHEVROLET” Soap Box Derby. The rules stated the boy had to build the car himself, with minimal parental help. Sponsored by John’s father’s business, Broadway Ash Service and VFW Post 51, the car entered in the Derby. This was the day of John’s first race car “crash” as he slapped the curb when his brakes jammed after passing the finish line. He was not alone in this mishap; other drivers also ran the police barricade one hundred yards below the finish line. In later years, John said this was due to the cars being Chevrolets not FORDS. Years later, a local Ford dealership approached him to make a commercial for them. He readily agreed, but only if he could express his thoughts and comments, not say someone else’s words. The company agreed to this, and John made an intelligent, worthwhile advertisement for the Ford Company which aired on TV many times.
After graduation John worked as a “Carney” operator and mechanic for the big rides. It was in this capacity in Kalispell, Montana he met his future wife, Linda Atteberry. In 1966, Boeing Aircraft hired him, and it was while working there he was drafted into the Army. On June 12, 1966, he was inducted and went to Camp Roberts for basic training. After completing basic training, he returned to Spokane while on leave and married Linda on August 27, 1966. John served in the Army engineering corps while in Viet Nam and was stationed near Ho Chi Minh City, formally known as Saigon. He said that his battalion would build bridges during the day and the Viet Cong forces would blow them up during the night, so they were building the same bridges over and over. One of our country’s fortunate service members to return from Viet Nam on June 12, 1968, with the rank of SP 4, and remained in the Armed Forces Standby Reserve. His service to his country ended with an honorable discharge on June 12, 1972. He settled into married/family life and his chosen career as a truck driver for TNT United Truck Lines.
John began his racing career in earnest at the Spokane Fairgrounds in 1969 with a self-built 1955 Ford in the Claimer class. In 1972, brother Bob was shipping out for Viet Nam, so John took over Bob’s car number, 54 and the rest is history. As number 54, John would race for 50 years on the local speedways and racetracks in the Spokane area often in the company of his brothers, nephews, cousins, and in later years, his son, JC Ward. The two would spend many a days, weeks, months, and years in their garage and at the racetrack. JC learned how to put engines together, how to tear them apart, and how to drive a car on the track to win the race from his dad, knowledge John would also share with a few of his nephews. Car 54 was retired at the end of the 2019 season and John with it, after 50 years of stock car racing with family, friends, and fans.
John became seriously ill on May 3, 2022 and was taken to the VA hospital. He spent the next 53 days between hospitals and the Cheney Care Center, battling a severe infection that had settled in both his legs. He passed away on June 24th at Sacred Heart Hospital.
John was preceded in death by his one and only son JC Ward, his father Bernard O. Ward, his mother Clarice E. Ward, three of his sisters, Grace Ann Kassa, DeeDee Fischer, Caroline Ward, and one brother, Arthur Ward. He is survived by his one and only daughter, Tanya Ward, sister Mary Ward, three brothers, Bob, David, and George. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins some of whom were very close to him and instrumental in keeping him and/or his cars on the racetrack in his declining years. He will be greatly missed at the racetrack, shouting orders to anyone with-in earshot, and mostly to all who loved him dearly. A Celebration of Life will be held on, July 24th at Rob Ballard’s home, 6821 N Regal at 1 PM. To share memories of John and leave condolences for the family, visit John's Tribute Wall

Christian Jauregui - November 18, 1982 - June 12, 2022

Departed: 06/12/2022 (Spokane Valley)
Obituary Preview: Christian P. Jauregui, 39, passed away from liver disease and kidney failure on Sunday, June 12, 2022, in Spokane Valley, Washington. He was born to Alfredo and Martha Jauregui in Santa Monica, California, on November 18, 1982.
Christian married Jicela Tayna Jaime at St. Pius X Church in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Together they had one son, Christian “Lalito”. Christian was a full-hearted Catholic and enjoyed attending St. George the most.
Christian graduated from Post Falls High School, earned his insurance license, and went on to work as an insurance producer. He worked for Farmers Insurance for the majority of his adult life. There was no other job he loved to do more than insurance and he was good at it. All of his clients loved him. He hardly every complained about the job. He truly cared about his clients. Christian was a simple and loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He loved to cook for everyone. Football was his favorite sport to watch, followed by UFC boxing. He was part of a fantasy football league every year-- he even got first place one year! He also enjoyed playing video games. No matter how terrifying a ride at an amusement park looked, you could always count on him to be the first one to say, “I’m down!”
Christian had an interesting and unique sense of humor. He could turn a dull or sad moment into a fun one and before you knew it, he had you laughing. If you didn’t know him, Christian may have come off as arrogant or some would say selfish, but nothing could be further from the truth. He always put Lalito and Jicela first. You could always count on him to be there if you ever needed him. Nothing pleased him more than seeing his loved ones smile. As most of us know, he had to always look top-notch with every hair in its place. We are all going to miss you, Honeysuckle! Rest in Peace.
Christian is survived by his wife, Jicela Tayna Jauregui and their son Christian Hilario “Lalito” Jauregui (Lalito’s first name comes from our favorite person and his middle name from Christian’s beloved uncle). Also survived by his brother Alfred, who is the oldest and the one to show him the ropes of life, and Manny, the “baby” of the family, a great example of what it’s like to be a good father in this day and age. Also survived by his mother, Martha, who taught him morals, how to truly treat a lady, and to believe God always has his best interests at heart. Survived by his father, Alfredo, who taught him how to be strong and not just follow-through, but to keep his word, and no matter what. His dad also taught him that family comes first and that hard work pays off in the long run. Also survived by his paternal grandmother, Tita, and maternal grandmother, Elena.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Lupe, who taught him how to play trompo; his paternal grandfather; his tio, Hilario; and tio, Oscar.
A funeral mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1503 W. Dean Ave, Spokane, WA 99201. Following the mass, an open-casket vigil and reception will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home, 1315 N. Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99206. What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who may want to attend the funeral or send condolences. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, survivors (family members), predeceased relatives, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and funeral service information. However, the content can vary depending on the individual's life and the family's preferences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to ensure their life story is told accurately and honestly. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more.

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may have a delay of several days or even weeks.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

Don't worry! Many funeral homes and online obituary platforms offer assistance with writing and editing obituaries. You can also ask a trusted friend or family member for help.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Can I create an online memorial instead of an obituary?
