Brian Eugene Fay - August 31, 1961 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Warroad)
Obituary Preview: Brian E. Fay, (62), of Warroad, Minnesota, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on April 8th, 2024, comfortable in his chair at home, surrounded by family – exactly where he wanted to be.
Brian was born to Martha and Tom Fay, on August 31st, 1961 in Watseka, Illinois. An adventurous boy, his childhood was filled with exploring in the woods, ice skating with his sister, riding bikes around the neighborhood until dark, and fishing trips up to Minnesota with his dad and brother. Following high school, Brian married and to this union, five children were born: Andrea, Samantha, Erica, Brian, and Ben. Brian later remarried and gained two step-children, Fred and Sara Schulte, and then finally the addition of Seth to round out his family.
In 1994, Brian and Cinderella bought a piece of land up in Lake of the Woods to raise their large family. They cleared the land and began building. The pictures and stories during this period of life are treasured by the family for their very unique upbringing. His family from Illinois loved making the trip “Up North” to see the progress and help pitch in where they could. Forever a hard worker, Brian worked at Lake of the Woods School as a bus driver and did many woodworking jobs in addition to completing his own cabin.
Brian decided that the bachelor life was the life for him, and he moved over to Warroad where he made his final home. He worked at Marvin with pride for nearly 20 years, receiving an Award of Excellence for his outstanding performance. We think the award description suits him well because he made a “lasting contribution with his strong work ethic, vast knowledge of the equipment and dedication to getting the job done accurately and efficiently” in all the things he did, far beyond his time at Marvin.
Brian is survived by five children, Andrea (Chris) Lancaster, Samantha (Troy) Mohrmann, Erica Fay, Brian (Teresa) Fay, and Ben (Ashley) Fay; 16 grandchildren, Makenzie, Taylor, Kaylee, Cheyanne, Eithan, Brynn, Maximus, Trinady, Collin, Connor, Ezekiel, Tatum, Laney, Paislee, Daxtyn, and Lennyx; mother, Martha Howe; siblings Julia Rene (Frank) Posillico and Myron (Mary) Fay.
Brian was preceded in death by his father, Tom Fay, step-father, Bert Howe, son, Seth Fay, and grandson, Joey Taylor Jr.

Deanne "Nanny" Johnson - August 02, 1957 - March 22, 2024

Departed: 03/22/2024 (Warroad)
Obituary Preview: A Funeral Service for Deanne "Nanny" Johnson of Warroad, MN will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 11:00AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Warroad, MN. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 5-7PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place in Devils Lake, ND at a later date.
Deanne “Nanny” (Foster) Johnson of Warroad, MN, and formerly of Devils Lake, ND, passed away on Friday, March 22 after a five-year battle with pancreatic cancer.  She passed away at home surrounded by family.
Deanne (Nanny) and her twin sister Denise (Nee Nee) were born August 2, 1957, to Donald and Myrtle (Grover) Foster in Warroad, MN.  The youngest of twelve children, Nanny was orphaned after her mom died of cancer when she was three, and her dad died of cancer when she was four.  The twins were taken care of by sisters Rita, Vonnie, and Nancy at their family home, then later lived with their aunt and uncle, Dean and Mildred Foster.  It perhaps was this tragic beginning in life that gave Nanny such a strong mothering influence, and prompted her to want to be a foster parent, as well as provide a loving home for her own children.  It also influenced her career as a social worker and family counselor.
Nanny married the love of her life, Les Johnson, on July 7, 1979, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Warroad.  They lovingly supported each other as they raised their children, Bruce, Jessica, and Brady.  Les and Nan also took in several foster children, some staying only briefly in emergency situations, but some remained closely connected to the family.  Nanny continued to be mom and grandma to some of them and their children.  With each of the children, her own or others, Nanny made sure they felt loved and valued.
Education was important to Nanny.  She earned an associate degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota, Moorhead; and later, a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.  When the children were grown, she went back to UND to earn her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in social work, graduating in 2007.  Nanny worked for many years with the Department of Juvenile Services in Devils Lake.  She worked for PATH and the AASK program, placing children for adoption, which she dearly loved.  She also was a social worker at the hospital in Devils Lake.  Upon moving back to Minnesota in 2015, Nanny worked for The Village Family Services as a counselor.
Nanny and Les and their family lived most of their lives in Devils Lake, ND.  While in Devils Lake, Les and Nanny made lifelong friendships through their work and involvement in community groups such as Newcomers Club, and time spent with hockey and work friends.  Their little get-away on Devils Lake offered much fun and laughter, and many delicious walleye feasts.  Nanny and Les loved to fish and entertain together at the lake.
The family’s lives were forever changed when Les and Nanny’s youngest son, Brady, died from injuries sustained in a car accident on October 11, 2002.  Nanny and Les faced many difficulties and tragedies together, taking everything in stride to make the best of things and carry on.  Nanny’s battle with cancer was the one thing they couldn’t overcome.  Family was an important focus for Nanny, and she always looked forward to the annual Foster Family Reunions.  Many of her sisters surrounded her during her last days, helping to keep her comfortable and surrounded by love.  Nanny’s bond with her twin NeeNee was so strong, NeeNee retired in 2019 to help take care of Nanny.  Her help and support will be forever treasured and appreciated.  Nanny’s first and last breaths in life were shared with NeeNee.
Nanny will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Les, of 44 years; son, Bruce Johnson of Warroad, MN; daughter, Jessica Johnson of Devils Lake, ND;  foster daughter Kris-Tina (Brian) Pieper of Rapid City, ND; grandchildren, Dailyn Crough and her two children of Pennsylvania; Chloe Gefroh (Ryan) of Fargo, ND; Gannon Gefroh (Neveah), and Ladon Johnson, both of Warroad.  Nanny is also survived by her twin sister “NeeNee” (Leigh) Hammer of Crookston, MN, and their children Dominick (Jen) and Casey (Maria); siblings, Donna Muirhead, Vonnie (Doug) Johnson and Rita Brewster, all of Warroad; Joe (Sandy) Foster of St. Louis, MO; Nancy Diesen of Hillsdale, MI; Mike Foster of Maple Grove, MN; Barbara Sheffield of Fernandina Beach, FL; Dolores “Tubby” (Leroy) Falk and Roberta (Doni) Brunell of Roseau; brother-in-law Darrell Mack; special cousin, Val Landin of Warroad; Les’s siblings, Don (Narissa) Johnson of Thailand, and Janet Johnson (Pete Sandstrom) of Roseau, MN.  Nanny is also survived by an aunt, Beatrice Peterson of Apple Valley, MN;  and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and others to whom she has provided support and love throughout the years and considered family.
Nanny was preceded in death by her son, Brady; parents, Donald and Myrtle Foster; aunt and uncle Dean and Mildred Foster; sister, Gloria Mack; mother and father-in-law, Irene and Clarence Johnson; brother-in-law, Alan Johnson; brothers-in-law, Jim Brewster, Don Diesen, and Pete Muirhead; sister-in-law, LouAnne Foster; niece, Jennifer Grove and baby Jordan; many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Blessed be the memory of Deanne (Nanny) Johnson!

Cora Ravndalen - April 15, 1929 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Warroad)
Obituary Preview: A funeral service for Cora Ingalls Ravndalen of Warroad, MN will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 10:00AM at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church in Roosevelt, MN. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 5-7PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad, MN and also one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Interment will take place at Silent City Cemetery in Roosevelt, MN. In Lieu of flowers the family would like memorial gifts made to: Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church P.O.Box 161 Roosevelt, MN 56673 Online at: https://tithe.ly/give?c=6287996
Cora Ingalls Ravndalen was born on the Ingalls Farm on April 15, 1929, in Spruce Valley Township near Middle River, Minnesota to Anna Jutilda Josephina Magnuson Ingalls and Ethel Leroy Ingalls.
Cora was the 11th of 12 children, all born on the farm.  This farm was the former townsite of Ingalls, Minnesota where Cora's grandfather, William Henry Ingalls was the founding father of the town in the 1880's.
Cora begged to go to school when her older sister Gladys went, and although she was only 5, the teacher said if she kept up she could stay.  Most days she would walk 2 miles to school or for faster transportation, Bonnie the family horse would deliver by buggy or sleigh depending on the time of year.
This began her lifelong love of education--for she graduated from Middle River High School at 16, went to Thief River Falls Teacher's Training College, graduating at 17 and began her 30-year teaching career at 18 years of age. Her first teaching job was at the Roosevelt School in 1947, then moving to the Williams School in the early 1950's teaching mostly 2nd grade while continuing her education at Bemidji State University.
It was at this time she met Alvin Ravndalen, a local farmer and lumberjack, and had their first date at the Nite Hawk in Roosevelt where they enjoyed dinner and dancing.
They were married June 5, 1949, at First Lutheran Church in Middle River.  Alvin and Cora purchased their first house from Alvin's brother Ted in 1949 in Roosevelt.  Alvin began his farm career with his 5 brothers, and they worked individually and together clearing land and farming the acres that has become Ravndalen Farms. They also worked together as lumberjacks in the winter months until retirement in the 1980's.
On August 17, 1962, Milo and Mark came to live with Cora and Alvin from Lutheran Social Services in Minneapolis.  After 13 years of marriage Alvin and Cora had decided they wanted a family and applied for adoption. One day while picking blueberries, they got word from Lutheran Social Services they had a child—but would they take twins instead?  They said yes, changing their lives forever.
In July 1964 Merlin was born in Warroad to Alvin and Cora and now Alvin had 3 sons, all farm workers and dedicated rock pickers!  Cora and Alvin were passionate, involved, and very caring parents, encouraging their sons to excel, not only in farming but in all aspects of education and life.
In the 1980's Cora retired from teaching and Alvin from farming to enjoy their hobbies, community, and traveling.  Cora was very involved in Mt. Carmel Church, the Cancer Society, the Garden Club, and the Retired Teachers Club.  Cora loved her local communities splitting time in Roosevelt, Williams, and Warroad.  Their farm home was "a buzz" with neighbors, friends, and family gatherings from both the Ingalls and Ravndalen sides.  The coffee pot was always "on" or ready to brew.
Alvin passed away on April 21, 2001, and Cora continued to live on the family farm home until July 2019.  She made the best of it, enjoyed her time, and continued to help her brothers-in-law, and sisters and brothers as they aged and passed.
In July 2019 Cora moved into the Warroad Senior Living Center in the Assisted Living wing.  She graciously transitioned to this new style of life and lived there for 4 years and 8 months with the greatest care from the wonderful staff.  While in Warroad, she reconnected with past neighbors and forged new friendships with those living there and the staff.
On February 29 Cora suffered a heart attack and after 6 days moved from the Roseau Hospital to the Warroad Senior Living Center in the Skilled Care wing. On March 15, Cora passed away and went to join those whom she loved who had gone before her.  Cora passed at the age of 94 years and 11 months.
Cora enjoyed playing and winning at farkle, bingo, bananagrams, solitaire, crossword puzzles, and sudoku.  For many years she enjoyed her church, quilting, rosemaling and was passionate about making birthday and wedding cakes when asked by family and friends. She loved picking blueberries, gardening, canning, and her flower beds.  She treasured her roadtrips back to her childhood hometown of Middle River. She enjoyed being a grandma, traveling with friends, nieces and nephews, hosting parties, and watching grandchildren play both boys and girls hockey, and made many meals over the years for the Ravndalen Deer Hunting Camp.  Her home hallways were sometimes transformed to a hockey rink by grandsons.  The "red room" in her home became "Camp Corky" during the hockey school years for granddaughters and friends. The treehouse in the backyard willow trees were a favorite for many children and friends.  Her Halloween popcorn balls were enjoyed by 3 generations of families and her caramel rolls were devoured by many including entire girl and boy hockey teams!
Her personal traits included being kind, generous, thoughtful, accepting, a life-long learner, and an advocate for the underdog.  She loved her churches, both Ebenezer and Mt Carmel, and had a strong faith.  Cora was also fond of reconnecting with former students that she had taught in her classroom, of which she had many that lived in the local area.
Two of her favorite sayings were "the best is yet to come" and "don't be sad that it's over....be happy that it happened"!  Her positive attitude was one we could all admire and learn from each day.
Cora is preceded in death by the love of her life, Alvin, parents Ethel and Anna, brothers and sisters Willie, Mabel, Arsa, Edith, Clarence, Ellen, Gladys, and Betty.  Three siblings died in infancy and early years Baby Ingalls, Anna and Edith.  She was also preceded by her brothers-in-law Ted Tunheim, Eli Erickson, Lyle Blahauvietz, Melvin Larson, and Anfin Blakstvedt; sister-in-law, Allene Ingalls.  Cora was also preceded in death by Alvin's parents Olav and Ingeborg, sisters and brothers and their wives and husbands, Olaf and Evie, Jergan, Gunval, Ted and Betsy, Otto and Eileen, Tillie and Charlie, and Marie and Al.
Cora is survived by her three sons--Mark, Milo and Merlin and wives Karleen, Kathleen, and partner Joe Disterhaupt.  She is also survived by 4 grandsons and their wives -- Garrett and Bree, Bryce and Cassie, Daniel and Brittany, and Terrance and Lexi, and 3 granddaughters in Kalley, Haley, and Macey.  Cora is also survived by 8 great grandchildren,14 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

Lorraine Kellogg - August 08, 1938 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Warroad)
Obituary Preview: Lorraine Kellogg passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Brainerd, MN, on March 4, 2024. She was born in Warroad, MN, on August 8, 1938, to John and Evangeline Pick.
After graduating from Warroad High School, she completed Licensed Practical Nurses Training in Thief River Falls, MN, and then worked for a brief time at Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Returning home to Warroad, MN, she met Marvin Kellogg, editor of the local newspaper, and they were later married October 4, 1959. Together they owned “The Glass Block” clothing store and built a log cabin gift shop called the “Trading Post”, serving the local tourists. In 1964, they sold their businesses in Warroad and moved to Longville, MN, where they purchased “The Sport Shop”. In 1980, they opened “Kellogg’s Northwoods Gift Shop”, and later, Lorraine operated “The Summer Place”.
It is here, in Longville, they built the home they loved on the Lake. Lorraine enjoyed her flowers, especially her delphiniums, and watching Marv’s coming and going with his float plane on the lake. Together they would also fly back and forth to visit family and friends up North.
They enjoyed spending Thanksgiving with her two sisters and their families and would then head south to Winter in Florida. She planted orchids there and enjoyed their fruit trees, bringing back oranges and grapefruit to be shared with family and friends.
Lorraine was incredibly talented in art, having previously done oil paintings; she tried something new, and became a member of the Naples Porcelain Artists. It was here that her love of China painting began, every year she created many beautiful pieces. In later years when her nephews and nieces and their families would stop to visit, they would always enjoy seeing them and hearing her enthusiasm when she talked about making them. After Marv’s passing in 2015, she continued making the fudge and operating “Kellogg’s Northwoods Gift Shop” until her retirement. Lorraine was an independent and strong-willed lady, who desired to remain in her home, even when her health was failing. When we would try to encourage her to consider moving into a senior retirement home, we were always reminded who was in charge, and told to put any notion of that to rest!
The family has many wonderful memories of spending time with Marv and Lorraine in Longville during the summer, where the nieces and nephews enjoyed Turtle Races, famous fudge, huge ice cream cones, fishing, plane rides, and simply spending time with them at their stores.
As her family, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the many friends and family who stopped by to visit, bring her meals and treats, run errands, take her to appointments, or called to check up on her. Your acts of kindness were all greatly appreciated.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Family Funeral Chapel, Baxter.

Frank Raymond Marvin - October 28, 1941 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Warroad)
Obituary Preview: Frank Raymond Marvin, husband, brother, father, grandfather, businessman, friend, and one of the most thoughtful men we all knew, died March 2, 2024 in his beloved hometown of Warroad, Minnesota. He was 82.
Frank was born on October 28, 1941 in Warroad, MN to Margaret Wallin Marvin and William S. Marvin. Frank loved his childhood, especially the small-town freedom to play with abundant neighborhood friends. He was a proud eldest brother to five siblings, and at Warroad High School, Frank made friendships he treasured for the rest of his life.
After pursuing college and landing a first job in glass sales, Frank married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Johnston, in 1966. Soon after, he was pleased to accept his father’s request to join the family business. Frank served over 42 years at Marvin Windows and Doors, including four years as Vice President of Sales and 11 years as company president. Together with his father, uncles, cousins, and siblings, he helped steer the company toward its current status as a world-renowned manufacturer headquartered in Warroad.
Frank and Margaret went on to raise six children and celebrate 57 years of marriage in Warroad.  The great joy of their marriage was family time, especially family celebrations, annual trips to Pine Acres Island, fishing, swimming, picnics, family road trips, hockey and sporting events, saunas, and always meals together around the kitchen table. Spare time was rare for Frank, but he loved the occasional bird hunting trips he shared with his father, uncle, and hunting friends to Saskatchewan.
At home, Frank’s values of loyalty, humility and personal responsibility facilitated a true, loving partnership with Marg. He deeply trusted her parental instincts and knowledge about children. He respected her faith and values. Marg was assured by Frank’s emotional steadiness, his vigilance about finances and practical matters, and his vision for the future. As a father, Frank expected his children to do their best in work and school, plan for the future, do right by others, remember to “thank the Big Guy upstairs,” and always, always pay their bills on time! His family knew him as a tough grader; his B+ was anyone else’s A+. But to his kids, Dad’s B+ was encouraging. Its message was: be humble and keep reaching. Ultimately, he gave his children and grandchildren the best foundation for life: the safety and security of a figure who planned for them, put them first, and accepted them as they are.
Frank made others feel special. He had a gift for connecting with and remembering unique facts about others. He composed thoughtful letters and voicemails, rarely missed a retirement party, was a regular at Saturday coffee and dice, showed extra love with his famous $2 bills or sticks of gum, recognized his siblings’ birthdays and others’ accomplishments, generously supported local kids in fundraising for sports and activities, and for years handed out gifts as Santa at his beloved St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
Frank was deeply grateful for and cognizant of the hard work of his peers in the community, and he believed in investing in Warroad and surrounding communities. He and his siblings supported the development of the Warroad Senior Living Center. Frank and Marg were longtime supporters of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation and the St. Paul and Minnesota Foundation. Most recently, Frank and Marg envisioned a place for the whole community to gather, celebrate, and foster the types of connection Frank found so meaningful in his life. This dream became RiverPlace, an arts, culture, and events center set to open in Warroad later this year.
Frank is preceded in death by his parents, William S. Marvin and Margaret Wallin Marvin, his sister Margaret (Peggy) Johnson and her husband Sam Johnson, two infant siblings, father-and mother-in-law Dorrance and Eudora Johnston, step-mother-in-law Pearl Johnston, brothers-in-law Albert (Linda) Johnston and David (Karin) Johnston. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his children, Ginny (Pete Anderson) and children Graham, Mimi, Julia, and Liam; Dan (Kristie) and children Jake, Bo, Matthew, and Luke; Paul (Maureen) and children Owen, Emmett, Griffin, Caroline, Mary Kate, and Nora; Willy (Bobbie) and children CeCe, Annie, and Oliver; Katy (John Kirchner) and children Jackson, Henry, Isabelle, and Bennett; Sarah and children Raymond, Louise, and Salvador; siblings Jake, George (Mary), Susan (Keith Schwartzwald), and Bob (Loralee); and brother-in-law Jack (Rita) Johnston.

She was married on August 6, 1959, in Marshall, MN, to Vernon “Penny” Howard Nash. They resided in Milwaukee, WI, Lexington, KY, and Ashland, KY, before returning to Warroad in 1974. Marie loved to follow Penny to the baseball field where he coached Legion and Muskie baseball for over 20 years. Although she was always with Penny at the field, this was more of his passion. Her greatest love, after Penny, was her love of flowers and her dog Harry. She spent countless hours with Harry by her side, preparing bulbs to be planted and transplanted, making small gardens in the backyard, and setting up hanging baskets and various yard decorations to make things cozy. Barbara "Barb" Ann Bukowiec - August 03, 1940 - November 06, 2023

Departed: 11/06/2023 (Warroad)
Obituary Preview: On Monday, Nov. 6, we said goodbye to our mother and grandmother, Barb Bukowiec. Per Barb’s wishes, following her death, there is to be no burial and no funeral service. She said she always hated going to funerals. However, none of us could let her go without acknowledging how special this woman was and how she enriched all of our family’s lives and the lives and so many others. Born and raised in Illinois, Barb had great interest in math, science, and engineering. She said she drove her father crazy because she always wanted to be out in the shop with him working on things. She was also quite an artist. We never realized this until she showed us an old sketch book, full of drawings she had done. In college, she was part of many theater productions, mostly musicals due to her beautiful singing voice. During her college years, she would eventually choose to become an English teacher. Also during that time, in 1962, she married Stan Bukowiec, and after having three children, she finished earning her Bachelor’s degree. Her teaching career commenced in the Joliet, IL, area where both she and her husband taught English, instructing literally many hundreds of students over the years to read, to write, and to appreciate literature Barb and Stan both had a love for the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. They decided it was time to leave Illinois in search of a less populated area in which they could enjoy those things. In 1972, their journey would take them to Baudette, MN, where Barb took a position as a high school English teacher and Stan took a position as the high school principal. They thoroughly enjoyed living in the North Woods, embracing fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling. True, there were some things they couldn’t get in Baudette. Barb couldn’t find bagels anywhere, so being an accomplished cook and baker, she made her own. Stan decided to take a break from education and bought Rainy River Lodge on Wheeler’s Point Road. They became resort owners, although Barb continued to teach while helping with the resort. She could drive the launch as well as Stan and was the accomplished navigator on Lake of the Woods. After some years as resort owners, Stan felt the call to return to education. They both secured teaching positions at Turtle Mountain Community High School in Belcourt, ND. They would remain teaching there until Stan died in 1999 and Barb retired. Once again, they embraced the lifestyle they found themselves in, making friends and exploring the local, Native American culture. Barb really went the extra mile to teach her students and try to make it fun and memorable. While teaching a segment about “Olde English,” she set up a Madrigal dinner for her students. To generate interest in Shakespeare, she had them watch Hamlet starring Mel Gibson. Once their children had all graduated from high school, they purchased their “dream home,” an old house that had been empty for years but was full of hand-painted woodwork, etched transoms, and other unique features. It was perfect place to showcase the antiques they both collected. The house was in Perth, ND, a ghost town of sorts with only five houses and ten miles of gravel to travel in any direction to get to an asphalt road. Barb continued to live there after Stan passed away and after she retired from teaching. It was her sanctuary. She enjoyed the time spent caring for her yard and going to auctions with her next-door neighbor, Maxine. When Tom and I married in 1990, I felt blessed because my mother-in-law was like a best friend. In 2010, she called one evening and asked us how we would feel if she sold her house, put an addition on our house and came to live with us. We all gave her a resounding “Yes!” I remember our boys jumping up and down chanting, “We get Grandma!” In 2011, her addition was completed, her house sold, and she moved in with us full-time. We all benefitted from her presence. It was a dream as a working mom to come home to a clean house and a delicious supper on the table. We had a blast! Grandma came to all of the band concerts and baseball games. Our sons have so many wonderful memories of driving around in Grandma’s “bad-**s” Dodge, 4-wheel-drive pick-up with a HEMI while rocking out to Bon Jovi, the Bee Gees, and Paul Simon. Truly, the coolest Grandma in the world. In 2018, Barb was diagnosed with stomach cancer and dementia. What followed were endless appointments, chemo therapy, and a gradual loss of her ability to form words, to write, and to perform simple tasks. During this time, she and I had many conversations about life. The one that stands out in particular was a time when she said, “If I had it to do all over again, I would still be a teacher.” I found this amazing, because most of us, myself included, would choose to do things differently. I asked her, “Why?” I will never forget her response. She said, “I loved the kids. I loved it when I taught them something and I would see them get that spark in their eyes that told me that they got it.” A testimony to her calling as a teacher. It was our intention to care for Barb at our home for the duration. However, after four years, her condition was such that she needed to be placed at the Warroad Senior Living Center. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the dedicated staff who work there. They do their job with competence, respect, dedication, compassion, and love for their residents. The work they do is never acknowledged or appreciated enough; they are angels walking among us. Rest in peace, Barbara. Your work here is done. You will be remembered in the hearts and minds of thousands of students that you educated, encouraged, and inspired. As your family, we will never forget you. I will leave you with lines from the eternal William Shakespeare that Barb often quoted. If you had Barb as a teacher, you probably already know it: Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine ownself be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any[one]. Farewell: my blessing season this in thee! Barbara Ann (Binkele) Bukowiec: born August 3, 1940, in Peoria, IL. Passed peacefully on November 6, 2023, in Warroad, MN. Preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Janette (Goldsmith) Binkele; her husband, Stanley Bukowiec; her grandsons, Sean Riggins and Jeffery Ruland; and her brother-in-law, Rodger Haga. Survived by her children, Trudy (Scott) Ruland of New Town, ND, Debbie Riggins of Watford City, ND, and Tom (Joy) Bukowiec of Warroad, MN; grandsons William (Jess) Ruland and Barrett, David, and Aidan Bukowiec; great granddaughter Maci Ruland; a sister, Earlene Haga, and brother, David Binkele, and nieces and nephew Diane, Amy, and Duane. An extended family of great nephews, a great-great niece, great-great nephews, and many cousins also survive. Memorials are preferred to either Lake of Woods Public School in Baudette, MN, or Turtle Mountain Community High School in Belcourt, ND. Our public schools face monumental challenges trying to educate the young people in our country. In addition to educating the future generation, educators find themselves dealing with behavioral/mental health issues among students and making sure they have enough to eat, all while juggling budget cuts that cause staffing shortages and increases in class size. Teachers spend countless hours of their own time correcting papers and planning lessons and projects. They spend much of their own money buying supplies for their classrooms. Your donations in Barb’s name can help ease some of these challenges. Barb also loved all wildlife, mostly birds, and in particular, loons. Memorials can also be made to The National Loon Foundation.

Obituary Preview: Dorothy Mae Heppner passed from this earth to her Heavenly home on October 30, 2023.
Dorothy was born on April 13, 1925 to Abraham and Katharina Harder in Lostwood, North Dakota. Dorothy was born with a heart condition and it was considered to be unlikely that she would survive. God had wonderful plans for Dorothy, and with the attentiveness and constant care of her family, she grew into a strong and resilient young woman.
She loved to share stories about these early years in North Dakota. Although times were tough, she would light up whenever she talked about the farm and her family. In the 1937, the Harder family moved to Warroad, Minnesota. After completing the 8th grade, she worked as a housekeeper for local families. She then married the love of her life, Alfred Heppner, on May 26, 1946. Together, they lived a Christ-centered life, filled with faith, family, and farming. They were blessed with three children– Ronald, Lois, and Charles. Dorothy devoted her entire life to serving Christ, her family, and her community. She is known for
her unwavering faith in Jesus and was a beacon of hope and truth to all those that knew her. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years at the Woodland Mennonite Church. In later years, she attended the Family Fundamental Church, and was famous for her Bible Memory. Dorothy could recite many Bible verses and enjoyed inspiring others to memorize God’s Word.
Dorothy was also a prolific writer. She wrote the “Moranville News” for the Warroad Pioneer for over 50 years. Her articles quickly became a staple of the community, and many would share that they continued to subscribe to the paper after they had moved away simply so they could read her articles. Additionally, she penned several self-published books about her life and family.
Dorothy had many friends, but none were more important than her sisters. For the past several years, they were inseparable and could often be seen around town having the time of their lives. Ann and Martha were very special to Dorothy, and while she craved more adventures with them, the promise of everlasting life with her Savior was too good to pass up.
She is dearly missed by her family and friends. Surviving Dorothy are two sisters, Ann Heppner and Martha Fast; her children, Ron (Sue) Heppner, Lois (David) Gagne, and Charles (Desi) Heppner; her twelve grandchildren; and, thirty-two great grand children. Preceding her in death is her husband, Alfred; and her parents; siblings Kate, Pete, Nettie, Marie, Fred, Margaret, Abe, George, Cornelius; and 2 great grandchildren Amos Clark and Heidi Heppner.

Clair L. Knudson 87, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2023 at his daughter’s home, with his family by his side, in Lake Park, MN after a 3 month battle with cancer. He was born with a midwife in attendance to Orrell and Anna (Landin) Knudson on April 21, 1936 in Swift, MN. His father died in a hunting accident in 1945. His mother then married Randolph Knudson in 1953 and they became a family of 11. Clair attended school in Swift for grades 1-6, Roosevelt for 7th and 8th grades and went on to high school in Warroad, graduating in 1954. Clair and LaVonne Lundemo were married on Christmas Day 1955 at Spruce Lutheran in Roseau, MN.
Clair was a shoe sales manager in Minneapolis for 6 yrs until he and LaVonne moved to Warroad in 1962 where they live today. They started their farming operation “Hard Rock Dairy” that continued until his retirement in 2008. Clair was a member of Zion Lutheran church and was a board member on many agriculture associations over the years. In 1978 Clair and LaVonne were selected “Honored Dairyman Couple” for Roseau County. In 2018 they were selected Farm Family of the Year for Roseau County. Clair loved the farm and everything it had to offer. A fond memory from the farm was that every year the kindergarten class came to visit our farm and one student asked, “Which cows give chocolate milk?”.
After his retirement Clair turned into an avid baker and gardener. He spent endless hours in the garden during the summer, and in the fall he spent many hours canning all the produce to enjoy all winter long. Clair loved spending time with family, friends, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. There was always lots of food, and the coffee pot and goodies were always abundant.
Clair and LaVonne loved to attend the grandkids’ sporting events and activities over the years. There was never a dull moment. Clair loved to travel after his retirement. Making RV trips with the kids, cruising on ships, and many special trips to Norway to visit relatives and Hawaii were just a few. Deer hunting was also something Clair enjoyed. In November of 2018 he finally shot the buck of his dreams… he was pretty proud of that one.

Bounlouane Ounchith - January 01, 1947 - October 08, 2023

Departed: 10/08/2023 (Warroad)
Obituary Preview: A Traditional Lao Service for Bounlouane Ounchith of Warroad will take place on Friday, October 13, 2023 at Noon at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau.
Bounlouane Ounchith, born on January 1st 1947 as the youngest of his family in Ban Kong, Laos. He grew up in a family with a military tradition that led him to become an Army officer. After the Civil War in Laos concluded he made the perilous journey to a refugee camp in Thailand, leaving everything he once had held dear behind.
Little did Bounlouane know that his life in a Thai Refugee camp would lead to meeting Bounlong who would become his wife. Of course this courtship had its setbacks like pretending to read a letter written in Chinese Mandarin. Not smart if someone you are trying to impress actually speaks the language.
Eventually in that time Bounlouane and Bounlong Ounchith were able to find sponsors from a Church in Houston Texas. From the war weary status of “Refugees” to the dream of immigrating to The United States of America. Based on networking with other former Lao Refugees, They decided to move from Texas to Louisiana. A state very similar to the tropical climate of Laos and job opportunities.
Bounlouane had a hand in many trades from steel wielder, shrimp fishermen, and oil rig worker, but his most challenging was becoming a father of not 1 but 2 boys in 1981 and 1983. David and Vichita would swarm him with love and childhood silliness.
With a growing family and economic recession of the early 80s a decision was made to move to Stockton, California. Where an old childhood friend said California has opportunities for work and a strong social safety net that can help raise a family.
In this Era, the World Wrestling Federation captured the imagination with the pay per view buy of Wrestlemania 3. In a jam packed one bedroom apartment neighbors, fiends kids cheered on their favorite Wrestlers like, Ricky the Dragon Steamboat, Andre the Giant, Jimmy fly Snuka, "Bad Bad" Leroy Brown, and of course Hulk Hogan. He would find joy seeing the kids get excited for The Road Warriors, Demolition Crew, and raise their hands up to the ring entrance of The Ultimate Warrior.
As time in Stockton California progressed, social organizations were a huge part of life as a family. Traveling from Stockton to Sacramento, San Francisco, Lodi, Fresno and San Diego for various Buddhist religious ceremonies, Lao traditions and festivals put on by the community. Of course the biggest event by far was the birth of Niya Ounchith in 1986.
As the 80s came to a close, the 90s provided stark challenges with inner city life becoming unsafe raising children and another big decision was made. The move from Stockton, a city of 225,091 to Warroad, a city of 1,800 in 1993. This led to almost 10 years of hard work and dedication at Marvin Windows and Doors until a hemorrhagic stroke in August of 2005.
His family rallied successfully behind him enough to recover his ability to speak, walk with assistance and even do a little dance. To commemorate this milestone as a family, it was decided to return to his roots visiting Ban Kong, Laos and Savannakhet Laos in 2007 where his wife’s father and mother-in-law greeted him with appreciation and love.
Since then Bounlouane Ounchith has been loved and cared for through multiple acute health crises, finally ending where it started over 18 years ago on October 8th 2023 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks North Dakota with immediate family present including his grandchildren AviAnna and TreAllan Ounchith. He may have not been able to verbalize his love for his grandkids but there was always a little more energy for him when they were next to his bedside. They loved their papa and he loved them.
Survived by:  his wife Bounlong Ounchith of Warroad, MN, his children David Ounchith of Warroad, MN, Vichita (Ashley) Ounchith of Warroad, MN, and Niya Ounchith Burbank, Ca, his grandchildren TreAllan and AviAnna Ounchith Warroad, MN.  Also, survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, sister, father-in-law, and brother-in-laws.
Thank you to everyone that has been a part of my dad’s life he truly loved everyone he met along the way. Thank you all that came over to help organize during this hectic time. We truly appreciate it.
