Francis (Frank) Elmo Pinkney was born February 22, 1931 to the late Mildred Brown in Washington, DC. Frank grew up in the Washington, DC area and was raised by his grandmother May. Frank made his way through the public school system and was granted an opportunity to go art school with a full scholarship but was immediately drafted to serve in the Korean War with the United States Army. After his tour with the military ended, he held several jobs to include working as a lineman at Pepco until he landed at GSA and retired after 20 plus years of service.

Yomma T Cohen - December 22, 1943 - September 17, 2021

Departed: 09/17/2021 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Yomma T. Cohen was born on December 22, 1943, in Williamsburg, Virginia to the late Deacon Ananias and Lura B. Johnson. Yomma attended Bruton Heights High School where she earned the nickname “Zippy” for her superior typing skills.  After graduating in 1962, she went on to attend Peninsula Business College in Newport News, Virginia, where she earned her Associates Degree in 1964. Upon college graduation, Yomma ventured North to start a new life and career in Washington, DC. She worked at Northwest Settlement House as an Office Manager for several years before joining World Bank in 1976. During her tenure, Yomma worked her way up the ladder as an administrative assistant working in various departments with multiple executives and received several certificates and merit awards along the way. During this time, she met and married her husband and life partner, Herman Cohen. Through this union, she was blessed with nine children whom she embraced with open arms and a welcoming heart. She went on to birth her only child, Brett Cohen, completing their family. They remained happily married for twenty-five years until Herman transitioned in 2002.
Yomma was a woman of faith who accepted Christ at an early age at Chickahominy Baptist Church in Toano, Virginia and devoted her life to serving Christ, her community, and her family.  As a young adult  everyone could see how natural it was for her to care for others. Her reputation preceded her as a compassionate young woman devoted to service, and this reputation remained with her throughout her life. Her mom would often jokingly call her Mother Theresa or Joan of Arc, because of her unrelenting spirit to advocate for the helpless and lend a hand to those in need. She was a kind woman who dedicated her life to uplifting those around her.
Yomma loved to serve, but she also loved to party! She enjoyed dancing, eating and singing. She was a dedicated member of Andrew Rowe and the DC Choral Ensemble for over 20 years, travelling throughout the East Coast spreading the gospel through song. She also loved going to the movies. She was known to have full conversations with the characters, often yelling at the screen to either warn, chastise, or cheer them on throughout the show.  In her older years, she grew fond of Westerns and would sit back and enjoy the view of Clint Eastwood flashing across her screen. These are the simple pleasures that brought her the greatest joy in her latter years.
After retiring in 2000, Yomma became a caregiver to many, including her father and mother. This served as an example for her children and niece, who would later care for her with the same attention and loving touch they saw her show so many others. Yomma was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter and friend who loved to be around family, so it was only fitting for her to depart this realm in the same manner: peacefully in her home, surrounded by family and love. Yomma went on to be with the Lord on September 17, 2021.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son Brett Cohen (Khaleelah Cohen) and grandchildren Kai Bullock-Cohen, Micah Palmer and Zuri Cohen; eight children in love: Avin Collins, Herman Cohen, Jr., Thomas Cohen, Michelle Thomas (Derozette), Eric Cohen, Jacqueline Sanders,  Towanda Mitchell, Juan Vizcarrondo-Fargas (Lanita), and Luis Vizcarrondo-Fargas; her younger siblings Tyrone Johnson (Selda),  Vonzola Johnson, Debra Johnson, Sharon Johnson, Berrender Johnson, Rhonda Fox (Maurice), Ryelynn “Tree” Johnson, and sister-in-law Reverend Ann Johnson; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, caring friends and a host of people she’s touched throughout her life.

Cynthia D Whitmire - April 27, 1954 - August 17, 2021

Departed: 08/17/2021 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Cynthia Diane Whitmire (née Pullins), affectionately known as Cyn, went home to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning, August 17, 2021, at the age of 67.
Cyn was born on April 27, 1954, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Cherry Stevens (née Bryant) and Laverne Pullins, Sr. Growing up, she attended the public schools of Jacksonville and was known as a happy‑go‑lucky little girl who loved to tell jokes. Always fashion forward, she would step pretty in the marching band (flute) or as part of the dance auxiliary at Williams M. Raines High School, where Cyn graduated in the class of 1972. In her yearbook she stated that her ambition was to be a secretary. But little did she know, God’s plan was for her to be so much more, and He would use her to bless so many people.
In 1976, Cyn married Jerome King in Georgia. They began their family in 1980, welcoming their only child together, daughter Ikeda Jahrie. Though their marriage did not last as they had hoped, as a team they raised their daughter with love. Not giving up on love, she married Johnny Whitmire, a seaman in the Navy in 1991. With welcoming arms and heart, she welcomed two bonus daughters, Avery Whitmire and Toni Rene Whitmire, into the family.
Cyn understood that gaining knowledge would take her far, so she studied hard and obtained her Associate of Arts degree in Computer Data Processing from Charles County Community College; her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Science from the University of Maryland; and her Masters of Science degree in Management from the Florida Institute of Technology.
Cyn was a servant leader with over 40 years of experience in the public and private sector. She worked in information technology (IT) at notable companies such as Booz-Allen Hamilton, Oracle Corp, and the company from which she retired, Northrop Grumman. During her distinguished career, she also served at several organizations including the U.S. Department of State, the Duval County School Board, Florida Junior College, Jacksonville Urban League, and the Florida Parole and Probation Board, just to name a few. Cyn has always had a passion for helping others. That’s who she was. As a little girl she defended those who were bullied, and as an adult she was an advocate for those in need…she even defended her country. Prior to her career in IT, Cyn joined both the Army Reserve (1975-1979) and the Navy Reserve (1982-1984). Cyn started Jahrie & Associates, a tax consulting firm, that grew every year, due to her vast knowledge and honest practices. In order to give back to the community, she eventually started her own non-profit, Roots of Mankind Corp (ROM). With ROM, Cyn advocated for 1st time homebuyers by providing credit counseling/repair and homebuyers education. She also assisted homeowners by providing foreclosure counseling and prevention. Cyn was the ultimate advocate. She championed prison reform, helping recently released inmates re-enter their communities, and she worked to protect the rights of our elders by volunteering with the Prince George’s County Ombudsman program. She was not only a Gold Star recipient, but she volunteered with them as well, working to comfort and assist spouses of fallen veterans. There isn’t enough room to list all of the wonderful things she did.
Cyn loved the Lord and she studied His Word tirelessly, witnessing and sharing her knowledge of Him to whomever would listen. Along with her aunt, she started a family tele-bible study that spans from Ohio to Florida. She was also an avid member of the group, “Moms in Prayer,” at her church, Fellowship Baptist Church.
Her home was filled with love and was always open to family and friends. She generously gave of her time, experience, and resources and never hesitated to help those in need. She lived a life of service, lifting up others, and though early on she may not have known what God intended for her, she lived her purpose and His perfect plan.
Cyn is survived by her parents, Cherry Stevens, step-father Robert Stevens, father Laverne Pullins, Sr.; father-in-law John Whitmire; children, Ikeda Betts (Isaac), Toni Rene Simon (Travis), and Avery Whitmire; grandchildren Layla Woolridge, Isaiah King, Isaac Betts IV, Hope Betts, Brhee Simon, Braelin Simon, Sylver Simon and Brynn Simon; siblings, Laverne Pullins, Jr. (Harriet), Ronell Pullins (Shantel), Ambrose Stevens (Jackie), Eric Stevens (Sharon), and Renita Buckham; brothers-in-law David Whitmire (Regine), Tony Whitmire (Angela), Orlando Whitmire, Reginald Whitmire (Ecolia), sisters-in-law Claudia McClarrin, Claudette Coleman; uncles and aunts Arcadio Febles, Eugene Febles (Brenda), Virginia Moore (Cecil), Elaine Febles, Corrine Alderman (Roscoe), Joanne Palmer, Gwendolyn McClendon, Alfred Bryant Sr., Minister Lawrence Bryant (Ora), Karl Bryant (Marilyn), Barbara Ann Young (James), Bennet Bryant (Kenitra), Marshall Bryant, Gala James, Denise Brown (Willie), Kenneth Bryant (Jacqueline), Paquina Cameron (Darren), Rosiland Pugh (Carlton); great aunt Bessie Thomas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Johnny Whitmire, partner William Johnson, and sibling Richard Oliver; uncles Melvin Bryant, Christopher Bryant; and aunt May Frances Lincoln.

Awa Nnochin Ebi - August 13, 1989 - December 28, 2020

Departed: 12/28/2020 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Awa was a beautiful soul who was admired and adored by his family and friends.
Awa’s life was extraordinary. He lived in a world where very few understood him. Then again, very seldom do we acknowledge the greatness in people until death unveils the impact of their lives. Both Awa’s life and death have had a reverberating impact. His untimely death can never negate all the good memories cycling through each of our minds and hearts. Although we continue this journey without him, his legacy can never be diminished nor forgotten.
The very thought of human impermanence forces us to face the truth of existence: We will all die one day. This inescapable truth should remind us daily of the importance of finding value in the work that we do and our personal responsibility, when feasible, to help enrich the lives of others.
Awa is survived by parents, Uma and Patience Ebi, and siblings, Okechukwu, Chukwuma, Nnate, and Ezinne Ebi. We are proud to have called him Son, Brother, and Friend. We honor his life by choosing to live fearlessly and by doing all the things he always wished he had the courage to do. A LETTER TO AWA FROM HIS FAMILY
We are writing to let you know how much we miss you with all of our hearts. We do not know why you had to go untimely, but God knows why. In the mist of grief, we reconcile our sorrow by knowing that all things work together for the good to those who love God. In spite of this understanding, we wish so much to feel your presence again. We know someday we will see you again in Jesus name.
You will never be forgotten.  Even after death, our love for you will never cease.
We know that you are with the LORD in heaven now.
We love you dearly, deeply, and sincerely.
