Paul R. Marte, Sr., Esq. - August 26, 1927 - December 20, 2021

Departed: 12/20/2021 (West Warwick)
Obituary Preview: On December 20, 2021, Paul R Marte, Sr. died peacefully at home, exactly as he wished, on his beloved Block Island.  He was 94 years old. He is survived by Sally, his wife of 61 years, their children Paul (Matthew Alland), Peter (Rochelle), and Susan (Bryan Sweet), and grandchildren Hannah and Cooper. He is predeceased by his parents and sister Marjorie.
Paul was born in 1927 in Manchester, CT to Louis and Gladys (Rising) Marte.  After graduating from Manchester High School in 1945, he served in the Navy towards the end of World War II. Post-war, he attended Trinity College in Hartford for his undergraduate degree and then attended law school at Boston University.  He completed his law degree in 1954 and proudly passed the bar on his first attempt.  After a post-college tour through Europe, he started a small law firm in Manchester in 1955.  He continued at that practice, growing it over the years, until his retirement in the last 1990s.  Prior to retirement, he returned to school to attain his certification as a Master Gardner from the University of Connecticut.  After he retired, he and Sally moved full time to their island home on Block Island.
He was active in the communities where he lived. He was a member of Rotary, holding the position of president for many years.  He was a Mason.  He was a member of the American Legion on Block Island. He was on numerous boards over the years, both in CT and on BI.  He was active in the library, the BI Gardeners, the Shellfish Commission and Harbor Baptist Church on BI and at Center Congregational Church in Manchester. A last honor bestowed upon him was being the recipient of the Boston Post Cane award, a century-old tradition which is given to the oldest resident in the community. He enjoyed the recognition, and appreciated the honor, even though it was in his final days.
Paul loved his garden, his family (most especially his wife), reading, talking, church, martinis and singing.  He was forever quizzical and interested in a range of subjects (though gardening was always at the top of that list).  He could find the funny side of anything, and he was always keen to share his inside take on things.
He had an obsession with his blueberry bushes.  Not so much the bushes themselves but the number of blueberries picked annually.  Anyone helping themselves to the berries was free to do so as long as they kept a tally and reported it to him.  He recorded the numbers in his little book, year in, year out.  He would tell anyone interested, and even those who weren’t, the running total and how it compared to previous years’ harvests.
He was a counsellor and enjoyed connecting with people.  He had dozens of good friends over the years, many who have predeceased him, but some were still part of his life up until his passing.  The telephone was a lifeline to him, and even in his last week he was making calls each day to people important to him. His mind remained sharp and his interest still keen.

Obituary Preview: Major General Philip James Conley, Jr., USAF (Ret.) died peacefully on October 7, 2021, in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 94.
A native of West Warwick, Rhode Island, Phil was born on May 22, 1927, to Philip J. Conley, DDS, and Lillian L. Burns. In his youth, he was active in Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Following attendance at La Salle Academy and Providence College, he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy, graduated in 1950, and was offered a commission in the newly formed (1947) United States Air Force. During the Korean War, he flew 100 combat missions as a forward air controller with the First British Commonwealth Division. He then earned an advanced degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Michigan.
While living in Ann Arbor, he met Shirley Andrews and they were married in 1956. During his Air Force career, Phil became a command pilot with over 4,200 hours in 86 different aircraft types, including the F-15, F-16, B-52 and B-1. Isabel was a very skilled seamstress and loved to embroider, producing beautiful work. She enjoyed her plants and gardens. She enjoyed going on trips to see the well- known gardens of the northeast. Of all the things she enjoyed, she loved nothing more than having time with her family. Whether it be a quick stop in by one of the kids or a big family get-together, she always wanted to see the family. And nothing put her more in her happy place than cradling and rocking one of the new-born grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There are so many photos of her just beaming while holding the newest addition to the family.
Her soft smile, her mother’s intuition and wisdom, her caring for all the family will be greatly missed beyond what words can describe. She was a communicant of SS. Peter & Paul Church in West Warwick, RI.

Linda S. Powers - July 26, 1947 - July 17, 2021

Departed: 07/17/2021 (West Warwick)
Obituary Preview: Linda Ann Sullivan Powers passed away unexpectedly at her home on Black Rock Road on July 17, 2021, just nine days before her 74th birthday. Linda was born on July 26, 1947 to Margaret and Joseph Sullivan of Wellesley, Mass where she grew up with her siblings Michael, Mary Jane, and Thomas. As a young child she contracted polio and survived, although it turned out to have some physical impact later in her life. She attended Bates elementary and Wellesley High School where she played field hockey and thrived in a strong academic program that nurtured her curiosity about languages, cultures, and the workings of the world. She graduated from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in 1969 as a Russian language major. In June 1969, Linda married the love of her life, Lewis (Jerry) Powers. They lived in Hartford until 1972, when they moved to the Westminster School in Simsbury, CT where Jerry taught art while Linda, having earned her master’s degree in teaching, taught first grade in Windsor Locks. As a social person she thrived in the positive community atmosphere of Westminster. Soon Linda and Jerry had two sons, Lewis (Jay) and Sam, and she stopped teaching to focus on being a mother. She never lost contact with teaching however, serving as Campfire and Cub Scout Den mother and Sunday School teacher. She later returned to the classroom as a wonderfully creative volunteer in Simsbury and as a long-term substitute on Block Island. While raising Jay and Sam, she also became a dedicated wrestling-and-soccer-mom, (as well as an exceptional tailgater). Linda took great joy in people and served as a second mother to countless soccer and wrestling teammates, Westminster and Yale students, and West Point Cadets. As an exceptionally caring person she also dedicated herself to a number of causes. She was a devout Catholic who strove to make the world a better place in any way she could. She was gifted at organizing things and had an unyielding thirst for knowledge.
A great part of her love of learning was travel and the process of planning it. One of the great highlights of the family’s life was living in a small town in southern France for a year when Jerry had a sabbatical.
In 2000 Linda and Jerry moved to Block Island where they became part of another extraordinary, small community. On the island she worked at Town Hall, eventually serving as the tax collector, was treasurer of the Spring Street Gallery, and served in leadership positions at Saint Andrews. Among her recent enthusiasms were gardening, selling jewelry at the Not New Boutique, and learning American Sign Language.
